Our pal Butch not only shares his collection of Berettas, but takes them to the range!

I have accidentally acquired a collection of Beretta Mouse Guns, ironically named after cats. They all share the same open top slide and beautiful Italian design. Yeah, they're purdy, but how do they shoot? Well they shoot okay, but I suck. Forgive me, Gub Threaders but I have not been to the range in mumble-mumble months. I also confess that the last several mags were rushed. I recently retired, so I have more free time to work on fundamentals.

Beretta 71 (Cougar)
Chambered in .22LR, alloy frame, steel slide, 8-round magazine. Used by Israeli Air Marshals, the Mossad, and Sayeret Matkal. To meet the weight/length restrictions of the 1968 GCA, a fake suppressor was "permanently" pinned to the barrel. Once in CONUS, they can be removed. Mine is an import from Israel.

Beretta 84F (Cheetah)
Chambered in .380 ACP, 13-round double-stacked magazine. It has a "combat" trigger guard with a squared-off front that allows for a finger hold and a frame-mounted safety/de-cocker.

Beretta 85F (Cheetah)
It is essentially the same as the 84F, but has an 8-round single stack magazine.

Browning BDA
Manufactured by Beretta for FN Herstal. It is derived from the Beretta 84 (same 13-round magazines), but does not have an open slide. The safety is slide mounted (up = pew, down = no pew).

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the The Gurkha Ghost

So, for my celebratory cigar, I went bigly. The Gurkha Ghost complete with holographic band which I thought was kinda cool. And I’m glad I did!
It starts with a peppery taste and blends into the surprisingly mild (for a medium bodied cigar) smoke with a layer of flavors that seem to center on cocoa and cinnamon. Made in the Dominican Republic, it looks imposing. Big, dark, earthy and even if it has been in the humidor for a bit, the skin looks lightly oiled from the tobacco. This is something a friend told me to look for. It is a good tip. Such a look is promising and this didn't disappoint.
The smoke has a pleasant tobacco flavor and this stick had an average draw. The ash stayed even and as I got into it, backgrounds of leather and wood floated near my nose. Very pleasant. This cigar would pair well with just about any scotch, a better bourbon, and I'd go Irish with it as well.
And yes, I'd sneak a martini into this as well.
Price ranges from $7.00-$9.00 so affordable.
I am a fan, and will be stocking up on the Ghost soon.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

35 That last Beretta technically isn't. It's a Browning BDA built by Beretta for Browning. The slide is the giveaway. Zoom in and you can see the slide markings.

Actually, it's technically a Browning .380 BDA. Browning also had a 9mm BDA which was built by Sig Sauer and is just a re-branded Sig P220 (I believe).

44 Number 3 son needed to sight in his 308 so we went to the range.
He noted, on the 100yrd targets that he brought 2 different grains of 308. He switched to his Berretta 9mm and did well at 25yds.

I took the Ruger Max 9 and at 11yds it proved that it's a good thing I've scheduled my R eye cataract surgery. The center rings actually laughed at me.

46 Hello, Weasel! Looks like Gertie is definitely settling in.

Butch, I recently picked up a Beretta Model 81, which is very similar to the Cheetah, except it's chambered in .32 ACP. Each magazine holds 12 rounds of .32 ACP. This is police surplus pistol, almost certainly from Italy. It's a very mild shooter; a step up from .22 LR, but not quite as punchy as 9mm. Next year, I plan on getting it to the new shooters' table in TX.

53 Top 30?! Yay!

Took a week off for my 5th Dan test and had two mornings at the range. One got a good friend of mine back on target out to 100 yards - he’s been missing shots the last couple of years. He also admitted that his cataracts (he’s 79) probably need to be removed….
He was having trouble seeing the red center of a Shoot’n’see past 50 yards even with a decent scope at 9x.
The other morning got a556 upper on target. About 1 MOA. with plinker ammo.

54 I have both a Beretta 85 (that I put lovely wood grips on) and a Browning BDA, along with their pappy, the M1934 in .380 (made in 1944, presumably for the German forces in Italy after the Italian surrender.) They're all sweethearts.

55 Range Report:
Wednesday morning, I retrieved the AR 10 from the middle of the pond, where it had been in hiding.
I replaced the bolt stop and forward assist that PSA warranty team got to me quickly.
I shot 168s and 175s of my own making, and some 150 hunting ammo I had gotten from trick or treating at the club.
Rifle performed flawlessly.
I was less than stellar. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

I tried Weasel’s FUNdamentals analysis:
I had used splatter targets with a huge red dot in the center, where normally I’m aiming at tiny dots.

Yes, aim small, miss small is a FUNdamental.

Possibly. One of the issues that is going to be key is that legislation that involves budgetary issues can be included in reconciliation. Those are not are subject to the filibuster in the Senate.

Basically there are all sorts of bizarre twists to the reconciliation process that make it difficult for outsiders to tell whether or not the Senate Parliamentarian will make a ruling that it can be or cannot be included in the legislative package.

My guess is that national carry reciprocity will have to go through normal legislative means which means possible filibuster in the Senate. Same for suppressors or SBRs being dropped from the NFA or the Hughes Amendment rescinded.

According to former Senator Jim Talent on the most recent Duane's World podcast (https://duane.world), the House and Senate must first pass a budget, then reconciliation can come into play. I agree with whig that the most likely path for national concealed carry reciprocity is regular order.

Thanks for asking! She's doing pretty good, 4th p/t in the morning. I stepped up her exercise routine a bit by feeding her TacoBell for lunch.

First, see if the firearm points naturally for you. Fit of a handgun, especially a defensive weapon should simply take raising it to your eyes to fit the sights in your master grip.

The fit of a handgun is intensely individualistic but when a handgun matches the person's hand and the grip angle is the right on for that person, the sights line up almost like magic.

Most people can shoot a handgun that does not fit their hands well but they will never be as good at it as they will with one that fits their hands.

Second thing, try dryfiring with a laser underneath zeroed for the distance you thing is proper (with that firearm, 10-15 yards is about right).

Despite extensive training and mentoring from bluebell, Weasel managed to cut himself, rather than his target. Said cut was reported to be in the "Slap with hot iron" class.

Anyone who reads The Gun Thread with any regularity is now thinking "Obviously, Weasel needs to practice his shiv fundamentals, and with focus.", and this would be true.

I'm thinking bluebell needs to take the katana into protective custody. A cut finger is one thing. Weasel losing one (or more) of his six major appendages due to inadequate skillz would be a Bad Thing.

104 I dug out my old S&W Model 19 .357 6" barrel revolver for my most recent range trip. Haven't fired it in decades. I thought I'd have a hard time with it, after being spoiled by 1911-type triggers. But it fit my hand like an old friend, and if you ignore the long take-up, the DA trigger is actually pretty damn good. It was fun to get re-acquainted with an old friend.

Now I just have to get some .357 ammo. .38 is kid stuff.

The initial production models of the 80 series Beretta handguns had thumb safeties that operate similar to that of the 1911 (up for safe, down to fire). My Beretta Model 81 is one of the early production guns, probably from the late 1970s. After the US military adopted the Model 92 as the M9, the 80 series pistols began to incorporate the same decocking mechanism that the Model 92 had. Butch's Model 71 and 84F have the early thumb safety. The BDA has the later decocker seen on the Model 92/M9. Although the early guns are capable of double action firing, setting up the gun to do so requires you to lower the hammer on a loaded chamber while manipulating the safety at just the right moment to block the fall of the hammer. Not a safe play in my book. The decocker is much safer for the user.

It's a Kimber Micro 9 Raptor model from the Custom Shop. I only have about 50 rounds through it and it has functioned flawlessly. Very well balanced with a superb trigger. I really don't have a single bad thing to say about it. I bought it from Bud's for about $650 I think.

116 Range Report: We had targets set up @ 620 yards, 800 yards, 1025 yards and 1,000 meters. Each distance was 5 shots in 2 min 30 sec with 1 mulligan at a moment of your choice.

Yours truly hit absolutely nothing at 620 yards. The KYL rack laughed at me. Then, for whatever reason, I decided going 2 for 5 @ 800 yards on a 10" plate was great idea. From there, I went on to go 3 for 5 @ 1025 yards on a 12" plate.

On to the turkey silhouettes @1,000 meters. First shot, knocked one down! I thinking, "cool, I'm on it...." and proceeded to miss the next 5 shots. Drat. Still though, I wasn't last, and actually beat more experienced shooters.

One of our better shooters had a bad day with the rifle. At the end of the day he said to our female shooter, friend of his, "at least I didn't lose to a girl." To which I replied, "Yeah, but you lost to a guy shooting an 06."

The guy who won the whole thing ran the KYL rack, then knocked over every single turkey @ 1,000 meters. First time it's ever been done. The guy was lights out shooting, It was something else to see. We did, however, tell him he should hang his head in shame for the 2 shots he missed. Good grief, the guy was good. Fun day.

I found myself stationed at Marine Barracks Philadelphia, just down Broad Street from the site of Tun Tavern, the birthplace of the Corps. The celebration(s) that November were ones for the record books. One of my duties as SLJO* was property custodian for the exhibits on the USS Intrepid, which was fitting out as a museum in the Navy Yard. This was before she was moved to NYC.

Be kind to it. Old style Model 19s were prone to cracking with a heavy dose of the newfangled (at the time) 125gr rockets. They tend to flamecut the upper strap and sometimes cause cracking of the barrel at the breech flat.

Robert Campbell, who I respect, former cop, gunwriter, and firearm's trainer recommends 145 Gr. Winchester Silvertips for lethality for carry and easier on the Model 19 top frame and barrel flat which are where the trouble happens for those.

158gr while being a bit hard on recoil can be digested by Model 19s and their brethren just fine.

FWIW, Ruger Security/Speed Sixes will actually fit most S&W K frame holsters and you can fire all the 357 magnum ammo you want in those.

132 On cleaning... I discovered I did not have a jag for my .22 revolver. And the doohickey with the needle eye in it is not small enough to easily go down a .22 barrel with a patch in it. I did learn that the cleaning rod itself makes a nice push, though, if you roll up the cleaning patch and insert it into the barrel. Kind of like pushing wadding down a muzzleloader.

But after trips to 2 WalMarts (one of which had ammo, but NO other gun stuff) I got what I needed. Mostly by buying an entire kit. Anyone need a cleaning rod? It's only my third....

I have never held a handgun that just felt natural to my hand and aimpoint.

I just wrap my hand around the gun in the best fashion (to me) for a mouse gun up to a .45, and then shoot "meh".

Any advice for picking a gun up and trying to check my "natural" grip and point of aim, BEFORE I start manipulating my grip to make it work?

Plenty of people at the MoMes have offered to let me try their guns, so I need to make the most of my opportunities to experiment!

I was signed for an ONTOS, a DUKW, a Stuart Tank, a Panther Jet, an S2F, and a whole lot of other neat stuff. I actually got to drive the ONTOS across the flight deck. It was very cool.
OK, gun-related: when the Barracks was disestablished not long afterwards, we had to dispose of some 200 M14 rifles used for ceremonies. No one in DoD, or any other federal agency, would take them. They were a glut on the market. Finally, we were ordered to destroy them, and we used a torch to cut their receivers. They were almost brand-new rifles. I wept. And that's no shit.

FYI, some models have interchangeable backstraps, and a few offer interchangeable grip panels in addition. H&K VP9s and P-30s are examples. They can make a significant and positive addition to the hand/weapon interface.

I triple tapped the swinging target and was on.

Easiest to shoot pistol I've handled.

If you can, try a Browning High Power (or one of its clones first). A K-Frame Smith also does but dunno if you want a revolver.

For a detailed explanation far better than I can do, The Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery 6th or 7th ed by Massad Ayoob has a whole section on gun fit in the chapter of what gun to get. Not much difference frankly between 6th and 7th so you can pick up a used copy cheaper of the 6th, the 7th has newer models of firearms included and holsters. The technique part is basically the same.

Has a LOT of useful information from a master trainer from holsters, firearms, sights, tactics, etc. that you can then go deeper for any of these chapters elsewhere.

I asked, and it was a Staccato XC. The thing has a comp with a really large hole, that's part of the barrel. You're not the first to find it really really easy to shoot well. Great gun.

173 124 Be kind to it. Old style Model 19s were prone to cracking with a heavy dose of the newfangled (at the time) 125gr rockets. They tend to flamecut the upper strap and sometimes cause cracking of the barrel at the breech flat.

177 Lin-duh, FYI, the serial number on the 1903 Springfield gifted to Spawn (488XXX) indicates that the rifle was produced at Springfield Armory sometime in mid-1911. I didn't get a good look at the wooden stock, but I don't think they're original. The stocks were routinely changed out when rifles went through overhaul or repairs. Considering that this rifle is over 100 years old, it's unlikely that the original stock and handguards would have survived the hard service WWI and WWII would have dished out. This doesn't change the fact that Spawn has a fully functional 100+ year old piece of history that's been around the block.

Bill Jordan, legendary lawman and a competitive shooter helped Smith design the gun. It was designed to fire 158 gr bullets in the 1950's and as Jordan said, about 10 practice 38 Special cartridges for every one 357 Magnum cartridge fired.

Smith and Wesson improved a lot since the 50's when they were introduced such as better steel but both the barrel flat and the top strap could not be thickened without substantially changing the design (which Smith has now done btw on new ones for some time now).

Haven't shot the one I bought but plan to fix that soon. Next week, hopefully. Gun ranges in the Babylon DC area are spread out and not easy to get too, for me anyway. The funniest thing I ever read, it was in a book, "Chickenhawk," where a Huey was lost so commander decided the chopper was lost with all of the equipment which could not be accounted for. I think the final tally was the Huey was overloaded by a couple of tons.

A gun that 'points' means when you raise it that the sights are aligned with the target almost naturally with your arms and head without doing awkward movement of your arms or head for it to do so.

Depending on which gun you are firing, double actions like revolvers and certain semi automatics are fired from teh power crease (the first joint of the trigger finger---NEVER the tip) and thus the reach from the backstrap to the trigger must allow the trigger finger to do so without sticking it either too much in the trigger guard or too little where you have to use the tip or pad of your finger to pull the trigger (most people simply do not have the finger strength to use the pad to fire 10 lb trigger on a double action and be accurate).

A single action, one can and generally does use the finger pad in many cases which means a different backstrap to trigger distance than above.

A caveat to that, if it is a cartridge type that fits in the chamber, always wise to rotate the laser cartridge to ensure that it was manufactured properly. Some will zero differently.

Arbor types sometimes have the same issue if the arbor used is not tight or if it is warped.

If you are trying to get on paper at 100 yards with a boresight, I recommend a green laser type.

If you can rent or borrow the gun(s) you want to try, you can do this at the range or at home. With the gun UNLOADED on the bench in front of you, line up to the target. Close your eyes, pick up the gun, and point it to where you think the target is. Open your eyes and check if the sights are close or even level. Repeat it a few times. When you find the one that points for you, you'll know it.

223 Yesterday we went to another local (relatively) range that had 100 yard lanes.

It was an outdoor range, and the weather was perfect. The shop and the range are significantly less bougie than the regular DMV MGC home. HOWEVER - the crowd there was just as diverse. sra blaster was the only woman shooting on the rifle side and people were giving her props. Our son (23 yo) was there and enjoyed it - the next lane over some other young guys were there, one of them had a Garand. Let our son shoot it because he said it was, I quote, "sick."

He was pretty happy with that.

We had a real good day shooting.

I have a very, very nice controllable wooden humidor with an excellent seal. I've been meticulous about keeping the humidity inside at a constant 65 on the Hygrometer. Inside this humidor are approximately 20 La Herencia Cubanas CORE cigars. They are torpedo maduros.

(ahem) I bought them back in 2013 (which makes them nearly 11 years old). The age gave me pause. But, last Tuesday night (early Wed. morning) I broke one out. Initially, I thought due to the age it would go up like a dried out Christmas tree in February. Instead, I had a flavorful, cedar laden treat (humidor is pure cedar wood). It was smooth (and I mean smooth), burned very nicely (slow and even) and seemed to fit the occasion perfectly.

("Shooting your watch" is the term for holding your hands out as if your non-watch hand is your airplane, and the watch hand is the offending aircraft - either the enemy or your wingman (less common). It's the fighter pilot equivalent of jazz hands.)

Don't overthink this. A saying I often use in training is "Good judgement is the result of experience. And experience is the result of poor judgement." You're worried about poor judgement. Don't be.

Get some experience first. Is there a range near you that rents handguns? Try some out. Go back a couple of times. Remember the 80/20 rule. You're going to shoot most about the same.

I shoot most Glocks low and left. I don't like the grip angle or the trigger. Improving the trigger moves them into 'acceptable' for me. IME, 80% of people shoot stock Glocks reasonably well. I'm one of the 20%.

I bought my first H&K because I loved how it felt in my hand. A year later, I played with the interchangeable panels, and a combo of large grip panels and a small backstrap felt *that much better*.

It's somewhat improbable that the first one you get will be *perfect*. Try some. Pick one. A Glock, a Sig P365 would be good ones to try first.

And, because this has a decent if not a famous name scope (Nikko Stirling Diamond Long Range 4-16x50 we were able to set the knobs to zero after zeroing it. The buffer only AR pistol was legally safe way to avoid the whole arm brace as a stock kerfluffle.

You can shoot them accurately with sling tension 3-4 MOA or so at 50 yards serving to steady them and usually something not quite a handstop (no forward grip as that is SBR territory) that alerts you to the fact that the handguard is ending and the hot barrel is about to begin.

I have seen people put tennis balls on the bare buffer tube, and yes, all in response to ATFs tomfoolery.

But these guys put a bipod on it - and were shooting it at the 100 yard targets expecting to hit something.

It was definitely not the right tool for that job.

The only 1-3 generation Glock I shot well was the G-30. Only Glock I have now. Service size (4 inch barrels typically) Springfield XD's of that generation fit me better than equivalent Glock service arm size firearms in either 9mm or 45.

Bought a Long Slide aka Tactical 40 S&W Springfield XD about two years ago in an auction to play with and I have never been able to test it out yet due to recurring neuropathy and back issues.

I shoot the G30 well, the G42 and 43 slightly less well, and the G20 reasonably well (go figure). Box stock 17s and 19s I shoot poorly. I have a G19 that Zev breathed on pretty hard that I shoot well, it's also fragile.

I shoot the Shadow Systems Glock clones very well, even better w/the 1911 backstrap in place of the Glock one.

The Gen 5s have a replaceable backstrap; I haven't tried one to see if it improves grip.

For striker-fired, I like the H&K trigger, followed by the Sig P365. Walther's triggers might edge out H&K, but I haven't felt the need to get one yet.

Obviously, Weasel is a competitive class long rifle shot. The man simply is. For a short time, I talked to him when I was considering making that step. Listen to him when you are interested in accuracy.

But I would say, for the rest of "us" - those pretty patterns within the nine ring at seven yards don't mean shit. Can any of us pull, and shoot, an entire mag from a plethora of positions while some are shaking like a dog shitting a peach seed ... somewhere between the shoulders and the belt and neck on another man ?

I say that is, largely, a matter of will. I simply don't believe all the time to get in that nine ring at seven yards is the deciding factor. Its will. You don't get that on the range. Where to get it is one Hell of a question that folks like Jeff Cooper explored.

I actually stay away from the cutting edge and right now due to arthritic damage, I have been firing 9mm full service size and heavy handguns the few times I fired between 2020 and 2022.

Still dry fire when I can and draw. Naturally pointing firearms help and more and more I am liking the S&W Third Generation models in DAO. The trigger takes me back to Smith double action revolvers which I adore and a 9mm fired in a 4 inch 38 oz steel frame has very little felt recoil.

The H&K VP9s and P30s are smaller than a USP, and with the appropriate grips/backstrap panels might work for you, particularly the 'long' models (VP9L and P30L (John Wick's "gun").

You might look at the Sig P-365 Fuse, which has taken the family into full-size range, but the grip circumference remains nice for smaller hands. The S&Ws are nice as well, of course.

The H&K Mark 23 is even bigger than the USP. I got mine because 1) it was a first year of production gun (1996), 2) came w/ the original woodland camo case, and 3) four magazines (3 ten round, one 12 round) for $2k. The HK Compact Tactical is much less bulky (as the name might suggest) and comes w/ a threaded barrel if you want to add a suppressor.

First semi auto carry weapon was a W. German surplused P6/P225 here. Single stack fit me, the double stack P series did not.

One of the problems that I have is that it feels all the time like I am wearing gloves from nerve damage due to the inflammatory arthritis and so have pretty much moved back to a revolver like trigger stroke simply for muscle memory and make sure that I fire each shot.

Light triggers are now out for me and Glocks, with their two NY trigger kits are fine but Glocks do not fit my hand well.

I didn't like the idea of a Lab Radar (they were all the rage at SHOT Show 2020) as you need to buy/have the mic pickup for suppressors. As that's mostly what I do it was a bit off putting. I like the small size and looks like a useful mount/tripod. As long as its works for rifle and hopefully for our new shotgun suppressors I may go that way. Time to count the pennies.

Can not stand the Glock like trigger on the Ruger striker fired nine I have. I keep it only because all the mags work with the matching carbine that I keep in a backpack rig. But I do not like that gun ... or the entire polymer striker fired concept. I hate the feel of it. And them.

Yep. The best trigger I've ever owned - and still own - is the stock trigger on the GP-100 I own. I'm not a trigger snob. I just want a trigger that ... well ... works. It does. I know, if I pull it the Jeff Cooper way, it'll break at some point pretty quickly. It does have kind of a "glass" feel.

My Rem 700 needs a drop in Timney. Just have not done it yet.

Bought a Henry pump .22 for nephew. Nice looking rifle, but lordy, that thing needs some polishing! Rough edges everywhere... very stiff.
Not impressed with the "out the door" finish (metal).
How many hundreds of rounds gots to go downrange to smooth it out?
Dunno yet.

Tell me more. Mine is sloppy. Not so sloppy that is does that "shake and fire" thing that 700s did for a while. But it doesn't feel good.

I have an XDS-9 that is all right for that with 7, 8. and 9 round magazines--the grip safety, if need be, allows carry Mexican style in an emergency.

Rarely go out anymore except to doctors, pt, tests, and pick up a couple items at a store. Due to my disability as my back is essentially kaput due to and worsened by my inflammatory arthritis and that in turn is affecting peripheral nerves like the arms, hand, feet, and legs.

But, I can go comfortable and carry a full size service weapon nowadays and fairly easily hide it since I retired from work this year.

It takes a little bit of a needle file and emery paper to produce a reliable trigger but best not shown here as my liability insurance will not work in the US.

I have one of the first models of the GP100 circa 1986 by model number. By now, via use and dryfiring, its trigger is butter smooth albeit probably above the weight that a lot of people want.

Triggers on the older forged and cast Rugers usually smooth up fairly well via dryfiring them and/or a simple spring adjustment which is a cheap fix. Part of it is the investment casting process can leave some roughness on parts.

Have no idea about the newer MIM type parts used on GP 100s and others such as Smith & Wesson but really have no interest in finding out.

I put a Timney on a brand new R700 action which I have still not barrelled. Talked with Weasel a long while back about what to barrel it in but Covid and arthritis complications caused me to put that on hold with a lot of other things.

I am putting together a Gock 20-10mm.
Any money that could have gone to the Beretta has been gobbled up by the Glock.
