NASA's astronauts aboard the International Space Station have been told to prepare for an urgent evacuation amid growing safety concerns. The US space agency and its Russian counterpart, Roscomos, are tracking 50 'areas of concern' related to a growing leak aboard the station. NASA is now calling the cracks in a Russian service module a 'top safety risk' - escalating the threat rating to five out of five. Astronauts have been warned to stay in the American section when the module is open so they can be close to their spacecraft in case of an emergency evacuation. Although officials have been aware of the issue since 2019, the exact source of the leak is still unknown. All potential cracks have been covered with 'a combination of sealant and patches' but NASA warned that the leak reached its fastest rate yet in April this year. Concerns over the station's safety are now so high that NASA has negotiated with Roscomos to only open the hatch when absolutely necessary and to keep it sealed in the evenings. And that's not the only cause for concern, as the space agency has warned that the ISS is at risk of being pelted with micro-meteors and space debris.

Personally, I think the Portland one was aimed at the early voting, which is rumored to be heavily Republican.

The consular officer is legally obligated to refuse issuance of the visa if he thinks that you are likely to overstay the visa, or violate the terms of the visa in some other fashion.
The visa rejection rates for some countries have traditionally been quite high - in Guatemala, for example, the rejection rate was 59% in the last year of the Trump Administration.
In 2022, the rejection rate was 5%, and in 2023, the rejection rate was 22%.

Personally, I think the Portland one was aimed at the early voting, which is rumored to be heavily Republican.

Portland is a Communist state. Vancouver, WA has traditionally been a rather red area to the point that Portlanders once called it the trailer park capitol of the universe. Portland's distain for Vancouver residents is so great that for years the fought replacing the bridge over the Columbia river and then on the Portland side eliminated a lane of travel. All of this was to punish the hicks for driving cars in an attempt to force Vancouver to pay for a light rail station and the rail extension in downtown Vancouver. I kid you not here - I once lived there and had to deal with this shit everyday. So yes, it could easily go Republican but Seattle being the northern version of the Communist State of Portland dominates and dictates statewide election outcomes.

I witnessed this firsthand in 1994 at the American Consulate in Johannesburg. I was there sorting some paperwork and had to wait, when this 20-something African lady came in wanting a tourist visa. The consular officer grilled her for over an hour, establishing that she had no ties to her present circumstances, including her job, and told her repeatedly that she was a primary candidate to go to the US and never leave. I don't remember if she had a USA sponsor but probably not. She eventually left without a visa.

Depending on the waste incinerated, some of the ash can be mined. Ash eventually ends up in landfill at a significantly better compaction rate of course. Ash Leachate is a mess. Would significantly improve their concern over landfill space, however.

My Youth, I am running down my driveway in a certain moment, on a certain day, (though I cannot say that day) and the sun is getting low in the sky, and the air is cool with a smell of Pine and Sycamore trees and I FEEL IT THEN..the earth tilting slightly on it's axis and the energy hits me ...JUST SO.
And I sprint out onto my street looking for my neighbor kids to play a round of "Kick The Can." with THAT SMELL pushing me on. I cannot describe other than a kind of "Electricity."

Mulled Cider:
2 quarts apple cider
2 cups orange juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Put into a tea-ball -or- staple into a folded-closed coffee filter, before adding to liquid:
12 whole cloves
12 whole allspice
1 broken-up cinnamon stick
Simmer for at least 20 minutes, then serve with a whole cinnamon stick in each cup. Add nutmeg if desired.

In the latest Warhammer games one of the fan favorite side characters is Valtus a Redemptor Dreadnought - basically if you get crippled they put your remains into a mech body allowing you to continue to fight.
And this guy runs around and wrecks the enemy with no absolutely no fear even by the standards of a space marine, making him perhaps the most heroic depiction of a handicapped person in a video game. Oh and Warhammer is very, very anti-woke. But...it is lore accurate, makes perfect sense in the warhammer universe and the character isn't a token or Mary Sue...

I bought as big of a garbage disposal I could get, and a used sink in a frame I built out of scraps to grind my apples up. It won't accept being out of balance, so I chop the apples in quarters ahead of time before grinding them down. It makes a very nice slurry to press
My press is built around a 3-1/2 tongue jack t It used to be that my bottleneck was grinding, but now the slowest part is pressing the slurry and the water bath canning of the quart jars
I am limited by jars and shelf space.

Here too but the '60s/'70s and we called it King of the Castle. You used to chant, "I'm the King of the castle and you're the dirty assholes". It was only in adulthood using the internet that I learned it's supposed to have been "and you're the dirty vassals!"
We also played tackle British Bulldog in the snow [even just an inch covering the playground] where you start with one kid trying to stop all of the other kids from running from the start-point to the 'safe' wall. The original 'it' would tackle/tag the one kid; the two would get another one [or two] and so on until there was just one kid left trying to make it to the safe wall!

Discouraging thoughts I have about eating out are: we are all very aware that food and labor costs have skyrocketed AND people have less disposable income. Restaurants have to turn a profit. One of the few options would be to try to pay less for food stuffs. Government has shown itself to be mostly corrupt and buyable. Government is supposed to monitor the restaurants. Toss in the fact that fast food now costs what midlevel restaurants used to and it adds up to a big "no, thanks"

All the grocery stores around here (Upstate SC, Greenville area) flirted with 24/7 for a while. No more for any of them, and I think that started to end before 2020.

The Walmarts around here did stop 24 hour operation during Covid. This was supposed to be temporary, but they haven't gone back yet.
I've heard it was "shrinkage". They noticed that theft was reduced, which would mean most of the shoplifting was the late night crowd, if true. Well, not most, but a good chunk of it, enough to make them see the numbers that late night was costing them a lot.

Shopko used to open round the clock in December... nice store, good prices and quality merchandise. Of course, this was in the Before Times and it was reasonably safe to be out in the wee hours of darkness.
Walmart, Walgreens and our fave grocery store are no longer open 24 hours. Sucks when I can't sleep & would like to do some shopping in peace and quiet.

Here it's about 40 miles. CVS and Walgreen's close pharmacy at 10 P M. However there is a hospital about 6 blocks away they should have a pharmacy. - I would think emergency meds would indicate emergency treatment.
I followed Glenn Beck's old admonitions when he talked about supply chain interruptions. Also save all left overs. I've got so many left overs I have to label what they are for and how they were to be administered.

There's one CVS that still goes 24/7 in the local area here. They have a uniformed security guard there in the wee hours I've noticed, and that was even before the Covid shit started.
They also have an annoyingly loud alarm that goes off when you enter the store during that period. That's to alert them, one of the employees told me. She said you wouldn't believe what can go on late night.

Every time I see that I hearken back to times working late on the other side of town. Around to corner was a Chicken Shack convenient to my departure. I often stopped for some and always in the back corner was an old Black man in a chair leaned back against the wall, relaxed, with a shotgun across his lap.

Sometimes seemed that the totes weren't quite as full as they should've been, after sitting there over the weekend....

So, we got a new Hostess. She'd seat the customers, take care of the Waiting List when we were super-busy, and ring-up their checks at the end.
One busy night, as dinner rush coming to an end, she came RUNNING through the kitchen & toward the rear exit with her sandals in hand. Man, the girl was FLYIN' out the back!
She'd emptied the till and took off before we knew what was happening. (Found out later that her BF had gotten out of jail.) Bet he put her up to it, under threat.

My Youth, I am running down my driveway in a certain moment, on a certain day, (though I cannot say that day) and the sun is getting low in the sky, and the air is cool with a smell of Pine and Sycamore trees and I FEEL IT THEN..the earth tilting slightly on it's axis and the energy hits me ...JUST SO.
And I sprint out onto my street looking for my neighbor kids to play a round of "Kick The Can." with THAT SMELL pushing me on. I cannot describe other than a kind of "Electricity."
Fall.

Yesterday & today have been much cooler and rainy. Not freezing yet, but cold overnight.
Trees didn't 'color-up' much but have begun to shed leaves. Except for the walnut-- once there's a hard frost, it will drop all leaves within a couple days. I like that! No constant raking, just all at once & done.
The fresh clean air after a rain, mixed with just a whiff of wood smoke... ahhhhhh.
Autumn is the best!
