The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The Attorney General is hiring two attorneys who are going to work full time on this, and they’re going to be taking people who have these huge sums, and they’re going to take them to court,” D.C. Council member Charles Allen.

Quote II

"How can we start owning our own narrative? What can we do to start building us forward and bringing people out who have been discouraged by crime or whatever the reasons are that they don't come out and patronize businesses as much anymore?" Charlese Banks, owner of The Town Experience

MUST LISTEN: Kamala Harris Admin ARRESTED a man for bringing helicopter full of supplies to Hurricane Helene victims

“There was a man that took off yesterday in his helicopter to go up in the mountains to drop off food. He landed and got arrested and said he was interfering with a government operation, but there's no operations going on.”

“I'm currently in Asheville, North Carolina with my company doing disaster security for a dialysis company, and we're also doing search and rescue for patients to bring them to dialysis so they don't die.

NASA pushes discrimination to favor minorities in its education workshops

“Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!” A NASA press release today proudly touted what it called a “Culturally Inclusive Planetary Engagement in Colorado,” one of a series of recent science/education workships designed specifically to help “black and Latinx youth and their families.”

Though the events are apparently not segregated, it also appears that white and Asian kids and their parents were not really welcome.

Planetary scientists and engineers from Boulder, as well as scientists from Florida, Maryland, and Alaska participated. ReaCH partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, whose staff participated in the workshop to share their perspectives. Other educators local to the Denver area also participated, along with an educational specialist from NASA@ My Library (another Science Activation program). The workshop culminated in an event at the Shopneck Boys & Girls Club in Brighton, CO; workshop participants facilitated a variety of hands-on planetary activities for approximately 120 children. Workshop participants also shared information about college pathways into science professions with teenagers at the Club.

An amazing feat pulled off by Israel. It is a longer read, but quite interesting. Thank goodness they didn't run this across the blabber mouths in the White House.

TEL AVIV — In the initial sales pitch to Hezbollah two years ago, the new line of Apollo pagers seemed precisely suited to the needs of a militia group with a sprawling network of fighters and a hard-earned reputation for paranoia.

The AR924 pager was slightly bulky but rugged, built to survive battlefield conditions. It boasted a waterproof Taiwanese design and an oversized battery that could operate for months without charging. Best of all, there was no risk that the pagers could ever be tracked by Israel’s intelligence services. Hezbollah’s leaders were so impressed they bought 5,000 of them and began handing them out to mid-level fighters and support personnel in February.

None of the users suspected they were wearing an ingeniously crafted Israeli bomb. And even after thousands of the devices exploded in Lebanon and Syria, few appreciated the pagers’ most sinister feature: a two-step de-encryption procedure that ensured most users would be holding the pager with both hands when it detonated.
As many as 3,000 Hezbollah officers and members — most of them rear-echelon figures — were killed or maimed, along with an unknown number of civilians, according to Israeli, U.S. and Middle Eastern officials, when Israel’s Mossad intelligence service triggered the devices remotely on Sept. 17.

Dozens of Meat Processing Plants Expected to Shut Down Under New EPA Rules

EPA touts rules as necessary to control contamination from wastewater, while critics say the rules go too far and exemplify federal overreach.

Food prices—especially meat and poultry—have skyrocketed in the past four years and could be exacerbated further next year when new EPA rules for meat processors go into effect.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Price Outlook for September reported that beef and veal prices had increased for six straight months, and predicted they will rise 5.2 percent overall in 2024. Poultry prices also rose, although by a smaller percentage, and are expected to rise more before year’s end.

The report traced the rise to factors including pandemic-related supply chain disruptions and the worst inflation since the 1980s.
Next year could see still higher meat and poultry prices at the grocery store, analysts say. That’s because an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposal is expected to put some meat processors out of business, resulting in potential job losses and supply chain disruptions.

And here I thought printing trillions of dollars with nothing to back them up caused inflation. Looks like I need to go back to school or something.

Government wants to rename “inflation” to “heat-flation” so they can blame rising prices on climate change.
The Trudeau government cabinet wanted to rename “inflation” to be called “heat-flation” in order “to persuade Canadians to associate the rising cost of living with climate change”.

According to Blacklocks Reporter, The Privy Council Office convened a focus group in April (taxpayer funded, obviously) in order to test out the labels ‘climate-flation’ and ‘heat-flation’.

The smarmy smugness of this man oozes from every pore.

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod implied that “liberal voters” in Asheville, North Carolina, would “figure a way to vote,” despite the damage from Hurricane Helene, while Trump voters would not.

During an episode of the podcast Hacks on Tap, Axelrod spoke about Hurricane Helene and how places such as Asheville, in western North Carolina, had been affected by heavy rainfall and flooding, noting that there was “a lot of displacement” as a result.

Hopefully a date with Karma will help with his condition.

And then Twitter banned Babylon Bee and the rest is history.

I recommend the Tucker interview. It's almost two hours long but it was very interesting to listen to Elon explain why he's now "All In" on Trump. The discussion on the future of A.I. at the end is fascinating.

If you look at the responses to this Tweet, McKibben still hates nuclear, and is still making excuses for China (which is opening two new coal plants a week).

Space exploration, it is about exploring the space, the vastness of the cosmos, where we venture into the unknown, you know, the stars and the galaxies. It's about reaching for the stars, literally and figuratively, because when we explore the space, what we do is we explore the possibilities, and the possibilities are endless, ok?... (more)

I had much better luck (treehouses);

When we talk about treehouses, we're really talking about progress. We're talking about innovation. It's about imagination and the essence of climbing, of pursuing, tree after tree, progress and innovation. Treehouses, like progress, positioned high. Ok? Let me be clear, the nature of the treehouse, like the progress of a nation, is inherently connected to a larger vision.

117 Dozens of Meat Processing Plants Expected to Shut Down Under New EPA Rules

These kinds of regulations are always implemented with horrible immediacy and no consideration for circumstances, benefiting only the wealthy and connected.

It's like laws that suddenly are passed requiring handicap ramps, facilities, or parking spaces.

That these things be required on new constructions might be relatively reasonable, but requiring existing businesses to comply should be coupled with lenient timetables, and account for financial burdens imposed, including financial assistance if the demand is that important and immediate. (Not that I like throwing tax dollars after bad regulations.)

Of course, that's my fantasizing those from the government are there to help, really. As if. BOO!

It was actually tested, I think somewhere in Colorado, problem being the resulting gas was somewhat radioactive, so the holes were capped and the gas never used.

That's gotta be a tree hugger's nightmare - fracking and nukes, all in one package!

229 212 Dunno how it's done now, but back when this was a country, the National Command Authority would work off the SIOP (Single Integrated Operational Plan), which had many variations and options ("Wing Attack, Plan R"). In the late 70s, following an NSC memo signed by Jimmuh, the SIOP was modified and expanded. Worked on this a little bit. Inside joke was that we were now adding "the milk kitchens"* to the target list. Or, more generally, finding ways to "make the rubble bounce higher".

Every nuke needed a target, and at that time we had a lot of nukes. I remember reading that two lane bridges on dirt roads in deepest, darkest Siberia were targeted, because we had run out of better targets, and every nuke needs a target.

You've probably seen that Kardashev civilization type based on the energy levels that can be harnessed and controlled: Type I, planetary energy level. Type II, stellar level energy, Type III, galactic energy level. Type III would be gods, basically. Type II would be Star Trek level.

Anyway, a Type I would theoretically be able to control the weather on their home planet. Now, just how you would go about that, I don't know, but if you can harness and control power levels on the order of the planet, you have enough to stop a hurricane. Or make it worse, or start one.

But we are still Type 0, and will be for some time.

287 Molecular Sieves are engineered Zeolites

A Zeolite can occur naturally, being a mixture of Silicon, Aluminum and oxygen.
They can also be manufactured and artificially manipulated to create a solid with a very specific pore size, measured in Angstroms, or Nanometers.
These are then a molecular size, and work by size exclusion of gas molecules.

Well, your car doesn't have an AC outlet; it has a 12 volt DC outlet (cigar lighter socket), that at best can put out 20 amps at 12 volts, so 240 watts.

You could probably also do it by fractional distillation of the atmosphere gas. CO2 freezes out at a higher temperature than Oxygen, and nitrogen and Argon freeze out at a lower temperature than oxygen.

295 284 I don't know squat about electricity but that has never stopped me.

For today's adventure I am looking at purchasing a 768 kwh battery power station which I want to plug into the AC outlet on my car so I can power a small refrigerator using pass through power when driving and the off the battery when camping.

Degree of difficulty: the AC outlet is capped at 100W and most likely 10 amp while the power supply pulls 250w when configured to its minimum setting.

Question: Will I blow up the car electrical system or will the battery just charge much slower? I am fine with slower charging. Not so fine with blowing up the car.

Posted by: Altaria Pilgram at October 07, 2024 11:51 PM (R+yH5)

Hopefully the AC outlet is fused, and you blow the fuse rather than burning down the car. In either case, it won't work.

Aside from that, are you sure about the ratings of the power station? Charging a 768 kWh battery at 250W will take over 3,000 hours or around 18 weeks. Something sounds off. (Possibly my math, but I don't think so).

296 A Zeolite can occur naturally, being a mixture of Silicon, Aluminum and oxygen.
They can also be manufactured and artificially manipulated to create a solid with a very specific pore size, measured in Angstroms, or Nanometers.
These are then a molecular size, and work by size exclusion of gas molecules.
Posted by: A face in the crowd..... at October 07, 2024 11:54 PM (tjZg/)

Zeolites are not "mixtures" they are minerals, and as such, are specific chemical compounds, with a known crystal structure. Most of them have a considerable amount of water of crystallization included in their structure. And their typical crystal habit includes lots of open space where ion exchange can happen.

Re O2 on Mars. The Perseverance rover carried a little experiment called MOXIE, which was a proof of concept for O2 production by splitting CO2.

It worked nicely.

Now, Elon plans on other "in situ resource utilization" to make methane and O2 for rocket fuel for the return trip. You need to get water out of the ground, split it to H2 and O2, then combine the H2 and CO2 to make methane.

That gives you lots of O2 as well.

That would work, for sure. But all a molecular sieve needs to work is a good pump. Pumps could be solar powered. Or maybe wind powered. Mars has high winds at times, I think. When you are making a valuable product that can be stored, intermittent power sources are not necessarily useless.

Hence the 3-way fridge. Long periods off-grid? Run it on propane. They made kerosene-fueled fridges, too, you know. I saw one working, and it kept food nice and cold. You could probably run an absorption-type fridge off a solar concentrator, but it might be more trouble than than it's worth. Heat a brine to 300 degrees in a solar oven, circulate the hot brine to the absorption fridge, and once cooled, back to the oven.

A regular little 3-way fridge from a camper van or motor coach is what you need. They are about a 2-foot cube, and weigh maybe 40 pounds. I have several of them kicking around here. Haven't had a shiner since back in Little Rock in '72, some young men of melanin taught this dumb white boy a lesson. They were kind enough that two black eyes was the worst I got. Those were days.

And with that fun memory, I'm off to bed.

I was just skimming around about why methane on Mars vs hydrogen directly.

This is the basic idea of what you have to do. Land some shit on Mars, and then make your fuel on Mars to get you back off the planet. So robots making the fuel over a long period of time.

The energy and equipment costs required to store the hydrogen and keep it cryogenic are astronomical.

352 I'm well aware of that. But we're talking about theoretical considerations, not practical ones, because otherwise the discussion is long over. For energy generation from chemical reactions it would be hard to beat H2 + F2. H2 + O2 is second. CH4 + O2 decrements the energy yield by the heat of formation of CH4 from H2.

The "bigger battery" is a fool's errand in this case, then.

What you need is a two-battery system, with a Marine Selector Switch between them. One is a Starting battery (conventional), and the other is a House Bank battery (Deep Cycle), either a solitary 12 v. or paired 6v in series.

Which means you can 'fridge the House Bank down to zero, and still have a Hot Battery to fire up your chariot, and get it's alternator working on recharging the House Bank. Oh, and bring the solar back into the equation, but charging the House Bank ONLY.

Consult the sailing forums for endless expertise on this. They've been doing it for forty years or so.

There are thermoelectric cooler chests. I have one; not used in years. They will keep cold food cold, but lack the capacity to chill un-cold food down to fridge temperatures. Problem with thermo-electrics is that they are semi-conductors electrically, and also thermally. Isolation between the cold side and the hot side just isn't all that good. Gas systems, be they absorption or compressor, achieve better isolation.

Liberals, not knowing squat about thermodynamics, fail to grasp that electrons are basically the working fluid for generating energy. If we lived in an atmosphere of H2, then fuel would be any electron sink, such as O2.

Think of water. If water were stored at altitude, we could (and do) extract energy by catching it running downhill. If water were running uphill (for some reason, such as tidal currents), we could extract energy from that, too. Water is just the working fluid.

The nature of the working fluid is not really relevant, thermodynamically, because it is returned to its original state.

371 Well, that is disappointing.

Watching a YouTube build of the Great Wall Hobby 1/48 P-61B "Lady in the Dark" and the builder commits two errors.

First one is B series Black Widow specific. The main gear doors are now four doors with the longer rear doors closing after gear extension. He glued all the main gear doors in the open position.

Second is particular to "Lady in the Dark." He installed the ADF football just before the radar operator's boarding hatch. For this particular plane of which photos exist, the ADF football was located on the underside of the right boom aft of the main gear doors.

Other than that, pretty nice build.

A propane tank is the back of 106" wheelbase SUV would be most entertaining; carbon monoxide poisoning is always good for a few laughs. The ICECO refrig is 12V DC and it works ridiculously well and runs perfectly using the SUV's 12V DC system. Well, until you turn the car off hence the inserting the Bluetti or similar between the SUV's 12V DC output and the refrigerator's 12 input. Using the SUV's AC outlet to drive Blutetti or equal has complications is what I heard here. I should be fine driving it with the SUV's 12V DC systems though it will charge on the slow side. All this is pretty much a hack system but it does work extremely well and doesn't require hardwiring in additional batteries. Eventually I will pick up a foldable solar panel to recharge the battery if I am staying put for a few days.

385 287 Molecular Sieves are engineered Zeolites

A Zeolite can occur naturally, being a mixture of Silicon, Aluminum and oxygen.
They can also be manufactured and artificially manipulated to create a solid with a very specific pore size, measured in Angstroms, or Nanometers.
These are then a molecular size, and work by size exclusion of gas molecules.

Posted by: A face in the crowd..... at October 07, 2024 11:54 PM (tjZg/)

Yeah. Oxygen concentrators use those; when the pressure is increased, the zeolite absorbs O2; when the pressure is lowered, the zeolite released O2.
