THE MORNING RANT: Ford to Suspend Production of its Slow-Selling F150 Conflagration Lightning Electric Pickup Truck

Ford Logo.jpg

The rolling (and occasionally exploding) catastrophe of Ford Motor Company’s regrettable decision to bet big on electric vehicles keeps getting worse. While headlines like those below about Ford suspending production of its awful electric pickup truck give me some schadenfreude, I don’t wish for Ford to fail. I actually wish for the company to be liberated from its enviro-globalist destructor, Jim Farley (CEO), and to re-focus on once again making great American, gas-powered vehicles.

Although Bloomberg is behind a paywall, the simple beauty of the headline at this link brings me a smile: “Ford to Halt F-150 Lightning Production as EV Demand Wanes” [Bloomberg – 10/31/2024]

Here is a CNBC story that is not behind a paywall:

“Ford to halt production of electric F-150 Lightning next month until January” [CNBC – 10/31/2024]

Ford Motor plans to halt production of its all-electric F-150 Lightning from mid-November until early next year to address bloated inventories and narrow losses on the pickup trucks.

“We continue to adjust production for an optimal mix of sales growth and profitability,” Ford said in an emailed statement.

I know exactly how Ford can align production of its E-dsel pickup truck with consumer demand in a way to maximize profitability. Real simple – it just needs to adjust production of the F150 Conflagration Lightning down to zero units, stopping the hemorrhaging, and eliminating the need for costly incentives to get dealers and consumers to take delivery of the unwanted e-pickup.

Ford on Monday said its Model-e EV operations are expected to lose about $5 billion this year.

The production slowdown represents a fall from grace for the F-150 Lightning. Ford executives such as CEO Jim Farley once touted the vehicle as having the same importance as the Model T, but the company has moved to slashing planned output of the pickup in half to begin this year.

Ford’s EV losses are not sustainable. I’ll have plenty more to say about its e-problems, but I did want to get a quick post up about this breaking news, which is another important milestone in the denouement of the corporate EV social contagion.

Ford F-150s, the non-EV kind.

How does Ford manage to botch one of the most popular vehicles so dang badly?!

10 They say production is "temporarily suspended". There's a site of an old Luby's Cafeteria near me; the large sign on the property read "temporarily closed" for a year or two after the building had been torn down and turned into a dirt lot. A big wind in the night finally took the sign away.

I'd think that the new jobs report, 12,000, that is TWELVE THOUSAND, against an estimate of 100,000 new jobs in the month, would be damning news for Harris.

Let's see if Trump and Vance and every R rep and senator running can trumpet this out loud enough to get through the suffocating pillow the media will use to spike it.

That figure is less than four new jobs PER COUNTY all across the U.S.

They aren't alone. Car companies worldwide have more or less split into three groups in terms of where they've been investing and what they've been targeting over the past decade:
1. EVs as such
2. Red China, which a big dose of EV for China-local reasons
3. Diversified product lines with emphasis in gas/diesel or hybrid, EV adjunct

Ford and VAG are in group one. GM is in group 2. Toyota and to a lesser degree Hyundai/Kia is in group 3.

Group 3 is the winner. A lot of people who were making fun of Toyota 5-10 years ago are starting to be pretty quiet. Toyota is going to win this round of auto industry realignment.

Jeep laid off all through the holidays going back to the Kaiser days, and it made great copy for those Silent Night/Six O'Clock News commentaries the stuck-out-lower-lip editorialists used to love. From what I hear from folks I know who still live there, the operation is huge and gets way bigger when you consider off-premise parking.

Apparently, the car thief rings are proper, big enterprises now. These aren't kids boosting cars anymore. They bring in car haulers and just steal them en masse from multiple lots. Inside men at the gate to wave the haulers through, teams to hit multiple cars quickly, etc.

Don't know if it's true - I thankfully don't live there anymore - but it's what I hear.

Oh but they are. Ford is almost deliberately setting piles of money on fire at this point. What better way to angle for a yuge taxpayer bailout? That is where this is all heading. I'm surprised Kumswala hasn't already announced a big bailout for Detroit.

I went to a showing for a new HPEV yesterday. You might be shocked to learn not one word was said about gas efficiency or emissions or anything even remotely green. It was more about how all this tech will get you more girls. Well, not really. But I'm not joking about not a single word being said about green bullshit.

36 I'd like someone who knows corporate book keeping to analyze Ford's multi-billion dollar boondoggles in EV battery production plants in KY and TN. And how those massive failures won't lead to bankruptcy.

Because other than F-150's and a handful of SUV's, what, exactly does Ford have to offer? Presuming the Mustang EV supplants the ICE Mustang.

Furiosa came out during the tail end of the slide in popularity of the girlboss action movie.

That it's not actually a girlboss action movie doesn't matter. There's no way to sell that movie without the target audience going, "Well, it's another girlboss action movie from a franchise that's supposed to star a man."

However, the good news is that it seems that the Australian government actually paid for most of the film, so it's possible that we could still get another Mad Max movie.

Toyota, AFAIK, started this with their "electrified diversified" campaign. Everything is an EV now, per Toyota. "Hybrid EV" and "plugin hybrid EV" and "battery EV."

Toyota's strongest tech and engineering - and a lot of strategic direction, as far as I can tell from the outside - is in gas and hybrid (which is probably good - because hybrid is often decent for a lot of use cases), so they changed the language to suit their own purposes.

The others like Ford and VAG are playing "monkey see, monkey do" and hoping nobody notices. One consequence of this will be that "EV" is going to be redefined in general.

Given the amount of stockholder value destroyed by Vanguard, State St., and Blackrock due to their incompetent and intentional mismanagement of the funds given to them to manage. Every one of those CEOs at that firm should be stripped of all wealth and put in a Supermaxx prison for a very long time.

Inflation has kept that from being seen by investors but inflationary periods never last forever and then a rectification of market values occurs.

127 Your daily Atlantic:

This Is Not the End of America
“Democracy lives in the people.”
By McKay Coppins

...To a person, everyone I talked with believed they were on the verge of victory—that Harris would defeat the “wannabe dictator” once and for all, pull America back from the brink, and save the world’s oldest democracy from descending into facism.

Then I would ask a question they found dispiriting: What if she doesn’t?

...Trump and his allies have already clearly signaled what they will do if he loses: Claim victory anyway, declare the election rigged, and engage in another conspiracy to overturn the result, whether by litigation, extra-Constitutional arm-twisting, or even violence. The pressure campaign is unlikely to work; as Paul Rosenzweig noted in The Atlantic, none of the officials ...is a partisan election denier. Still, this full-frontal assault on the validity of the election represents an ongoing threat.

...I’ve begun to worry that prophecies of democratic breakdown following a Trump reelection could become self-fulfilling. What happens to America if Harris voters have fully internalized the idea that democracy is on the ballot, and then “democracy loses?"

I think they already won this round. Not sure about the 2nd. Not even sure what the 2nd round will be. But I think it won't be over EV/hybrid. It will be over some newer tech. Any tech for mass adoption of 100s of millions of units (vehicles) using yuge, expensive, highly toxic and inherently dangerous batteries is most likely a dead end.

155 Part 2 of your daily Atlantic:

...In 2016, Trump’s surprise victory was met with a groundswell of small-d democratic energy. There were marches in the streets, and record-breaking donations to the ACLU, and waves of grassroots organizing. Subscriptions surged at newspapers committed to holding the new administration to account; books about combating tyranny became best sellers. The energy wasn’t contained to the liberal “resistance” movement. Conservative expats launched their own political groups and publications. As my colleague Franklin Foer recently wrote, the warnings of impending autocracy in America at the time “helped propel a spirit of loud, uncompromising opposition to Trump.”

...Joe Biden’s victory represented a triumphant climax in the narrative of the Trump era. And had the one-term, twice-impeached president simply receded into a Mar-a-Lago exile, the story might have ended with a tidy civic moral: An aspiring authoritarian was vanquished in the most American way possible—at the ballot box. Democracy wins again. But of course the story didn’t end there...Trump is within a coin flip of returning to the Oval Office has created some dissonance in liberal America.

"Fastest-growing" is easy easy easy when the product or company is new.

"Our platform is the fastest-growing SaaS CRM system in the market this year" isn't meaningful without context. Going from a million bucks in sales during the beta year with preferred partners to 50 million bucks in the year of true general availability is a killer growth rate, but doesn't indicate market leadership and it cannot be used to gauge demand or market conditions.

160 There any sort of authoritative (clandestine?) source for e-vehicle fires? There was a massive vehicle fire on I-10 eastbound at Gessner in Houston on Tuesday that was raging at 5:30pm. Black smoke plume you could see from over a mile away (I thought it was a building on fire). The smoke was billowing over all 6 lanes on the westbound side. 2+ hours later and there were still lanes blocked and clean up ongoing. I couldn't get a good look at the vehicle but been searching city / state accident databases and news articles and can't find anything about it, though loads of accidents are logged... It seemed to match all the descriptions of an e-vehicle fire. That's a major thruway and seems too big to not report. Just curious if it was an e-vehicle that was deliberately covered up...

Turn DC into a monument city and disperse the agencies throughout the US. With virtual meetings and modern communications technology--there is no reason to have everything centralized.

...Last week, The New York Times reported on a memo...warning Democrats that persuadable voters weren’t being moved by messages that focused on the former president’s authoritarianism. “Attacking Trump’s fascism is not that persuasive,” the email read. Compared with 2020, fewer Americans are telling pollsters that they are highly motivated to vote, or that this is the most important election of their lifetime.

...Biden’s son Hunter recently told Politico he was worried that Trump’s reelection would mean “losing our democracy to a fascist minority” and warned that a second Trump term “is potentially the end of America as we’ve known it.”

...I’ve wondered whether another Trump victory would spur in them the same spirit of post-2016 activism or send them spiraling into fatalism and disengagement.

...Some of them told me about friends...who might tend toward fatalism if Trump wins again. But the people I met...were not thinking of Election Day as a singular were not thinking of Election Day as a singular make-or-break moment.

...“Democracy lives in the people.” As long as people hold on to "that spirit, it will be hard to kill.”

In large part that's just the market talking. Buyers want SUVs and station wagons that are called something cooler to avoid the stigma of station wagons.

The only sedans that sell are a few mid-range Japanese and high-end German. And even that is starting to wane as SUVs gradually take over even that market. I doubt there will be more than a handful of sedans on the road in 20 years.

Que Mala and the Dems have run a demonization campaign with little if no positive record to run on and a program to govern (because that would be unpopular with the donors or unpopular with the party). That decreases turnout to committed partisans and is similar to the way GOPe lost a lot of elections. I would guess the drop in Early Votes are reflective that A) the Biden record is not considered good by people not in the passive investor class, B) Que Mala has failed to indicate anything positive in her race of what she would do in office. That turns off partisan leaners who often then just stay home.

The slight dropoff for Trump in EV from 2020 may or not be Trump fatigue or a distrust in early voting from demonstrated problems in the past two elections there involving fraud. Those voters may be planning to show up on Election Day or EV at the last minute. Some may not show up at all.

Indy vote return is something that is as important as those are the leaners and true independents that can break a close race into a rout.

225 I feel like I'm being "psi-opp'd" when it comes to the sudden Kamala "surge."

It feels, to me, like a last-gasp effort to drive up Dem turnout and stifle GOP turnout on election day.

Early voting is overwhelmingly positive for Trump, to the point where the lead is almost insurmountable in several key states, assuming normal (not even extraordinary) voting trends hold on election day.

I think, right now, Trump is the absolute favorite to win Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. That puts him at 268 and needing just one more. It's inconceivable that half the swing states would all swing big for Trump and the other half would vote for Kamala, when the issues of the election are national not regional.

At the very least, it gives the Dems cover for a cheat. They will claim that we all voted early, so of course there is a big surge for Biden at 3 am.

I think there are three paths to a Kamala win:

1) polls are somehow under-estimating her level of support, as kind of a "pollster overcorrection" from the past two Presidential Election cycles.

2) there is a silent woman vote for abortion that is such a large bloc that it will swing several states from Trump to Kamala, costing him a state like Georgia, for example.

3) The big early voting lead that Trump is getting is cannibalizing his day-of vote total, and the enthusiasm/momentum we're seeing is really just the same people who supported him in 2016 and 2020, but now a larger portion of them are more willing to vocally say so.

Israel has defeated Hezbollah. Defeated.

The Hez have agreed to implementation of UN resolution 1701, which requires them to withdraw to north of the Litani river. They appear to have dropped their previous insistence that a Gaza truce must come first.

The major sticking point now is that Israel rightly insists on being able to enter Lebanon at will to insure that 1701 is enforced. Given that UNIFIL and the Lebanese government have never enforced 1701 before, this is only reasonable.

Israel has achieved a striking and decisive victory here.

258 For all his faults, the best thing Glenn Beck ever did was be the guy to expose Van Jones' past in 2009 and cut off his political ascent at the knees. The media was forced to report on what Beck revealed, and Jones got fired from the position as Obama's "green jobs czar" and it made him untouchable for a cabinet position. He'd be a lot higher up in the ranks, and a lot more dangerous, it that hadn't happened.

"Jones was under fire for his past affiliation with the 9/11 conspiracy “truthers” and for calling Republicans “a**holes” in a video before he was appointed to the Obama administration. Republicans had also begun using him to escalate criticism of the administration’s deployment of czars across the policy landscape, saying that they were being used to avoid Senate scrutiny of appointees.

More problematic for the White House, perhaps, was the fact that Jones’ controversial statements fit snugly into the narrative woven by some conservative critics of Obama as a dangerous leftist, a critique that goes back to the campaign and was based as much on his past work as a community organizer and associations with the likes of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers"

Not certain yet; the problem is treating Hezbollah like it is a responsible organization, or some kind of government. Some guy in Beirut may say "oh sure we'll withdraw and stop fighing!" and some guy out in Baalbek with a storage tunnel full of missiles may say "f that, I'm shooting everything I got." So you can't believe any promise of a cease fire or withdrawal by Hezbollah until after it is confirmed to have actually happened.

And of course the go-to trick of all of those groups is to promise that it will happen to get Israel to stand down, and then to never actually do what they say.

This is exactly whats happening. I've been told I was a moron for not believing the early voting trends vs years past are indicative of overall success but here we are... nearly half a million ballots in the hole.

Our strategy this year was to do what? Do what the Democrats did in 2020 just more better? What did the Democrats early voting rates in 2020 have to do with their electoral success? You can't just seize on one element of the overall election and say "that was the reason!" Thats myopic and simplistic.

The very first rule you learn in sailboat match racing is that you'll never catch the guy in front of you if you just do the same things he's doing. Even if you do them better.

While I agree that Trump has done a much better job campaigning this cycle than in 2020, its simply not enough to overcome the dire negative emotions that have been fostered by our media and ruling class culture. Those of you that aren't surrounded by TDS every day probably don't get to see it.

Possibly. Back in the day, you could try to estimate that by cross referencing top ten problems facing the US with partisan id including leaners. In any particular state, you can get idiosyncratic responses from the electorate that have little to do with the national campaigning issues. But hard to decipher even after the election because most of the exit polling is more on the national basis and issues rather than idiosyncratic local issues.

The disaster in NC is one such example of something idiosyncratic that could affect indy votes.

_______

I'm on the same page. Nobody knows how this will end up because it hasn't been done before. We have no actual results or even data points. We have two theories: (1) early voting cannibalizes election-day voting such that the total number of GOP votes is about the same and (2) early voting is mostly "new" votes that wouldn't have voted on election day, so when the usual election day red wave hits, the GOP will end up with many more votes. I think (1) is more likely, but that's just my gut.

The much more interesting actual data point is how much lower Dumocrap early voting is. If these odious dickswaggers aren't voting early, I doubt they'll get off their lazy asses and vote on ED.

The Hez have agreed to implementation of UN resolution 1701, which requires them to withdraw to north of the Litani river. They appear to have dropped their previous insistence that a Gaza truce must come first.

Right; rallies mean nothing, early voting data means nothing-- all that matters is the story the media is pitching, and based on that, we ded. The framework is all in place for a puke-making "inspiring" story of how a late-breaking surge of women and independents saved Kamala in MI, WI, and PA. The votes will be fake, like last time, but all that matters is the "official" story, and if Twitter under Musk tries to question it, look for Musk to be indicted for voting-law "violations" within a few months.

As noted, Pa is a corrupt dirty state and has hundreds of thousands of extra voter registrations it can leverage to arrive at any number they need to push Kamblabla and here retard marxist VP over the finish line.

330 Still a massive advantage to Dums in total ballots returned, though. You seem to think the GOP will make this up on election day. I hope you are right. I don't think you are right. I fear that all the GOP has done is taken election-day votes and turned them into early votes.

But you have no proof of that, and in fact what little proof you might glean from this is that the dems are not nearly as motivated as before, where as the GOP early vote total against 2022 is up vs a 2000 election where everyone voted early almost at command. While the electorate of the parties is in a state of flux, the almost civic minded must vote mentality still exists among the MAGA groups, even if they were not regular voters before. It is because they think their vote matters now, and they are pissed as hell.

333 All of this EV start-up/shut-down business is the result of shitty management. There was never a case for EVs to be anything other that special-purpose vehicles. Basically a golf cart on steroids limited to urban use and as a second vehicle because when it gets down to it you really do need a normal car.

But an entire industry convinced itself this was the future.

And now they and we are paying for it.

It was always stupid but it was always someone else's money, until it wasn't and then when they need other peoples money, customers, buying them, it became obvious that the case didn't exist.

339 Look at it another way;

2016: Trump 62m votes / Hillary 65m votes

2020: Trump 74m votes / Biden 81m votes

Does anyone believe Kamala will exceed Biden's 2020 vote total, considering how D voter registration is provably down across the board this year?

Meanwhile, there is ample reason to think Trump will improve on his 2020 vote total, considering how the GOP voter registration is way up this year.

So if Kamala performs closer to Hillary's numbers, and Trump rises, we might be looking at something like Trump 78m and Kamala 70m.

Granted, popular vote isn't the election, but regardless of the media's hinting at it, it is inconceivable that Trump would win the popular vote and lose the electoral college.

Then again, Democrats told us they were going to steal it in 2020 ("Trump vote will be big on election night and then a late Biden surge will come in late, putting him over the top"), so maybe the media is telegraphing it for us again ("Trump is doing better in blue states he won't win, so he could possibly win the popular vote and still lose the electoral college by losing the rust belt").

I don't buy it, but there it is

340 ‘ . I fear that all the GOP has done is taken election-day votes and turned them into early votes.’

Same here. I haven’t yet figured out how the early voting implies that our totals will be higher than the Rats’ totals.
=====
Y'all may not know it but your voting history is public including which primary or party that you register with. Campaigns get data dumps at least daily if not quicker over who has voted and who has not plus whether they have voted in the past three general elections, two general elections, primaries, local elections, or never voted at all etc.

Instead of the stupid and pointless robocalling, blanket radio and tv ads, and signage, modern campaigns use micro marketing techniques to specifically use social media to aim ads at people, social influencers that people follow, and targeted mailers personalized to that person's interests etc.

They then follow up with in person calling to make sure that people have voted, offer rides to the polls if they have no way to get there, offer to assist in absentee ballot for shutins, and so on.

Most of the media pundits blathering around like braying sheep about politics know nothing about politics only optics.

Tell me idiot,

If the Lightning was flying off the lots (and not requiring the manufacturer to PAY the dealers to take delivery of them) ... why would production be halted?

Ford didn't even try to bullshit us and say it was for "product quality assurance" or some other excuse.

They flat out said that they're matching production with demand... which is severely lacking.

And while the F150 ICE/hybrid variants have a 117 day supply, Ford won't say what the Day Supply of Lightnings are - but the Mach-E (not a mustang) is 130 days and the e-Transit van is 128 days.

So while you might get your palm sticky thinking about forcing us all into your gay little death trap coppertop golf carts... the market is telling you to fuck right the fuck off.

The problem has always been the courts and getting them to undo certified election results.

The Pa SOS has already stated ahead of time that election results will not be announced on election night, so we can anticipate a couple of weeks at a minimum of jamming ballots into tabulators, and then quick certifying of election results, and then the specatcle of courts deciding nobody has any standing to sue, and voila, Kamblabla and her marxist gimp retard VP are declared the victors.

We literally saw this play out in 2020 and 2022.

Oh, I know.

The challenge is getting courts beforehand. And there are some signs here and there that courts are more amenable this time (like the expanded voting in Bucks County).

Throw in some extra sauce like county-level DAs going after illegal and fraudulent registrations in the past few days, and there's some reason to hope that the hugely bigger hole that D's will have to climb out of once election day starts can't be climbed out of.

We'll see.

But, again, I think WI is more likely to turn that PA.

You pick one poll and stay with that brand. Different polling outfits use different assumptions as to who will vote (or use shitty screenings like all persons (worthless) or the registered voter (semi worthless).

The trend is about all you can derive from using one poll because the assumptions of turnout and sampling is usually consistent from poll to poll by that one company.

388 We are all afraid of the cheat. I get it.

At this moment, unlike 2020, there is no good news for the dems. Trump has at least a legitimate shot at popular vote victory. The dems began recently spouting a bunch of if Trump wins the popular vote and loses republicans will support popular vote. They are spouting that because they are fully aware Trump has a chance at a popular vote win. While it doesn't guarantee an EC win, for the GOP candidate it is almost a certainty.

All D early voting is down, badly. You can reference it against almost any metric. As TJM mentioned, the dems are voting like it is a midterm, the R's like a presidential. There are many fewer ballots out there to work with, than in 2020, where even then the dems had to move heaven and earth to get FJB over the top. There is no evidence that the either the GOP will have a significant voting day drop or the D's a significant voting day surge.

Arizona just got slapped around on citizenship status - the areas of potential cheat are well known. The lawyers are already there and working. I expect the dems to try and juice the count. I expect this time the RNC will not allow it to go unchallenged.

That is the intent of doomers---paid or otherwise. They want you feeling miserable because depressed miserable people isolate themselves and become subjects rather than citizens.

That is why doomers of all stripes piss me off.

390 This busty blonde in a one-piece wants an exciting, torquey, balls-to-the-wall EV sports car, but understands that this is a niche luxury market:

Not sure why, as she's built for comfort, not for speed.

Heh. While economics is the dismal science; history is in fact the tragic science. Kipling's poem, Gods of the Copybook Headings, is a poetic recitation of history and man's folly.

397 I work at a DOE site. I've been seeing a lot of GSA Lightning pickups around. It's possible that that dimwit Granholm or Senile Joe's surrogate has been pressuring the GSA to bail Ford out for the mistakes that they forced Ford to make.

We'll make it up in volume!

400 That "EV demand wanes" story is getting worn thin by Tesla and BYD growing sales. EV share is growing world wide. Others would say you're just flat out lying, I'd have to agree.
