The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Voting is among the most important rights that Marylanders have. Any action that intimidates prospective voters, especially on the eve of such a consequential election, will not be tolerated. Let me be clear: These unnerving letters are unacceptable, and Maryland voters should know that their decision to vote this Election Day is entirely theirs to make.” Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown

Quote II

"He is supported today in the public gallery by his mother, sister, brother-in-law and two friends. The fact that he has that support will not surprise your honour, having read what people have written about him." Nigel Power KC, (Defense attorney)

Quote III

"RIP MY BEST FRIEND. Thank you for the best 7 years of my life. Thank you for bringing so much joy to us and the world. I’m sorry I failed you but thank you for everything," Mark Longo

Could fluoride be on its way out of municipal water?

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Says Donald Trump Would Push to Remove Fluoride from Drinking Water

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Saturday that Trump would push to remove fluoride from drinking water on his first day in office.

Fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water has long been considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the last century

Pentagon drops 51 disqualifying conditions as part of recruiting push

The Pentagon is using a pilot program to shed a longstanding list of medical conditions that have prevented individuals from joining the military for decades.

The program, launched in 2022, has seen 6,000 service members enlist who were previously disqualified for medical conditions, officials said. At that time, the list included 38 conditions. That number has since risen to 51.

91 Meanwhile, my town is diligently trying to get fluoride INTO the water, and if you don't agree you're a racist.

I may have told this story here before. I went to a dentist in San Diego, which did not at the time fluoridate their water, a bit before I retired, thinking I should use the benefits before I lost them. Nothing needed to be done.

Dentist said, “you have great teeth. You must have grown up in a city that fluoridated their water.”

“Well, actually, I grew up on a farm outside of town; we had to have our own well for water.”

“It must have been naturally high in fluoride.”

The amazing predictive value of all-caps SCIENCE.

I never understood why, if some people aren’t getting enough fluoride through brushing, governments couldn’t just hand out free fluoride supplements instead of forcing everyone to medicate themselves whether they needed it or not… until 2020.

94 Could fluoride be on its way out of municipal water?

My dentist put me on prescription high-fluoride toothpaste several years ago, trying to preserve my remaining teeth. I told him we don't drink tap, but of course I grew up on fluoride municipal water. Every night. Brush, spit, don't rinse. In another fifty years, it may give me some health problems. haha.

I remember as a kid on family vacation seeing the John Birch Society billboards on the highway west. 'Way back in the middle of the last century. Those wackos. They thought fluoride in the water supply was dangerous and the government was being infiltrated by communists. Haha.

Even more alarming is what the data say about the generational decline: among native-born senior citizens, 74% pass the citizenship test, while a mere 20% of native-born Americans under the age of 45 can pass it.
Only 2 of 5 Americans can name all three branches of government.
Less than one-third of Americans can name the five rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

The Democratic candidate just got a zinger of a boost from a hugely respected poll, the Selzer survey in Iowa. That suggests she will do far better in the Hawkeye State than most had previously thought, and thus across the Midwest.

Yeah, right.

The Economist also had this howler:

I’d also love to see Americans get around to electing their first female president. Doing so is a welcome mark of liberal democracy: leave it to horrible authoritarian regimes in places such as Russia or China to refuse to let women near the top of most power structures.

Demonstration of power.

When the Nazis took over Germany in 1933, one very effective technique they used was to take potential dissidents, and throw them into a concentration camp - but only for a couple of weeks.

When the dissidents came out of the camp, they tended to be very quiet and apolitical afterwards.

Missing limbs
Birds with lack of flight
Loss of vision or hearing
Predators unable to hunt sufficiently
Prey unable to evade predators
Failure to thrive due to health deficits
Captivity-raised lack of survival instincts
Conditions requiring ongoing medication

This RAID involved making the victims sit outside their home for 5 hours while these maniacs tore up everything. They were denied the right to call legal counsel. Feds went thru closets, leaving a complete mess. They broke soap bottles in the bathroom. They took apart the man’s TOILET upon escorting him before he could use it because apparently there could be some important squirrel propaganda hidden in there (I’m assuming in the tank). 😒 Please make it make sense.

They further questioned his wife’s immigration status (Germany), in spite of her having all necessary docs & ID.

Because these psychos descended unannounced & hunted down these ordinarily docile rescues in their normally peaceful home, somebody supposedly got bitten. They used that as justification for killing them to examine brain tissue for signs of rabies.

(Let’s be clear… they were observed putting on gloves. Was anyone ACTUALLY bitten?)

What’s really going on here?

We all want to know.

If you are thinking, “It’s just a squirrel “, look at your pets. Do it right now. Why do you think you are exempt from over-reach like this, & what’s different from your dog or cat?

WHAT???

I am a feline rescuer. I’ve also rescued other animals to either be rehab-released, or homed as appropriate. I have been doing this most of my life, in fact. Birds, including a baby hummingbird once. Rabbits. Lizards. Snakes. Dogs. What’s the difference, I ask you. This is NOT about permits. He had the paperwork. Signed. It was in final process.

Why do Feds have the time & resources for one MF squirrel that’s not bothering anybody? If they need something to do, I have a few suggestions. Some legit tasks first… and a couple of impolite instructions after that.

I usually try to avoid posting things that end up in the political arena, but here we are. This is as far as I’m concerned a bipartisan concern anyway, so today I am speaking up. NONE of us should be ok with this type of abusive home invasion. Do you want to be treated like a criminal, like a drug dealer, on your own property.. when you have done nothing harmful to anyone? I’m absolutely certain that I don’t.

AS a rescuer MYSELF, this hits hard. I’ve had tragic abuses committed by other organizations that I had to then correct & be the responsible party - costing me hundreds in the aftermath, plus deciding under duress of the situation to adopt as a result. Over the lifetime of a pet, that’s thousands. I continue to do this, in spite of not having a donation for it in 4 years. So to me, it’s an important issue. We talk all the time about being responsible citizens, but when it comes to actually demonstrating it, who steps up? In my neighborhood, it’s just me. Out of pocket.

So YEAH… #JusticeForPeanut

Regarding the "Trump voter's humanity...". Isn't that just the fucking thing about the left? They so readily believe that their opponents are simply not human beings at all. That's a good way to define leftism. "A leftist is someone who believes that they're a human being and non-leftists are not." It's the kind of backasswards thinking you see in primitive religions and cultures where the guys wrap a giant stick around their dicks and dance around.

The result was Archduke Maximilian, who was eventually trundled off to rule Mexico in the anti-Republican fiasco concocted by Napoleon III.

Both female and male voters in Iowa support Trump, women by a five-point margin, 51% to 46%, and men by a significant 17-point margin, 56% to 39%, Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said. Trump also leads among independents, 53% to 36%.

Since there are significantly more Rs then Ds, and more independents then Rs in Iowa Kamala can't afford to lose independents by 15 points and come even close.

Now is Emerson right? Who knows. But their crosstabs make sense.

This was back in the day when parents entrusted the school to take care of and TEACH their children. This was also back in the day when you had a vibrant Parent Teacher's Assocation and regular parent/teacher conferences.

Parents back in the day trusted teachers.

But that all changed in the late 70's with the infiltration of our Education System by Socialist/Marxist leaning teachers and the parents were not paying attention...soon enough parents were focusing more on making money and getting rich in the 80's and the Socialist/Commies made more inroads. Then the INTERNET, GAMES, DISTRACTIONS...more distractions through the 90's early 2000's they kept sliding in to every crevice of education...SOCIAL MEDIA until they had control of our major universities and leaping forward today an entire mindset of our youth...

Which is why in 2 days we will vote...and THEY will vote.

Aluminum smelters used to use the mineral Cryolite, Na3AlF6, molten, as the solvent in which the aluminum ore, bauxite was dissolved in the electrolysis pots. There was one commercial source, in Greenland, now mined out. They now make a synthetic flux from Fluorite, which is a very common mineral.

I am going to rebuild it. Initial plan was to swap it out for a 4L80E, but there are enough issues to make it impractical: crossmember has to be moved, wire harness modified, transfer case won't fit, and ratio spread is much different. I have already ordered a master rebuild kit and a new torque converter.

I did a 4L60E a few years ago so it should go OK.

You can derive the pinout of a simple relay like that from first principles. It's got an electromagnet inside it, that moves a steel arm that bears switch contacts. Frequently there will be both normally-closed contacts, and normally-open contacts (normally meaning when the relay is unactivated). Some may have only normally-open contacts. Take an ohm meter, and read resistance between all possible pairs of pins. You should have 3 possible readings: zero ohms, infinity, and a few hundred ohms. The latter one indicates those 2 pins connect to the relay coil. Zero ohms? That's your normally-closed contacts. Infinity? One of those two is your normally-open contact, and that one should read infinity to all the other four. Now, energize the relay coil with 12 volts, and you should hear it click. That normally-open pin should now read zero ohms to ONE other pin, and that one will be your moving contact on the arm.

After than, UTC will just run at TAI rate (although still lagging by whatever offset is there when it goes into effect).

Still, there will be something to keep UTC from drifting too far from UT1( mean solar time, the modern equivalent of GMT).

I forget, but at current rates, UTC will get ahead of UT1 by maybe 1 minute in 100 years, or a few hundred, I forget.

Right now, the earth's rotation has sped up. We had the shortest mean solar day on record back around 2022.

When the current UTC scheme was put into place, the mean solar day was about 86,400.003 SI (which TAI ticks at) seconds. This translated to a leap second every 6 months roughly.

Mean rate now is a smidge (less than 1 ms) below 86,400 second. If this keeps up, they would need a *negative* leap-second, which I'm sure would break the entire internet, and probably 90% of computer systems on the planet....

460 Fords don't do that. V-10 Tritons, either. And seldom, would a Mopar 440 sound like that, until End of Engine Life stages.

The old big block Fords though, would puke out block mounted "waggle" (cam driven "waggle" arm) fuel pumps like a cat would a hairball.

Everything is a tradeoff, I guess?

566 Mean rate now is a smidge (less than 1 ms) below 86,400 second. If this keeps up, they would need a *negative* leap-second, which I'm sure would break the entire internet, and probably 90% of computer systems on the planet....

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at November 04, 2024 12:56 AM (w6EFb)

True, a negative leap second would make Y2K look like a Crowdstrike automated update.

We used to “leap smearing” on our strata 2 servers used throughout our data centers. So a positive leap second just gets spread out over 24 hours, with every second just a smidge longer than normal. And the extra UTC second is just ignored because who the heck cares?

With a negative leap second you couldn’t do that. Of course, even now most software can’t handle valid 61-second UTC minutes, so who knows.

567 I used to love going to junkyards. I thought they would never go away. never argued with the guy at our local area yard and he always seemed to have reasonable prices. But I’ve since read some great lore and junkyard anecdotes on the automotive forums.

Usually involves some punk who tries to $&@k with the owner on some rare part that is worth a small fortune and get cute, and the prized part crushed in front of his eyes. “Get outta heah”. I always liked guys like that, rough around the edges and no time for BS but gave us kids the run of the place and good deals on parts.

578 >> We used to “leap smearing”

There is a big controversy over leap smearing. The NIST and the other standards bodies are dead against it, but Google and Amazon will do it, and that could cause a mess with the NTP pool, if some servers smear and others don't.

Microsoft went with the NIST, and is opposed to leap smearing.

The NIST is not opposed to smearing as a matter of principle, just that a smear does not conform to the actual definition of UTC and is therefore wrong.

https://tinyurl.com/y9xrbm5l

Green line is the moving yearly average, the gray spikes are the seasonal range. Note there is a yearly variation of a bit over 2ms. That's mostly due to the Moon, IIRC.

And you can see summer of 2022 had the shortest mean solar day on record so far. And note the green average is turning back up. We'll go a few more years without the need for a leap second.

656 Morning, all you insomaniacals! Yeah,, yeah, it's Monday. But remember: Compared to being on the wrong side of the ground, even a bad Monday is pretty small kumquats, nicht wahr?

I slept enough, had some kind of dream in which chiseling dried excrement off a public building was portrayed as actually kind of fun (such is my dim impression, anyway), and am having some coffee in prep for a light workout. You?

659 Jeepers Wolfus, for the past six months we have been chiseling human excrement off of our Trump supporting bridge. There have occasionally been fish guts deposited too which lends a certain eau de stink about the place. We are facing malevolent forces, although that tends to be typical on a Monday morning.

661 President Trump had out three rallies on Sunday and four scheduled for today. This man is doing everything he can to win this election.

Meanwhile, Kamala had one event on Sunday and has one scheduled for Monday. Why so few? I can only guess but It very well could be due to her having to answer her Saturday night live fan mail and sober up from the box wine celebration that came from that.

This difference is a small detail, but I think it speaks loudly about who will truly work hard at running the government.

Wolfus's Law of DST: There is always one clock you forget to set, or set back, the night before. This year, for me, it was the coffeemaker and the microwave. Neither is crucial like my watches, but still I forgot them.

You're lucky. The true stunning heat is gone, but the warm stickiness still drags on, like a movie you wish would end but doesn't. It rained a bit yesterday afternoon as the light was waning.
