There is a horrifying little short story by Anthony Boucher, written in the '50s I think, about two college professors who are studying psi powers like telekinesis, and the possibility of changing from one dimension or timeline to another. A presidential election is on, and one of the candidates -- a clear dictator-to-be -- wins. So the heroes switch into an alternate timeline where their candidate, a pro-democracy professor like themselves, wins the election.
And . . . it turns out in that timeline, this professor is a worse dictator, and his goons smash the apparatus the heroes use. They can't go back. As one of them mutters, "I, a stranger and afraid . . . in a world I damned well made." Yesterday I felt as though I were living the front half of that story. Corsair: I bought a very expensive power supply from them that had a data feed back to the motherboard to relay heat information. The driver was written so poorly that it refreshed the USB bus multiple times a second making it impossible to safely eject any device plugged into the USB bus. Researched it and found out tons of other customers who bought this had the same problem. Not impressed. Workaround: Uninstall the driver, unplug the data cord, and use it as a regular power supply.
Thirteen months into its life (just past warranty) it started crowbarring (sudden power off) for no reason, multiple times a day. Replaced it with a Bronze rated 650 power supply from "Deep Cool" which has worked faithfully for me for years in the same machine. Looked into getting the Corsair power supply serviced, but the shipping costs were more than the replacement power supply. Found out this was a common problem for other customers too. I avoid Corsair's products now. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 06, 2024 04:14 AM (O7YUW) 30

Ach, only three days of gloating and belittling America's enemies? A week would be far more appealing. An overly-inebriated Werner plans on making multiple crank calls to Heads of State abroad that the election of the Trump heralds the onset of Der Tag, when names shall be taken and asses kicked. There is also a pool to be organized on how quickly the Z-Man of Ukraine will attempt to flee to a non-extradition country. Surely we shall not be deprived of such fun and merriment?

Mozilla: Stop stripping out features I use in Firefox and Thunderbird. Your relentless attack on a users' ability to configure and use their browser the way they want is what drives people to look at other browsers.
Drop the virtue signalling and advocacy stuff completely, and fire the "woke" from your company. They're a cancer and they're destroying you from within. You don't negotiate with cancer, you excise it (or you don't survive.) As a user, I want: - Feature richness - The ability to control practically everything in my browser. I'm perfectly fine if a lot of these are hidden behind "about:config" so long as I can find documentation on them. The big ones should be in the Settings UI though. - New settings and features to be opt-in (not opt-out) - My settings to be maintained and preserved with each upgrade. If you're going to overwrite a setting I've set that's different from the previous default, ask me with a confirmation dialog! I stay with you now more because of the extensions/add-ons I rely on: NoScript, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, CanvasBlocker, and Port Authority, and less because of the browser itself. Please, just stop shooting your feet repeatedly. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 06, 2024 04:36 AM (O7YUW) 71

From that article at TheReg: "Schneider Electric confirmed that it is investigating a breach as a ransomware group Hellcat claims to have stolen more than 40 GB of compressed data — and demanded the French multinational energy management company pay $125,000 in baguettes or else see its sensitive customer and operational information leaked.
And yes, you read that right: payment in baguettes. As in bread." And how, exactly, does Hellcat expect to receive delivery of all these perishable bread products without exposing where they are, and immediately being arrested for extortion and larceny? Ransomware as a prank is the only thing I can think of here. They'll pick a location of another company or individual they want to prank, have all the bread delivered there, and watch the fireworks ensue. @106/Disinterested FDA Director and Pfizer Board Member:
Those are good extensions. Indeed. I have a few others, but those are the Big 5 I insist on now, with Port Authority being the latest addition that prevents remote website servers from being able to portscan my local network from the inside. There is absolutely no valid justification for doing that. Disappointed to hear Firefox keeps getting worse. The enshittification seems to have slowed down, and the browser is still quite usable in its current form. They went through a phase where they kept neutering useful features or UI config abilities out of the browser because of a modern UI fetish (or something.) It was maddening. My top extension in Chrome is uMatrix, but I hear that still works in Firefox, too. The web is unusable without blocking most scripts and all ads. I don't know how other people even do it. Agreed on "unusable". I got a taste of it the other day on my first ever smartphone. I immediately went back to my desktop to browse. What other people do: They find someone like us that knows how to set things up properly and train them how to use the add-ons, or they suffer. Still a little hesitant until 270. I remember in 2020 I went to bed with Trump a sure winner to waking up at daylight and Biden somehow had found votes from those box trucks to push him over the top.
Posted by: Colin at November 06, 2024 05:25 AM (wlQdF) In 2020, the vibe was completely different; the dickweeds at Fox had preemptively called key states for Joe and only Trump himself was claiming wins in the disputed states. This year, PA has been called for Trump by everyone, and Fox has called almost all the other swing states for him; even if they somehow steal Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin (virtually impossible), Alaska will put him over the top. At this point, the non-Fox networks are just refusing to call it (1) out of spite and (2) out of fear that caling it will so demoralize the urban Democrat election workers that they don't bother to steal a few more House or Senate seats. Everyone in the Press, tech and academia should read this comment on that Slashdot thread.
"I just don't understand how Nixon could have won. Nobody I know voted for him". You don't get . it because you probably live in a bubble, at least socially. But you're not alone, because you have a lot of compatriots on Slashdot. BTW, Trump is also projected to win the popular vote. And the GOP will take the Senate. And it's looking like the GOP will keep the House, albeit narrowly. In short, if you can't possibly understand why Trump won, maybe you should get outside of your circles and mingle with other folk who think differently than you. BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF THEM. Or, you can just keep hanging with the folks here who will insist that it's all due to cheating, Russian "interference", vote suppression, etc etc etc. Bottom line: Americans know who Donald Trump is. They know his ideas, his positions, and have watched the whole legal circus surrounding him these past two years. They have plenty to judge him by. And they chose him anyway Maybe ask yourself "Huh, could it have been that the American electorate considered the alternative that fucking bad? Yes. Yes they did. Look for the recriminations to start in earnest today. Today will be chaotic between the slow Press men who run the, "Kamala was brilliant, this is all insane" line and the quicker ones who pivot to the "Trump didn't win, Harris lost and the Democrats lost and they should have had a proper primary to field a better candidate, since *any* better candidate would have defeated the paper tiger."
That second narrative will be the only one left by the end of the week. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 06, 2024 06:03 AM (HnUIn) 308

Here is the magnanimous report by the AP:
"The victory validates his bare-knuckle approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal – often misogynistic and racist – terms as he pushed an apocalyptic picture of a country overrun by violent migrants. The coarse rhetoric, paired with an image of hypermasculinity, resonated with angry voters – particularly men – in a deeply polarized nation." Suck it, AP.
