Global Warming Cafe

kosislandgreece.jpg
Kos Island, Greece, by George Papapostolou

Muh Global Warming!

Enjoying some Science with junior.

Now these lions are out of control!

Three whales breaching at the same time. I think they did it as part of a TikTok challenge.

A new clip of the anteater family excursion.

This cat's feet and ass look like a tribute to Che Guevara. Or maybe Paul McCartney from Yellow Submarine. I don't know. It's definitely a face and it's freaking me out.

Absolutely irrefutable, 100% convincing proof that Bigfoot exists is finally here.

Don't be bothered by the deliberately shaky camera. It's just that Bigfoot is actually blurry in real life. It's some kind of defensive adaptation.

Dogs can play with the automatic ball-throwing machine all day and be content.

German shepherd showing off for the little dogs.

Important diplomatic conference.

The fable is 100% accurate!

Data is messed up on Wunderground for the station there for a while, and I was afraid it had lost the Friday morning data it sent up to the power loss.

It's last transmission to Wunderground was around 6AM, about an hour before the Two Hours of Terror here began.

Console shows a lowest pressure of 29.91" before it went off line. Last Wunderground low was 29.92".

Posted by: AlaBAMA at October 03, 2024 08:27 PM (aPY1X)

76 >> by spin ups, you mean catspaws for possible tornadoes?

They use "spin up" to describe this short lived vortex (but can be strong) that can happen in these storms. It's not a tornado proper such as they define it.

"Gustnado" is sometimes used when this happens with big tunderstorms. Downdraft gets to spinning.

These are very difficult to spot on radar.

77 It was at that point that I realized, this is ALL ABOUT MONEY.

These ‘preferred vendors” are getting part of the money being released by the state and federal govt for each disaster. In turn, some of the “vendors” make it on the list because a friend gets them on the list, and in return for getting ridiculously outlandish amounts of compensation for the services they render, they give kickbacks.

So accepting outside donations, even though they are on location and can help people NOW, they would rather let people suffer so they can get their kickbacks.

Cousin is forwarding me some of their discussions about these possible spin-ups. He's talking to the guy who used to his #2, and took over after my cousin retired.

I don't understand the jargon enough to know, but here's what was last said:

There wasn't anything suspicious on radar...although to be fair dealiasing errors were (understandably) bad. ACARS soundings showed 100 kt winds just off the surface, and there were a number of small scale convective elements within the broader rain band/remnant eyewall as it surged through between 10-13Z. So...we're leaning toward convective mixing of that higher momentum air. But, we're still trying to piece everything together. (Not to mention that we did have several tornadoes the previous day that we haven't had time to survey.) It's a mess.

If I can hazard a dumb guess about what that means.... Very high wind speeds, 100 knots, higher up, but still close to surface. Some "convective driven mixing" occured which drove that high speed air down to the surface.

It had enough momentum to keep speed up.

So, small pockets of high speed air hit the surface, rather than spin-ups.

108 Been through many hurricane/tropical storms here over the years in Currituck County, NC. About 20 years ago, we were experiencing a minor hurricane, which by the time it arrived here, was down to about 72 MPH. So we were breathing a sigh of relief. Knew we could still lose power, but it wouldn't rip the siding off the house. My son went outside to watch the storm on the back steps under the overhang. Sudden big roar of wind. A large maple branch shears off and hots the power line, pole, then overhang. He comes flying in the door like a shot. Didn't rip out power line, but cracked pole and knocked overhang askew. That wind was clocked at 105 MPH by the county airport. Straight line winds can spin up quickly.

Dorcus is a genus of beetles in the stag beetle family Lucanidae. Of the over 100 species, most occur in Asia and India; two are found in southern Europe, and two species are from North America. Previously, specimens with serriform teeth on the mandibles and sable pigment were called Serrognathus whereas specimens with but a singular or multiple bulky notches on the mandibles and lustrous sable pigmentation were called Dorcus

First thing I think of now when I hear the name Boris Johnson is how he buggered the possible peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, early on.

Nato and the war machine didn't want it over. They wanted it to go on and on, no matter how many hundreds of thousand of Ukrainians were killed.

Wife, son and I were in the target electronics department. A guy walks up to son and starts asking him questions. Son looks down at his attire: red button shirt and khaki slacks. He mutters, "aw shit."

but then he proceeded to help the guy find what he was looking for.

175 >>> 160 I was thinking about Ol' Remus from Woodpile Report today. He was about as well prepared as one could be, even had food caches on his property. But in some areas, this took the soil down five feet! People had their houses float away and break apart. It's hard to see how you prep for that. When you think of floods, you like you'd be safe in high places. But slides took out the mountainsides. If you were lucky, you might have a bug out bag.

Ok, time for an oldie: Man living in a flood zone, rains start to fall, creek starts to rise. Sheriff comes by, says "come on, Cletus, get in the car, water's rising all around you."

Cletus says "It's alright sheriff, you know I'm a pious man, the Lord will provide." Reluctantly the sheriff drives on.

The rains continue to fall, now the flood waters are up to his front door, high enough that the National Guard show up in bass boats, saying "Sir, get in the boat, the water's still rising."

Cletus says, "no thank you, son, I am a pious man, I believe the Lord will provide."

Rains continue to fall, now the water is up to his roof, and he's sitting there, with the swirling tempest raging around him, and the Coast Guard shows up with a helicopter. They shout over the speaker "Sir, please put the harness around you, we will pull you up to safety."

Cletus shouts back up, "I am a pious man, I believe the Lord will provide." The chopper can't remain in the storm, so they turn and take off to safety, without him.

Cletus is then standing at the Pearly Gates, when he encounters God for the first time in person. God says "What troubles you, my son."

Cletus replies: "Lord, you know I have been your loyal servant, a man of faith and piety my whole life, and in my time of need, you were not there."

God replies: "I sent you a sheriff's squad car, a National Guard boat, and a Coast Guard helicopter."

Probably empty caskets from a swept-away casket warehouse or funeral home. Can't be proven one way or another based only on photos of closed caskets in a stream or river. I think we should stop the Biblical catastrophe speculation. It's not doing anyone any good.

199 Have you been looking at the pictures coming out of this? It is Biblical destruction. There are towns completely wiped out. Not every place is like that, of course.

We had a 100 year flood in the PNW. Saturated ground, heavy snow pack and a Chinook wind that melted it quickly. There were a few houses that were flooded out. We had a friend with a place he can't get to any more. The road washed out and was never replaced. It was nothing like what this storm did. Don't know if the caskets were empty or full. There are still places where the ground was washed away that deep

I don't doubt that there are plenty of " they're eating each other in the Super Bowl" type things going around, but it's not uncommon in mountainous areas for this to happen after heavy rains.

Saw it happen myself in Wiliamson West Virginia when I was a kid. Lots of small country cemeteries on steep hillsides absolutely had caskets unearthed and carried down the holler.

207 What would you do differently?

Posted by: Gref at October 03, 2024 10:02 PM (aBgBM)

The exact opposite of Triage.

You can't do the "make a big pipeline, flood supplies in" military thing. This will have to be more like capillaries. Relief will have to work its way in - not unlike 'Nam except not under fire - and bring the infrastructure behind it.

And instead of discouraging the probably wasted efforts trying to race ahead ? You let 'em - under then clear agreement that they are on their own. No help is coming if they're help turns out poorly.

So - of course - that's not what FEMA is going to do. Seriously - look at it. FEMA - right now - is most concerned with building a fence around the area. Why ? They're most concerned with "containment".

And that's not just human containment. Information containment. They're running the entire playbook - as if the Carolinas got hit by a nuke.
