A brilliant spy spoof, Fen, a product of its times. The opening sequence was derived from U.N.C.L.E., and at different times they spoofed Mission: Impossible, I Spy, and The Maltese Falcon. It worked because it set up its own loony little world where the villains were as scatterbrained as the heroes, and then played within that.

Henry was a comedian, but also a writer who was still working in H'wood into the '90s. He adapted the dark satire To Die For from the novel, and it became a hit for Nicole Kidman.

I always wanted to see Don Adams play something straight, like a role as a cop or a (serious) hotel detective. He did play a comic hotel detective, another dimwitted sort I think, on the old Bill Dana Show. Interesting bit of trivia: Bill Dana's brother, Irving Szathmary, wrote the Get Smart theme.

Zoneinfo is Linux/UNIX, Macs and related. Windows rolls its own. Windows is still a complex mess.

I've played around with the timezone functions in the Win32 API. My head hurts still thinking about it. It's not that bad if you just are going to stick around in one time zone. If you want something that can move around, and you want your program to be aware of that, it gets more complicated.

I seem to recall reading the blackwater fever part in an interview with him at that time. He'd had some tough life experiences and, I'll bet, could have played a straight role without too much trouble. But once he was known for the Smart role it was hard for people to see him any other way.

He owned part of the show, I believe, so he did well financially.

Is it right that the Trump campaign *bought* the truck outright? I thought they made an arrangement to borrow a truck and put their logo on it. But it looked too new and clean to have been a working unit.

IIRC, the FAT filesystem (all variants, but I don't know about exFAT) store timestamps in local time, not UTC.

This makes for some strange effects during a standard time transition.

Other than that, pretty much everything runs the clock on UTC. Local time is only *displayed* based on the timezone offsets. That's the only way to fly.

Sunday morning an hour before the change there will be two different 1 - 2 AM times.

For example, there will be a 1:30AM EDT, then a 1:30AM EST, for 25 hours total.

There is no easy way to record that if you're only using local time. You have to explicitly note the EDT or EST. Any timestamp without such a field or way to note that will mess up.

They actually tried year-round DST during Nixon (response to the energy crisis) in the early '70s. Most people don't know about that.

A majority was in favor. Then came winter, around the solstice during the shortest days. In some of the extreme western edges of time zones (Michigan upper peninsula is the worst, Michigan should be on central time anyway), sunrise didn't happen until after 9AM.

That ended that. They're pushing to do it again, and I imagine the same thing will happen if they do pass it.

169 @126/banana Dream: "I f'ing hate daylight savings time now. So much."

I used to work in IT and dealt with timezone updates and DST crossover moments twice a year. Lots of hardware and software does not handle this gracefully and needs manual intervention.

Don't even get me started about all the pain that's caused each time Congress decides to mess with the start and end dates for DST. There's so many embedded systems out there that have those thresholds encoded in their software (not in settings) and you have to adjust them manually on the date they thought they needed to change, as well as the date they actually need to now make the change, which means FOUR times per year (two in autumn, two in spring) that you need to visit these devices.

Imagine there being hundreds or even thousands of these in your facility.

And if they use Java based software at all, you need to use the TZUpdater utility from Oracle (formerly Sun) and that was fine and a free tool + updates, until Oracle decided to lock that utility behind a support contract. Burn Oracle, burn.

I hate DST with the heat of a thousand suns. This self-inflicted pain needs to stop once and for all.

188 I do hate resetting all the clocks in the house that are not "smart" and do it themselves. There's a wall clock in my office, the den, the covered porch and kitchen that all need to be manually changed. Same goes for the microwave, stove and an old Bose CD player in the living room. Plus two clocks in the garage/shop, the cordless phone and my digital camera (which I almost always forget.)

I quit wearing watches upon retirement so the dozen of those just sit in a box... forgotten.

189 I vote for Standard Time or what I term Absolute Time - what it really is according to our original definition which was based on the Sun's position? However GMT was defined.

190 >> what it really is according to our original definition which was based on the Sun's position? However GMT was defined.

In a nutshell, that's *mean* solar time, defined as the hour angle (+12, since we start the day at midnight) of the mean sun relative to the prime meridian.

That was Greenwich mean time. The mean is not the "true" (apparent) sun, but an average which smooths out the non-uniform motion of the sun along the ecliptic.

Currently, the closest thing to the old GMT is known as UT1. That would suit me rather than UTC, but that is long, complex story.

191 30-minute time shift? Ugh! That *would* be annoying. Maybe even more so than the full hour!

It's hard enough coordinating work calls between EST, CST, MST, and Canberra. Adelaide just throws a monkey wrench into everything by being 30 minutes off of normal.

"Can you do that at 8:30?"

"NO".

A lot of the "atomic clocks" that use the Ft. Collins signal have a bug about this. There are two bits in the signal, one is "DST change pending" the other is "DST change complete". Or something close to that.

Many devices will switch over immediately when just the pending bit changes, and not do the proper 2AM local time thing.

My Casio watch has that bug.

202 >> I would make time dependent on when noon was. Every latitude-longitude grid square would be its own time sone.

That's exactly the way it used to be in the Before Time. Before rapid travel and communication. Time was an entirely a local thing. One set one's clock to noon when the sun was directly overhead.

You couldn't travel or communicate fast enough for it to make any difference.

203 Considering how frequently the "run Red" argument is employed (if your town/county/state voted Rong this time, just put on your trailer wheels and move to be with your own kind), I'm surprised that those unhappy with the relative position of the sun are not encouraged to just get out of town. The time must be right for you somewhere.
