What a superstar! And here are some thrilling temporary animal companions Hrothgar thought we would appreciate:
A 38-year-old woman collapsed and died after being bitten by one of her children's pet hamsters. The mother-of-two reportedly collapsed while outside a health centre near her home in Spain while accompanied by her two children, a 17-year-old and an 11-year-old.Cause of death was not released, but there have been very rare cases of deaths from rodent bites due to severe allergies. Might be best not to have pet rodents if you are allergic to them. Epi pens may be a good idea. Thank all of you for the help with my friend's cats, Trumpy and Snowflake, whom are making themselves more and more at home. Trumpy is upstairs sleeping on my bed now with cat tv on. Thank you Wolfus for your help. I have read your posts on the ONT when I've had questions. I appreciate that. Thank you. Last night was a crazy night. How can I stop the cats from jumping on the counters and kitchen table? They've been pretty good most of the time in the 19 days of our experiment but yesterday was nuts. Spray bottles were suggested to me. It seems a little cruel but ground rules need to be established. Especially after yesterday. Thanks everyone. I went out back this morning with the dog. I always check the porch for Creamsickle, so I can keep jake away from the area. Didn't see him so I let Jake wander around. Went over to sit down and happened to notice the blck and brown cat on the back shelf. I saw this one last week. It might be a pregnant female and I think it is the one that eats everything at night.

Posted by: Stateless at October 19, 2024 03:37 PM (jvJvP) --- You really can't stop cats from jumping on counters and tables. You might prevent them from doing it when you are around, but they'll happily do it when you are not around. It's instinctive behavior to find a high place and counters/tables are what they like to use for that. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at October 19, 2024 03:57 PM (BpYfr) 28

Double-sided sticky tape and pans placed so they fall wouldn't really be good ideas. My elderly mother has a heart condition and I don't want things scaring her like that. Posted by: Stateless at October 19, 2024 03:57 PM (jvJvP) 29

Posted by: Notsothoreau at October 19, 2024 03:49 PM (gfViB) ---- Possibly applies to humans too. I am never bothered by fleas since moving back to the USA. My younger daughter, OTOH, is a flea magnet. Back in Africa in my 20s I did have a lot of flea bites from our neighbor's. Maybe different variety of fleas? I fixed the bites with a cotton ball soaked in a mixture of alcohol, ether and ammonia. Stopped the itch, neutralized the saliva and also killed fleas on my legs really well if I caught them at work. A companion parrot is a parrot kept as a pet that interacts abundantly with its human counterpart. Generally, most species of parrot can make excellent companions, but must be carefully managed around children and other common pet species like dogs and cats as they might be hostile towards them. Species of parrots that are kept as companions include large parrots, such as amazons, greys, cockatoos, eclectus, hawk-headed parrots, and macaws; mid-sized birds, such as caiques, conures, quakers, cockatiels, Pionus, Poicephalus, rose-ringed parakeets, and rosellas; and many of the smaller types, including Budgies, brotogeris, parakeets, lovebirds, parrotlets and lineolated parakeets. Some species of lories and lorikeets are kept as pets but are quite messy, (flying squirt guns)

Did You Know?
Ivermectin makes a pretty effective flea and lice treatment for pets and humans as well as a host of nematodes and other critters like mites. It is contraindicated for "white foot" breeds of dogs or herding types. Be sure to check with your veterinarian. For people and affected pets, the contraindication has something to do with defects in the blood/brain barrier. Ivermectin is not safe for turtles. Do not give Ivermectin for your turtle. Other than that, it is as safe as anything can get and inexpensive, and widely available. The thing with some of these parasites, they have a life cycle that is say, around 2 weeks. So if you successfully treat the infestation, a follow up is necessary to eradicate their spawn, as well. Posted by: Weird Wild Wonderful Stuff at October 19, 2024 04:25 PM (WsJzn) 45

I went to get my car washed in Tampa many years ago. While waiting, I saw some tough looking biker looking dude. Had the tats, outfit, everything. Right out of central casting stereotype. In his hand was a leash. At the end of the leash was a tiny, cute, kitten, just chillin' under the bench. It was funneh! Nice tiny kittuh. Came out and let me pet her. Dude said it was his girl's cat. Little did he know that little kittuh had already entrapped him to her spell.

We have a feral cat younger daughter became buddies with and wife fell in love with and just had to have when she found the cat was bound for rehab and we ended up with it. I lost my beloved Elizabeth (AKA Dizzy Lizzy), a consummately gorgeous black lab who was my constant partner after my wife. I've never bonded with a dog as Liz and I did and it hurt terribly to lose her to untreatable cancer. That was shortly before Mr. Boo arrived. He went from feral to Mr. Lover in a 2 month span. I tolerate him though he seems to have decided to be mostly my cat. Man could do worse, I suppose.

As for ferals, the tortoiseshell with white tail tip who has been coming around in the evenings for food is still doing so. She won't come up to me, but sits and waits within eye range until I put the dry food down on the stoop and retreat indoors. Last night she came up near the screen door, but hesitated to head for the bowl because I was standing on the other side.
I'm giving her some of the indoors cats' leftovers, i.e., the dry Purina One left in their dry food bowl. It may be leftovers, but it's still high quality cat food. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 19, 2024 05:24 PM (omVj0) 63

Stateless, I used to worry about the cats on the counters, and then I realized unless I wanted to guard my kitchen at all times, they were going to get on the counters anyways.
At least they are out from underfoot, are small enough to move if I need that spot, and they remind me not to leave things on the edge where they can be knocked off. Eventually they will get old, and won't be able to reach the counters anymore, and then you will feel sad.
