9 Diodorus says that Sardanapalus, son of Anakyndaraxes, exceeded all previous rulers in sloth and luxury. He spent his whole life in self-indulgence. He dressed in women's clothes and wore make-up. He had many concubines, female and male. He wrote his own epitaph, which stated that physical gratification is the only purpose of life.

31 Oooh that's a classic. I remember it from the cover of Tim Callahan's Bible Prophecy: Failure or Fulfillment?.

As to Sardanapalus, he didn't exist. The name is probably a garbled Assurbanipal. Assyria didn't produce complacent kings; they went down fighting, against their hundreds of thousands of enemies.
Interestingly the Bible is better on this (violent and despotic) regime than the Greeks were; the Greeks were famously shit at Mesopotamian history, Xenophon not even recognizing Nineveh's ruin when it was literally under his nose (he called it "Larissa", wtf).

40 According to the Greek writer Ctesias, Sardanapalus (/ˌsɑːrdəˈnæpələs/ SAR-də-NAP-ə-ləs), sometimes spelled Sardanapallus, was the last king of Assyria, although in fact Aššur-uballiṭ II (612–605 BC) holds that distinction.

Ctesias' book Persica is lost, but we know of its contents by later compilations and from the work of Diodorus (II.27). In this account, Sardanapalus, supposed to have lived in the 7th century BC, is portrayed as a decadent figure who spends his life in self-indulgence and dies in an orgy of destruction. The legendary decadence of Sardanapalus later became a theme in literature and art, especially in the Romantic era.

The name Sardanapalus is probably a corruption of Ashurbanipal[1] (Aššur-bāni-apli > Sar-dan-ápalos), an Assyrian emperor, but Sardanapalus as described by Diodorus bears little relationship with what is known of that king, who in fact was a militarily powerful, highly efficient and scholarly ruler, presiding over the largest empire the world had yet seen.

That is the problem with self-indulgence. Look at modern liberals, always chasing that next pleasure, kink, or thing to tear down. They are not just evil, they are bored. They want to feel something and not matter what they try, how deep they go, they keep ending up empty.

65 An alliance of Medes, Persians and Babylonians challenged the Assyrians. Sardanapalus stirred himself to action and routed the rebels several times in battle, but failed to crush them. Believing he had defeated the rebels, Sardanapalus returned to his decadent lifestyle, ordering sacrifices and celebrations. But the rebels were reinforced by new troops from Bactria.

Good one.
But yes, Ctesias was considered a subHerodotus joke even by the Greeks, although Diodorus used him. I understand that Ctesias gets better as he approaches his own time, which is the court of Artaxerxes II.
Xenophon and Ctesias probably met - on the battlefield, on opposing sides. Xenophon was a mercenary for Cyrus-the-got-himself-killed-so-not-III.

That is the problem with self-indulgence. Look at modern liberals, always chasing that next pleasure, kink, or thing to tear down. They are not just evil, they are bored. They want to feel something and not matter what they try, how deep they go, they keep ending up empty.

I'm going through Isaiah, written around that time, for a Bible study and the prophecies about war (and the chronicles about when the prophecies come true) can get pretty depressing. There's often a message of hope, but that's usually for the faithful Israelites.

Trump had a town hall in Pennsylvania tonight, consisting of pre-screened questions moderated by Kristi Noem.

He abruptly cut off the event, then spent 30 minutes simply standing on stage looking at his audience with music playing. Ave Maria played 4-5x.

No explanation of why.

CR @ClintonReedy
Actually they had two separate medical events that threw the cadence of the town hall completely off, and Trump even OFFERED (Had you been watching) and he said “or we can play a couple more songs and just have a good time” at which point the crowd erupted and said let’s play YMCA and play it loud and they enjoyed themselves..

171 The latest "thing" the Left is trying to hit Trump with:

Trump sways and bops to music for 39 minutes in bizarre town-hall episode. This is AFTER two medical emergencies in the audience.

Acting completely senile isn't a good way to attract publicity. This is an October surprise. Sanewashers will be vewy vewy busy tonite.

So, he stands there and dances to The Village People while there are medical emergencies in the audience? Does he have no idea what the song "macho man" means, nor who the Village People are.

High ratio if antivax w MAGA, so there are likely a lot if walking wounded long COVID patients in his typical audience. I'd bet that is the root of these emergencies.

Washington Post headline 25 minutes ago-- Trump plays music instead of taking questions at town hall. Then there is a 1 minute video of the fool -- and the white wing governor who shot a dog -- that makes him look like he's on serious drugs and unable to continue.

They will be the destruction of society, period.

Look at any movie that depicts shithole situations, Robo Cop, Total Recall. That is liberalism at it's finest until it's defeated in the end.

It's very different in setup, though not too much in tone, from the TV series. The vampires' characteristics are different, among other things. But the pilot of the TV series mentions Buffy being expelled from her last school for "burning the gym down" -- which happens in the movie. So it's not a direct prequel, but Joss connected the two anyway.

Neat, too, to see the young Luke Perry, and Rutger Hauer and Paul Reubens.
