The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I got one of those bills from the IRS saying, you owe this much on this year, you owe this much on this year because of failure to pay on time — here’s the interest that’s accrued,” a former hostage who is a Washington Post reporter, Jason Rezaian, told NPR. Mr. Rezaian faced more than $6,000 in fees for unpaid taxes following his release after 544 days of detention in Iran. “This is an oversight that nobody really thought about.” Washington Post reporter, Jason Rezaian

Emhoff previously spoke out about an affair with his daughter's nanny during his first marriage

A longer read but very interesting about American men and a lost generation?

I don’t have the precise reference, but I am confident that someone somewhere told us that women’s advancement would not be at the expense of men. A rising tide lifts all boats, they say.

Feminists might not have wanted to use the phrase, because it makes them sound stupid, but they have promised women that they could have it all.

50 Can't vouch for any of this but a guy who's done citizen rescue drops in Keys in FL has thoughts about why Feds and state officials may be blocking supplies, link in my nic:

TL/DR: "THE REASON they gave us, was that these donations were not from companies on their "preferred vendors list" and that they would not accept them or give them to the residents of the keys impacted by the storm.

It was at that point that I realized, this is ALL ABOUT MONEY."

91 61 I stand with the striking longshoremen!

They have a perfect right to hold the country hostage, so they can get a huge raise and a guarantee that their jobs will never be automated!

And a bonus is the the head of the longshoreman's union looks and sounds like a Bond Villain!

The resulting food and goods shortages that all you peasants will suffer is well worth it, so that the aristocracy of labor can do better!

Posted by: Kamala Harris, Completely Bereft of Political Instincts! at October 02, 2024 10:12 PM (uxCna)

Unions seem to negotiate for a fixed wage increase over a fixed period of time. Instead of a wage increase indexed to the inflation rate (take your pick of the several versions). Or even an inflation rate plus a percent or two. So now that inflation is a wild card (if Kamala is elected), unions whose contracts are expiring lately all seem to be negotiating for an exorbitant fixed increase over a fixed period of time. Whatever floats your boat. Until automation and hordes of illegals sink your union boat. Can organized labor survive at this rate?

A while back, there was a strike at the Portland branch of Kroger, in part because "men are getting paid more than women".

It turned out that the best paid jobs at the stores were the guys who worked the graveyard shift unloading the delivery trucks at 3 AM.

Hard physical labor in the middle of the night.

For some reason, women weren't interested in that job, even if it was well-paid.

Gen X that is going for Trump, and gen-Z scares me. They have the attention span of a squirrel on crack. We'll need to wait for the next generation.

Because it's 538 and they're still trying to figure out how they screwed up the mid-terms in 2022 so bad. If you believe them, then I've got a beach house in Arizona I'll sell you cheap.

ABC owns 538 now. When a right wing media company owns polling companies, count on slants.

Harris has a better than 55% chance. There are a lot of Red Wave polls in the averages. I don't think she has a 70% chance of winning though. The race could still go either way.

Ever hear those magas express their beliefs? It's like reading a transcript from a Jessie Watters program. Right down to wing outraged by the Harris "laugh". It's poisoned the minds of a very substantial number.

I'm happy this sort of question isn't often answered by automatically blaming the Democratic candidate anymore. Any Dem has only a roughly 50% of winning because the country is extremely polarized and facts don't matter.

On would think that some small fraction of cellphone users would have the smarts to charge their phone off solar cells, or an automobile battery, or a portable generator. No grid power does not equate to zero available power. And comms is important enough to get priority, especially since the power needed is tiny.

Yeah, the phone batteries will drain pretty quick, and yeah, they can charge them via alternate means. But by now the batteries the towers use for backup when the grid goes down are probably drained and with no juice to the towers the phones aren't going to be useful for much of anything. Right now it's HF radio and satellite comms IF you can find a way to power them.

Where the most extreme damage is - flooding, mudslides, etc - is where even people who had that, may not have been able to hold on to it. Someone shared a video from a young woman returning to her family farm, that had been flooded and swept with mud - I seriously doubt she would have been able to send anything had they stayed on the property during the worst of the storm.
Doesn't mean the stories are true, but I can see where there might be delays in getting any visibility for the hardest hit areas, even without malicious intent.

231 Most cell towers have a generator (or more) for back up power.... not 'just' batteries. The towers pull a fair amount of wattage and amps. Probably diesel or LNG. If they've got a tank (and are not relying on service pipes) they'll run for about a week or two. Assuming someone is maintaining the gear.

I've worked around LNG generators before. With a little TLC they'll run for a quite a while. Assuming there's fuel.

And, they're typically secured. Heavily secured.

Some of the towers can send data to other towers and on down the line until the data reaches its destination. Assuming they're within range and operating.

I would presume there is massive infrastructure damage, but stuff underground should be fairly safe. The overhead stuff in the area... not so much.

If the towers are up and just not powered, it's an easier fix than stringing lines.

279 Vietnam experience told the combat aircraft pilots that 3,000 ft. AGL was the magic number to stay out of the Small Arms Zone.

Now, when Charlie would break out the 12.7 mm NSV, that'd change the equation, a bit. And the 20mm well, that'd ERASE the equation, and the airplane, too.

Aerostat anchored to float at +4,000 ft. AGL from the nearest peak or high point, oughta get it done.

And is a "good enough" solution for a few weeks while they do the work to get the real towers, back online.

311 Hello Morons and ettes,

Long time no see me popping up like a demented gofer.

I am fine. I am a grandmother now of two gorgeous, bright and funny kids. I am still with my guy for almost 45yrs of wedding bliss and insanity. Life is very good.

I pop up as I am enraged, y'all, about what is going on in the mountains of NC and TN. It is personal because I have a very good friend who is up there, alive, but their house hit by a mudslide and they lost both cars. They will be fine if they get off the mountain, and I hope they decide to soon.

From videos tonight, some on r/Helene (still don't know how to post here as I remain stoopid)...well. Enraged is a word that does not cut it.

We have, as y'all probably know, independent helicopter pilots performing rescues on their own. Risking their on lives on their own dime. A man from FL said the military helicopters are far less in the air, with some on the ground, waiting for our heroes in DC (or whomever has Joe's pen) to sign Title 10. I don't know what Title 10 is, not being military, but I would gladly sign it to prevent further loss of life. Another independent helicopter pilot was stopped by "authorities" from rescuing people. More...

313 Looking at the meme pic of Vance and Walz, I'm reminded of the Kennedy & Nixon debate. I distinctly remember Dad, thoroughly Oklahoma Republican, jumping out of his recliner and raging around, because he could see what was being done to Nixon. There was bright, handsome, smiling Jack, and the ill-lit, five o'clock shadowed Dick. Nixon was "winning" on debate points, but Jack was the superstar. It was like the election was over right then.

This is the strangest Presidential election year ever, though, far and away. From Trump's ear being miraculously only nicked, to Biden's being ousted, along with wars, invasion, and now strikes and floods, it's just an amazing moment in history. If you'd written it as fiction, no one would think it realistic.

314 Gah, I was rudely cut off from my train of blabbering. Meanwhile, home owners are cutting the trees on their moutain roads just to get down. Some find the roads they get down to are worse and have to hike on foot. CNN was prevented from filming Lake Lure area by authorities. It is very, very bad and we may never know how many are dead or missing as it is such a freaking mess. God help them all. At least Florida has Governor Desantis, altho it is a huge area, too, that is a mess. He, like former FL governors, know how to run emergency management and hurricanes. I will even defend Jeb! on this topic.

Back to NC. Time is running out to save the living.

Title 10 I hope is now signed but have no idea since no one is running this country. I am beyond livid but too olde to volunteer with these brave men and women. I mean, the roads are so bad in the mountains of NC and TN that mules are bringing in some supplies. MULES. Many of E TN National Guard are in Kuwait, of all places. And the men of Fort Bragg, who have families in W NC, are told they can't take leave because they may have to go to the ME to fight that endless war.

Please, I beg you, get the word out.

A decade or so ago, or whenever that horrible abortionist in Chicago was putting baby's feet in jars, and certainly during my last bout of insanity over Benghazi after 9/11/12, I messed bigly with the WaPo commenter nitwits. Back then I could be myself but not myself. I pretended to be a French anthropologist in the midst and they fell for it as they ain't too bright. Once they knew I was foreign they were very polite about my abortion reports. I am a redneck, if that makes me foreign. During Benghazi they thought I was SeeEyeA, as I knew so much and they were bewildered and kept asking me how I knew stuff...all I did was read the truth in the UK DM on the subject and erupt facts to them. They'd swarm up like hornets on acid. I was laughing so much my poor husband checked on me one rainy weekend. Ah, the old days of yore, when I was free to whack a few moles.

333 Us stoopid old boomers grew up with hand-me-down clothes, second-hand cars (or total basket cases that we had to repair ourselves), party-line phones (or a single-line from Ma Bell that parents could pick-up & listen in on)... Curfews, chaperones and rules that *would not* be broken for "special circumstances"

Up Hill Both Ways? No.

Just... be responsible. Learn something. Put your own fking skin in the game.

It's like Dad said: "Life is not fair. Nobody owes you anything."

Good on ya, to get that parchment on your wall.

My parents yearned for me to get edumacated...pushed so hard that I cracked & ran. There were other reasons, but let's just say that I disappointed them. Badly. And was on my own without their permission or blessings.

Mom was especially bitter. Don't think she truly forgave me until right before she died.

But I *did* land a good job in my 30s... didn't make me rich, but paid all the bills plus a little. My retirement portfolio is quite modest-- just hope I don't outlive what's there. FJB isn't helping!

Both got erased immediately.
