Saturday Night Movie Thread [moviegique]: The Bad and the Beautiful (Megalopolis, Joker 2 & more)

Just as I sometimes will avoid a movie that's too over-hyped, knowing that most movies can't live up to the buzz, I occasionally will see movies that everyone is dumping on, especially if there's some conflicting or interesting angle to the criticisms.

For Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis I saw one review that said only "Free popcorn refills" and another claiming that Coppola had reached Neil Breen levels. But our very own Eris said she kinda loved it, and I knew, at a minimum, Coppola would lard the movie up with cinematic references, which appeal to humble fans of cinema such as yours truly.

I then compounded my woes by going to see Joker 2—I'm not typing out that French crap—and what I can honestly say about both films that Pitch Meeting covered both very accurately. In-between, I saw the restoration of 2006's The Fall, which is a beautiful masterpiece and it got me to thinking about how the other two films failed on fundamentals without being beautiful enough to make their flaws overlookable.

1.jpg

Megalopolis

For fifty  years, until the release of Star Wars in 1977, Metropolis was the science-fiction movie, and is still one of the great cinematic achievements. Even today, it impresses, and it's quite easy to forget that its underlying message, spelled out in a literal epitaph is:

The mediator between the HAND and the BRAIN must be the HEART.”

In this case, the HAND is Communism and the BRAIN is Fascism. It's 1927 Germany, what else could they say? Nonetheless, the ham-handed messaging practically destroys this classic.

So while it is not surprising that Coppola would take that film as the germ for what would be his magnum opus, it's somewhat surprising that he would say "Only my movie is going to have EVEN MORE painfully inappropriate or inapt epitaphs."

3.jpgA giant statue of Justice literally swoons in the streets of New York. Er, New Rome. Whatever.

This is not his magnum opus, mind you. But it was to have been. And as I watched, I could see glimpses of his original fever-dream, a vision of a three-day cinematic experience which chronicles the rise and fall and rise of Cesar Catalina, the architect of Megalopolis, a—well, a borough in New York, apparently.

It could've been great: Cesar would rise from the streets to power through his sheer ability culminating in evicting all the people who already lived in the place where Megalopolis was. That'd be the first movie. The second would be his struggles in getting Megalopolis built, securing financing and running afoul of city politics threatening to end his dream. The last movie would have him thwarting his enemies and achieving dream: An advanced city of...moving sidewalks. (Coppola did the writing by himself, with an assist from son Roman, and that was a mistake.)

But the first half of this movie has tremendous charm. Like the best of bad movies, it surprises you with novel ways of being bad. Cesar (Adam Driver) can stop time! This is a metaphor for creative ability, and the only bearing it has on anything is that his love interest (Nathalie Emmanuel) can see him do this.

The rules for this time-stopping are very vague, to boot.

Not weird enough? Well, Cesar carries a bunch of roses to his apartment and when he walks in, they fly off on their own.

2.jpgA light-saber for nerds.

There's enough in the first third or so to keep things interesting. But then we start getting into plot, which we really didn't need and which drags the movie down.

The mixing of Shakespearean dialogue (Cesar actually does most of "To Be Or Not To Be" speech at one point) and modern vulgar slang works very poorly and most actors are not up to it. Driver actually does. It's hard not to respect him for pulling off reciting what is essentially gibberish. (The other one who manages is Aubrey Plaza, who chews the scenery and spits out the nails as Cesar's jilted lover, and the seductress of Shia LeBeouf, in a particularly porny scene.)

Fundamentally, though, the premise is based on the ultimate left-wing conceit: That a perfect environment will make perfect people. The wretched refuse that Cesar has rendered homeless are, one presumes, going to occupy Megalopolis even as, moments earlier, they threatened to burn it down.

But it's not a bad looking film. There are moments that are quite nice, visually.

It was better in Coppola's head for sure.

Joker: Folie à Deux

By comparison with MegalopolisJoker 2 is much more successful at what it's trying to do, and also much harder to watch. The conceit of having Arthur (Joquin Phoenix) hallucinate that he's in a musical no one can see, except for Lee (Lady Gaga), who joins in it with him, is actually a clever way to avoid having to do lots of wordy emotional scenes between two crazy people. The choice of upbeat music, particularly themed around showtunes, is also a clever way to get the idea across.

And the idea is, Arthur, who's not The Joker, has a cult following that is dedicated to The Joker. Lee's attraction to him is based on him being The Joker. The world is more-or-less at his feet, if only he'll be The Joker. So our little sad sack of an anti-hero-but-also-not-really-a-hero is given the choice of being even crazier or trying to just, y'know, be himself (which is crazy enough).

This movie has a lot of the original movie's sense of style, evoking pseudo-1981, and the same miserable premise is here: watching a man struggle with his sanity in a cruel and brutal world.

This really doesn't work as entertainment. There are many, many elements of the original that deflect from the misery porn: We sort of root for Arthur. Until we're shown exactly how crazy and dangerous he is, we can kind of believe he's turning his life around. He's moving around the city, doing things. He's trying to achieve his dreams and handling his failures by hallucinating. It's something, at least.

4.jpgI don't remember this scene from the movie. Maybe I blacked out, though.

Here, he goes back-and-forth between an asylum and a court room.

In a traditional musical, the song-and-dance numbers stop the action. This is also true of Joker 2, except that there was no action to stop. And the musical numbers are uncomfortable to interpret, much like if the "Singin' in the Rain" scene in Clockwork Orange was the entire movie.

I realized early on, the only way to get through the movie was going to be to really pay attention to those musical numbers. That's where the "action" was, the evolution of the relationship between Lee and Arthur was, as well as his struggle with his identity. So I wasn't bored, though I wasn't exactly enchanted, either.

The Boy hated it pretty hard. He doesn't know the songs, and found that the whole identity struggle was neutered by the fact that the movie makes it very clear early on: Arthur is not Joker. He's not wrong about this. It's almost as if the creators were afraid to give Arthur an opportunity to at least toy with being wildly evil.

I would recommend this film to even fewer people than the original. If the two films together average half-a-billion, that's still way too much.

The Fall (2006)

I have a full review up this film up from 2006, one of the first I wrote during the blogging era, and the Boy and I trundled down to catch it, thinking it was a one-night deal. (It actually got a little wider release, I guess because it's a 4K restoration.)

It's a masterpiece. Visually stunning, and using a child's perspective as creative license, the story is both whimsical and grimly serious. I had a stye when I saw it, and had forgotten it was a tearjerker. Then my eye started stinging like crazy. Besides the beauty of this film, it handles tone shifts expertly. The little girl is a little girl and prone to silly things, and the story he tells her is very silly.

5.jpg

She also makes childish mistakes in trying to help him kill himself. She doesn't know quite what he's doing, but she knows something is off. And the switch from the whimsical to the grave is heart-wrenching.

But it's a joyful movie overall, and well worth watching. Director Tarsem (Singh) will probably never make anything like this ever again—probably no one will. But that's okay, this is a genuine magnum opus that knows exactly what it's doing, and does it excellently.

Also Screened:

There were an assortment of movies, both bad and beautiful—actually, they were all pretty good, which isn't a huge surprise given they were all-but-two reissues of films we liked. I may review one of these for next time.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space (198: A standard invaders-from-space story is enlivened by making the aliens literal clowns. There's an oh-so-brief suggestion that human clowns were inspired by these invaders in the past, but just enough to allow our characters to take the adventure seriously. A limited budget meant that a couple of truly great effects were left on the cutting room floor, but for '80s horror-comedy, this still shines and is very watchable and entertaining. The Chiodo brothers have been threatening a sequel for decades, and IMDB says they're in production, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Lisa Frankenstein (2024): Among the many spectacular flops of 2024, Lisa Frankenstein goes overlooked. It made less than $10M on a $13M budget, so it can't compare with either Megalopolis (less than $10M on a $120M budget) or Joker 2 (less than $60M on an alleged $200M budget), and it's also much easier to watch as a film. It's got a sort of Edward Scissorhands/Heathers feel and even takes place in 1989. The tonal shifts can make things feel uneven and I'm not sure if the ending made sense, exactly, but it already has a cult following, which is why I took the Barbarienne to see it. (I was the only XY chromosome in the place.) Written by Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams, the daughter of Robin.

Ringu (199: This horror classic is weathering a bit like the old Universal classics. It's kind of slow-moving and low-key, and suffering from its own considerable influence on the genre. It's still good and enjoyable, but the "wow" factor isn't there anymore.

Smile 2: The original Smile is far from a great movie—Jump Scare: The Movie, I think I called it—but it won both the Boy and I over for a couple of reasons. First, the people making it cared. This is someone's baby, and none of it is phoned in. Second, while the beats are mostly pretty predictable, it commits and gives us a Smile monster, so we don't have to go into the whole "well, was there REALLY a monster?" and "Maybe the real monster is the friends we made along the way!" We both had dim hopes the sequel would be able to sustain this but, by-and-large, it works well, maybe even a little better than the original. The Boy did not care for the end, which is telegraphed way early on, but is not really possible with this genre of horror. (I mentioned in my review of the first, that this is my least favorite genre of horror, and I can't say why without spoiling it. Same here.)

The Masque of the Red Death (1964): Part of Roger Corman's "Poe Cycle," pretty much the best movies he made (along with "The Intruder"), and at the height of his directorial powers. Vincent Price is a decadent Italian baron who torments his peasants and brings a pretty young girl in to seduce while he tortures her father and boyfriend. Orgies abound, and the dreaded Red Death sweeps the countryside. Price actually is an avowed Satanist here, convinced that The Devil has killed God and will spare him from the Red Death if he sacrifices enough people to it. Slow by modern standards, with beautiful costumes and sets, and "exteriors" that are (wonderfully) painted soundstages, it was refreshing and held up well.

Terrifier 3: With a $2M budget and looking to pass Joker 2 at the domestic box office with over $50M in ticket sales, this movie is an even unlikelier success than Joker. I've waxed enthusiastic about Terrifier 2, though I am no gore-hound, because I think it really transcends its own genre. Terrifier 3 is not, to my mind, as good, but it's still quite good. It feels more realistically brutal, which makes it harder to watch, but the main focus of the film is showing the aftermath of the previous series of events, which turned Lauren LaVera into a basket case. Certainly worth seeing, and maybe re-seeing, because there are a lot of interesting details. If you can stomach the gore, it's a good film.

"Metropolis" is also a reflection of the traditional German attitude toward politics in the 1920s. Simply put, not a fan. There's a long-running trope among German intellectuals and statesmen that partisan politics is inherently foreign to the spirit of the country, that the German Volk is meant to be an organic whole, and the talk of a "mediator" directly reflected this. The mediator was to be a quasi-spiritual figure who would transcend such divisions and fuse the different components into a united community once more.

This is also exactly why the Nazis loved it, because they saw it as an endorsement of non-partisan, charismatic leadership. Aka, Hitler.

13 I've been posting on other threads that I was really wrong about my assumption of Furiosa. Watched it for free on On Demand. I really didn't like Fury Road because I personally saw it as a boring girl power movie. I thought Furiosa would be more of the same only worse.

I actually found it not to be girl power at all and really enjoyed it. The only thing that bothered me was knowing she grew up to make a girl power movie😀.

26 Really liked Terrifier 3 (probably mentioned that in a previous movie thread). The second one was better for me because it really set up the supernatural element that was teased at the end of #1. For whatever reason I like even slasher horror to have some supernatural bent. Probably plays better in my head than pure evil people doing evil things.

Number 3 had some very creative gore that added interest beyond the very shocking scenes in 1 and 2. Hoping they go on to explore the deeper premise introduced in this last one.

I'm with EVS on that: I don't see that interpretation as plausible. The idea that Brendan Gleeson and his fat Irish cop buddies were going to ass-rape Arthur is a little outlandish.

That said, the way the movie cuts off, it leaves it open to interpretation, which is dumb.

40 I think "Apocalypse Now" was a kind of dividing point for Coppola. It has a story and visuals. Whereas before he had story, after, he had visuals. "One from the Heart" was a stupid story with fantastic visuals. His S.E. Hinton films were the same. Haven't seen much since (I did see Dracula, which was all about How It Was Made and that's all) but I get the impression he does visuals and that's it.

I edited for brevity (no really) and took out my whole theory that the very, very liberal Coppola does best when he's working with a very, very militant writer, like John Milius.

It's not that "Apocalypse Now" isn't a masterpiece, but very definitely that Coppola could not have done it without Milius.

59 45 I thought Terrifier was pure slasher and torture porn. Is it better than that?
---

It's definitely slasher material, and very gore heavy. Is it torture porn? My definition of torture porn is when you're supposed to enjoy the suffering of the victims.

"Saw", for example, I don't regard as torture porn, because you're really on the side of the victims. You're relating to their difficult choices.

Same with "Terrifier". The kills are usually pretty quick, and the worst gore often comes after.

Terrifier 1: Not great, but with hints of what was to come.

Terrifier 2: Genuinely transcendent. Takes the concept to the limit.

Terrifier 3: More workaday, but still very gripping.

If you watch just one, make it #2. You don't really need the others.

Revisited some of Serling's Night Gallery, which holds up better than I imagined it could as long as I skipped the mostly-Jack Laird-'humorous' segments. Episodes like 'The Caterpillar' still have it. Nice stuff.

An early John Carpenter made for tv flick called 'Someone's Watching Me' has popped up on the Criterion channel and one of the Amazon prime live TV channels. Doesn't have the punch of 'Halloween' of course, but it's worth a watch.

Well, I used think it was kinda cheap, but like anything, if you watch enough of it, you begin to see the difference between just splashing blood around to try to lure people into the theater, and a scene, as in Terrifier 2, where a body is pounding to near death and the lungs are still going. (The director was under the bed working the bellows.)

I still tend to gravitate away from it, but Terrifier 2 is an exception.

Well, when a director spends an entire film degrading his protagonist and in the end killing his protagonist, and relegating him to just a discarded nobody, that's the only interpretation one can draw from those scenes.

As I said, Todd Phillips should never work again, but sadly, if Rian Johnson is still employable, Phillips will probably find future work as well.

Charles Laughton. Like him in everything I've seen him in.

A question: there is a stock line "the book was better". And it's usually true. What about the opposite?

I think this would be a good question for a future movie post. I'll give one, which I don't think will get much debate. The Lady Vanishes. Absolutely everything really good came from Hitchcock, or the cast. The book is different, and dull.

But my other suggestion would horrify many: The Thin Man. The book is good; but Nick and Nora on the page are nowhere near so much fun as Powell and Loy made them.

Note that both movies are notable for exceptional chemistry between the stars.

plus, it let me check on something i noticed in the final scene of the last showing during its first run that made me thing "did i imagine that? was that there the whole time? who *is* noriko?"

a) no, i didn't imagine it
b) no, it wasn't there the whole time
c) i suspect they put it in just to elicit that response from viewers who noticed it.

158 Saw an odd movie on Prime, titled-

"The Linguini incident"

It's a romcom starring David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette.

I think they were trying to make an updated (for the 80-90s) version of a 1930s screwball romance.

Pretty much a total failure. Everyone talks in faux clever talk. Miscasting abounds.

It peaked my curiosity so I watched it. But you don't need to. Avoid

161 Ach, Werner attempted to make a graceful exit, but he enjoys too much the Movie Thread. The analysis of Coppola seems spot-on - his vision and its execution in Megalopolis call to mind Apocalypse Now, where there was a similar fracture. (Actually, since Star Wars was mentioned, you could say that Lucas had a problem of the same nature in the prequels, which required more than three films to make the transformation of Anakin to Vader work in the best narrative sense.) Werner, being a Kraut, also liked the call-back to the Weimar period and German Expressionism -as you put it, what else could they say in 1927 Deutschland? Really, nothing, except we're in this fever dream of post-Versailles Mittel Europa, and we're about to make horrible decisions and do some monstrous, unforgivable deeds. If Werner may, one further post after this.

163 Think I'd probably put Michael Caine on the list too.

One Hackman that doesn't get a lot of mention is 'I Never Sang for My Father.' For my money, forget Miller's Salesman -- the film of Robert Anderson's play, with Hackman and Melvyn Douglas both dynamite in there, is the great American tragedy.

167 Masque of the Red Death has always hit me as the best/ie most serious of the Corman films. I won’t say it’s the one I like the most, because that would be “the Raven” which ends with a hilarious slapstick wizardry scene between Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Peter Lorre. (Price and Karloff are winking and nodding at each other, Lorre is obviously drunk off his ass)

Actually probably my favorite Roger Corman film is “The Big Birdcage” , where a young and very fit Pam Grier shows us that the first thing that happens in a fight in a women’s prison is that all the very fit young women prisoners tear their blouses off.

169 I see the Terrifier clown in all sorts of memes and such so it must be a very popular series even though I have no interest in that sort of movie.

Joker 1 hinted at how Joker 2 should have gone - the media turning a literal madman into some anti-capitalist hero and destroying their city for it (why hello Saint Floyd!) but I guess they didn't have the guts.

175 A question: there is a stock line "the book was better". And it's usually true. What about the opposite?

I think this would be a good question for a future movie post.
---

It was also a good question for a past post. I can't find it here at the HQ but it's on my blog:

https://moviegique.com/2020/08/the-book-wasnt-better/

---
I'll give one, which I don't think will get much debate. The Lady Vanishes. Absolutely everything really good came from Hitchcock, or the cast. The book is different, and dull.
---
Wow, I think TLV is one of the greatest thrillers I've ever read!

---
But my other suggestion would horrify many: The Thin Man. The book is good; but Nick and Nora on the page are nowhere near so much fun as Powell and Loy made them.
---
Would it horrify people? Don't most people know Nick & Nora from the movies?

The Big Sleep novel is far superior to The Big Sleep (1946). Movie does not work at all because they could never put what's in the book in that movie. And it's not because of the subject matter, the character motivations in the movie are simply idiotic.

The 1978 film is more faithful to the novel.

For those of you that liked the 'Terrifier' series, you have to check out..

"The Inside" - 2007 - France...free on Tubi or Roku. Wow! Terrifier prepared me for this movie. A pretty good story with a woman scheduled to deliver her baby the next day and another woman with scissors. Non stop brutality. Great film 10 out of 10. Can't wait to watch again.

"Ichi the Killer" - 2001 Japan...free on Tubi or Roku. My first crime horror movie. It was based on a manga and was different than anything I've ever seen. Beautifully filmed. Bloodier than the other Japanese horror movies I've seen. 10 out of 10....which basically means I can't wait to watch it again.

Excision - 2012 - US .....free....3 out of 10 only because tneir were people I recognized in one way or another..otherwise 1 out of 10.. Ariel Winter was the only likable character. Traci Lords played Mom. Malcolm McDowell, Marlee Matlin and the name Ray Wise is familiar.

Nice idea. Horribly executed and the shocking surgical scene would be beat by scenes in MASH.

A year or so ago I picked up a collection of Vincent Price Corman films, and yeah, this was a highlight.

I’ll second The Raven as well, a very fun movie, possibly the first D&D movie well before there was a D&D.

I just finished watching a movie I never intended to watch. But I a collection of Stephen King movies very cheap in order to watch Christopher Walken in The Dead Zone (which was good) and it included Pet Sematary. I read the book and it was too well written given the subject matter to ever want to read again, let alone see a movie version. I was right. The movie is almost as good as the book, and I never want to see it again.

And this is not a sideways insult to the other actors to say that the kid was the best actor in the movie. (Fred Gwynne was second.)

236 The Andromeda Strain -- Robert Wise's movie seemed to me better than the book (and if memory serves, screenwriter Nelson Gidding added a bit, not in the book, at the finish that mentioned using cloud seeding to wash the remaining airborne virus into the ocean where the ph level of sea water would kill it off).

238 Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!!!

I just looked at the Wiki for "The Fall" (spoilers!) and it seems that it has just recently been released on Mubi, a international streaming service.

So I go to their web page and they are showing clips of it in the background of their homepage.

All Hail Eris, I think you would like this movie.

239 The second Joker film made Wener feel as if he were ein Hund and the entire production was whacking him repeatedly over his muzzle while screaming "Bad audience! You didn't like the first movie in the manner which our Woke viewers did, so now you're going to be forced to endure Lady Gaga and musical numbers while we strip away everything that made the first film original and creative. Also, we're taking you to the Vet and having a little bit of snipping done!"

Nein, says Werner, not the Vet! That you would remove Werner's naughty bits over his reaction to a film is....ohhh, wait, Werner forgot that this was a simile.

On a brighter note, interesting reaction to Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Always have I felt that fear of clowns is more of a cultural affectation than a legitimate phobia. Werner finds clowns unfunny for the most part, and this, he thinks, breeds a contempt for them which some misidentify as fear. After all, there seems to be no wide-spread fear of mimes, even though they share many of the performative traits of the clown. Future review suggestion - Hickey and Boggs. An overlooked early 70s film directed by Robert (!) Culp.

240 Evening.

Only Tarsem Singh movie I ever saw was The Cell. The reason it's the only one I ever saw is because none of his others came to my town. I feel I should correct this.

Ringu is okay. I prefer Gore Verbinski's The Ring. I feel that for what is basically a teen horror movie it's got way more depth than it should have. It's highly rewatchable. In fact I rewatched it on Thursday.

243 People recommended 'Audition' - 1999 - Japan. Free. Thank you. It was on several lists I have collected.

10 out of 10. Beautifully written and filmed. I really enjoyed the father - son relationship and the friendship between the 2 guys. It was a nice drama for 75 minutes, turned a bit weird in a dream like state and then thongs got real.

'Vile' - 2011 - US. 8 out of 10. There were a lot of plotholes and I'm not that sophisticated. People are brought into a house and are 'forced' to torture each other. Nice torture pron bit not horribly graphic. I'll watch it again because in the lens of Covid, you can see how scared people do inhumane things.

'The Green Inferno' - 2015...free...10 out of 10. Activists in the Amazon meet cannibals. Very beautifully filmed, nice story, hot lead actress, pretty brutal scenes. Nice movie.

'Hard Candy' - 2005 - US - a middle aged photographer meets a 14 year old girl he met online, played by Ellen Page. Most of the movie is just those two together. Very well acted. A bit unrealistic since her character is 14 and is very skilled. But I'll watch it again. 10 put of 10.

----

This was attempted several times during that period, always disastrously. I think the biggest budget failure in that regard was Ivan Reitman's "Legal Eagles" with Robert Redford, Debra Winger, Daryl Hannah and of course, Brian Dennehy.

It made $49M domestically on a $40M budget, which was huge at the time.

For comparison, that puts it in the same ballpark as famous flops: The Golden Child (Eddie Murphy's first stinkburger) and Cobra (which knocked Stallone out of the saddle)

A good point - Art is especially horrifying. There does remain, however, the fact that most mimes are French, and there is an inherent impossibility to be terrified by the French. At least, not since Napoleon, and if we are being fair, he was culturally French, but ethnically Italian, so maybe that doesn't count,

313 Hmm is anyone else having problems with the pictures on this blog loading?
I'm trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it's
