NYT: Trump Is Appealing to Young Male Voters and Their Defection Could Doom the Democrats
Recent data from the Harvard Youth Poll, a national survey I oversee for the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, reveals an increasing political rift between young men and women under 30, two groups critical to Democrats' success in recent elections. Almost exactly equal shares of young men and young women say they will definitely vote in this election or have already done so. But since the spring of 2020, the share of young men identifying as registered Democrats has dropped by seven percentage points, while those identifying as Republicans have increased by seven points -- a net shift of 14 points in just four years. Young women, during the same period, shifted two points away from the Republicans.This Toxic Liberal Sissy has a plan for attracting young men again. In four years, he cut what was once a 19-percentage point Democratic margin among registered young male voters (50 percent Mr. Biden, 31 percent Mr. Trump) roughly in half (48 percent Ms. Harris, 38 percent Mr. Trump) in our poll. His playbook? A master class in bro-whispering: championing crypto, securing the endorsement of Dave Portnoy -- the unapologetically offensive founder of Barstool Sports -- and giving U.F.C. President Dana White, who embodies the alpha-male archetype that appeals to many young men, a prime spot at the Republican National Convention. Mr. Trump has also cultivated relationships with simpatico comedians, pranksters, influencers and Silicon Valley billionaires like Elon Musk -- all while his team bombards podcasts and social media with misinformation and memes to rally his troops. This shift in support for Mr. Trump among men is neither organic nor unexpected. It's what happens when a well-coordinated political operation invests tens of millions of dollars to amplify Mr. Trump's narrative and weaken confidence in the party in power. Compared with when Mr. Trump ran in 2020, young male voters are now less likely to support government-backed climate change solutions (down 15 points, according to our poll) and affirmative action for qualified candidates (down eight points). They are more likely to question immigration policy (up 12 points), free trade (up 10 points) and whether government stimulus leads to economic growth (up seven points). They are also more likely to believe that religious values should play a more important role in government (up six points).
Here's one way. To reignite the hope of the emerging generation, Ms. Harris should make a sweeping national call to both military and civilian service -- name it the Generation Z Compact to Rebuild and Renew America. Such a plan would offer a sense of identity, community and patriotism, while providing economic stability and skill-building -- things many young men feel they are missing. Young Americans have consistently voiced support for national service programs, yet political action has yet to catch up.Young voters say a lot of things they don't believe because, as Kamala Harris announced, "they're stupid."
Really? Then why aren't they serving? The military has a recruiting shortage; if young people are so keen to serve, why don't they now? It's because people say a lot of bullshit they don't really believe. I guess this never occurred to this New York Times "expert."
A 2021 survey revealed that 71 percent of adults under 25 were open to participating in a service program. Even more striking, a poll conducted last year found that about 75 percent of young people backed mandatory national service. These numbers tell a clear story: Our youth's appetite for civic engagement is strong and growing.

She told me she thought it looked different. And, she liked it. I just said "thanks" and continued my wait in line.
She kept turning around to face me, and finally worked up the nerve to ask her question. "What do you think" she asked.
"Honest opinion?" She nodded. "You look like a complete idiot who decided to participate in some trend started by an even bigger idiot with a mean streak...knowing people like you would jump right on the wagon."

I can see that very specific sliver of GOTV working well. But when that's not the bulk of GOTV, it can't be definitional for GOTV. So, the entire bucket of GOTV vs. natural enthusiasm based on fundamentals (or whatever drives it), and I'm going to lean towards natural enthusiasm being a larger driver for swings in election proportions than GOTV.
Essentially, I don't think my model is anywhere near the point where it can be picked apart because...it's a mess and extremely, extremely rough. I mean, just showing the slapshod pair of Excel tabs would probably send you into fits.
I'm not risking that!
If I were to suddenly get hired by a campaign to refine it, I'd probably find a whole lot more. But when just thinking of the kinds of large percentage swings from one election to the next, registration numbers seems like the place to get most of the information regarding that movement.

This is called cannibalization, and the discussion about it on X has me frustrated with...everyone.
There are some numbers based on 4/4 recent election voters showing that in places like NC and GA, it's actually Democrats doing it more. But, the numbers are like 16.5 vs. 15.5. Not exactly a huge diff between the parties.
In order for the idea to hold merit, one side would need to be doing it far more than the other, and it just seems like both sides are doing it right about the same amount.
The only unknown right now is actually if the missing D voters (the pattern is not R overperformance but D underperformance) suddenly show up on Election Day. Which seems doubtful.

The dubious beneficiaries are the people put into impoverishment by the Obama and later administrations (Medicaid spending doesn't seem to improve individual health of those using it but makes them feel better about being covered) and those on the exchanges often face large deductibles and scanty doctor networks for care.
Oh, and illegals are getting Medicaid because if they claim citizenship or refugee status, they get ninety days by statute coverage plus emergency coverage. Many if not most states are simply ignoring the 90 day limit and letting illegals get free medicaid care beyond that of simple emergency care funding.

"National service" doesn't mean military, and I'm sure the poll made that clear. It doesn't surprise me that a large number of young people, brought up to believe their lives only really have meaning as part of the National Body, think that some form of mandatory service requirement (registering people to vote, handing out fliers at a festival, etc) sounds like a good idea. Especially if it's just in theory, and if they can get an exemption.

Last week Democrats were very concerned about their turnout ops in places like Pennsylvania. This week not so much. That tells me they are putting large ballot stuffing ops into high gear. Shapiro has made sure along with the other Democrats that none of that will be picked up. We need to keep playing this like we are 5 points behind. This is going to be about votes across the finish line. Democrats know that if Trump wins, their days of election fraud are over.

I will say this for Trump's signs:
The issue signs where the top half is Trump (Low Taxes/Low Prices/Safety/Closed Borders) and the bottom half is Kamala (High Taxes/High Prices/Crime/Open Borders) might be the most effective out there.
Quick, pithy, sending a message about both candidates in the major issues of the election.
I've seen one anti-Trump sign that seems to be doing something similar that said: "Trump's Tariffs = Inflation". Not quite the same thing, but it was structured similarly.
No idea if they actually work, but if there are yard signs that work, it's those.

I'm right there with you. Sure, I'm over 29 {cough, cough}, but if I weren't and I were in the marketplace for a mate, I would have no attraction of any kind to some soy-soaked wimp. I want strong, masculine, protective (innate instinct in me, I suppose). I couldn't be less attracted to an Alexander Soros or David Hogg if they were primordial ooze.

Abortion is the only issue Dems have. If this issue went away, the Democratic party goes away. I am libertarian on social issues...i don't care what you do, as long as I don't have to pay for it. If Republicans could codify abortion, limiting it to 12 weeks and not allowing public money to pay for it, it would put a fork in Democrats.
Evangelicals & devout religious Christians would need to get on board, but they can still be pro life. Like equal rights, Dems probably wouldn't vote for it, and after it passed they would still campaign that it's going to be taken away.

This is going on in probably every state in the US.
I know of a recent case in Arkansas for example involving abandoned mobile homes with multiple names listing that as a residence despite no one living there. The names there voted despite little evidence that these people actually exist.
In the old days, this was called the floating vote. and those doing that as floaters. They would liquor up their stooges and then take to visit each voting precinct to vote again and again until they were legless.
Edgar Allan Poe apparently got caught up in one such election day proceedings in Baltimore and ended up dying in the gutter because of it.

We used to keep ‘burnt’ oil in a barrel, soak the lower half of cedar posts in it, and build fence with them. Some I saw put in the hole in the mid-50s are still standing

Yard signs are both solidary examples (being part of a community declaration) and sometimes deployed as a bandwagon effect multiplier especially for down ballot races where candidate information can be scarce. They might move a vote here or there often based on neighbors knowing each other but not the same as personal canvassing.
Robert Heinlein wrote an interesting book on his experiences working with EPIC (Upton Sinclair's organization) as a field organizer and candidate himself called "Take Back Your Government" Has all you need about applied field work in politics circa California elections in the 1940s. Many of those techniques still work today.
Jerry Pournelle, former rocket scientist, author, and professor of political psychology, plus manager of Sam Yorty's successful run for LA mayor, did the forward for the current editions I think.

I feel lucky I was born when I was. Young women generally, almost universally took care of themselves, looked good, were pleasant to talk to but on the flip side didn't put up with sloth and vulgarity. You respected them.
There are outliers today [as always] but when I am out in public, at a grocery store, etc. I feel sorry for young men today. It looks like young women go out of their way to look bad and be unpleasant. Plus, if guys make some mistake in etiquette, their lives are ruined. So cheeto-eating, pron addictions, etc. become a reasonable low-risk choice. And ultimately lead to, well, catastrophe.

I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.

about switching to another platform. I have heard good things about blogengine.net.
