Top Story

  • The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post are suing AI startup Perplexity over copyright infringement. (Variety)

To be fair, that seems to be Perplexity's entire business model: Index copyrighted content, summarise it, file off the serial numbers, and then provide it to users to answer their questions.
News Corp CEO Robert Thomson, in a statement about the lawsuit, said: "Perplexity perpetrates an abuse of intellectual property that harms journalists, writers, publishers and News Corp. The perplexing Perplexity has willfully copied copious amounts of copyrighted material without compensation, and shamelessly presents repurposed material as a direct substitute for the original source. Perplexity proudly states that users can 'skip the links' - apparently, Perplexity wants to skip the check."
From my understanding of Perplexity, this is actually pretty accurate.

    This bit less so:
We applaud principled companies like OpenAI, which understands that integrity and creativity are essential if we are to realize the potential of artificial intelligence
OpenAI is as unprincipled as any company in the industry, but with billions of dollars of investors' money to burn, they can pay off at least some of their victims.

I dunno if Castro ever had a mid-life crisis.

But you might be right. Certainly the whole business of the missiles happened that October. According to Wiki, it lasted from 16 to 28 October.

I lived through it, but have absolutely no memory of it. Back then I paid zero attention to TV "news" and my teacher didn't mention it. Years later Mom told me she stockpiled some water and canned food under the little table we had in the kitchen, concealed with a tablecloth, so we kids wouldn't have seen it.

Adults kept things from kids back then, I guess.

Thought (as did ALL of us) we were gonna go up in a brilliant flash. Actually we would have done just that so it likely would have been quick. We had 5 missiles to launch, 3 for sure and maybe the other 2 if Ivan didn't zero on us. And he KNEW where we were.

36 G'morning all!

No morning walk today as we need to take my MiL to the freight depot Amtrak station to go home after a nice week of visiting with us.

She got to bond with the kittens, and they seem to have certainly taken to her.

And with yesterday being the weekly 'weigh day', Frog has added almost another half pound and now hits 7.6 pounds. And tiny demure Margo has finally joined the 5 pound club. Hard to believe they were born 90 minutes apart, going by their weight.

And a short update on the failed attempt to integrate their mother into our home. Bandit is back at her chosen home, residing in the garage, with access to the outside during daylight.
And she is loving it. Plenty of human attention, freedom to roam, and being spayed, no fear of multiple pregnancies.

When I first adopted little Dagny, she was underweight for her breed and had a mild fever that required some antibiotics. I wondered if she would ever grow much, especially compared to big black Stirling, who at two weeks older was already shooting up and out like a weed. She has since sprouted nicely, is robust and solid, and -- if the stories are true about Siberians taking up to five years to mature -- may fill out even more.

Kind of a radical approach to privacy, but with it OFF it won't ring, it won't buzz, it won't light up, if someone calls or texts you.

Remembering the missiles of October
October 18, 2024 by Silvio Canto Jr.
Back in 1962, I was in Cuba and listened to President Kennedy speak about those missiles on the Spanish version of The Voice of America. I can still recall that Phillips radio in our living radio and my parents listening carefully to the speech. It must have been serious because my parents looked worried.

98 I like this Joe Mazzula guy...

“We’re all going to be dead soon, and it really doesn’t matter anymore, so there’s zero pressure. You’re either gonna win or you’re not. And when you win, you try to forget about it a week later and when you lose, you try to forget about it a week later. So it’s not pressure, it’s an opportunity. We have an opportunity here over the next few years, however long that we’re together.

“I’ve said this in the past, you have an opportunity to carry the organization forward, to double down on the tradition and history of what this organization has. And what else would you expect than someone expecting you to win all the time? I wouldn’t want someone expecting me to lose all the time. That would be debilitating. So we have an expectation to win.”

Best advice I can give:

1. Treat the phone as a convenience that is under your control. If you don't wish to be bothered, that's more important.

2. There is a setting that sets times to not be disturbed. Find it and put it to use.

3. Airplane mode and powering it off is a good thing.

I had Microware's OS-9 for the Motorola 6809. Its still around as an embedded OS. Nothing to do with IBM's OS/2 and offhand I don't know which came first. OS-9 is from 1979 so probably first.

For years there used to be an apartment complex on Storrow Drive in Boston which advertised open slots with a sign reading "If you lived here, you'd be home by now." I know the sign isn't there anymore; I don't know about the complex.

Every week on my way to the dairy, I go by an office which has a sign outside reading, "If you worked here, you'd be at the office by now." I always mentally change that to "If you worked here, the boss would be reaming your ass out by now."

It's a road sign along the Antelope Freeway, a Firesign routine that goes back to the 60's. And they copied it, from actual signs.

What I miss about answering machines is that I could listen to it answer the phone and if it was someone I wanted to talk to, I could pick up the phone. With Smartphones, I don't answer it if I don't know who is calling.

But isn't there something about the prevailing winds in the Northern Hemisphere shifting southward, and the Southern winds shifting north, over the course of a year? So radiation in the Northern Hemisphere would eventually reach the equator, and Australia and New Zealand, for that matter. Nevil Shute has that as a plot point in On the Beach.
