A gargoyle peering out from Notre Dame.
Brassai, 1930s

It's called "Le Stryge de Notre Dame." That is, a strig from Greek mythology. Not sure why this is a stryge and not a gargouille.

Oh: Apparently "true gargoyles" are involved in spitting out water from gutters on the roof:

This etymology hints at Le Stryge's association with darkness, mystery, and nocturnal creatures. Le Stryge, however, is not a true gargoyle, as it does not serve the architectural function of draining water. Instead, it belongs to the family of chimeras, ornamental sculptures that often adorn Gothic buildings.

Cleared up!

Adopting a senior dog who was abused in a breeding operation and then abandoned into a shelter. Now she has the life she always deserved.

The Bouncer.

Aw: Saving a baby horse trapped in the mud and reuiniting it with its mother. I'm surprised the mother horse didn't attack. How did the horse know he was helping rather than stealing the foal? (I've heard horses respect humans because of their height, not realizing that the horse itself is two or three times as big as a human when you consider length.)

Lost sheepdog is found guarding some sheep that strayed from the flock.

Toddler helps a puppy back to mama.

Dog smells her owner.

Family resemblance I.

Family resemblance II.

Dog needs to be rescued... from boredom.

Dog is proud to show off that he's a big boy and can use the pool by himself.

We're at a crisis point of bear out-of-controlness.

No really, these bears are learning martial arts now.

Now three dogs are climbing the Pyramid of Giza!

There is no rest when baby goat are around.

25 Interesting things going on in Gaza - the fighting in Lebanon it’s getting all the attention, and this is flying under the radar. Hamas began regrouping in northern Gaza, in Jabaliyah, and Israel encircled it and moved civilians out. Suddenly, with Sinwars death and lack of any new weapons due to the southern border finally being sealed, Hamas morale seems to have collapsed, and in surrounded area hundreds - perhaps over a thousand - Hamas gunmen have thrown down their weapons and surrendered.

53 My personal opinion is that the Dems would love the presidency, but that isn't their primary focus despite how desperate they(and the media) seem. Their main focus is the House.

With a majority they can fire up the impeachment machine again, nix all pending investigations, and pressure their peers on the other side of the aisle to cooperate or face the "music." Holding onto the Senate assures slow walking any potential nominations (inclusive of the AG of the DOJ to assure no relevant changes from their control).

In truth, the presidency is 3rd on their importance list, and #1(House) and #2(Senate) negate the detriment of losing that position. It would be icing on the cake, but really not that important.

101 It’s boring, but the reason an army accepts surrenders is that you want to encourage more of the same, and when fighters watch their comrades walk away their will to fight evaporates.

Another thing in play; one of the reasons Hamas loves to say “Israel kills children” is that they recruit children (by our standards) to fight for Hamas, and many if not most of these surrendering fighters are 15, 16, or 17 years old.

Wow. Tim Walz's links to China just keep getting worse.

Today, new reports show that Walz hosted multiple members of the CCP at his high school in 1996.

Many of them had links to a Chinese spy agency—a branch of Chinese intelligence "tasked with co-opting foreign leaders."

Yesterday, the @DailyCaller reported that Walz hosted a delegation of CCP members at his high school in the late 1990s.

Members of the delegation worked for a member unit of a Chinese intelligence service—the Chinese People's Association For Friendship With Foreign Countries.

NOPE! I watched that when I was on my Hammer Dracula kick. It's bad. And Christoper Lee refused to appear in it because it was terrible. THey got some bad actor for Dracula, and he's not even in it as dracula. I think he transforms into an old Chinese kung fu artist for most of the movie.

I do think Van Helsing is in it.

I worked for John Kelly and don’t believe him. His last ditch effort to stop Donald Trump is desperate. This is a personal vendetta from a staffer who failed at his job and believed as a chief of staff that he should have been the ultimate decisionmaker. President Trump loves America, will preserve our freedoms, and has done more for the Jewish people than any other president.

Kamala locked up Black dudes for selling drugs she probably buys weekly: Yeah, that one's going to leave a mark.

It actually does work, but you have to put the phone in a jar that has a lid that seals, pour the rice in on top of it, and let it sit closed up for a day or two.
If you have a flip phone or the like it helps to take the back off and take the battery out too. (this does not work if you drop your phone in the Pacific Ocean, trust me.)

Dessicant packages do work also, but if they are old and used up they make the closed jar more damp.

466 411 It actually does work, but you have to put the phone in a jar that has a lid that seals, pour the rice in on top of it, and let it sit closed up for a day or two.
If you have a flip phone or the like it helps to take the back off and take the battery out too. (this does not work if you drop your phone in the Pacific Ocean, trust me.)

Dessicant packages do work also, but if they are old and used up they make the closed jar more damp.

I'ma be honest, I think Iowa is pretty damn beautiful. It's nothing but rolling hills and pastures and nary a soul to be found.* And with the leaves changing colors? Nice!

However, this is only true until winter in which case Iowa will become a blinding white lunar landscape of snow and ice and zero degree temperatures.

*This is nice until you remember there's no one to hop on Google to report that the road your taking to the shipper is closed and you need to reroute.

Or H.L. Mencken. He would have given her a multitude of titles, to mock her vapidity with faux grandiosity.

536 >>Eris, how cool! In spite of what everyone thinks, the only real shiv/knife I have is the very cool one that Hrothgar got me. Plus I have lovely decorative ones from Weasel and Muad'dib.

So 3 shivs.

541 And another thing. She won't let throw out dinner forks with bent tongs that feel weird in your mouth.
Out they go.
Replaced with good stuff.

542 Actually, a few people at the TxMoMe a few years back have autographed shiva they "won" as door prizes.

545 If what I am replacing them with is superior, what is her argument?
Posted by: gourmand du jour at October 23, 2024 09:52 PM (MeG8a)

then you better have the argument ready like: I am tired of living like I am poor. I worked my whole life to give us good things and we missed a lot because we needed other things. I want this and I want you to have it because it makes me feel like I am treating you like you deserve after all these years.

550 21 I was thinking that maybe the oppo was going to take the L. Hope that Trump is a one off, hope for a financial collapse during his term and paint MAGA as Hooverism..but it looks more and more like they are planning some sort of Dec 1944 Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge) thing that has little actual hope of working out for them. Obviously AH had no hope of coming out of WW2 in any sort of personality tolerable condition..does the oppo truly believe they are in the same desperate position if Trump wins?
-----

I left the same way....the Dems ran this ridiculous ticket with the hopes of clearing the map for 2028. They will do everything they can to undermine Trump and turn him into a lame duck in '26. But you're right, the Dems look like they're going scorched Earth. They're going batshit, for real.
