  • MSI has confirmed that CUDIMMs work with AMD as well as Intel processors. (Tom's Hardware)

These are memory modules with clock regenerator chips onboard, allowing them to run stably at higher speeds - up to 9.6GHz currently, with even faster speeds promised.

The problem is that they are otherwise still standard DDR5 modules, so to hit those speeds they have to run at much higher than normal voltages.

  • Kia's online dealer portal could be used to steal cars with the click of a button. (Bleeping Computer)

This has reportedly been fixed but who the hell thought that was a good idea?

  • Are software developers gaining from the miracle of generative AI? No. (CIO)

Productivity has not improved, bugs have not been reduced, and developer burnout is as bad as ever.

If anything, unfamiliar AI-generated code is making the situation worse.

  • Lenovo's 2024 Legion Y700 tablet is here. (Liliputing)

This is the only good small Android tablet on the market. And when I say "on the market" I mean not on the market, because it is almost impossible to buy outside of China.

    Why? I have no idea.

Anyway, this model appears to remove the microSD card. The previous update removed the headphone jack.

Why? Because fuck you, that's why.

  • After Unity committed suicide with its overbearing and larcenous new licensing terms, open-source competitor Godot had its moment in the sun.

It just committed suicide in a very messy and public way.

Godot's community manager went psychotically woke on Twitter, not just affirming LGBTQIA+ bullshit over everything else, but blocking users and hiding replies from anyone who dared to question this in even the most polite terms.

Hundreds of people. It just keeps going.

And the CEO of Godot has gone into hiding.

Many of the stories that came out after Katrina that the media did their best to handwave away, ignore, or debunk? True. While waiting for jury duty in 2010, I spoke with a former cop who affirmed that the tale of gang members *shooting at rescue helicopters* was true, for example.

I hope that Asheville is more civilized and that the natives have less of the "Gubmint gotta take care of us!" attitude that this town evinces. The MS Gulf Coast got ignored in all the handwringing about Gnawluns; it had worse devastation, proportionally speaking; and yet they set to work and got things back to normal fairly quickly. As NO did in 1965 after Betsy.

Years ago we had a pretty nasty winter storm, when that storm hit the Sierra Crest there was a violent windshear that literally snapped the top 30-40ft off the tops of healthy, mature, yellow pine, ponderosa, doug fir etc., and hundreds of those broken top fell across the highway. The locals (a buddy among them) had that highway open in two days.

I bet the Asheville folks are like that.

18 "And the CEO of Godot has gone into hiding."

The community manager seems to have flown off the handle on a Friday (the 27th.) The company had probably emptied out for the weekend by the time the damaging PR storm had really got rolling.

Godot's management is going to have a really "fun" Monday. I'd expect a statement from the CEO to be issued today or tomorrow as soon as the company figures out how it wants to try to respond to this.

One of the better responses I've seen a company give to this sort of thing was from Heckler & Koch:

https://x.com/HecklerAndKoch/
status/1658959377632559104

The best was Red Bull's CEO (Dietrich Mateschitz) firing the C* level executives in the USA who leaked an internal company confidential memo in order to try to pressure the company to take a pro-Black-Lives-Matter stance.

Dietrich said little, but his actions reminded everyone at Red Bull that he owns and runs Red Bull, not the employees, and that they should focus on the work and growing sales, not engaging in damaging and irrelevant identity politics.

That's the proper way to handle this kind of cancer in a company: Excise it with a quickness and get back to work.

29 On Sat. Miss Linda and I had dinner at the Chik-Fil-A within walking distance of my apartment. I was positive, considering the poor quality of this area, that it would be a disaster. Nope. The store was clean, not crowded, and appointed just like the one we go to in the suburbs; the service was quick and professional. My grilled chicken sandwich was not *quite* as hot as I'd have preferred, but considering everything else, I let that go and enjoyed the meal.

It wasn't crowded because there was a long line of cars at the drive-thru, I guess.

Sounds like a bunch of teen girls.

And if you need an OK tablet, Samsung Tab A 8.4 Verizon model was $100 and has SD card and headphone jack. It is robust enough to run offline GPS with massive amounts of maps loaded fairly briskly, while it runs productivity and other software like e-reader stuff just fine.

IIRC, my prior tablet at that price point, a Samsung Tab A 7" from Costco ran great for about 6-8 years, until Android got really bloated.

70 >I have to wonder if generative AI for code has the same issues of hallucinating and just making shit up.

Yes. It will routinely write code that references methods and libraries that don't exist.

>Productivity has not improved, bugs have not been reduced, and developer burnout is as bad as ever

I've been in software engineering for 25 years, and I can count on one hand the number of software engineers I've known that could be considered basically competent, much less _good_. There is a massive Dunning-Kruger problem in the software industry driven by a complete lack of accountability. I used to think that requiring "software engineering" to be licensed the same way conventional engineering is would be a disaster for the industry. I'm slowly beginning to think it's the only thing that can save it.
