Top Story

  • Beata Halassy had breast cancer - for the third time, despite chemotherapy and a mastectomy.

    She had cancer.

She gave it measles and it died. (Nature)

Beata is a virologist so she prepared her own virus culture - a mild strain intended for vaccine production - and had a colleague administer it. She has now been cancer-free for four years.

Naturally she wanted to publish the results of her research - on herself. That's where the real problems started, because scientific journals didn't want to touch it.

On the upside - apart from the whole thing about being alive - she now has funding to repeat this research to try to cure cancer in pets.

I get not wanting to encourage scientists to do experiments on themselves (though it's a fun fiction trope.) But burying the lede that a simple disease can cure cancer... it almost plays into the conspiracy theory that scientists don't really want to cure cancer, too much money at stake.

71 Evening and morning, early risers and Sunday toilers!

Just woke up from a two-pat dream. First I dreamed I awoke at one a.m. after maybe three hours' sleep, and it was *getting light outside*, so I was debating whether to get up and maybe go back to sleep in a couple of hours. I repeat, I was dreaming this.

Part two: I was helping a doctor and a nurse prepare some kind of needles at a table in a mall food court. Then the nurse, a stern but pretty dark-haired woman, tells me that if my numbers don't change, I will have to go on a SUDI (?) diet in March 2015 (???). I'm frustrated, and cry out that I have already changed my diet enormously so I wouldn't have to. The nurse moves to another table, and then when I look, so has the doctor.

This is one time when I'm glad to be awake, lemme tell ya.

Not having fully read the "Wreck It Ralph" piece, I read enough to suss out its simple truism -- more often than not, sequels to a successful film suck and are not worth watching. Please note that I wrote "more often than not" and not "always". There are exceptions, but not many.

That applies to written works, too. IMHO, Philip Jose Farmer's "Riverworld" series illustrated this in the printed works' world. So did Isaac Asimov's orgy of wretched excess as he tried to tie his "Foundation" and "I Robof" worlds together.

Remakes more often than not fail to satisfy, too.

Went to Saturday Vigil Mass yesterday, which is rare for me. But I'm supposed to show Fitz today at 9:30 and it's an hour drive from Schloss Hadrian to Crosby, northeast of Houston.

It was, of course, a Novus Ordo service, but done very well. The Canon used was the long one that's a mirror of that in the TLM, which was a comfort. The music, as usual, was appalling. Cocktail lounge stuff.

No, RealClearPolitics has the Republicans at 217 in the house with Alaska, several California races, and a couple in Arizona and Colorado yet to be called. We'll pick up at least one of those. Remember 2022, when it took forever to finalize results on the West Coast House races and we were all moaning and gnashing our teeth, only to wind up flipping (albeit barely) the House. We'll hold on, but we're not expanding our majority by much, if at all.

172 I don't even begin to get what the "ethical" concern is over experimentation on oneself. I don't see even the slightest hint of an ethical problem there. Experiment on OTHER people, yes, ethical concerns. Experiment on oneself? Good luck!

Reading the article, the "ethical" concern seems to be that other people will see that and try the treatment themselves. Yes. And? Your point?

If I'm dying, and I'm desperately looking around for something to try, hell yes I'm going to consider "the researcher had enough faith in it that they were willing to risk it on themselves" to be a pretty damn strong selling point.

Anyone who tries to control what a dying person can do to try and survive is a homicidal control freak.

188 Morning peeps. About cancer...

My late father had prostate cancer back in the 70's. The prognosis was grim, but his oncologist suggested he see if he was a candidate for a new, experimental treatment that cryogenically froze the parts of the prostate that were cancerous and removed them.

The surgery was done in Pittsburg, PA. Initially it seemed a success. But I'm reminded of a thing my mother said during this ordeal; "there is a lot more money to be made in the treatment of cancer than there is in curing it."

She was convinced that a "cure" for certain, common cancers had been around for awhile, but would never see the light of day. And the possibility existed that the very outfit that had the cure also provided palliative care and drugs for the terminally ill at a much larger profit margin.

Personally, I rate it at likely if not outright true.

I have thought often how foolish people are to think they’re the first ones to think of or try some of these ideas. Since almost the beginning of civilization there have religious groups or others that decided to despise children and commit to either celibacy or homosexuality, it’s nothing new. We don’t hear much about them because once a group goes down that path, it’s just one or two generations before they’re gone, erased from history with no descendants.

Pray for Jules recovery and to support Farmer throughout this frightening trial. We saw how God can accomplish miraculous things (J.J. Sefton's complete remission from a glioblastoma cancer.)

Go to God in prayer, repeatedly. 1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to cast all our cares on God because he cares about us. Jeremiah 19:11 shows us that God wants peace for us, not evil or trouble. Psalm 65:2 reminds us that it's God who hears our prayers. Psalm 102:17 assures us he'll hear the prayer of the destitute and will not despise that prayer.

Cheaper than a modern Stetson and just as good a quality if not better.

258 Trump’s offer to pay off Kamala’s stiffed vendors is the ultimate Boss Move. All of the political types in the Kamala campaign skimmed their money off the top first, this isn’t about paying them. This is about paying the small time vendors who have no leverage; the cooks, the drivers, the small time service providers who are easy to stiff.

Think of Trump like a Roman Emperor who’s just won a bitter civil war - what stronger move is there than addressing the defeated sides foot soldiers and saying “The conflict is over, your own leaders have betrayed you, but I will pay your wages now. Join my Legions!”
That’s what Trump is doing.

People have no idea how much of their tax dollars are used to attack them. There is a massive ecosystem of non-profits who get government grants to "raise awareness" or "fight poverty" just to pass it on the Democrats and progressive political organizations.

The GOP could have shut this down, but they're also on the take, and we will once again see how eager they are to really reform by whether they go back to pre-Dubya funding cycles or keep up with giant, impenetrable omnibus bills.

329 Asking because I really don't know. Is there a state that does not allow abortions in the case of rape?
Posted by: grammie winger

---

Here's the dirty little secret:

Rape abortions don't really exist. When a woman is raped and goes to the hospital she is given a huge dose of medications to prevent pregnancies and STDs.

There could be some weird oddball cases where some lady is locked in a basement for months at a time or whatever, but "rape" in the sense of common usage isn't responsible more than a handful of pregnancies a year.

It is an outlier of outliers.

The Senate leadership "fight" is one that's almost wholly fought in secret. Generally the Senators don't want anyone to know who they are backing. Because if they are thought to be backing the 'wrong' candidate for leader they'll be frozen out of cherry committee positions and get a shitty spot at the grifting table.

Thune might not be the strong horse here... seeing as how he's pissing on the leg of the leader of the entire GOP. Who has a mandate to fix shit. Thune's shit, specifically.

336 Link in previous thread about Comcast looking to sell MSNBC, as well as mention that CNN is also on the auction block. They are very unlikely to sell of course, because this is the clearest indicator that both of those channels are quite literally worthless: They are losing massive amounts of money and now that all of the campaign money is drying up, their future prospects are horrific.

Although it would be fun to see Musk buy MSNBC and hire Tucker to run it.

337 I think we're occasionally allowed a glimpse into modern politics and the Deep State.

It's part of why they're so up in arms about Musk potentially being the head of an office of government accountability. Every penny they spend is in pursuit of laundering.

People have no idea how much of their tax dollars are used to attack them. There is a massive ecosystem of non-profits who get government grants to "raise awareness" or "fight poverty" just to pass it on the Democrats and progressive political organizations...

The stereotypical rape is thought of as a violent encounter with a stranger, but that's the exception, and of course there are situations (which became endemic a decade ago) when consensual sex was retroactively declared rape.

Funny how we were all panicked about date rape and less than a decade later, ordered co-eds to let guys walk into their locker room naked and watch them shower.

374 The Sega delisting is odd, baffling, and even malicious. The games have been on sale for years/decades. People a legal, valid way to 'own' emulation, rather than piracy. It gave Sega additional money by the "Long Tail" of commerce, small amount of sales over time.

Some possible reasons, none pro-consumer:
A) Sega is intending on creating their own games storefront (Steam, Epic, GOG, etc.)
B) Sega is charged a fee for each/all their content on those storefronts, and revenue is below expenses.
C) Sega is going to sell its back catalog, either in whole or individually.

"A" is a bad idea due to overcrowding - see streaming TV. It's a massive expense to start, there are already plenty of storefronts already, and people won't like having to rebuy/subscribe for existing content yet again.

"B" is unlikely - A quick looks shows Steam only has an upfront cost per game published and then a % per sale. An expense for new games, but current are already paid for, a sunk cost.

"C" worries me. This is eating seed corn. Some random company could claim and vault some beloved series, or create an abomination of a sequel (see Disney' acquisitions), killing it dead.

375 Regarding e(X)-Twitter and Elon Musk:

It is his toy. I don't think he's going to try and turn around and sell it, or do crazy monetization other than to help lower expenses from inefficiency (like paying 100's of green-haired, porcupined-faced malcontents to act like they're his boss) or provide some sort of income stream.

There's going to be missteps regarding cash, but he's playing at a higher level - it's not about making $$$ this month. It's about learning and studying what those changes may do both short-term and long-term.

Instead, and the reason I call it his toy and plaything, is the fact that he was basically forced to buy for $44 Billion, with a capital B. He was trying to get a real evaluation of the price (thus investigation of Bot content), because it was over-priced. But he would have been out a lot of money if he pulled out - I think there was even a threat of lawsuit if he did. Probably billions, lawsuits, time wasted, nothing gained.

So he paid up. And, having had to pay such a price for Twitter, it's now *HIS*. Not shareholders, not the middle-level managers, not the mid-wit managers. His. Good thing his counter to bad speech is more free speech.
