As to Sardanapalus, he didn't exist. The name is probably a garbled Assurbanipal. Assyria didn't produce complacent kings; they went down fighting, against their hundreds of thousands of enemies.
Interestingly the Bible is better on this (violent and despotic) regime than the Greeks were; the Greeks were famously shit at Mesopotamian history, Xenophon not even recognizing Nineveh's ruin when it was literally under his nose (he called it "Larissa", wtf).

In this account, Sardanapalus, supposed to have lived in the 7th century BC, is portrayed as a decadent figure who spends his life in self-indulgence and dies in an orgy of destruction. The legendary decadence of Sardanapalus later became a theme in literature and art, especially in the Romantic era.

The name Sardanapalus is probably a corruption of Ashurbanipal[1] (Aššur-bāni-apli > Sar-dan-ápalos), an Assyrian emperor, but Sardanapalus as described by Diodorus bears little relationship with what is known of that king, who in fact was a militarily powerful, highly efficient and scholarly ruler, presiding over the largest empire the world had yet seen.

But yes, Ctesias was considered a subHerodotus joke even by the Greeks, although Diodorus used him. I understand that Ctesias gets better as he approaches his own time, which is the court of Artaxerxes II.
Xenophon and Ctesias probably met - on the battlefield, on opposing sides. Xenophon was a mercenary for Cyrus-the-got-himself-killed-so-not-III.

It's very different in setup, though not too much in tone, from the TV series. The vampires' characteristics are different, among other things. But the pilot of the TV series mentions Buffy being expelled from her last school for "burning the gym down" -- which happens in the movie. So it's not a direct prequel, but Joss connected the two anyway.

Neat, too, to see the young Luke Perry, and Rutger Hauer and Paul Reubens.
