The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Drones are the Gotha bombers or V2s or Viet Cong or the IEDs of the 2020s. Modern, well-equipped armies are having a difficult time dealing with their threats, counter-measures must be improved (or invented), and doctrine must change, otherwise those modern armies will continue to fire $100,000 missiles at $1,000 drones...right up until they run out!

And imagine if the Chinese become more proficient at drones in warfare! Swarms of cheap long range drones sent against our multi-billion dollar carriers, which can certainly handle the threats, but not indefinitely.

The information-gathering capabilities should not be minimized either. The recent Hezbollah attack on an Israeli base is a good example...a drone supposedly loitered for 30 minutes before its operator chose a target. That's is an impossible situation for any army, and one that must change.

But Man's ingenuity is rarely more impressive than when he is fighting, and the people doing the most fighting are at least aware of the problem.

Rafael expects Iron Beam laser to be active in 2025

Even Boeing is in on it, and apparently the door didn't fall off the laser during the test, so...

Boeing's 5-kilowatt laser weapon takes down heavy drones in landmark CLWS test

This seems to be a high-tech answer to a low-tech threat, but if it works...who cares! There are obviously lots of hurdles to overcome, and I wonder whether energy weapons will ever become mobile enough for a squad to use them.

Regardless, the arms race has begun in this category, and who knows how it will shake out. My guess is that it will be a mix of technologies combined with good old fighting sense on the part of non-coms and junior officers.

But for now, drones are a real threat, and as their stealth and range increase, so will their ability to disrupt previously secure operations.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched drone attacks on the world’s largest oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia and a major oil field Saturday, sparking huge fires and halting about half of the supplies from the world’s largest exporter of oil.

The attacks were the latest of many drone assaults on the kingdom’s oil infrastructure in recent weeks, but easily the most damaging. They raise concerns about the global oil supply and likely will further increase tensions across the Persian Gulf amid an escalating crisis between the U.S. and Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.

The attacks resulted in “the temporary suspension of production operations” at the Abqaiq oil processing facility and the Khurais oil field, Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said in a statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency. The fires “were controlled,” the statement said, and no workers were injured. . .

They refer to us as "empire" but it was otherwise direct, clear declaration of a goal to destroy us from within our borders. That's gotten me focused on how they are waging war here.

Shotguns and trap shooting are a good and legal hardware/software (training) solution for a Mad Max civilian situation. Even if the thing manages to keep flying--without damaged optics from even a light birdshot/trap load, it is functionally useless.

Laser pointers can be used to blind the sensors as well for citizen grade and some cheaper military grade type drones.

Camoflauge and or tall netting also makes it more difficult for the smaller drones to get close and personal like lowtech delivery of hand grenades, small explosive charges, etc.

Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape from Seres school of thought can be used a mental heuristic for the drone problem.

NEW: Taiwan detects record 153 Chinese military aircraft after drills
Taiwan detected a record 153 Chinese military aircraft around the self-ruled island, official data showed Tuesday, after China held a day of large-scale drills.

The aircraft were spotted in the 25 hours to 6:00 am on Tuesday (2200 GMT Monday), the defence ministry said in a statement — the most for a single day.

Beijing deployed fighter jets, drones, warships and coast guard boats to encircle Taiwan on Monday, with Taiwan responding by dispatching “appropriate forces” and placing its outlying islands on heightened alert.

Taiwan condemned China’s actions as “irrational and provocative”, and the US called them “unwarranted”.

Japan said Tuesday it had expressed its “concerns” to China over the drills, and scrambled fighter jets near its southern island of Yonaguni.

“The government is closely monitoring the related activities with great interest, and has conveyed Japan’s concerns to the Chinese side,” deputy chief cabinet secretary Kazuhiko Aoki told reporters.

134 India calls expulsion of diplomats from Canada ‘preposterous imputations’ driven by Trudeau’s agenda

New Delhi has vehemently rejected Ottawa’s claims Indian diplomats were linked to homicides, extortion and other violent criminal activity in Canada, describing them as “preposterous imputations” driven by the political agenda of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In a flurry of statements late Monday, India accused Mr. Trudeau of “smearing India for political gains” and ordered six Canadian diplomats, including acting High Commissioner Stewart Wheeler, to leave the country. This tit-for-tat response followed Canada’s own expulsion of Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and five of his colleagues, who have been linked to the June 2023 killing of Surrey, B.C.-based Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, whose murder in June 2023 near his home in Vancouver sparked a diplomatic storm between India and Canada, was a long-time campaigner for a separate homeland for people of his faith.

Nijjar was shot dead aged 45 by masked gunmen outside the temple he presided over after being wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism offences and conspiracy to commit murder — accusations he denied.

India has called allegations it was involved in his assassination “absurd”.

Pretty much too late. Widespread dissemination plus open borders in a lot of the world means smuggling if you try to ban it.

Pushbutton warfare has always had a certain fascination for some military planners because they already think of troops as "meat drones" anyway.

We no longer have the will or determination to do that. I got my first combat zone deployment back in the late 80s during the tanker wars when iran tried to close the gulf down for all oil tankers. We put a stop to that sinking or blowing up everything that iran had that floated. Once we did that they stopped fvcking around in the Gulf for decades.

And the RCP betting sites aggregation today has Trump ...wait for it... +10.8, a new record lead for Trump by FAR.

Here's what I think has happened to the betting sites. Bettors who took Harris were sitting on profits in August. Then the polls moved EVER so slightly toward Trump. These bettors then decided to cover their bets & take profits.

Now, bettors who had Harris but have losing open positions are starting to do the same thing, i.e., cutting their losses by closing out their positions.

Polls can & do wait to "get right" until the lost poll before the election. However, bettors can't DO that! If you wait too long, there's nobody on the other side to pick up your bets at any price. They're worthless. For example, think of all the Biden bettors who got caught with worthless bets after the debate. They couldn't cover their bets because the market collapsed.

Stupid people like Biden never think through anything they say--it is all posing.

You can take down an F15 cheap on the ground with simply putting fod around on the runway where it gets sucked up and destroys a very expensive engine.

Plus, aircraft is grounded for a time if Civil Engineering has to go out and sweep the runway or worse have a fod walk down the runway.

AF, as a technical service, never really took guerrilla action against air bases seriously--figuring that bases would either be in secure areas or worse, not really matter in a nuclear war.

In at least two instances--one in Korea, the other in Vietnam, airbases got attacked destroying and disabling planes and getting a lot of airmen killed. Afghani Taliban did something like that recently which shows the AF has not learned a damn thing about base security. It is a low priority training for them.

The problem with the standard block missile program is the military keeps demanding more and more capabilities every few years and that has caused the cost per missile to explode/skyrocket.

235 IDF, Shin Bet kill Hamas terrorist behind October 7 paraglider infiltrations
The IDF and Shin Bet have eliminated the head of Hamas’s aerial operations, Samer Abu Daqqa, the IDF announced on Monday.

Abu-Daqqa was a key figure behind the paragliders and drones used to infiltrate Israeli territory on October 7.

In September 2024, Israeli Air Force fighter jets, guided by Military Intelligence and the Shin Bet, targeted and killed Abu Daqqa. He had taken over the role after the previous leader was eliminated in October 2023.

Posted by: I used to have a different nic at October 15, 2024 11:48 AM (IUd0M)

You have baseball radars that are $100 to $200, YMMV, range is probably short, based on power source and intended usage. Next is ballistic doppler, $500-600ish.

Problem is not just range, which means power, but sophistication of the antenna and tracking and targeting algorithms. Most sophisticated radars use arrays of (100s?) antennas and can steer the radar waves by constructive and destructive interference.

Those antennas must be manufactured to precise tolerances and spacing, whereas the military already has tracking tech. Problem is one of scaling, data transfer, and coordination between stations, and it's probably not something you'd just want to leave lying around on the battlefield, which means you'd deploy it mainly in areas of high value, which means, not grunts, unfortunately.

Low tech nets are probably a better bet for the stationary grunt. Mobile? Sorry.

318 Autonomous drones are where it's at. The FPV operation is cool, the videos spank, but having a drone be able to fly to a target, engage it and then return to base makes all the jamming tech almost irrelevant.

Sure, the drone can be shot down, jammed or whatever. But the point is that it's an unmanned drone doing the attacking and the pilot(s) can be used elsewhere.

This is where our military is trying to go.

Leaving aside any sabotage from within which is not difficult, airbases require power, food, components to aircraft, and fuel deliveries which is not necessarily easy to do in a war zone.

SAS became legendary in screwing with Axis airbases with raids with not particularly sophisticated tactics. Fixed base security is a tedious job with most of the technical ground staff not being able to fight their way out of a paper bag. Thus reliance on a relatively small force that is trained using the rest of ground staff as ill trained cannon fodder. But, valuable cannon fodder in terms of technical skills to keep an airbase running.

Those assigned with defending such a target have the problem that the enemy knows where they are and can pick the best time and tactics to assault the base with a raid.

In some cases, it makes sense--you do not use a nuke on a fly for example. A lot of what the military has done is to secure trading or forestall enemies using a country as a launching pad. Aka teh Great Game.

US got into human rights and put small number of troops in places like Niger, Somalia, Lebanon, for various wooly headed reasons plus with an eye to deny those strategic places to various enemies of the US.

But, simply, we don't have the strength nor the willpower to actually pacify them like the old style empires tried to do by killing off a large part of the native populace.

So, we are what Jerry Pournelle called, an incompetent empire (trading like Athens, not Roman) and spread across the globe.
