Sunday Overnight Open Thread (10/13/24)The TXMoMe 2024 Was Absolutely Fabulous Edition

sm-morning-motivation-20240924-1008.jpg

*****

The 9th Annual TXMoMe was an absolute fantastic event. As always Cow Horse Queen, Rancher Bob and Ben Had went over and above for their guests, we Morons who attended.

The weather was fantastic. The food was even better. And no one can complain about about rifle and handgun ranges?!?!?!

The Fabulous and I really enjoyed our time at the MoMe. It was great to see our old friends and to meet new. If you haven't attended this affair you really should.

Stating the Patently Obvious: Lithium Ion Batteries Fires Are a Problem
You know how awfully fond I am of the lithium-ion battery stories. Sometimes, the ones I've covered have been semitrailers full of them overturning and lighting off, or a warehouse full, or - more menacing - a battery storage facility close to residential areas that suddenly goes thermal, and evacuations ensue.

47 It occurs to me that if we win, we desperately need the Voting Rights Act of 2025.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed because Congress felt that Southern states couldn't be trusted to manage their own elections - the Act placed considerable restrictions on what Southern states could do electorally, and subjected those states to considerable Federal oversight of their elections (which I believe continues to this day).

It's clear that Blue States can't be trusted to manage their own elections - the need for an appropriate Voting Rights Act now to address that is far greater than it was sixty years ago.

Some ballots do not vote straight ticket! You may vote straight R and not vote top of ticket (President). Vote each race down the ticket all the way. Remember, this election is being gamed to the max by the left. Drink your coffee, be alert, read the propositions, if any. They intend to cheat, at every turn, be aware! When Australia legalized CB radio, Dick Smith lobbied to make it 18 channels. This was done to make it so Australian companies wouldn't have to compete against their American counterparts. It worked, and the Australian companies immediately outsourced their manufacturing to the same Asian factories the Americans were using.

I voted today as well. Even in blue states, helping Trump get a majority of the popular vote is important, and would be utterly hilarious.

You're making it too complicated. Marion County voted for Trump in 2016, and Biden only won by one percent in 2020.

Oregon politics is very simple - on almost every controversial candidate or issue, Multnomah County (Portland) votes one way, the rest of the state votes the other way, and Portland wins, due to the North Korean-level margin of votes for the Left coming out of Portland.

209 Trump working the fry station and the pickup window at Micky-D's is absolute genius level, Nth dimensional chess campaign strategy. It functions as both a troll, as retail politics, as well as a humanizing or normalizing Trump, the billionaire, as a "regular guy" - not to mention the "service" aspect as symbolic of his being a president who serves the people (much contrasting him with almost all recent inhabitants of the White House not named Donald R Trump). Plus lefties are going absolutely ape-sh*t insane over it. The Harris campaign has no answer for this and if it tried to do any kind of event like this over the next week or so before the election they would look even more idiotic and fake than they already do.

Absolutely bad*ss.

Yes, but only if they are certified for flight. Li-ion batteries above a certain size (I forget how many W-hr...80 maybe?) are not certified for flight unless they pass a very strict thermal runaway test that basically no commercial laptop battery is going to pass. As for smaller batteries, they are required to complete lot testing including destructive tests.

259 Cleveland, NY, 1990s I think.....

My sis and her SO were volunteers at the local fire station. To enhance fundraising (bingo, etc..) they built a meeting hall attached to the station itself. Their insurance demanded a fire proof wall between the two or their insurance be doubled. They went with the wall.

6 months later, their hall caught fire hours after a volunteer meeting. Apparently a smoldering cigaret in a trash receptical.

Btw - while popular bingo never really brought in the money they hoped. After ten years they ended it when they discovered the volunteers who had been running it had been skimming.

260 I never worked at McDonald’s. But I worked some shitty fast food jobs in my teens. My wife did work at McDoanlds, 2 of them in HS and in college. It’s the quintessential American story for a middle class kid.

This cvnt lies about it because of course she did. She grew up in a life of privilege and wouldn’t be caught dead inside a McDonalds let alone working in one.

Trump on the other hand also grew up rich. But he’s a regular guy at heart who loves him a Big Mac. Right there is the difference in a nutshell between the two of them.

And it backfired for her, badly.

You know who'd not only turn down a blowjob, but run screaming from the scene of the crime? Some 19 y/o, just outta high school, first "supervisory" job that some kid ever had, he's already barely hanging on to DO and LEARN the job at the same time, ain't quite got his feet under him as any kind of a "leader". And here comes this sexually suggestive, unknown threat of the dangerous kind.

And he's never had much more than a wet kiss from his Jr. High prom date, and is kinda inhibited, to begin with.

A mistake she'd only make, once. After which, she went for Senior Managers some 2x her age.

304 "Certified for flight" and manufacturing lot testing - cherry picking really - isn't anything new or certainly not unique to anything really. NASA famously ordered eleventy gazillion (a precise technical term) of a certain then-knew transistor. One, because they really did need a whole metric crap pile of them, and Two, because they wanted to ensure the manufacturer was incentivized to make a metric crap pile of them, and Three, they would reject maybe 80 per cent of them or whatever and only use the best or closest to the design center characteristics they wanted.

These conditions here make for near ideal radiative cooling at night, giving those sharp temp drops. Also creates a hell of an inversion layer at the surface.

That gets my cousin excited, because one of his first jobs at the NWS after he got out of the Air Force back in the day was some sort of pollution thing, SO2 levels at some power plants.

Inversions, and the resulting effects in the morning can cause surface concentrations of SO2 to rise. His job was to forecast that.

He laughs about how the power company said, no pressure or anything, but if you're wrong with your forecast conditions, and we overshoot our SO2 levels, we'll get fined so much.

And later (I think this was in Alabama, I think), some power company officials casually mentioned how many million dollars it would cost them per degree F error in the 10 day average temp forecast.

[Trumps GPS rally data indicates, besides the yuge number of attendees, that the majority of attendees came from the general area of all his rallies.]
...
if we take a look at the same GPS data related to Kamala Harris rallies some questions start arising here ... the Rawhide rally (that’s a name for a Harris rally isn’t it) it was October 10th in Arizona, only about 4,300 devices showed up for that. Only 531 of those devices were from Arizona. That’s less than 3% of the attendees that were at that rally who were actually from the state that the rally was being held. 92% percent of those devices have been found at three or more Kamala Harris rallies.

... September. September 12th, Kamala did a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina. Only about 5,000 devices showed up for that [rally]. … and it appears that 3,600 devices … nearly 70% of the devices there were bussed in from Georgia, maily Atlanta and 720 of them from Savannah.

September 30th , Las Vegas about 7,000 devices were there, 834 of them were from the Las Vegas area. What is that? +/- 1%?

Dust devils are mostly "cute", but they can get pretty strong sometimes, up to 60MPH wind speed. I remember I got in a pretty strong one plowing in a field years ago. The thing developed right on top of the tractor. It was cute at first, then got sort of scary.

It's possible the heat and rising plume from the tractor helped seed the start right there.

Dust devils are little heat engines, just like hurricanes, but small scale. You get a little parcel of rising air due to conditions, which creates a pressure gradient. Surrounding air moves in. The tangential velocity of the surronding air gives angular momentum, which is conserved. It spins up as it gets tighter around the rising plume.

Last year, there was some incident at a church where they had set up some of these inflatable playhouse things for the kids. A strong dust devil developed and blew those things around, and injured some of the kids.

404 MEGA MILITARY CONTRACTOR CAUGHT FAKING SATELLITE DATA TO TAKE DOWN STARLINK

SpaceX just exposed a dirty ploy by Lockheed Martin and Omnispace [provides global voice & data comms using a hybrid network of satellites and terrestrial 5G.] to block Starlink’s direct-to-cell service.

Lockheed’s partner allegedly rigged their satellite to fake interference & filed bogus FCC complaints, trying to stop Starlink from dominating the 5G space.

In a FCC filing, SpaceX revealed how Omnispace manipulated its MEO satellite to “intentionally detect” Starlink signals—despite the satellite barely being operational.

SpaceX [said] claims ... “bizarre,” accusing Omnispace of creating “artificial conditions” to fake interference.

...Omnispace refused standard coordination talks and went as far as licensing through Papua New Guinea to dodge regulations.

It’s ... part of an effort to sabotage Starlink’s $34.9 billion future in global communications.

Will the FCC [honestly investigate], or will Lockheed’s shady tactics derail Starlink’s revolution?

🇺🇸U.S GOV FORCED SPACEX TO KIDNAP BABY SEALS FOR A COMPLIANCE EXPERIMENT

In the ongoing saga of stupid government regulations...

SpaceX was once forced to “kidnap” a seal and subject it to a strange experiment as part of regulatory compliance.

Concerns over how the sonic booms from Starship launches might affect seals near the Vandenberg site led SpaceX to strap a seal to a board, put headphones on it, and play sonic boom sounds to monitor its distress levels.

The experiment was conducted twice, and the seal reportedly stayed calm during both tests.

YOU'RE KIDDING. We could have gotten together for sushi and other things! omg. Yeah, I'm here visiting old friends. Arrived October 14, leaving tomorrow (the 22nd). Bummer that we missed each other. I don't want to go back to my dumb job, wish I could keep hanging out here forever although the social life and nightlife are half what they used to be thanks to Covid.

No - not kidding! I reached out but we missed each other in the threads and I left the next day. Yes - would have happily shared some soju with you.

If you want to stay in Asia a bit - why not pop down to Singapore? I'll be happy to show you around. You can always use the "Contact the Gweilo" tab on my website to get in touch with me - access it through my URL.

Cheers,

We came downstairs to find our son Jasper watching the news with tears streaming down his cheeks. We pleaded with him to tell us what was wrong and when he was finally able to speak he said, “Elon Musk is encouraging people to support free speech and that is election interference and we are practically Nazi Germany now.” Even the kids get it. 😢

431 Morning, fellow insomaniacals! I'm glad to hear the TXMoMe went off without a hitch and that everybody had a grand time. Maybe I can make it next year!

And I see I made the top ten commenters list for the week of 10/13. I wonder what made me such a busy little porcupine . . .?

So... "Jasper" is "Che-Che" after its transition?

Posted by: JQ at October 21, 2024 03:34 AM (njWTi)

435 Anyway! I'm up earlier than I planned thanks to a nightmare. For some reason I was still driving my 1984 For Escort sedan, a piece o' crap of ever there was one. Apparently I worked in the downtown area (this city, or another?), and found a legit parking place on the street about two blocks from my office. At my office, on my email (a mailing list, if you can believe it), I found a list of jokes about Ford Escorts. I knew I had a bunch more of them on a sheet of paper in my trunk (?). So I went downstairs . . . and could not find my car! I rushed up and down the two blocks near my office, and the white Escort was . . . gone.

I ended up going into a department store nearby and asking if anybody had seen my car. They looked at me like, "What asylum did you escape from, bro?" And I was trying to dig up the license and registration numbers to call the police with, when I woke up. Weirdly, I knew in the dream that the car was forty years old -- so the me in the dream was in the present day, and I'd had the car (for some insane reason) since it was new. In real life I did keep it for seven years, but only because I could not afford anything else.

436 Happy Monday to you too, JQ! After my nightmare of somehow losing my forty-year-old car, I'd hope the real Monday will be an improvement.

437 Dreams are so weird, and sometimes comical!

Funny that it's so easy to get distracted from The Point in those odd dreams, isn't it?

I had a chebby Cavalier for almost 25 years. Great lil car, but began to nickel & dime me to death. Haven't had any dreams about it since selling it, though...

I traded the white Escort in on an '89 Olds Cutlass coupe in the fall of 1991. The dealer's idea of service after the sale was a bottle of touch-up paint . . . but the car turned out to be a winner in every department, quick, comfortable, and reliable. My next car was the same model, a '94. I told people at the time, "It's like remarrying your ex-wife, except she's changed her hair color, lost some weight, and learned a few new tricks!"

440 And I have to decide if I'm up to working out this a.m. Yesterday was a solid 1.5 mile turn at the 1/5 mile track near my house, and I felt great all day. Still do, except for my usual morning soreness in neck/shoulder and lower back. Stretching and a mild workout should alleviate it. But so would smoking a short pipe while sipping coffee. Decisions . . .

LoL, maybe. Hard to tell if that's satire or reality.

444 I had a 94 Chevy Cavalier about 12-13 years. The thing was boring and dull, but it ran and ran. No issues till the last year or so.

The thing is that the workouts make the sedentary activities possible, in the long run. (Pun gleefully intended.) If I don't stay at least reasonably active, eventually I won't be able to move off the couch. In the early '70s, after high school, I gained some weight -- about 25 lbs. Always I was tired and hot, didn't fit my clothes, and was not getting cast in any college plays. With the help of the book Aerobics by Ken Cooper (one of the great motivational texts) guiding my exercise, plus a more sensible diet, I lost that 25 and have generally kept it off since.

446 Mine was a '96. Like you said-- it ran and ran. Loved the 5 speed stick! Got great mpg. Best at 75-ish, handled well except got a little squirrely between 80-85, smoothed back out at 90. Hahaha.

After 20 years, it started having issues. I worked on it myself... not bad for a girl... but finally figured I better get rid of it before it blew up.

448 That's how I found out about Tangerine Dream: reading movie credits!

I like techno/jazz/new age stuff, generally.

I've never kept a car that long. The Escort, weirdly, was the longevity champ, but only because of finances. As soon as I could buy better, I did. Others have hit five years with me, but not much longer. After more than five, the current big Buick is still wonderful, and I'm hanging on to it because of my retiring, moving, and house-buying plan. But it would be a hard car to replace anyway. Buick doesn't make sedans any more, and prices are insane even for used.
