Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be November? Did everyone survive Halloween? Any hauntings at the range?

FUNdamentals
So we had a fair amount of fundamentals focus going on at the TX MoMe. Lots of individualized instruction on the handgun range and some very good shooting back on the rifle range. Our pal and host extraordinaire Rancher Bob shares a look at how some of these rifle targets looked afterward. For those not attending, we had targets at 50, 100, 200, 300, 500, 750 and 1000 yards.

300 yds - lots of hits on the target

All in all, not bad shooting for a bunch of morons! Nicely done! All y'all should be proud of yourselves.

Guns of the Horde
Guess who bought a new AR upper! Go ahead! Guess!

Why, it;s none other than our pal CBD who is out there buying uppers!

Oh look! Another gun I don't need, but really, really want! But I have an excuse; Weasel made me get it.
That's a White Oak Varmint Upper with a 24" barrel. And if you look carefully you will see that ejects on the correct...left...side! Yup! They make left-hand uppers, which is very nice, because depending on the load and how the rifles are gassed, the ejected shells get mighty close to my face. The lead time was supposed to be six-eight weeks, which was a miserable bit of news to get from White Oak, but they built it and shipped it in just a couple of weeks. And when it arrived and I stripped it to check a couple of things -- like was the gas key staked properly, and was the barrel nice and tight -- I discovered why they have a good reputation. Everything was exactly as it should be. It was even lubed well, although I run my ARs dripping wet, so it got some more oil before I reassembled it. I also noticed that they had test fired it, which is a nice touch.
I put it on a lower with a good trigger (Timney), but eventually I will build a dedicated lower, because it is sort of a specialized rifle and I will hopefully get better accuracy with an adjustable stock and a rifle-length buffer and spring. But for now? The carbine-length stuff worked just fine when I sighted it in at my little 25-yard range.
I shot about 40 rounds of 77 grain .223, when all I really needed was about 10 rounds to get it on paper. Because it was fun! Even contorting myself on a shooting position designed for pistols, it was a hoot to shoot a long-barreled rifle in a caliber that has seen shorter and shorter barrels on the market. The first round was on paper, so I knew that I got sort of close to maybe mounting the scope halfway decently. I know there are 93-step processes for mounting a scope, but all I did was make sure the upper was level, then I carefully leveled the scope as I slowly tightened the rings...checking the level after each round until I reached the specified tightness.
Next step? A 100 yard range!
And that's where everything fell apart...sort of. The eye relief and stock length (I put an adjustable stock on the lower) were way off because I had adjusted them while standing. So when I got behind the rifle on the bench I had to contort and squish and do all sorts of stuff that made the range babes run for the hills! Oh...my rear bag, which fit my other ARs perfectly, was a little low. What a mess.
But the rifle is very accurate, and that made it a very satisfying trip in spite of my own-goal with the rifle set-up. My best was a 0.45 MOA three shot group, and I had a couple of five-shot groups nicely under 1.0 MOA, all with commodity 77 grain ammo!
I learned a bunch of lessons, but they can be distilled down to: "Test your set-up before you go to the range!" I'm not complaining though. I shot an accurate rifle on a gorgeous autumn day, chatted with the friendly range officer (There is one asshole at this range), and had a great time.
And the best part is that I have to go back when I fix my set-up! First World Problem?

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the H Upmann AJ Fernandez

I have said it before, you cannot go wrong with H Upmann cigars. The H Upmann AJ Fernandez is no exception. The company describes it as a "historic" Cuban-legacy brand with a fresh blend drawn from an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper leaf and a hearty interior of premium Dominican and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos.
Yeah;yeah;yeah, blah, blah...
Marketing guys. Annoying aren't they? But this part hits the nail: "The result is a medium to full-bodied profile of cedar, nuts, coffee bean, and oak with hints of pepper from the first draw to the last."
In my experience I have found that the first time you put any cigar to your mouth, you get the immediate taste of the tobacco and all the more subtle notes are there as well. Then, as you ease into the middle of the cigar, they mellow out into a blend with the smoke and overall taste of the stick. The AJ Fernandez hits you with the cedar and pepper right from the start and those flavors do not diminish. This can be off-putting to some but for most cigar smokers, it is a fine way to stay focused on the cigar, and to enjoy the flavor of whatever you may be enjoying with it. In my case, a generous dollop of Aberlour single malt. Additionally, I found, in my cigar at least, the coffee flavor ebbed and flowed with the smoke. I thought that was kinda cool and very pleasant.
Definitely a medium to full bodied smoke, they run about $10 each. Given that, it is a smoke you may "want" to have vice want to "try." But either way, you will likely enjoy it.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

31 First gun stuff for the week - last week I was ~~admonishing none of you homos to touch my stuff~~ asking nicely that no one go over and poach the rifle I was trying to get for sra blaster's Christmas present. That was Sunday night, auction expired noon Tuesday.

I won.

It's a Howa 1500 in the APC chassis. It's their already put together for long range shooting package in .308 - 24 inch heavy barrel with muzzle brake, bipod, and a 4-16x50 long range scope. APC stands for Australian Precision Chassis, and Howa is manufacturing in Japan, so of course it is cerakoted in American flag livery because Merica.

38 Cigar of the Week

That is my personal carry Keltec 9 mm...for when a holster is too obvious. It's a good piece, very accurate inside 10 yards. But it is light so it snaps a bit so be ready for it. A good choice when I was younger. I still carry it, but prefer the S&W .380. A much softer shoot for a dude over 29, and very accurate.

40 One range date this week (the other was spent entertaining an out of town non-gub loving friend). Once again began with sporadic success (at least I was on the plate), but then realized where many of the holes were meant my trigger finger wasn't properly placed, which in turn meant my grip was not right. Adjusted all that and voila,, success. Had the best score ever near the end, 164 out of 250. I'm creeping up on that 200 number....

41 Whelp, I got down to the farm this week and finally was able to test fire my first reloads. The good news is that the gun didn't explode, and I have all the body parts still attached to me that were attached when I started.
The bad news is that I could not get through a single magazine without at least one failure to feed, the slide not going completely back into battery. I am thinking that the issue is being caused by either improper sizing, insufficient taper crimp, or both. I had used the case gauge on all the rounds, and they fit, but some were admittedly a bit tight. I'd appreciate the thoughts of the experienced reloaders on the issue.

47 Range report - I took an intro to Steel shooting class on Wed night. Think of it like a scoot and shoot on steroids. I was the only student that hadn't done competitions and was the least proficient shooter, so I helped make everyone else feel better about themselves.

Regardless, it was great to learn how the program works and ask questions before diving into competition. We did several course runs and my shooting was...variable. It wasn't awful (mostly). Adding motion and the pressure of time challenges good fundamentals. Each run was about 25 seconds for me. Outside of misses, I didn't have many "procedurals" from failing to follow the course and instructions.

It was also good to work slowly and methodically on bullet counts and mag changes which I haven't done in the booth at the range.

I have more fundamentals work to do on my grip before throwing time and money into steel shoot competitions. But I learned stuff and that was good.

But I did some dry firing and field stripped and cleaned four pistols. It was relaxing.

Will have to consider carrying to work after Tuesday. Could be sporty in downtown Seattle if Trump wins.

If you watch it, yes, yes it has gotten too easy. But then I watched this guy's channel (X RING) and seems he is a bit of a ringer. So maybe it hasn't gotten too easy.

58 Howdy!

I bought a .357 Magnum (Colt King Cobra) revolver in early Oct. This month, I'm going to take an Intro in Firearms and range safety at the place I bought the revolver. I'll get some range time then. I'm looking at rifles at the moment and I really like that FPC 9mm by S&W. So, I'll take the plunge either this or next month and get one. I've heard and read nothing but positives about it, so that's a good sign. I asked about it here late in the thread, last week.

71 So, Dunderhead near disaster report: I have a company which does my loads for me. Previously, all of my loads have been with Hornady brass and those loads push Hornady's 174 grain ELD VT with a muzzle velocity of 2840 fps. Yeah, smoking hot load for an 06.

However, I had some Norma brass left over from something else, and, without thinking, packaged it up and sent it off to be loaded with same load I'm running in Hornady brass. It wasn't until later I found out Norma brass will run a bit hotter, load wise. In other words, loading the same powder charge in Norma brass will increase pressure, possibly to dangerous levels.

I got the brass back, all nicely loaded, sighed, headed to the range, slapped on the Magnetospeed and cringed while pulling the trigger. Shockingly, nothing untoward happened, well, other than a load that was running @ 2840 fps is now running at 2900 fps.

Surprisingly, accuracy doesn't seem to have suffered, nor is the brass showing signs of too much pressure. To say I got away with one is an understatement.

Try the plunk test using the pistol barrel chamber to test. Anything that requires encouragement to enter the chamber, set aside.

Get a Lee Factory Crimp Die, purists hate them and strictly speaking are unnecessary if you can taper crimp properly (twitchy on the 9mm though) but for range ammo they ensure better feeding through most firearms especially in 9mm. I would also consider whether your reloads are energetic enough for the specific pistol/slide/recoil spring that you are firing. Check what pistol that the reloading book cites and if yours differs in barrel length, locking type of action, and perhaps recoil springs (if yours is stronger, middle of the road, or weaker). Bullet profile and weight matters as well.

Easiest to begin reloading on revolvers because you have to control fewer variables than semi auto.

I have also been looking more and more at my retirements funds. It just might sway me to retire at 65 and escape NY instead of 67 which is my current plan.
Of course if he wins and the markets start rallying I also just might make a certain purchase (or purchases). Something in 6.5 Creedmoor. ;-)

78 It's a Howa 1500 in the APC chassis. It's their already put together for long range shooting package in .308 - 24 inch heavy barrel with muzzle brake, bipod, and a 4-16x50 long range scope.

My one was about $200 less but no free scope just the bipod [and two 10-rd magazines] so I bought a separate 3-9x40 scope so probably about the same amount in the end.

Which sounds more like what AoR will provide. Not in Washington. I'm in CC GA. I guess I'm looking for disadvantages of AoR. I generally don't trust insurance companies. They're businessmen who hide behind their lawyers. As much as I hate lawyers, and oooh I hate lawyers, I'm thinking dealing directly with such a beast might be more effective.

That is my personal carry Keltec 9 mm...for when a holster is too obvious. It's a good piece, very accurate inside 10 yards. But it is light so it snaps a bit so be ready for it. A good choice when I was younger. I still carry it, but prefer the S&W .380. A much softer shoot for a dude over 29, and very accurate.

I have one and it is the bomb. I am over 1,000 rounds with it both regular and suppressed and I have not had a single issue with any ammo. I have not run any steel cased ammo in it though.

It does run dirty with 147 grain ammo suppressed but most 9mm's do that when running a can.

A few things to think about. Richard Lee developed a repeatable measure using what he called VMD

"The Volume Measured Density (VMD) of a powder is the volume in cc's (cubic centimeter) that one grain of powder occupies."

You can usually find the average volume of a cartridge case from a particular manufacturer and combined with using VMD measurement of the powder, can estimate how full the case is which in turn affects pressure (excess or under).

Ideally, you determine the VMD of each can of powder that you use or you can use the less accurate VMD figures that Lee's Manual gives.

Second, if you are really into it, I would recommend Pet Loads from Ken Waters even if you do not reload. Waters explains his particular case head measurement technique that he used to develop wildcat loads among other uses but by measuring carefully before and after, he would be able to determine firing pressure far better than using the crude primer and case head viewing method.

Have a lot of free well done resources for the general public plus more for actual membership. Lot of heavy hitters in self defense and training on the board of it.

I always thought once you got your weapon zeroed, don't touch the knobs! But apparently if you have a scope that costs more than, say, $40, you can loosen your knobs and turn them so that the ZEROES are there on your settings, and when you calculate your solution, you adjust your knobs! And then you can easily go back to zero.

This seems so obvious now.

I used the Lee Carbide Factory Crimp die, but I'm thinking I need to adjust to a tighter crimp. Some of the rounds did indeed need a little encouragement to fit in the case gauge.

My test gun was a Tisas M1911A1 clone with 5-inch barrel, so pretty standard. I fired a few mags of Remington FMJ after the reloads, and they functioned without a hiccup.

My powder charge was a little less than halfway between min and max listed charge. I was a bit skeered to load it much hotter than that my first time, but I may increase the charge just a wee bit for the next batch.

Dunno, some people hate them for allegedly making ammo less accurate and some hate all things Lee Precision makes. Others shrug and use them. Go to any firearms board and put something favorable about it--some will say it is not needed so learn to adjust your dies dummy, some will say it is a gimmick like a sugar pill, others will say Team Green (RCBS) or Team Blue (Dillon) is better and if they did not make it, it is worthless. And so on.

I advise beginning reloaders to use them on 9mm in particular along with 40 S&W because taper crimping and bullet tension can be a bit wonky on 9mm reloading. Particularly if you are using unsorted brass. The 9 has a very gentle taper to the case to aid in feeding. On the 40 S&W, it is because it is a more powerful and bullet setback on it results in very bad things happening. Brass is more inconsistent with the 40 S&W and less margin to play with. 45 ACP on the other hand is a much less tiddly cartridge to reload.

Heading for back surgery probably . Neuropathy is not responding to cortisone shots at either location which means the neuropathy is likely coming from the cervical region. Either it is forminal stenosis which I had years ago from that same c6-c7 area or some kind of nerve entrapment.

The lack of good sleep is the worst part about it. Plus I cannot sit, stand, etc. for more than 10 minutes or so without moving.

136 Now, range report: After finding out my Norma brass loads are okay, I hit the range to do that which I'd been avoiding: setting the zero stop on the scope @100 yards for the new loads. Who knew a slightly lighter bullet traveling much faster with a better BC would tend to shoot quite a bit higher?

After setting the zero where it should have been, I started putting a few rounds down range. Bizarrely, shots seemed to be stringing vertically a bit. I checked my rear bag, I was using the Protektor rear bag..bottom was flat, I hadn't picked up any debris on it..put it down, and realized the bag was wobbling. I looked closely and it turned out the concrete top on the bench had a hump in it, right where I needed to set up for shooting. Le sigh.

I set up again, and put a round right through the center cross hairs at 100 yards. I dropped one shot low left by about .5" which was on me, settled down and stuck a shot right on top of of the first shot. Groovy. Zero stop set and I headed home.

Range Report: Brought the ailing Glock(G48 without gr dot) to the range. I got the stand that Eromero recommended and it does make theh gun remarkabley stable but did not help me with the slide lock. Hrothgar suggested trying 124 gr ammo. Did a test with both and surprisingly had only one jam early on and the gun shot great whether I used 115 or 124. I love my Glocks. Blaster did find the doohickey slide release tool and I just ordered one. From what the reviews say, it should cure my issue ofo hurt fingers for the grand total of $10.95.

Was talking about the Lee Factory Crimp Die (FCD) which some people love, some just use them, and some people hate them even if they never used them.

The FCD pretty much is pretty fool proof crimping device but it is designed more for reliable function in any firearm than specifically tailored toward a particular one.

163 The only thing I can add to Jerry's revolver video is to point the barrel at least slightly down. Cartridges should slide easily in and out of a properly sized and clean cylinder. That means they can start to slide out while closing the action if the barrel is raised.

174 (Institute of Military Technology, post 2 of 2). The four-hour tour became an all day event when Mr. Knight himself joined the tour. He talked a lot about acquiring the collection, stories about Eugene Stoner and his tribulations developing the AR-10 and AR-15, what it was like to work with him at Knights Armament, and how Eugene Stoner, just before he died, predicted that the AR-15 platform wouldn't last much longer after him (a very wrong prediction based on both military and commercial sales today). After going through the small arms collection, we took a look at the artillery and military truck collection before finishing with the tank/armored vehicle collection. The tank collection isn't the biggest, but it's still pretty impressive. Some space was leased out to McLaren Automotive, for storage and testing of new cars. So there were McLarens worth hundreds of thousands sitting next to an M4A1 Sherman from WWII - quite the contrast. If you can get in, this should not be missed if you have any interest US military small arms or development of the AR-10/AR-15.

Thanks. Prayers are always appreciated by my wife and I. I've had this happen before and had nerve relocation in my left arm (and hand surgery to remove trigger finger syndrome). Hoped it was a similar issue to my right but apparently not so.

Last time I had foraminal stenosis issues with C6 -7 was in 2018 or so.

Due to an insurance forced switch from Humira, the new biologic is simply not holding the psoriasic arthritis in check as flares and their severity have increased for the since I went off Humira in April.

That results in lots of new bone spur growth affecting nerves at times.

Copy. One shooter put a lot of 9mm on the 50 yd plate on Friday. It did not fall off. I did not inspect the plate for significant damage during a cold range pause. I didn't think of that issue. Will do that in the future.

Gosh, I'm sorry whig.

I have a patient who was switched off brand Humira as well. She suffered flares for SIX FREAKING MONTHS before her primary, her rheumatologist and her physiatrist were able to convince her insurance company to pay for her Humira. Once she got back on it, things calmed down considerably.

I've got a very nearly New In Box, Thompson-Center "Compass" rifle in that chambering. At 18", the barrel is a bit short for distance shooting. But it is a 5-R rifling profile, 1 in 8 twist, with a threaded muzzle, cap and is at present, sporting a Hog's Breath muzzle brake.

Scope is a Gen II Vortex Viper, PST, 5x25x50, 2nd FP.

Rings are Chinee Junk. Ought to be replaced.

It'll be included in the list of Things to be Sold. But you can write me for early details, if you wish.

If you are not getting the benefit of firing the Garand, it is a heavy rifle to tote. Rather tote a M-16 than a Garand. Would rather have the Garand in a foxhole than an M-16 as long as you had ammo for either.

The old black tip ap rounds for the Garand were also pretty effective in Europe to the point I think that most of the Garand ammo fired near the end of the WWII was AP instead of regular ball.

Don't want you to think that I am not having fun. The problem is pretty minor in the scheme of things. I can;t take the gun apart because the slide lock levers are very small and very rough so difficult to pull down. It seems that so many have problems with this that they make a little plastic tool that grips them and saves getting fingers cut or bruised that helps. I shoot the gun just fine and have no trouble racking the slide or clearing jams. Just taking it apart to clean. Luckily it's a Glock and not very tempermental.

This isn't strictly speaking a recommendation since I don't have one myself but a quick look at the PSA website shows AR kits with a complete upper for less than $400. Add an Anderson stripped lower bought locally, spend an enjoyable evening learning to put it together, and you're in for under 5.

Something useful and low profile (folds in half and fits in a gym bag are the Keltec Sub2000's in 9mm for about 400-500 new, a bit less used. Most of the new ones use Glock magazines which are plentiful.

Ruger and Smith&Wesson pistol cartridge carbines are fine as well for a bit more.

If the Winchester shotgun in 12 gauge is too much, think about a Mossberg/Remington/Winchester in 20 gauge. In practical terms at bad breath distance using buck shot, not much difference in stopping power.

Used about 300 or so. New less than 500.

Don't mind ugly but functional, Hi Point pistol cartride carbines can be had even in the mighty 10mm for under 500 dollars but other than the 9mm, no high capacity magazines. i think the 9mm version is about 300 or so new and they are reliable if a tad ugly.

What you are describing is more likely when you flare, seat the bullet, and then taper crimp the cartridge. Look for a problem with your seating die set and your taper crimp die first.

Sometimes OAL can be an issue in 9mm as chambers used to be an issue. Back in the P series heyday, earlier German made Sigs were relatively short chambered and long bullets seated at max OAL would simply jam the bullet into the short throat.

Depending on the rifle cartridge, a small base die set might be necessary for a semi (or full) auto rifle but for a handgun that would be rare.

Take your calipers and measure the fired round at the same point in the case as your unfired rounds from the same batch. It will give you some pointers. Likewise check using the calipers your unfired problematic batch cartridges at several points on the case with the specs in your reloading manual.

If you're not wanting to hunt anything from zombies to bears, you could go with a 10/22 from Ruger (or a clone). They're excellent weapons (by all accounts), in a cheap caliber (.22 LR), and you can fiddle (new triggers, a different stock, etc.).

If WA doesn't like black rifles, you might want to check if "BRN" setups fall under that designation. Brownell's (hence "BRN") has a take off the AR that might not be am "AR" under the definitions, maybe.

Otherwise, pick a caliber and do searches on Guns.com to see if anything falls within your range. Then pick another caliber when there aren't.

253 My test gun was a Tisas M1911A1 clone with 5-inch barrel, so pretty standard. I fired a few mags of Remington FMJ after the reloads, and they functioned without a hiccup.

My powder charge was a little less than halfway between min and max listed charge. I was a bit skeered to load it much hotter than that my first time, but I may increase the charge just a wee bit for the next batch.

1911s can be fussy if fed anything other than 230 FMJ. Check that the Overall Length OAL of the cartridge exactly matches the loading manual recommendation for your particular bullet.

That was a couple three years ago. But they're in the low $400s for the same gun, now.

It's a flat-top, so irons and optics will bump your spend, a bit.

261 FWIW, having a pistol cartridge carbine in a cartridge that you also have a handgun is a very old trick dating back to cowboy days.

My favorite pistol caliber cartridge is actually a lever gun firing 38 Special/357 Magnum. The former cartridge is just right for plinking and okay in self defense. The 357 Magnum in a pistol caliber cartridge becomes a very effective anti personnel cartridge on par with the M1 Carbine without all the noise and blast of the handgun in that cartridge.

275 Copy. One shooter put a lot of 9mm on the 50 yd plate on Friday. It did not fall off. I did not inspect the plate for significant damage during a cold range pause. I didn't think of that issue. Will do that in the future.

Okay, that narrows it down. 45 ACP is a pretty good cartridge to reload. Check for your flaring die set as if you are adding a bit too little flare before trying to seat the bullet, the bullet can buckle the case slightly and you can usually feel or see it.

Flaring too much can sometimes then result in over crimping introducing similar problems.

Occasionally, it can be a problem batch of out of spec bullets but that is rare and easily found out.

If I have not reloaded a handgun cartridge in awhile, I always create a dummy reference cartridge for die setting for that bullet and to make sure that my dies are set all right before loading real ammo.

Aluminum cases are great for dummy ammo and paint them,etc to distinguish them from your real ammo.

ARs are a good self defense weapon but can be an issue if you are in urban areas and have to fire at indoor ranges.

Not all of them allow rifles other than something like the 22 LR. Some don't allow shotguns. And an AR on an indoor range can be a bit unpleasant to fire due to blast and noise issues.

ARs have a slight training ramp up as well. I use a n AR for home defense simply because I cannot wield a pump action shottie very well anymore due to joint degeneration and arthritis.

But I learned to use the AR via Uncle Sam or I would simply use Uncle Ivan's SKS. I can shoot either of them or even a Garand but each has a different manual of arms and fiddle fumbling in the dark is not when I want to recall controls on a firearm. So the AR it twas to replace my beloved shotties. Also easier for the wife to use.

As far as self defense, if they are carrying a rifle or shotgun and obviously threatening to shoot you, that is a factor allowing perhaps a longer shot ceterus paribus.

An AR or a PCC is likely suitably lethal (with proper ammo not range ammo) with the AR having a bit more range and a bit less overpenetration with the right ammo. But indoors, you do get a lot of blast and noise from it which you do not with a PCC.

So Jim's offered AR above is an excellent price and you know the pedigree and provenance of it.

Huge fan of the EP-9 pistol. I love it, most smiles per dollar of all the guns in the laager. It is super light, has hardly any recoil. And really accurate out to 25 yards and you can shoot it our farther.

I am not sold on the idea of the EP9 as a carbine. That review of it as a carbine comports with my experience with it as a pistol. BUT - for me if I was going to a carbine length its going to be an AR in 556.

I think I have to agree w/ Blaster here. If you're going to accept the penalties of a 16" barrel, 5.56mm is a better caliber choice than 9mm. 9mm will develop its max velocity out of a 9-10" barrel. 16" actually detracts from muzzle velocity in 9mm due to the additional friction incurred by the additional barrel length.

It should work but gun reviews aside from Gun Tests magazine (which did not accept ads dunno about now) are pretty subjective. So it is kind of like us reviewing a movie review of a movie that we have not seen ourself.

There are always questions like warranty, spare parts availability, customer service by the maker, magazine availability and cost, etc. etc. then there is the subjective one of does this weapon fit my body and can I operate it easily. That requires handling and firing one.

In the context of a plinker or fun gun at the range, yes. But as a home defense gun? I'm not 100% convinced. If you take a 16" barrel for your carbine, 5.56mm might be a better choice over 9mm. See my post (#317) for more.

Not fond of the blast but there are ways to deal with that.

Using the right ammo though, you can have less risk of overpenetration than you will get using a pistol or pcc if the hollowpoint in either of those gets plugged by drywall, etc.

Key is to use 55 gr boat tail bullets and keep your ammo speed above 3000 fps which creates a keyhole effect that works in soft tissue. Alternatively, you can use thin skinned varmint rounds but risk underpenetration with those.

223/5.56 is pretty versatile on ammo design.

I don't know how all of that fits into the canuck part of your nic - AR15s may not be really available to you - if that is not an option, but the Extar is, then I would definitely consider the EP9 Carbine.

If you're talking bad breath ranges, the other guy won't be able to tell the difference in velocity. If you're trying to hit something at 100 yards, it might be a problem. But how many self-defense engagements take place at 100 yards?

This is more of a food thread item, but in the same vein of sharing knowledge, because I only learned of this a couple of years ago after my brother told me.

Look at your aluminum foil or cling wrap, it's a roll inside of a box. On each end of that box is a little D-shaped perforation. Push those inward. The little tabs go inside the cardboard tube and holds it in the box when you pull a piece of foil/wrap out, so that the whole roll doesn't want to pop out of the box.
