The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“All tech we are relying on is performing adequately, any issues are immediately addressed, and of course – like any big organization – we have parallel backup systems as a failsafe,” Trump campaign political director James Blair

Quote II

“We have collectively acknowledged that a membership dues increase is needed which is greater than the 25 percent (or $6.25) the National Board has authority to approve in a single triennium,” Girl Scouts of the USA President Noorain Khan and CEO Bonnie Barczykowski wrote in a handbook

Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Donating Your Body to Science

Pam Poulakos and Irene Hombs don’t want to be buried when they die. A standard cremation won’t do, either. The sisters from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have discussed their end-of-life options at length, and ultimately, they want to serve the greater good.

They’ve decided to donate their bodies to science.

Although I do not comment often on CBD's Food Thread I always read the content. He has never said that this drink cannot be made. So Charles, make one and report to us Morons.

It looks like Jonah got some balls. Oh yeah, his wife was out with her MAGA BFF.

The political analyst Samuel Lubell introduced the concept of the sun and moon parties in 1951. The sun party is the majority party, and “it is within the majority party that the issues of any particular period are fought out; while the minority party shines in reflected radiance of the heat thus generated.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Democratic Party was the sun party for two generations, until the dawn of the Reagan majority. When Bill Clinton signed welfare reform and (falsely) declared, “The era of big government is over,” he was reflecting the reality of that transformation.

In the early 2000s, the GOP receded back into moon status. “But,” as David Brooks noted in 2011, “something strange happened. No party took the lead. … Both parties have become minority parties simultaneously. We are living in the era of two moons and no sun.”

We drove through Iowa twice in the past 13 days. I guess we kicked in some money to their coffers.

BOONE, Iowa — A new study shows tourists in Iowa spent $7.3 billion for the first time.

The Iowa Visitor Economic Impact data, released for 2023 by the Iowa Tourism Office, reports that tourism-related expenditures totaled $7.3 billion for the first time in the state’s history. That’s a 5.1% increase from 2022. On average, visitors spent nearly $20 million per day experiencing all that Iowa has to offer.

It's the internet, the following story is plausible.

*****

I remember this as if it were yesterday.

Oct. 22, 1992: The Day Rush Limbaugh Rejected the GOP and Endorsed Bill Clinton

“I can no longer ignore what is becoming obvious,” Rush Limbaugh somberly notified his audience at the beginning of his three-hour show on Thursday, Oct. 22, 1992. His voice — and presumably his heart — was heavy. His tone was unusually forlorn. A melancholy mood permeated the air.

When I get old and decrepit don't let me out in public like Chris Matthews. My goodness his meds are not being properly dosed.

I’ve never seen a more heroic figure than Liz Cheney. She lost her state, probably forever. She lost her party. She lost her leadership in the Republican House. She probably could have been on her way to Speaker.

*****

It's Baked Alaska, not Baked Walmart. Posthumous Genius Award Winner.

A 19-year-old Walmart employee was discovered dead in a mysterious incident reportedly involving a large baking oven.

Police responded to calls of a ‘sudden death’ at a store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, around 9.30pm on Saturday, and found a deceased woman.

Where in the store her body was found as not immediately disclosed.

Too soon? Day old baked goods anyone?

From the parched prairie of NE Oklahoma...🤠

Last night, about 2am, we heard it raining, for about a minute. A few minutes later, it rained for almost five minutes. Got up this morning and there was no clue that it had rained at all. So. Very. Dry. Lord, we could use a little more. Lots more. Soon, please.

Howdy, y'all.

>>First Arnon Mishkin announces that the results will not be known for days ! Then MI, GA and PA (secretary of stae I assume) announce they will not have the results for days ! they are probably meeting in a bunker, and I want a JDAM....

As has been noted, Pa has over 700k of what it calls, inactive voter registrations as part of it's total voter registration.

What's an inactive voter registration?

Beats the sh*t out of me.

What it means though is that they have a reserve of over 700k potential ballots.

And being that nobodies going to audit any of this sh*t means they can generate any result they need.

Hence the statements of it's going to take weeks to count the ballots.

Do it in the far reaches of the lot, nobody will mind.

Years ago at work I printed some letter-size sheets with similar messages. I always kept several in my vehicle to put on windshields of cars in the parking lots parked by idiots and a-holes.

Back in the days of hand drafting, we used "sticky-backs" which were xerox-able sheets that adhered to mylar sheets to complete parts of drawings. We also used them to plaster on to windshields of cars whose alarms went off during the workday. 1980's in Chicago. I don't know if you can get them today, but they stuck like hell and were a genuine pain to remove.

RIGHT ON CUE: 2 weeks before the election, The Atlantic publishes article saying Trump wanted 'Generals that Hitler had.'

They also quote an unnamed source who claims Trump offered to pay for murdered Army soldier Vanessa Guillén's funeral but backed out and called her 'a fucking Mexican.'

Guillén's sister released this statement: “I am beyond grateful for all the support President Donald Trump showed our family during a trying time. I witnessed firsthand how President Trump honors our nation’s heroes’ service. We are grateful for everything he has done and continues to do to support our troops.”

And that is why there are so many werewolves around.
Right Werner?
Posted by: Kindltot

The logic is undeniable. A balding Werner envies their perfect hair, and would like to know their tailor. There is a sadness here, though, as some of their lycanthropic ranks seem to lose their passion for shape-shifting, and heed no longer the siren call of the full Moon. These were-werewolves cannot bring themselves even to howl over the moors. Sadder still are the Leopard Men and Were Hyenas, who, through a species-specific dysmorphia, pine to be lycans, yet these were-not-yet-would-that-they-were-werewolves must bear up under their affliction. There are some who claim that all of this explains the Kardashians, yet Werner remains unconvinced. Now, what were-Werner thinks on this is not clear, as he shares not his ruminations with me, not even on Oktoberfest. Would that it were not so. Ach.

151 Evening, Morons. If you have the opportunity to vote early, please do so. The Trump campaign is focused on low propensity voters and that means GOTV is absolutely essential. Most early vote states give a list of names of who voted to the campaigns each day, so they can remove those names from their list of potential contacts. Every early vote helps the campaign narrow its focus on the voters that still need to be contacted and persuaded.

In the past I waited until Election Day because I thought voting early just helped the Dems figure out how much they needed to cheat by. But the truth is they’re gonna cheat no matter what, if not by stuffing the ballot box then by not having enough ballots on hand in Republican precincts, or suddenly having “unforeseen technical difficulties” forcing people to wait for hours on Election Day, which is what happened two years ago in Arizona.

So don’t risk being caught in their malfeasance. Vote early if you can.

Seems like this problem could be easily fixed by requiring all foreign ballots to arrive by election day to be counted.
What's so hard about that? Foreign ballots just need to be mailed earlier.

Liz Cheney? Really?

Somebody on X explained that Kamala's campaign manager is Cesar Chavez's granddaughter, and her chief ad guy is a typical DEI hire.

Neither of them have ever held a job outside the political/nonprofit bubble.

Can't imagine why they can't figure out how to appeal to white males (or black males, for that matter).

So, I mentioned earlier about losing out on Godzilla in the Criterion sale. After much wailing, gnashing of teeth and tending of garments, I resolved to stop acting like a little bitch and got a bunch of other also awesomely awesome movies.

Demon Pond (Japan) (1979) (Masahiro Shinoda)
Don't Look Now (US/Italy) (1973) (Nicolas Roeg)
I Walked With A Zombie/The Seventh Victim: Produced By Val Lewton (1943) (Jacques Tourneur) (US) (1943) (Mark Robson)
Peeping Tom (UK) (1960) (Michael Pressberger)
The Seventh Seal (Sweden) (1957) (Ingmar Bergman)

So, a pretty damn good haul if I do say so.

And I think, well, that's enough spending for now.

And not five minutes ago Crunchyroll just put through the charge on that big $180 dollar Macross Plus box set I preordered in June.

I’m sorry, but this tweet is INSANE. It contains multitudes. The longer you look at the photos, the worse it gets.

1) They are shooting steel at 5-7 yards with rifles, which could’ve killed somebody given the force with which the bullets will ricochet off the steel targets at the at distance. You would instantly get permanently banned at my range if you did that. Zero questions asked.

2) Kinzinger holds his rifle like a complete ninny, and that will never not be funny to me. And pro-tip for @AdamKinzinger: the eye protection works better when it’s on your eyes, not your head. You stupid idiot. Try using your brain for once. You’re lucky you still have one after today.

3) Kinzinger is for some reason using a high-powered scope (at least a 3-9x by the looks of it) to shoot a target 5 yards away.

Never ever talked about politics until the 2020 election, when in her Christmas letter she talked proudly of how she voted for Biden because she just couldn't stand Trump. I am mystified as to how someone like her, who has not lived in the USA for decades, can still vote in our elections. I am assuming she used her parents' address to register to vote.

245 The BSA adding girls to their ranks is controversial, sure. But my son went through Cub Scouts with a den that had as many girls as boys (one was his cousin, in fact). The mother of one of the girls was his den leader. And after that experience I'm convinced it's a good move. If girls are interested in scouting and the outdoors, that's a good thing. Those girls were real gung-ho about camping.
Posted by: Caiwyn at October 22, 2024 10:40 PM (BaIXK)

It's showering with cold water when it's brisk outside that tells the 'gung-ho camping' tale.

I'm still pissed about letting girls into Boy Scouting, and I say that as an Eagle Scout with Silver Palm who attended a World Jamboree in Japan in '71 (when the yen was 360 to the dollar). There's something to be said for boy's spaces that allow those boys to grow into men.

247 After the burning times and re-building functioning society starts anew, co-ed instruction needs to go away. I can understand when schools were one room and teachers limited, but modern day public schools and universities and the military illustrate why single sex education coupled with aptitude testing and placement is the way forward. Female teachers, especially the crazy types, just treat boys as a species of defective girls. The feminization of everything is a huge part of dysfunction.

I watched it live, of course.

So, what did these two future Presidents debate, exactly?

1) A lengthy & SPIRITED discussion as to whether the uninhabited (IIRC) Pescadores Islands off the coast of China were inshore or offshore islands!

2) Kennedy said the U.S. was in danger because of a "missile gap"* with the Soviet Union. We needed more, said Kennedy. Nixon disputed that. As President, Kennedy later admitted that he'd been wrong about the supposed missile gap.

Behold, the Great Issues of 1960!

You can tell they are pretenders by their use of the word shrapnel. They mean fragments. Using the term shrapnel when you are referring to shell or bullet fragments is a sure way to get your Smart Military Blog™ Membership Card revoked.

Shrapnel is a specific type of artillery shell designed to air-burst and propel metal balls (usually called 'shrapnel') towards the ground, to injure infantry and cavalry in the open. In essence, a big shotgun shell that opens a long way from the firing location.

I won't argue with that. But keep in mind that, at least currently, boys and girls are separated in the regular Scouts. It's only the cubs that are co-ed. Girls have to have their own troop organizations. Many are "sister troops" to existing boy-only troops, and there are opportunities at organized events for the two to mingle, but the boys still have their own troop structure, leadership, and everything.

For parents who find themselves stretched thin across multiple children with too many activities already, having a single organization to work with like this can be a plus.

It is a different type of combustion, very efficient, and very safe. The fuel rate burn is very low, they sip the fuel compared to other types and no fans or thermostat required.

They produce a very even warmth, because ultimately they heat objects, not the air. The closest thing I can think of is floor heat, which is also very nice.

370 Even at 15 yds, with handguns, one is well advised to keep your eye protection on when steels are the target. Jackets fairly often get back that far. Usually not fast enough to cause a serious problem, but eyes .....

Once at my favorite now discontinued steels match, shooting a plate-rack up near a berm, RO behind me, I felt a jacket fragment hit my nose - and I felt the blood running down onto my lip. Didn't hurt at all. For fun, I just finished the rack, RO does his thing (clear, slide, trigger, holster), and I turn around.

Shock and "ooh!" from the RO and the small squad. Small bandaid, bleeding stopped.

I usually shoot lead (reloads), little problem with those, but jacketed bullets + steel is a combo that calls for prudence.

395 Centerfire *rifle* at 25 *feet*??!!!! Hard to believe that, it's so ridiculous. Even 25 yds is unsafe. Twenty five feet is absurd. Not safe even for handgun, don't think there's a range that would even allow rimfire at that range.

Steel target design and mounting are also important. Good ones deflect projectiles downwards and absorb some of the energy (they are spring-mounted or loose).

Absolutely. For sheer opulence they are pretty much unparalleled here in the US. And a great glimpse into how the great industrialists of the early 20th century lived.

Most are open as museums now and easy to visit and they houses are spectacular as are the grounds. Used to be a local charity that would sponsor Great Gatsby parties to raise money for local children's parties complete with period dress and bands and they were a blast. If you come now in the Fall you can do a Coffee and Cars with Jay Leno at one of the mansions many of the weekends.

Of COURSE, if you watch the trailer for the Netflix documentary, you might think that the company's biggest sin was the lack of "diversity" in hiring sales staff for their stores. They didn't allow a Muslim girl to wear a hijab at work! One black female was told, "We're not hiring you because of racial discrimination. We're not hiring you because you're not good looking enough." Which, in her case, is entirely accurate! "Good looking" isn't the same as "looking white, but with somewhat darker skin". She's just plain. Also joining in on the whining is some homely Asian girl with thick glasses.

Wonderful Voodoo scene in Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro), very authentic, or so it seems.

Cigar smoking, cotton-eyed priest summons the spirit of a recently deceased young woman, to possess the body of one of the voodoo celebrants.

It's a hell of a fine film. Obama first said he loved it, and then decided he didn't. Too much white involvement in the production; too much "exoticism."

How could a film set during Carnival in Rio NOT be "exotic"?

Vlad could be described as someone whose idea of a formally-appointed dinner differed somewhat from that of others, or as an early, if misdirected, sous vide enthusiast. I mean, those he impaled were defeated Ottoman invaders, ruthless criminals, boyars who got to be too big for their britches, or people who had pissed Vlad off that morning. Occasionally, he would have the wrong person impaled, and there would be great laughter and merriment, with Vlad slapping his head and saying, oh Vlad, you goofy guy, you wasted a perfectly good stake. Warnius, you up there, sorry about that. And Warnius would laugh as the sharpened pole pierced his last vital organs, saying, yes, my prince, you got me on that one. Could a priest may be found, that I could receive the last rites and gurrrrggllll. A chuckling Vlad would order a nice fruit basket for Warnius's family
