Evening and morning to all the satellites of AoSHQ across the Solar System and beyond! (Europa, Musk is coming for you. Just wait.)
'Tis cool this morning for the first time in months, 57 F. It's been so long, I dunno how to handle this. I ran the window A/C in its "Eco" mode and at 73 last night, with no fan to pull air into the bedroom, and was fine. Except for the guy who banged twice on my door at 9:30 pm, waking me up and scaring the hell out of me. I heard him shouting something incomprehensible as if drunk or stoned, and then what sounded like a motorcycle going away soon after. WTF, and brrr. If all the big companies keep laying off so many people . . . well, I don't know what will happen. Gangs of unemployed (and unemployable) coders roaming the streets looking for food? Cat-hunting alliances between Haitians and tech writers . . .? The mind reels.

TSMC is expanding operations in the US, hiring exactly the kind of technicians and engineers that Intel is laying off. So those people at least have somewhere to go. Posted by: Pixy Misa at October 17, 2024 04:14 AM (BLOW1) 12
Yikes, Wolfus!
At least drunk/stoned/ whatever... went away! Posted by: JQ at October 17, 2024 *** The last time something like this happened was in early 2006. Some drunk or druggie stood out on my lawn and shouted at me to come out. I called the cops, and he was gone by the time they showed. Both of these clowns had the wrong apartment, I guess. Still not good. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 17, 2024 04:15 AM (omVj0) 13

How did Kammie-Ha-Ha do on Bret Baier's show yesterday? I can imagine. Joe Concha said on Hannity yesterday afternoon that if her media appearances continue to stink as they have, she'll sink like a stone.

So since the kittens have become part of the household 15 days ago, their mother, who was to remain at their original rescue home had taken to going after the already residing there two other cats. She has been here with us since then but being very aggressive toward the kittens, and we have not been sure if this would work.
BUT, this morning was the first glimmer of hope that she and the kittens could peacefully co-exist in our house. Let's see how the next several days go. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 17, 2024 05:09 AM (a1415) 44

Germany is trying to ban knifes after some visitors from God know where have stabbed the local German citizens. But they have put so many lope holes in the law that it is mean-less. Restaurants can still give you a knife to cut up the meat (or near meat) and you can still carry, but expect to harassed by the cops for the little knife you carry if caught. I hope little boys can carry a pen knife like I did, and did until TSA cleaned out my supply.

I'm not so sure that most x86_64 operating systems are even scheduling correctly on newer chips with both performance and efficiency cores. Couple that with the fact that the entire used market for 13th and 14th gen chips is probably littered with defective chips, I've been limiting my linux box builds to 11th gen and older.

Musk proved that the social media companies can cut about 75% of staff and still thrive.
I imagine (without any facts) that Facebook etc were giant parties and social clubs where youngsters could hang out, play and get paid and no one cared about value creation because the cash flow was enormous. Like Trading Places, Eddie Murphy is now kicking out the hangers-on from the Mansion when he realizes it's his and he wants to take care of it. Random story about strangers banging on your door.
When I lived in the dorms, the guy who lived next door to me was constantly having parties. The problem was that his friends kept getting my room and his mixed up. So one night I'm entertaining my girlfriend at the time and we were interrupted by a very loud banging on the door. I am happy to say that the site of a half-naked man with a rather large knife in his hand saying "You got the wrong room" solved the problem permanently. It's pretty amazing how Harris is completely reneging on her side of the bargain.
Politicians can be a corrupt and venal and stupid and destructive as they like. We all know this. That's how it's always been. But you're not supposed to rub it in our faces. There's a certain noblesse oblige that the people require. Memorize a fact or two. Delegate some stuff to a person who actually looks like they know what the hell is going on. Make some kind of effort to at least *pretend* you're not a piece of shit, and that you care the tiniest little bit about deserving your sinecure. Americans deep down actually enjoy genuflecting to nobility. We just expect our nobles to play their role properly and get cranky when they go spoiled.
