NASA's SLS/Artemis/Orion Moon program is a fucking joke. I was just reading the latest problems.

1) Orion capsule has heat shield problems. They discovered a bunch of cracks after the Artemis I mission. This has not been resolved.

2) Mobile launch platform is a mess. They had three of these things, crawlers and the platform itself. They went through several iterations from the Saturn V through the STS. Anyway, there's big problems with one now, massive cost overruns and delays. This has not been resolved.

253 Israel has a comprehensive plan for taking Hezbollah apart, and it appears they are working to it. With fantastic success.

This includes the financial aspect. Yesterday (ours) the IAF hit a dozen Hezbollah-linked banks and financial offices (after the usual warnings and evacuation advisories). And recall it was estimated that up to 2K tons of gold and zillions of $ were buried along with the Marshmallow Mullah when he got his in his bunker meeting.

So I don't think there's any connection between US idiocy and the hospital/treasure bunker thing. And if reported cabinet discussion is accurate, the Iran attack plan won't be altered by the hit attempt on Bibi, though a separate, additional leadership hit might now be on the menu.

The current Artemis plan depends on Elon and Starship anyway. The actual lunar lander is going to be a modified Starship, dubbed Starship HLS.

It will be launched separately, dock with something called the Lunar Gateway (mini space station in lunar HALO orbit), and the astronauts will transfer to it from Orion, and then descend to the Moon.

When you look at that mess, you see Starship could just carry them all there to begin with, no need for the SLS/Orion/Gateway. It's just stupid.

272 Was at a Perkins diner in South Sioux City. Buddy and I were in a booth; family of Indians (casino, not 7-11) at a table in his line of sight, not mine. He said the middle child, a girl, was tipping up the salt shaker to her lips, snarfing down salt, and then licking the shaker top. Repeatedly. I think one other child doing it a little, too. After the family left, Bruce suggested to the waitress that she might want to wash the shakers.

Some sort of pica, maybe?

280 And there are scattered, limited signs of anti-Hezb sentiment finally stirring in the rest of the populace. Some towns (Druze, Christian) barring suspected Hezb refugees, or hassling them. Today, reports that the generally useless (and comfortably paid and supplied, thanks to your tax $) Lebanese Army was preventing Hezb refugees from seizing houses in Beirut (outside Dahiyeh).

By "refugees" I mostly mean military-aged male members of Hezb, though they probably also have their families in tow in some cases. And you pedants may point out that they're "internally displaced persons," not refugees, as they haven't crossed a border - but thanks to massive IDP situations a few years back elsewhere, that distinction is a bit porous now, for int'l discussion and action relating to such situations.

The girls placed the popsicles and everyone stepped back to wait. 30 seconds later, a giant sewer rat ran out from under the building, grabbed a popsicle, and then ran back to cover.

To my great disappointment, the photographer did not run THAT picture!

392 Roadkill....

I was in my early 20's driving my god-daughter, her three sisters and their parents - my friends - from some event near Toronto. Al directs me down a paved but pretty rural road on the way home late at night.

I'm driving along. A creature appears in the middle of the road. I'm driving a vehicle with my dear six friends. I'm not going to risk their lives. A thud goes under the car.

I reassure the girls' everything is alright. I'm feeling crappy because I killed something. But that feeling doesn't last long as something darts across the road and there's ANOTHER THUD!

Everyone is safe. Which is my job. But I feel bad because my car of death just killed 2 animals in about 15 minutes. And I've only had a bird fly into my car once.

But two animals! Whatever they were. I couldn't believe it. But those thoughts are interrupted as a third something shows up in the road. Seven people in the car. There was no decision to be made.

A third thud! Three animals in less than an hour. I did feel bad. But I got my friend's home safe....job number one.

By comparison, and I can't be really sure, the per-unit Apollo Moon suit cost would be about $1.8M in near-current dollars (probably not 2024 dollars, but something near that).

They made about 60 of the suits total, and divide that into the cost of the whole spacesuit costs.

They used a clever sublimator heat exchanger on the Apollo moon units. It was self regulating. It used the sublimation of water vapor to shed heat. Little heat input and the thing would freeze over and not lose much water. As heat input increased, the sublimation rate would increase to match.

Still ridiculous but that includes all the one time research, testing, prototypes, tooling , etc costs averaged out for each suit built.

It's like how they state the cost of each F-22.

The actual build cost ( if they had not destroyed the tooling) is far lower than the 350 million a plane price they quote. That price includes all the pre build costs incurred.

At least that's how I look at it.

460 NASA’s $100 Billion Moon Mission Is Going Nowhere
The Artemis program years behind schedule and billions over budget should have taxpayers and presidents demanding answers. October 17, 2024 at 4:00 AM CDT
By Michael R. Bloomberg

To understand the level of wasteful spending, forget the $1 billion in spacesuits that have yet to be delivered. That’s pocket change compared to the rocket, called the Space Launch System.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s inspector general estimates the program has so far burned through $23.8 billion.

Each launch will likely cost at least $4 billion, quadruple initial estimates. This exceeds private-sector costs many times over, yet it can launch only about once every two years and — unlike SpaceX’s rockets — can’t be reused. >more

Tonight, for the first time ever, the RCP betting sites odds are Trump by +20 and change. On Aug. 19th, it was Harris +8 and change.

That's kind of looking to me like the collapse may have started.

I was in the hospital, giving birth. I was in an out of consciousness due to pain levels. They didn't want to give me anything for the pain because I already had a low platelet count and a high risk of hemorrhage.

During this time, I kept seeing my 'soul' dog who had died in 2021. He was truly more of a child to me than a pet and his death was incredibly traumatic. He was right near my face and telling me to make my choice. I could go with him if I felt the time was right, or I could stay and fight for my son. Yes, being married to Bill helped. Oddly, staying being married to Bill helped her more, much to my surprise.

But she would have had her own political career without Bill. Getting thrown off the Watergate Committee for being unethical was merely a Democrat candidate's resume fodder for a later run for some office.

I'm in the weeds reading about the details of the Apollo moonsuit thermal regulation. It's a lot more complicated than I thought (of course).

Problem that I hadn't thought about. A material good at reflecting direct sunlight doesn't reflect infrared. When lunar surface gets warmed up good, it's reradiating a lot of infrared....

523 When someone in the crowd yelled, Jesus is Lord, and Kamala said, "you're at the wrong rally, you want the small one down the street'. Pretty well sums up her association with Jesus and God almighty.

Interview up with Tucker and a fellow who has written a research book on her. When she was running for office in San Francisco she and her mother verified that they practiced Hinduism and all its rituals. She even likened herself to one of the Hindu goddesses. Which to a Christian would be a demon.

You're in no way responsible for their bad decisions.

And, heck, we don't know their lives. Maybe this was meant to be.

But I should let you know for full disclosure, that I spent a good chunk of the last several hours trying to prevent a brother and sister cat - not mine - from banging each other in the house....

But they make their own decisions. We don't know every bit of their lives. Go sleep comfortably, deeply and well.
