Meet The PetMorons

From Jewells:

This is Brody, a rat terrier we rescued from the Independence MO animal shelter. He's 15 years and is a cuddle bug.
It felt like things had stagnated at Sheps's over the past year or so but I think things may finally change. JJ finally got adopted and was the reason we could never bring a small dog into the mix. He found the perfect home. Then sadly Roscoe and Hope both crossed the rainbow bridge. They were our 2 invalids.
We have also begun earnest fund raising to make big improvements to Shep's including an expansion of the original building. The cost is $900,000 and we have raised about $200,000 so far. I'm hoping to sign up to volunteer very soon.

Brody is adorable! Thanks for the update about Shep's!

Good morning…my screen/nic name is rocdoctom. Here is my story.
The photo is of Sheldon, the cat, and Gunnar, the lab. They are in their usual--Is it dinner time yet?—position. Sheldon came to stay with us while my sister-in-law was doing some home remodeling. Gunnar had never been around a cat so we were nervous at first, but things have gone smoothly from the first minute. They have become fast friends. Gunnar is just happy to have another four-legged companion in the house. When Sheldon left, Gunnar spent quite a bit of time searching around the house for him. And my sister-in-law says Sheldon keeps asking when he can have another sleepover.

There is quite a size difference between Sheldon and Gunnar! It is wonderful that they became such good friends! Hope that Sheldon can visit again soon.

Good morning! Just wanted to make a contribution.
This is Winnie, the Tiny Tomboy Princess. In two weeks she is going to be eight years old and as you can see, she is happy to take over the couch for a good resting spot.
She also likes the couch in the basement.

Winnie is lovely. Thanks to our mystery contributor (NR Pax). Looks like Winnie might have some company on the couch from time to time.

This is Dusty, who crossed the rainbow bridge last week.
He was rescued as an adolescent from a forest roadside in the Sierras and brought to the home of his rescuer, where attempts to find his owner were futile.
He was beloved by his family and friends and was a good watchdog. He moved to Arizona last year with his family.

He will be greatly missed, but he no longer suffers from arthritis.

Miss you, Dusty.

We have had Mourning Doves in our back yard for the past few days. Sometimes quite a few. By-Tor seems to find birds in lots of places:

5 She's a redhead tricolor, small for her breed at 20.5 pounds, and a voracious food hound. Lily the corgi gets a 1/3 cup of dry at 6 a.m. and another at 4 p.m.

In between, if she is a good girl, she may get two or three milkbone minis broken in half.

10 My son's Bernese Mountain Dog had his ear amputated yesterday due to a cancerous tumor. The vet said that there was no other evidence of cancer in his lymph nodes.

That's good news but the dog is in a good deal of post operative pain. He's a good dog and I'm asking you all for prayers.

12 Yay. Missed the coffee & prayer thread this morning, but didn't miss the pet thread. 50% is better than nothing.

Daisy the madcap Malinois went wild this week and ran all the way down to the gate and across the road. When I caught up with her, she was running around, sniffing and barking with the two neighbor dogs. Fortunately, they all seemed to be playing nicely. I finally got the leash on her and hauled her back home.

Thought we'd taught her better. Just glad she didn't become street pizza, because she seems to be pretty dumb still about vehicles.

Tightened up her control collar and upped the zap level a bit. Frequently use the beep and vibe to which she responds well, but very rarely use the zap because she's usually obedient. She just gets so excited and reverts to wild sometimes.

Daughter has come by frequently in the past week (while her washing machine was out of order), and brought Daisy's two "cousins," Chowie and Maya. They have a great time running around together. I have pix I have to send.

Thank everyone for helping me with the cats Trumpy and Snowflake.

This week I bought a very nice cat tree, scratching post, round circle ball game, 2 electronic flopping fish, cat nip, litter box attractor, cat leash and smaller toys. I guess I'm now a cat and dog person.

Trumpy was fixed Thursday, has a cone on and is doing well. Snowflake will be neutered next week. Our friends are taking them to the humane society which only charges $50. They said the cone has to be on for 10 to 14 days. We'll see.

I'm working really hard to turn them into indoor cats. They are inside for over 18 hours a day so we're getting there. For this transition, I'm being very generous with the food supply. They have been getting a few bites of tuna fish or treats when they come in.

I was worried about Trumpy but he is an outdoor cat. He does stay on a blanket I have on the porch and they both stay around the house. I just put them out 10 minites ago and they are still in view on the patio.

I've been lessening the amount of time they are out. If they are in view, we're good.

Of course. It's so hard to see pets in pain. Hope son's dog recovers soon. My sister and BIL have two Bernese Mountain dogs. They are friendly dogs. They have been having various Bernese as members of their family for about 30 years.

28 Worked late at the farm last night.

Drove east into our native grass field just before sundown. Meadowlarks were streaming out of the short grass ahead of me. I bet at least 500 got up in the first 500'.

The field is large enough, that I estimate it held at least 10,000 meadowlarks!

(P.S. I am in charge of the habitat for wildlife on the farm. While not strictly my pets, I hope they qualify for this thread!)

She has the pleasure of giving squirrels a cardio workout.

The story of her adoption: I used to volunteer for a group that helped transport them to foster homes. We'd meet the hauler down in Virginia, put them in our cars and head to the next stop.

Winnie was riding with me and three other dogs. The other three were acting like nuts and she walked over to me with an expression that said "I am the sweetest and most well behaved girl you've ever seen so take me home."

We adopted her a week later once it was established she was safe with cats.

35 They are pretty strict on what kind of fencing you can have to adopt a mustang. So 'free' means "If you are already set up to have horses with 5 or 6 ft tall fences"

There are lots of cute articles about the cost of a 'free' horse floating around. Tack, feed, veterinary and farrier care. And then if you get into it you end up buying a truck and trailer.

Stateless, we were told Dagny La Siberienne should wear a cone after her spaying. We put it on her and she went absolutely ballistic -- she panicked and went tearing around the living room, trying to get away from The Thing That Was Following Her! We finally grabbed her and took the cone off. She was fine, as it happened, and never bothered her stitches.

I've never had a cone recommended for a male cat, either. If Trumpy will handle it okay, then I guess it works.

The electronic flopping fish has been a success for several cats now. I bought one for the late Chekov D. Siberian, and he loved it, but his buddy Wolf wouldn't go near it. (Wolf was a big rugged black cat, afraid of very little, but he didn't like the water fountain I bought them or the flipping fish.) The current two like it a lot.

40 We had an exciting week with Lincoln the wonder weim. He got sick right before we left for Florida, and right after seeing specialists at OSU for his autoimmune disease. They tweaked his meds and it really threw him for a loop. By the time we got to Florida we had been through vomiting and diarrhea all week. OSU ghosted me and would not return my calls for help. We rushed him to our vet in Florida and she sent us directly to University of Florida vet hospital ED. He was in intensive care for 2 days but they fixed him and he came home Friday. I emailed the Dean of the vet school and the head of the vet hospital at The Ohio State University telling them that UF was fixing their
mistake and my dog was in ICU. I suddenly started getting calls and emails telling me they would help in any way possible. I told them thanks, but he was being cared for quite efficiently and effectively by UF vets. I'm sure I made someone's day miserable at OSU, but my dog is alive now and doing better, and that's all I care about.

Lucy the Fink is finally getting back to herself after the vet doubled her thyroid meds. It was clearly too much too fast. She was lethargic, antisocial and crabby for over a month. She wasn't drinking as much water or eating much. She was clearly not herself.

She's back to playing and finking and greeting me when I come home.

Sheesh.

My mom and her business partner had a business buying horses, training them and selling them and also giving riding lessons and boarding horses. Horses are crazy expensive to keep. Helps if you some slave labor handy.

51 42: Sadly true. the BLM has to keep rounding up wild horses so they don't kill the grass and starve, cuz they are prolific and much more difficult prey for predators than deer or elk; and even with adoption programs, prisoner horse training programs, and trainer competitions featuring mustangs, some of those wild horses are stuck in a crowded BLM corral for years.

All the female cats I've had to have spayed experienced no troubles afterward. Dagny was not off her feed or acting sick at all. They warned us not to play vigorously with her for a week or so, and we didn't, but Stirling her big black brother didn't get the memo. However, she didn't overdo and was fine.

Dagny slept with me during my nap this p.m., and once a week recently has sprawled on the bathroom sink counter while I brush my teeth. She's getting a little more demonstrative, I guess.

60 So the horse you can adopt is a wild mustang? Not many people, even if they have a barn and a high fence and land for such things, would be ready to handle that. Maybe it would work if you already have a horse or two and know what you're getting into.

61 Stateless, I've enjoyed your discovery of cat ownership. We became cat owners a couple of decades ago, when a cat clawed at a window one snowy afternoon. We knew nothing about cats, and followed a path similar to yours.

One thing that worked for us: I always fed her at 8pm. If she was outdoors, all I had to do was open the door and call, and then she was in for the night. Cats--at least any we have lived with--tell time very well. Meals. When I should get up. Etc.

62 Cones have never lasted long on any of my cats. They always manage to get them off so we no longer bother and just keep an eye open to see to it that they don't bother the sutures.

64 Feral cats frisky today. Small adult black cat leaping over tiny black kitten once, twice then Pounce! Much friendly wrestling. Adult black cat stretched out Jumps! from just laying alone, acts crazy then stretched out again Jumps! , flips. Does that several times. Catz iz nertz.

67 One thing that worked for us: I always fed her at 8pm. If she was outdoors, all I had to do was open the door and call, and then she was in for the night. Cats--at least any we have lived with--tell time very well. Meals. When I should get up. Etc.

The late and highly intelligent Marie-Antoinette, I swore, had a little clock in her brain. If I allowed her to get me up at six a.m. on a Saturday, say, on Sunday she'd start bothering me at 5:30. And she was a vocal cat when dinner or breakfast were imminent.

Fortunately my current two are very polite. Clearly they're eager to eat when I do get up, but they don't bother me. The late shaggy black Wolf, though, would jump up and paw gently at my head when he thought I should be up.

68 This is only our second autumn with Precious the Bichon. It's interesting how she responds to the change of seasons. With the cooler winds of autumn blowing it's like her nose has come alive. Maybe the different air carries scents differently but she stops all at once and spends time with her nose in the air sampling the various smells coming on the breeze. Heck, she is so studied in her approach she has us sniffing as well, wondering what we are missing. Not that we are influenced by a 16 year old dog or anything. Nope, not us.

Maybe she is teaching us to pay more attention to the world around us.

When Marie and I lived in CO, I went on a business trip and left her feeding and litter box chores to a neighbor lady. She did a fine job. But when I walked into my place after four days, Marie sat up and let out a yowl that was clearly, "Where've you beeeeen?" And it was not near her dinnertime, in fact she had just been fed.

Marie, of course, was oriented toward humans in a way I've rarely known among cats.

I've had three female cats spayed and none of them had to wear the Cone of Shame. They handled their stitches just fine.

See, that helps. Trumpy is so good natured that after the cone was on, he's been fine with it. He occasionally tries to scratch so I'll do that for him

I'm taking care of my mother but want to get all of them onto a schedule soon. When I've taken care of our friend's cats across the street, they would run across the street to greet me and ask where food was.

I think the record was all 4 adult cats. It was kind of creepy. Lol.

Maybe, once I move to a climate with four seasons, my current two will become lap cats. Stirling already occupies my lap several times a week, but Dagny never.

90 Ironically enough, the do gooders succeeded in shutting down most if not all horse rendering plants. Yes it is true that an old horse, can end up as glue.

The wind up to doing that though, there is always a beginning and middle and end stage of things. Horses are expensive, anything that makes it more expensive means less and less people will take care of them.

Or adopt “free” horse in Nevada. Not worth the risk
