Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Charlie Kirk. I hear a lot criticism of Kirk. I don't really know why. I don't know Charlie Kirk, I never will. Frankly, I don't care. But I see him do something like this? That's good stuff.

20 Fido Friday: It was my priveledge to see a shepherd work his flock with a Border Collie when I was in Ireland recently. A thing of beauty. The shepherd controlled the dog with whistles. After the herd was moved to another pasture, the man turned to me and said watch this:

He commanded the dog to remain by his feet and again used whistles (only) to move the flock to another pasture. They thought the dog was working them apparently.

We all walked back to the village and then had a few perfectly poured pints. It was grand.

For anyone that cares ... and you really shouldn't ... I landed at Tel Aviv on 10/7 - at about 9:00 AM local. Second time in country - to head to Ashkalon - or however they spell it. That's how it sounds.

Point being - I'm not a big fan of being in Israel - even before the attack. You don't see big constructions crews of Jews pouring concrete. That's all Muslims. You see big billboards of dudes with beards selling bibles everywhere, though.

One side was trying to kidnap people that looked like me. The other side took about twelve hours to wrap their heads around the idea that this time the cheap labor wasn't fucking around.

Yet the idiots just rented me a hotel room - while the other side wanted me as a bargaining chip. And that, my friends, is Israel.

40% of the country went for Carter - even after watching hostages held on live TV for quite a while - lining up on even / odd days in some areas to get gas - and crime much, much worse than now with a populace that wasn't armed in public.

Seriously - we live in the Golden Age of private firearm ownership. Largely because of how shitty everything went during Carter.

And yet ... 40% voted for him, with Anderson splitting the vote probably more away from Carter than Reagan ... he pulled ten points.

And that's back in the dawn of the 80s. You know - that era certain folks here swear was the apex of Pax Americana. When the electorate was "sane".

88 Gee, just found this paragraph in my Pattern 1907 Wiki...

Model 1917 bayonet
Main article: M1917 bayonet
Upon their entry into World War I, the United States military adapted the Pattern 1914 Enfield rifle to the .30-06 Springfield cartridge to make up for shortfalls in production of the Model 1903 Springfield rifles, creating the substitute standard Model 1917 Enfield rifle. To accompany the M1917 rifle, the United States simply adopted the Pattern 1913 bayonet as the Model 1917 bayonet. Over 2,000,000 Model 1917 bayonets were manufactured in the United States during the war, including 545,000 Pattern 1913 bayonets manufactured for but not delivered to the British military, that were simply re-stamped as Model 1917 bayonets. The Model 1917 bayonet was adopted unchanged to be used with United States Army combat shotguns. After the war, the M1917 bayonet was retained for use with combat shotguns, and remained in United States service until the 1980s.[5][10][11]

90 25 I watched an episode from the 1960's "Outer Limits" show called "O.B.I.T."

It's about an alien technology that allows you to watch anyone, any where, at any time.

And how addictive this technology is.

In other words, this predicted cell phones and social media. This is 2024 society predicted in 1963.

Posted by: BeckoningChasm at September 20, 2024 10:13 PM (CHHv1)

That episode takes a while to get going but the last 2/3 is frightening. Especially given the tech we have today, as you said.

If you haven't watched the original Outer Limits episodes, give them a try if you can find them cheap. Some episodes are duds but most are good-to-terrific, IMHO.

And as with the original Twilight Zone episodes, you can see many, many big stars and long-time character actors near the start of their careers.

92 When I was doing HPDE (high performance driving events) while near Laguna Seca, CA we'd occasionally take underprivileged and handicapped kids for rides.

Not racing... but quick enough to illicit a response from some of the more uncommunicative ones. Most of the time they'd start squealing and laughing... "go faster" was a common refrain. For many of them it was their first experience outside their protective care.

You can't help but get a bit teary eyed.

94 I quit following baseball a long time ago but this caught my attention today. A Japanese player named Shohei Ohtani, designated hitter playing this season for the Dodgers, set a major league season record last night. He has hit 51 home runs and stolen 51 bases this season, so far.

He had a game of a lifetime doing it last night. He was 6 for 6 at the plate with 10 runs batted in, 3 home runs and two stolen bases.

And, oh yeah, he's a pitcher normally. He pitched for three and a half or so seasons with the A's. Had a record of 38 and 19 with an era of 3.01. He would normally pitch in rotation and bat designated when not pitching I assume. He hasn't pitched this season due to injury.

Got a long was to go to catch the Babe though.

Yes, it would, and I'm not sure how much anyone has tried to model and figure that out. The earth itself would be more destabilizing because of the non-spherical, lumpy mass distribution (the Moon itself is even worse about this for low lunar orbits).

Our Daisy the Belgian Malinois has run off into the pasture twice in two days and "herded" cattle. She has pretty good instincts, but it's dangerous right now because we've got newborn calves and protective mamas, as well as some very pregnant cows.

Thought we'd got her to not do that, but, well, instinct is strong.

She don't work no cows
She never did learn how
But I take her along anyhow

Ach, he of the last of the Hohenzollern line poses this question? Werner replies that he has compelled every Belgian he encounters to waffle and plead for mercy. For Gott's sake, I tell them, Fleming or Walloon, make a fricking choice already. This reduces them to a state of frightened confusion not unlike that of a Kardashian attempting to solve a quadratic equation. I am kind to the small ones, handing them a copy of the Federalist Papers and telling them to run along and read with focus, such that you can recite them by heart. Then, say I, once you have gained this knowledge, go and do likewise. Here endeth the lesson. Sean Connery said this once in a film, and so is it wisdom. The sequence in that film that many take as an homage to the Potemkin Steps sequence is actually based on the occasion where TV's Edward James Olmos and I had to employ our revolvers to prevent Kinski being taken away by a rogue wing of PETA. Even now Werner can still smell the cordite and hear the deafening reports of the firearms in the cavernous space of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Happy mempries such as these sustain us.

199 >> Would there not be a size limit for tidal forces to break up an asteroid?

Oh yes, the real Roche limit depends on the size and shape, and the composition, and the calculation gets very intractable quickly, with only various approximations.

The simplest one assumed you have a ball of non-interacting dust clumped together by its own gravity. No attractive forces holding the dust together. The the Roche limit is just when the tidal field overcomes the self-gravity.

But add the internal forces in. Then the body will deform into a non-spherical shape, and if it's holding together, that will distort its own gravitational field into something non-spherical, which will add complexity.

A good farmer/herder with eventual help from sons can produce more than he needs to feed his family alone. Communal farms can produce a lot of surplus because there is a constant supply of additional labor - early-teen sons and daughters who grow, get stronger and more productive, and also procreate. Then taxes of some of the surplus grain, fruit, eggs, and livestock began being levied by the natural leaders/warriors (needed to defend the community farm and pasture areas from raiding), bringing-in enough food for the warriors to do nothing but wage war/raid neighboring community fields, and so it began.

Even Saturn's rings aren't stable. They still haven't figured it all out, but the rings may only be about 10 - 100 million years or so old. Could be older by other theories, but the Cassini data is in line with the 100 million year age.

Some of Saturn's rings are well outside the Roche limit, and you have "shepherd moons" that keep them from clumping together. That's a complex process.

I also remember something theory about a ring cycle for Saturn. Rings form, disappear, then come back again in a long cycle.

Posted by: Gref at September 20, 2024 11:41

Yes, and that may provide for his retirement and some inheritance, in ideal circumstances. But there were many variables, if the farmer died young and left a widow w/ young children it was tough.

True story (not like Joe's true stories)...
after Joe and Eliza settled in N IL in 1840 they farmed 160 acres until he died in 1852 at 41. She had 6 kids and the oldest was Alfred, 13.

Yet Eliza was listed as a Farmer in the 1860 census, a rarity for females. She held on to the farm, Alfred went to fight in the CW and died.

His younger brother Thomas farmed and they kept the land in the family until he retired and sold it. That's the way America was once.

In England, when they talk about football players' salaries, they don't speak in terms of the total dollar amount of the contract, except when it comes to the summer and winter transfer windows. When they do talk about player salaries, they talk about how much they are paid PER WEEK. I've heard some players get paid 350,000 pounds a week. When you see an athlete's salary put that way, it's a new perspective. I mean, good for the athlete; it's a short career. But these guys are now making life-changing generational wealth money playing football in Europe. While a war in Ukraine drones on.

During the 1899 Kentucky gubernatorial election, Goebel divided his party with his political tactics to win the nomination for governorship at a time when Kentucky Republicans were gaining strength, having elected the party's first governor four years previously. These dynamics led to a close contest between Goebel and William S. Taylor. In the politically chaotic climate that resulted, Goebel was declared as having won the election, but was assassinated and died after three days in office. Everyone charged in connection with the murder was either acquitted or eventually pardoned, and the identity of his assassin remains unknown.

The effects will be delayed. Even a short term strike will cause disruptions down stream. If you remember the supply chain disruptions in 2021, those didn't become apparent in the beginning. The media will down play it or ignore it if it happens.

While walking in, I noted that a pickup truck parked out front had a KelTec decal in the rear window. There were no other customers there, so I figured it must belong to the guy running the grill. So I asked, 'Is that your pickup out there? 'Nope', he replied, and waved his spatula at one of the waitresses, 'S'ers'.

Beautiful country but I doubt you are eager to return. If I'm wrong tell me when you are heading back.

Yes, beautiful country, many great people but as a collective it was toast when the ANC took over. Previously we never suffered from blackout, brownouts, etc. We came back because my late wife wanted to come home after almost 20 years for her and we saw no future for our two young girls.

I was fortunate to visit South Africa a number of times. Beautiful country and lovely people.

Communist destroy everything like locusts. It's a tragedy what they've done to SA and if we don't wake up soon they will do here and there is nowhere to go if we fall.
