Top Story

  • We've already seen AMD's latest chip, the Ryzen 9800X3D, demolish the competition (including other AMD chips) for playing games. But how does it perform for the kind of work I do, like running databases, compiling code, processing mathematical models? (Phoronix)
For the geo mean of the more than 300 benchmarks, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D surpassed the Core i9 14900K and landed just behind the prior gen Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7950X3D processors. Compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered 1.34x the performance.
This is an 8 core CPU competing against Intel chips with 24 cores. Yes, the huge Phoronix benchmark suite compares both single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads, but then I run a mix of single-threaded and multi-threaded tasks in my daily work.

Its performance here is nothing short of amazing. 35% faster than the preceding generation is huge. I want one.

  • And it's sold out. (Tom's Hardware)

Seems there was some pent-up demand out there; supplies are selling out as soon as they arrive in stores.

7 Evening and morning to all you insomaniacals, early risers, and late toilers! ALLF -- At Long Last, Friday!

I've strained my neck and shoulder on the left side, no idea how, so I'm taking off from working out today. Very tempted to call in sick as well. I'll decide in a bit.

In the meantime -- Whatta week, huh?

Yeah, I've done the heating pad, ice, and the isometric exercises a chiropractor showed me some years ago when I had similar shoulder trouble on the other side. Some coffee now, and a small pipe, seems to be helping a little. The idea of dragging myself through even a half day at work is daunting . . . but so is the idea of sitting around here all morning until nap time.

I don't have to decide until after I shower and have breakfast, I guess. My boss is in St. Louis, but he's checking his email, and the other people in the office know how to make coffee!

22 News from Raconteur Press, and I'm not waiting for Sunday's Book Thread for this one:

Yesterday, on "Live from the Blanket Fort" on YouTube, it was announced that Raconteur Press would be putting out their first full length novel in a few months. It's going to be by John Van Stry, and will take place in his Wolfhounds universe. Its focus will be on a side-character on a different world in the realm, and not the main story playing out in the current set of Wolfhounds novels.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how John expands this universe beyond the main storyline, and it's already been hinted strongly at that this won't be the only novel in this new side-series. He seems to have "potato chip syndrome" with his novels: Can't have just one. :-) It's a running gag at this point, John goes to write a "short story" and suddenly there's 5 novels in his head with a sixth banging at the door demanding to be let in.

Coffee to get going...gotta prime the pump. The chocolate milk just washes down the meds, so just a shot, not even a full glass. (I could drink the whole quart) The blueberry pancakes and bacon suppress the tummy rumbles as it all processes. Gotta make a lil' extra for the pups.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at November 08, 2024 04:42 AM (3Ope8)

25 And it's sold out. (Tom's Hardware)

Yup. Me at the end of yesterday's tech thread:

"It's 09:50 EST, and the Ryzen 9 9800X3D is already sold out at Newegg.

Something tells me it's gonna be a popular buy for gamers who self-build computers in the next couple of months.
"

And from what you write today Pixy, this chip is going to be difficult to get in the coming months. Everyone's going to want this thing.

Intel's in some deep kim-chi now.

Well, now that we have an optimistic outlook about the future --! I am really considering putting in my papers on Monday, and working until the last day my employer will be open before Christmas, around 12/20. That'll give me two more months' pay almost. Since I worked this whole year, that will add a bit to my SS starting in Jan. or Feb. And I could start taking my pension after Christmas.

January does not seem like a good time to go up to Indiana and look around. But I've got to know what it's like.

Miss Linda is the issue. She won't discuss this. The only thing I can see to do is present her with the accomplished fact -- "I'm retiring" -- and hope she'll come around, at least enough to help me even if she doesn't want to move.

39 Also on retiring: Since my office is not going to move soon, which was accelerating my plan (I don't want to organize that and I don't want to pay for parking), I *could* work until the budget is in the can, say around mid-March. But the idea of that commute every day is . . . depressing.

From the article you posted: He continued: "Although no one should have to wait hours to vote, these lines signal what we have known for months: Gen Z will elect Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump today."

I think that Gen Z could clearly see the economic disastrous no-future they were in and said, "F that, I'm not walking into their economic woodchipper, I want a future. I'm voting for Trump."

It has been this way since mankind learned to walk upright.

But we as a nation now shelter our young children from the smaller pain of mistakes that children inevitably make.

And then we wonder why they never learned from mistakes until they make a massive life altering mistake that can absolutely NOT be recovered from.

Yes, this is a generalization, but as a nation, I think it is a fair generalization.

You're not wrong, not even a little bit.

Wisdom comes from experience. Experience often comes from making bad decisions at first and suffering the consequences.

This is why disciplining one's children is so important. Children must come to understand cause and effect, and that actions always have consequences. Later on they can learn to reason through their potential choices, actions, and what the consequences are likely to be.

You look at what is unleashed on society when a parent doesn't discipline their child; That's a hot mess that nobody wants to hire or retain as an employee. Bad decisions, poor behaviour, and a terrible work ethic. Employers have been lamenting for a while that the intern-level hires they've been getting are completely incapable of actually doing the job and are ridiculously fragile.

So yeah, toughen them up early and let them make small mistakes so they can learn and grow.

108 The local dump is talking about making the Hard Rock collapse site into a historic landmark. Not because of that, but because in 1960, as one of the two downtown Woolworth's, it was the site for the first lunch counter integration protest in town. You have to admire their interest in history. But the local Fox outlet keeps showing a B & W photo of black men and women sitting at the lunch counter with a black woman serving them. Somehow I doubt that pic is from 1960; if Woolworth's wouldn't serve them then, they wouldn't have hired them.

Finally, too, they are starting to tear down the abandoned Six Flags amusement park site in the east of the city. It was ballyhooed in 2004 as a big moneymaker for the city and state. Then came Katrina, and floods, which anybody could have told them would happen. It's been sitting there unused for almost twenty years.

160 On the Brave thing, let me add that the guy who made it can be thought of as a political ally. His name is Brendan Eich. He invented Javascript. He was hired to head Mozilla (Firefox) back in the Obama era - and then was almost instantly canceled and fired for the heinous crime of donating a tiny amount of money to the CA anti-gay-marriage Proposition, at a time when that was the same (stated) position of Obama himself, and that Californians - Californians! - themselves voted something like 70% for. So he said screw you and founded Brave.

So, on top of it being technically superior - FAR better at privacy and security than pretty much any browser other than Librewolf (more on that in a sec) with excellent built in ad blocking and a semi-decent alternative search engine to Google - you can also enjoy participating in Eich's middle finger to the rest of the tech elites.

I mentioned Librewolf. It's a fork of Firefox, and if you *really* prefer Firefox's UI to Chromium/Brave for some reason, then it's what I would suggest. It's the only other browser I'm aware of that comes even close to Brave's privacy and security features, and might even be a tiny bit better at it.

It irritated me that I wasn't taught it in college or elsewhere and only knew after a visit to a pediatricians office with the baby, but:

"Yes, Aleve and Tylenol are generally safe to take at the same time. However, taking them at different times is often more effective.

A person could start, for example, by taking Tylenol in the morning. The pain may return before the next scheduled dose, depending on the strength of the Tylenol. At the first sign of pain, a person could take Aleve and continue to alternate the two as necessary.

Staggering the medications can help to extend the relief from pain.

If instead, a person takes both at the same time, the combined pain relief may wear off before it is safe to take the next doses."

178 I have long suspected that humans natural tendency is towards subjugation under ruling families. It would make things easier to not have to think about leadership that way.

Its why the American Revolution was so unique - and even then a LARGE number of victors simply wanted to institute a modified monarchy.

I've long said most people - D and R alike - really yearn for a benevolent monarch. The argument revolves around how you define benevolent; what they want the monarch to do.

Different people have different reactions to various drugs. For me, I have always found acetaminophen completely useless, no effect on me at all. Same for tramadol, my body ignores it. In the other hand good old Aspirin works like a miracle drug on me for general pain or fever, and ibuprofen is my go-to for any joint or deep muscle pain.

204 Re: 29 Grumpy. Supply of the 9800X3D is going to be massive, but it will probably be delayed in the rest of the world while AMD gets as many as they can in the US before the tariffs hit.

Remember, these are the same chiplettes as the rest of the Zen 5 desktop, laptop and server line is using, just with a new mounting tech and the Vcache chip.

There will be some initial production ramp up to get the new process down perfect, but these use less silicon than the 7800X3D, and there was zero shortage of those until AMD stopped production to clear the channel for Zen 5.

Intel is in serious trouble. Serious enough it's sounding like nVidia is going to take their shot at an Arm for Windows APU to try and snap up that laptop market Intel is about to lose hard.

Wild times coming.
