Gun Thread: Post TXMoMe Discussion and Analysis Edition!

102024 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! What a party! These MoMe's just keep getting better and better, and a wonderful good time was had by all! Actually, I am writing this from the airport in Washington on my way to the MoMe, but I can safely say based on years of MoMe'n that it's going to be an amazing success! Great people, great food, more great people, lots 'o shooting, ok enough of the people, and perfect weather. As the title indicates, please use this as a thread for discussing your TXMoMe experience as well as the usual guns 'n stuff. It's going to be a slightly content-lite Gun Thread this evening as it's time for me to bring my seat back and tray table to its full and upright position.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

43 So, range report: SiD's Highway Patrolman met and exceeded expectations. Fun revolver to shoot.

Then, on the rifle range, I failed with the Garand where Spawn and Scuba succeeded.

On the rifle side, I failed, but, in looking back, I know exactly where I failed and why. Dumb mistake and, maybe, at some point, I'll get it through my head: Always check zero! Probably should tattoo it on my forehead so it's the first thing I see in the morning, as a reminder. Sheesh.

84 Will somebody please tell Trump to not say stuff like "shit Vice President"?!

Look, there's nothing to be gained by using rough language at an event where everyone there is already voting for you.

All it does is give the media sound bites! I'm sure it's fun for him, but he's not there to have fun, he's there to save this country!! That's what he says, so he needs to act like that!

Talk about foreign affairs. Talk about the economy. Talk about whatever, but don't talk trash! There's no point in giving our enemies ammo to use against us. Just cool it for all our sakes, okay? You sound like you're feeling cocky.. don't feel cocky!

86 Not yet mentioned. weasel made the air all dusty during a ceremony. Someone will correct the details I get wrong I am sure.

Commenter redc14c (sp?) had sent some parts for a 1903 Springfield that he had sent to Jim, Sunk New Dawn. SND had promised to make those parts into a complete rifle and send back - but redc14c unfortunately passed away before this happened. weasel told this story along with some other 1903 stories and employed Spawn of Lin-duh to take the rifle which had been assembled and display it, Vanna White style, to the Hordians in attendance so we could see this tribute to internet friendship.

And then the big reveal - weasel presented the rifle to Spawn (for those who don't know a teenaged young lady who has some real shooting skills!).

A torrch has been passed. It was truly a moment that could only happen at the TxMoMe.

87 Did anyone ring steel at 1000?
Did Nurse pistol-whip anyone?

I missed the steel. See: lack of checking zero mentioned above. I was not happy with myself when I realized what I'd done.

However, there was another person there who hit steel, multiple times, who's name I cannot remember.

As for Nurse pistol whipping...umm, is this considered a regular occurence?

119 sra blaster really had a great time even though she is a lurker-by-proxy on this here blog.

We spent most of our time on the rifle range. sra blaster has a Mossberg Patrol which I had outfitted with cheap bipod and scope. It's carbine length barrel and polymer stock are not ideal for distance but she wanted to shoot some distance. What mama wants mama gets.

We had shot at 100 yards with this rifle and it is quite competent at that distance. sra blaster wanted to shoot 200 yards. Then when she shot that, she wanted to shoot 300 yards. That took a lot of time and ammo getting the aiming point right for it but we got it. So of course she wanted to shoot 500 yards.

And she did it!

Now she wants another rifle with a real scope and she wants us to start reloading so she can shoot 1000.

I blame weasel.

124 Got a Ruger Mark II 22LR semiauto pistol?

My bolt assembly, which I had never fully disassembled before, disassembled itself when it fell onto the bench while I was doing the screwball takedown of the weapon for cleaning.

Screwball meaning you gotta fiddle with the sprung lever on the backside of the grip, to be able to rotate the "handle" for the vertical bolt that fixes the inside bolt of the slide bolt.

The bolt assembly popped all its parts and the tiny tiny firing pin spring and its fixer tab end fell onto the floor, which I missed seeing.

I did not even realize I had a missing part until I watched a fourth video on the Mark II full takedown.

Stupidly, I thought I must have lost it long ago and the gun ran fine without it. No, that cannot be, I thought, maybe it just runs OK.

So I found a source for the tiny parts and ordered them.

But tonight, I went down to the bench in the basement and used the phone's flashlight, down on my hands and knees, and LO! There is the spring with its tab part insert.

Tiny parts. Like in a watch.

So the Ruger is now all together, cleaned and oiled. And I'll have some spare parts when they arrive by mail.

146 104 ... 50 caliber vs. 45 muzzleloader ...

A 45 will take deer if that is the purpose. The 50 caliber advantage is slight, sort of extra insurance. For target work either is fine. One advantage of the 50 is .490 round ball is a bit easier to find than than .440. (Typical sizes for each caliber.)

Do you know the make of the 45? Is it inline or traditional? Also, is the ignition reliable? Percussion or flint? I love muzzleloaders but a poor lock in a traditional style can be frustrating. Admittedly, I know nothing about inline styles as they have never appealed to me.

Late answer but little terminal difference between a 45 and 50 muzzle loader. Depending might be a tad more difficult to find 45 bullet and ball than 50 but that is about it.

Going down to 36, aka squirrel rifles, is a bit of a different matter.

Thanks also to RMBS and Pillage Idiot for being so generous with their time on the rifle range. My Ruger PCC had a lot of loose shit going on with its zero, but RMBS was able to help the handicapped by getting it zeroed at 50 yards. 165 So I guess I have to Hordesource sra blaster's Christmas present. She has given me permission to make this gift gun-related (this after a misguided attempt at a gun-related anniversary gift).

I am looking at a platform for her 1000 yard shooting project. She's not going to be on an F-Class national champion team but she liked the look of a precision rifle that was constantly dinging the 1k target in Corsicana.

Budget for rifle only is going to be about $1000 +/- and want to stick with .308.

Candidates so far:

Mossberg MVP Precision - our other two Mossberg rifles are MVPs and I like the mag interop on the MVP. However I don't think this is a current model for Mossberg.

Mossberg Patriot LR Tactical - current production I think has replaced the MVP. I think it maintains the mag interop of the MVP but need to verify.

Savage AXIS II Precision - have no experience with Savage rifles but weasel recommended the brand and this WEIGHS HEAVILY.

Any votes or suggestions?

167 155 Presumably the .45 muzzle loader's barrel twist is fast enough to shoot saboted rounds?
Posted by: Duncanthrax
=====
I think you have a decent range of 1:24 to 1:30 barrel twists that work with most sabots that long and heavy enough for good terminal effects.

Traditional modern barrel twist for the 45 was 1:28 to 1:30 I think but newer ones may have a faster twist.

Posted by: whig at October 20, 2024 08:10 PM (ctrM5)

168 Inspect the bore carefully. Very few know how to clean a black (gun)powder rifle or pistol and it is likely to be pitted.

The main thing to look at is what kind of projectile is anticipated to be used. .45 to .50 the Deer or Elk won't care too much. The law might.

Find out what brand - the number of turns or barrel twist rate may be suitable for a patched round lead ball, or perhaps more suited for a bullet or larger lead projectile. It isn't a show stopper or big deal or anything, you just want to know what you are looking at before buying.

True, for round lead ball you want the older slower twists up to 1:48. You can even just shoot those through smoothbores and achieve the accuracy that our Revolutionary Army did (at least those not shooting rifles).

FWIW, Most deer hunters for blackpowder that I knew shooting blackpowder season either fire sabots or Minie/conicals though that will take a faster twist. But state game laws dictate what you get to use and when.

Want to get sciency-- the Greenhill formula for optimal rifling twist rate gives you a starting point.

196 I've a Hawken. Built from a kit. Any cost-savings buy building kits versus factory built was long ago evaporated and this example by T-C was no exception. To be honest looking back, .50 cal is overkill for most things, and has a healthy appetite and tends to be heavy.

A .45 would be nice. I would like a .32 or something like that. Much more sedate. A Hawken with a 375 grain maxi-ball and 110 grains of FFG packs quite a wallop. For just plinking, I betcha the small caliber riffles are bunches of fun, and economical on Goex or Swiss or whatever your favorite genuine Black Powder might be. 210 Target practice and feats of marksmanship loomed large on the prairie and settlements back in the day. In the Army of the day, commanders would issue an extra Gill of Whisky to the winners of such impromptu shooting events. This was the skill they had to show proficiency at, hunting is tough enough - but to miss, when dinner was almost in the pot - well, better to be a crack shot when the time came in any event.

I don't know if anybody makes one, but a .32 cal "squirell gun" with about a 5 foot rifled barrel would be neat to get zeroed in and plinking. Once you know the "drop", you can put a bullet anywhere you want at quite long distances.

240 I'm pleased to see the praise for the 6.5 CR here as I got an inexpensive Ruger American bolt-action in that calibre [scope included too] for practicing for my Howa 6.5 CR 'precision rifle' [two 10-rd magazines and a free bipod!]; and also figured using it with its somewhat cheaper ammunition to get used to using a bolt-action rather than learning directly on my WW2 SMLE Mk III.

Posted by: Dave in Fla

Parallax is usually set at 50 yrds for rimfire and centerfire is 100 yds for a typical scope.

Posted by: whig at October 20, 2024 08:48 PM (ctrM5)

245 Context: 300 yards is 3 football fields away. And you hit a small target.
Just wait till you can do multiples of that.

Posted by: RI Red at October 20, 2024 08:49 PM (OKniM)

246 No, not really. The "Pennsylvania" or "Kentucky" rifle was about as tall as a man. Smaller calibers were common, again because of economics. More bullets to the pound, more shots to the powderhorn. There was no reason for overkill, and a smaller, lighter rifle could have the powder loads adjusted up or down very easily to the size of the game at interest. Something in the .32 range would be perfect for squirrel or rabbit all the way up to large game with a well placed shot.

254 Or .36 cal makes a lot of sense actually. The 1851 Colt "Navy" type, the Dragoons, etc. Now, you only have to stock one size of round lead bullet or ball. This was a big deal, when everything was shipped by train from them big cities back east all the way to Nevada or someplace like that.

.36 cal with a precision cut rifled barrel, about 5 feet long. Out of a pistol it looks pretty anemic, and has been compared to .380 but Wild Bill or somebody like that killed a man, Davis Tutt, with a Colt Navy revolver from maybe 100 yards away in a duel.

It's a stock Aero Precision Solus. You can get barreled actions fairly cheap, or completed rifles. Just don't buy from them directly. They prioritize their distributors so you'll be waiting a month or so before you actually get anything from them.

269 The breadth of knowledge, experience, and interests among the horde is astounding. A MoMe is a mini-graduate class of life. A Masters of Morons you might say. It would break the post count meter if I listed all the times I said "really?" or "wow" this weekend. I know it barely scratches the surface too.

Some chats were an inch wide but a mile deep and others were a mile wide and an inch deep. Some were cerebral and others were just irreverent and fun. I wish I could remember all the stuff that I was going to look up later, but I do remember the concrete battleship in Manila Bay which came after a discussion about military tactics around Fort Sumter. Which came after fracking and fossils, the Waffle House menu, home brewing, crochet, CBD's outfit, etc.

Most of the replicas that I have seen of the old black powder squirrel rifles had 32-36 inch barrel lengths. That might be close to the maximum barrel length before you start having the bullet slow down in the barrel from using black powder.

Flaiderman's Guide to Antique Firearms probably lists other common barrel lengths in the actual antique ones which often vary from the optimal barrel length due to the artisan, material available, and the customer.

I went to the range on Friday and because all of the pistol bays were occupied, I was shooting my Scorpion at 100 yards with a similar lack of success. One of the pistol bays finally opened up and I was able to get it squared away at 25-30 yards. 147gr HSTs and Ranger-Ts had similar POI and according to the LabRadar, similar velocities.

Figured I’d get it ready just in case things get a little sporty around here post-election.

326 Night y’all. Thanks again for a great weekend!

327 Thanks to Weasel for the weekly gub thread, read in it's entirety. The wisdom is appreciated.

And range report Pt2.....I was able to run several mags through my inexpensive M1911A1. Which is breaking in nicely.

329 I don't know whether Weasel-buddy reads the Gun Thread (he should), but if he does...or doesn't...thanks so much for bringing all of those great steels and equipment, and most of all being a wonderful and calm instructor!

330 I had the pleasure of letting a few folks take my rifle out to 1,000. I'm glad I could add to y'all's weekend!

Is Trex going to make you sleep on a subway grate tonight?

(Although, I suspect such a suggestion would result in a "medical emergency" on the scale of the asteroid strike that killed all of the other dinosaurs.)

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at October 20, 2024 09:56 PM (HlyYF)

Funny you should suggest a subway grate, because at this time Mr TRex is in NYC....so, I guess he gets the subway grate!

Actually, just as I was leaving this morning, I observed some disreputable looking characters rustling two of your cattle.

344 las, I had to forego any shooting this weekend. But at least I scored a Bullseye with a Springfield!

You did indeed and one that will ring for a very long time.

Posted by: Oddbob at October 20, 2024 10:04 PM (/y8xj)

345 Agree with Oddbob.

Jim SND definitely had the best "shot" of the entire MoMe!

A bullseye from Galveston to Corsicana is VERY impressive.

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at October 20, 2024 10:17 PM (HlyYF)

346 317 Even for those of us who, for whatever reason, couldn't make it, just hearing about the MoMe in the comments warms our hearts.
Good job, everybody!
