You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement. And they have learned to get to the top floor of your once beautiful, middle class home. You want no them gone immediately. You call the city, 4 different exterminators, but nobody can handle the job. But there is this one guy that specializes in racoon eradication and he guarantees you to get rid of them. So you hire him. You don't care if the guy smells, you don't care if the guy swears, you don't care if he's an alcoholic, you don't care how many times he's been married, you don't care if he voted for Obama, you don't care if he has a plumber's crack, you don't even care if he's a misogynist. you simply want those raccoons gone! You want your problem fixed! He's the guy. He's the best to solve the problem. Period. Here's a corollary story for why Trump has such a large following of patriotic American citizens. We don't care that Trump is crude, we don't care that he insults people, we don't care that he once was friendly with Hillary, we don't care that he has changed positions, we don't care that he's been married 3 times, we don't care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O'Donnell, we don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslim terrorist. Also, we don't care if the guy has bad hair. This country is weak in resolve and bankrupt. With the Fever out of playoff contention due in part to opposing players commiting heinous fouls while the "refs" looked the other way.
I have come to the conclusion that this is NOT about women's basketball.
Darkly, it is about an effort by a supremely talented player who has risen above the standard mediocre play and in ONE season has managed to put this hodge-podge league on notice and in doing so, she has become a big target because of it.
The reality is that she "an individual talent" will not be tolerated by the group think, socialist/Marxist construct that is the WNBA. The only talents there before her arrival were Welfare Queens and Hood Rats which fit the WNBA model just fine. That is because almost all of them would dip on being an American when told to do so.

Perhaps they should have been better prepared. But I understand why they weren't. This is practically unheard of in the Blue Ridge.
The forecasts said that this storm would rip through to the West for one thing - my town was on the incorrect predicted course. They were surprised by it veering off course.
I'm glad it didn't hit my home. But I sort of wish it had. We've had a worse history of flooding here, and so we have better flood control here (TVA waterworks). I think the destruction and death would have been less here.

I've wondered for the last couple of years if we are not affecting the environment by the WAY we use energy. We make it in the country (Hydro, Coal, Gas, even solar) then use transmission lines to ship it to large cities to use.
Now, as a LOT of electricity puts off waste heat... are we not essentially moving energy, including heat, into concentrated areas, that then RETAIN that heat (concrete and such)... how can that NOT affect weather patterns?

And it's slow going. In many cases they can't even get to the lines cause the roads are blocked, or bridges washed out. So they have to have road clearing crews in before they can even be assess the damage.

Damn. R.I.P. One of my boyhood heroes. I always slid head-first into bases and sprinted to first full-speed on ground balls hit because of "Charlie Hustle" ... and knocked a fair number of catchers on their arses (usually causing the ball to go flying) on plays at home.

Look at Earth from Space and you'll realize that the volume of the atmosphere is just huge and those cities mean nothing compared to the Sun. Imagine one hotplate in a hi-rise - it's not going to warm much of that room let alone the building.

Definitely. But they have an advantage. There are plenty of white people who can belt it out from the chest, but it's easier for blacks women. I don't know why, but it is.
White people tend to play to their strength and sing from the throat, hitting the higher registers. But it burns their voices out faster.

Here is a question: the concept of the space elevator is being argued about, it is a cable that has one end rooted in the bedrock and the other on a stone in Low Earth Orbit, that you can climb up to get to orbit. I am told that angular momentum will cause it to deform so it can't work.
My question is different, wouldn't the cable cut across a pretty active magnetic field of the Earth interacting with the solar wind and field? And wouldn't it create a current that could be tapped for "free" energy?

A year ago, I delayed having this done because I was wary of surgery. After major bowel surgeries in October and April, this seemed almost trivial. Before, the whole thing of prep & surgery & recovery might have freaked me out a bit, but it was all familiar routine today. And no ten-day hospital stay this time; in and out in about two & 1/2 hours.
Just one more little scar to add to my lifetime collection. Altogether, I'm glad to be alive in this century. Never mind Dr McCoy's disdain for "jabbing people with needles and sewing them up like cloth."

And there is a counterweight on the end of another cable, another 23,000 miles out. But the whole shebang rotates with the Earth, so its movement would not cut any magnetic field lines. Perturbations in the field, i.e. magnetic storms might induce currents, I suppose. But who says the cable would be metal?

It's a cultural thing, mostly. Germans and others do it to. They speak/sing through their 'mask'. It's allowing the sound to resonate through the hollow sinus bones in the head as one vocalizes. As one does this it resonates through the body but mostly it's the head. Using the whole head as a resonator instead of sound coming directly from the vocal cords out of the mouth makes a big difference.

Correct. Earth's magnetic field doesn't move (much), which is why a compass always points north. A stationary wire in a static field doesn't have a current induced in it; either the field or the wire have to move. And thermodynamics is a heartless bitch, so the energy you spend to move the wire has to be greater than the electrical energy you'd gain from moving it.
If this could work--if earth's spin and the field's were different--it would deorbit the satellite because both the earth and the satellite would slow down to make electricity. Though only one would be measurably slower.

I have been told that, but the Earth's field is not static, it fluctuates under the influence of the Solar field and solar wind.
One of the shuttle launches had an experimental rig that set out a kilometer of cable with a mass at the end to cut the magnetic field, and it burnt through due to excessive current. No idea if it was a thick wire or not.

Of course blacks are better athletes. There's no question about that. I assume the desire and effort to become a top athlete is evenly distributed among the races.
But having said that, I think the desire to be viewed as intelligent is also equally distributed among the races, and on that one the blacks falls short.

In 2021 a full 40% of Police jurisdictions did not report crimes to the Federal Database. Last Year New York, LA, San Fran, Chicago, and many others did not report because reporting is just 'suggested' and it costs time and money to compile all the data TO report.
We have no reliable data on crime, especially when it concerns racial categories, because many of the inner cities where a lot of minorities live, no longer report to the database at all.

Apparently the whole Alberta grid was less than 5 minutes short of having major generating stations and major loads all tripping off line because the frequency was falling below 60 Hz for too long. A result of wind turbines not working, or working too much.

Re. the level of destruction in west NC / east TN, I don't quite have the words for the impression I'm getting, of the ground being washed around or under the buildings on it. JackStraw posted a link to a 2016 article about the 1916 floods in Asheville with some pretty amazing descriptions and pictures, and this sounds like it's at least as bad if not worse.

A whole house generator is far more expensive than a portable and you'll probably have a much longer wait, especially now
buuut, nice to have the automatic failover say, if the power goes out quietly in the middle of the night.
If you get a portable you can get an outside plug installed that lets you switch over to the generator much more easily - no extension codes out a window or whatever.

They both run like a mofo. The one that is going to go to Weird Dave even generates power as it should. I ran a 240 volt space heater off it, and it handled it right fine.
The other one, which is 120 volts only, no way to get 240 at all, runs well, but the generator does not put out. It did for a few seconds, and then quit. I think the bridge rectifier in the exciter circuit may have shit the bed.

One rude thing I learned about generators and their output.
What they are rated at is what they do. It's not like a gasser where you can force a little more. It's got a red line, you cross it and it drops out.
On those compressors rate it at the start up amps not the running amps. That's the extent of my knowledge. Oh, my well pump had a two wire system not a three wire pump. OK that means it took three time the amperage not double that a three wire would take.

Duel fuel, gas/propane is the way to go. Power output is slightly lower on propane but your generator should be sized to your needs so it isn't running at the upper end of load capacity for extended periods.

For me, a whole-house generator is overkill. I don't need a lot electricity. Water heater and range are gas, so is hot-water heating system. The only electric it needs is a few watts for the control transformers, and about a hundred watts for the circulating pump.
I have a 3500 watt ancient Coleman genset in the garage, powered by an 8 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. I have a "death cord" made up to plug it into the welder outlet in my garage. In the event of a power failure that looks like it might be lengthy, I pull the main switch at my pole, and lock it out. Then drag the generator out onto the concrete apron outside the garage door, and plug it into the welder outlet. Fire up the generator, and throw the breaker...

The week without power after the last Houston-area hurricane (which was just bad wind here) was the final straw. Generac, about $15k. Around a five- to six-month waitlist at that time. Will be installed this November.
Of course, if you get flooded the way these poor bastards have been, your whole house generator may be under water.

I was looks at prices for 25 - 50 and higher. You're talking $30k and low end for just the engine and generator. Add the wiring, fuel tanks and supporting equip required and you're talking 100k.

My setup runs the garage, lamps in the big shop, and everything in the house, but not all on at once. I can have my heat, my lights, my fridge, and my computer. Clothes dryer is right out. Well pump, and water system pressure pump are OK. If the well pump kicks in, and I see the lights go dim, I will either shut off the well pump, or shed some other loads for the half-hour or so that it normally runs to refill the cistern.

Answer. Water cooled, skid mounted, 3 cylinder Diesel genny, mounted on steel frame 6 ft. above ground. 100+ gal fuel tank, mounted 7 ft. above ground, above 150 gal. steel catch tank as it's foundation.
Pro-tip. Invest in or contract to, having the equipment to "sweeten" the fuel in the tank on an annual basis. Diesel might like to grow mildew. This, eliminates, that.

Any of your local welders can build the elevated frame, and many will have the means to hoist the genny up onto the thing, when ready. Fuel tank listings show them already ON the frames, ready to deliver.
Build a simple frame shack/roof to cover the genny. Even if the storm strips the frame, it'll be shielded from weather, as it waits.
Not only will diesel give a higher energy density. You'll find it FAR EASIER to source a refill, when you need it the most.

FAST IDLE will be at least +750 rpm more. It's an Idle against LOAD. Whole house? 1.5 to 2 gal per hour.
The combo of Tractor Engine to PTO genny, is NOT set up for economy. It's set up to run field equipment without the genny bogging down when the 220 v. Lincoln Doghouse Welder kicks in.
A skid mounted, water cooled genny, is basically a maritime, yacht generator with a radiator to cool it, vs. seawater from under the hull.
Yacht Captains are notoriously jealous of anything that burns an ounce more of diesel, than absolutely necessary.
Fuel = Range, after all.

Cost of that Clean Signal being about + 1/3 the base fuel burn for the dirty signal, there.
A good Power Conditioner adds a load all of it's own. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Huge UPS the size of a trailer running radar. That was just enough to tide it over until the diesel generators could spin up. Had to have two or three generators each capable of running entire load. Fail tolerance for the generators.
They had problems upon testing.Huge UPS pulled very nonlinear, non sine current waveform. That messed up the gen voltage and freq regulation. Power would go dirty, UPS would trip back on battery. Power would get clean, UPS switch back and start cycle again.
They had to filter the hell out the UPS I put as best they could and modify the gen regulators as well to handle that It was a major thing. that harmonic problem is well understood and dealt with now
