The Fire of Troy
Frederik van Valckenborch

A lot of Frederik van Valckenborch’s work seems to consist of wide, sprawling, detailed landscapes and populated with melodramatic human figures. They have dominant foregrounds with supporting middle- and backgrounds. I got the impression that he was particularly interested in intense subject matter, such as wars or tragedies. A source I read categorizes his style as Mannerist, the period of art history immediately following the High Renaissance where artists experimented with the rules and innovations of art developed during that earlier era. The intense drama of The Fire of Troy, its swirling forms and color, and figures melting into others, also foreshadow the coming Baroque era.

In The Fire of Troy, van Valckenborch creates a scene of terrible slaughter. This is the very end of the Trojan War. The Greeks have emerged from the Horse and rampage through the city at night, catching the Trojans totally by surprise. The main scene is in the foreground center left. Warriors attack a group of women and girls who will be taken back to Greece as slaves. All the males of the city, adults and children, will be killed.

Behind this group is the battle. The Greeks flow like a flash flood from the Horse into the city while the Trojans try to dam the flow. There is panic and chaos. This section is interesting to me. At first, it was hard to tell which way the action was moving. When I first looked at it, it looked like the mass was charging from upper-left to bottom-right. Then when I refocused my gaze, it switched, going from bottom-right to upper-left. Looking closer, I saw that this flood has currents. Some groups charge to the right, some countercharge to the left — and slicing through the mass is a troop of cavalry. It is chaos and it highlights the confusion of battle and the realities of open, hand-to-hand combat. It’s a neat effect and it gives The Fire of Troy energy and noise.

The Trojan Horse in the background is almost lost in all the chaos. It’s a small, tan shape that blends into the scenery. It is the source of the action, though. The raging flood flows from it and around it. If you embiggen the painting, you can see Greeks still emerging from the Horse. It gives the effect that the Greeks just keep coming with no end in sight. It’s a neat detail.

The confusion of battle is replicated in van Valckenborch’s technique. His loose brushstrokes complement and exaggerate the action on the ground. Fire becomes a raging inferno when painted like this. It feels hot and out of control. The limited use of color helps, too. The Fire of Troy is a night scene lit by the fire, so the colors are mostly yellows, oranges, and some reds. They glow against the blackness.

I like the details of this painting. The main scene of the warriors and women in the front is complemented by others: the Greeks descending from the Trojan Horse, the cavalry battle in the middle, the screaming women on the balcony to the right, the architecture, etc. The flow of the action leads my eye around to take it all in. My favorite scene, however, might be the black and red group of buildings near center right. I really like van Valckenborch’s use of silhouette to brighten the flames, and the red glowing through the windows flickers. It looks like something out of Dante and compounds the horror and tragedy of the scene. Van Valckenborch then added groups of people fleeing in panic from this blaze into the heart of the slaughter. It is Hell. This black and red contrasts with the large area of yellow and white to the left, enhancing both.

There are a few things that feel off about this painting. The perspective is wrong. Distances and scale also feel inaccurate. Since Mannerists liked to play around with the viewer’s expectations, Van Valckenborch could be using these distortions to create a sense of imbalance in the viewer in another attempt to depict the realities of war.

The cityscape itself is a fantastical Renaissance setting. The real Troy was a late Bronze Age fortress without elaborate Romanesque architectural details such as domes. It isn’t a contemporary city either. It’s something Van Valckenborch made up. He seems to fill his city with references to specific monuments, however. The columns dotting the scene are similar to the Column of Trajan. The large round building in the left background behind the Trojan Horse looks like an exaggerated version of the Temple from Raphael’s The Marriage of the Virgin. It was common for artists to use contemporary or familiar places and props as sit-ins for their ancient subject matter. Notice that the armor of the soldiers is not period specific either. Van Valckenborch clothed his figures in a mixture of styles and time periods. He needed a powerful city and two powerful armies. For art like this, historical accuracy is secondary to the message: the drama and climax of a great story and the fall of a great city.

I think the part that really throws me off is the scale balcony on the right and compared to the burning buildings next to it. The perspective seems forced and "off" over there.

Did the Greeks have the secret of "Greek fire" at this point, or was that more of a Hellenistic development? Seems to me if they had, they'd have tried to burn Troy without waiting for ten years.

100 I don't expect historical accuracy for legendary art of this period. The artist used aspects of the familiar partly to connect with the audience and partly because they wouldn't have known the area and accoutrements of the period. What van Valckenborch captured is the horror, confusion and brutality of the event. The varied lighting from general to flaming illumination gives a feel for the scale of the battle as do the many groups fighting in different parts of the field. Notice there are no distinct individuals even in the foreground figures. Everyone is caught up in the historical event. It is a maelstrom of violence: confused, always shifting, and impersonal. The scene is horrific more than exciting and, I assume, is meant to be.

I actually prefer van Valckenborch's simpler scenes and landscapes. The give a true emotional feel to the painting without getting lost in a mob of violence.

I've always understood that Greek fire was a Byzantine development.

The Byzantines kept the recipe for it a closely-guarded state secret, but eventually it got out and they lost the advanage that it had given them. I do believe that naphtha was one of the ingredients, but I don't know if the exact recipe is still known.

The venue isn't the biggest concern, I don't think. I mean, only 'old school' local show goers from DFW would know about Trees, or The Bronco Bowl. I just try to use the opening act (spoof of someone's typo usually) with an actual band to make it ring true.

Random phrase above, Technotronic is related in topic -ish and the Starplex is still around, but called something completely different in the Dallas Fair Park area.

224 I watched the Ken Burns "Leonardo" documentary the last two nights. It's not bad but I wish they had spent more time with his techniques and materials. What they had about that was fine, just insufficient. Two episodes isn't enough to cover the man. He was extraordinary in so many ways not least because of the materials that were available. Paints had to be ground and mixed by hand. Even ink had to be made from basic materials and combined in ways that would work with the paper and other media of the time. Then there is the unmatched subtleties of his painting.

Apples are okay, dealt with them on and off for years. Proprietary hardware is always a PITA to get fixed. But all systems whether intel, apple, or linux/BSD, require backup of your data and programs religiously (once per week if not once every couple of days) if you are doing important stuff on them.

What I recommend to any man going through this type of thing, as hard as it is, just lay the foundation for that future relationship you'll have with your children. Don't give the child any indication of your troubles with their mother, other than passing acknowledgement that you're not spending time with them because of decisions made by a court, that allowed their mother to have primary custody.

If you do it right, they'll figure out who their mother is, and what she did, and you will be able to have that adult relationship you deserve with your children.

It's not ideal, but it's the best you can do... and it sounds like you did that.

Main reason I don't care for them is Safari as a browser blows chunks (and due to Apple's proprietary mania---all other browsers that I am aware of are simply look and feel skins on top of Safari). The second strike is the proprietary hardware at nosebleed prices. Only reason I tried Apple again was for office laptop before I retired when I use Linux desktops at home for main usage.

They are not a bad purchase of refurbished laptops off corporate lease compared with really dreadful Dell or (shudder) HP used laptops. Lenovo, for some reason, actually has a bit more quality and more fully equipped as to ports, etc. there if you have to buy used.

It is not Social Security driving the deficit train. Fixes on it are relatively minor--raising the age to get benefits to 70 for full and 65 for reduced would resolve a lot of issues if coupled with killing the cap on income earned while collecting benefits.

The driver of deficits is Medicare/Medicaid (plus interest on the national debt which is not really negotiable). Medicare tax rates are far below what is necessary to pay for escalating medical costs far beyond the rate of inflation. Medicaid costs have ballooned since Obamacare and the surge of illegals and requiring the fedgov to extend Medicaid to 3x poverty level plus pay 100 percent for extension (supposed to be temporary) plus waivers of all sorts to allow technically ineligible people to sign up is a major factor. Health care is 1.8 trillion.

SS is 1.5 trillion spending but 1.2 trillion in taxes raised. But, the Medicare tax raises about 200 billion while Medicare is spending close to 900 billion. 600 Billion is spent on Medicaid and private insurance subsidies for Obamacare.

Usually, that type of drive is used in Netbooks and very small machines. Our news dept had Mac laptops in the news vehicles and we were able to remove the SSDs from them. But, in the primary operating areas of the station, nothing but PCs running Windows. Including the news servers and robotic cameras. Easily upgraded or recoverable if there was a hardware failure. No room for "down time" in that business.
