Happy Tuesday evening. The debate is on at 9pm Eastern, on Disney-owned ABC. CBS says it will also be simulcasting the debate, and Pluto will show it on their CBS News channel (In the News + Opinion menu).

I'll put up a debate thread at 8:45 Eastern.

Aw, poor old lizard is crusty.

Staged video, but cute enough. I like the bridge. Or what would you call that?

Dog doing his best to empty the pool for winter.

A triple-glitch in the Matrix.

Cute dog is a little clingy.

Family photo.

ICYMI: Real life Bambi and Thumper play date.

A big smile for you.

Then again, I wasn't watching the June debate either, and that worked out pretty well. So maybe if I don't watch, we'll get a similar result?

13 As all wait for the showdown in Philly. Werner offers a brief vista into his past that may prove diverting

One asked who was John Galt. Who indeed. Werner could actually tell you the answer, but it would be violating the confidence shared with him by the pistoleer God-Empress Ayn Rand. Some here might remember my first meeting with the Objectivist scribe, but I have not yet related our second encounter. Unfortunately, she remembered Werner's phone number, and so was I contacted in the early morning hours at one of those times it is said nothing good can happen. This is foreshadowing, ja?

Groggy, I answered - Werner here, this had better be important or you shall answer to my aluminum bat. That familiar voice spoke up, with clicking noises in the background that I immediately recognized as the game of Russian Roulette that she regularly played against herself. Yo, blood, said Ayn, we goin' ridin', Word, I inquired. You think I'm stuttering, bitch? was the rejoinder. Be on the curb out front or Ayn may have to pop a cap. You feelin' me? Foh shizzle, I immediately siad, One does not refuse Frau Rand, especially if she knows where you live.

18 a, okay. Soon I was gripping the God Bar in Ayn's Bentley as we roared through the streets of New York. By dint of long-term familiarity, most cops and civilians knew to avoid her. Two NYPD cruisers briefly attempted to chase her down, and her evasive driving left them crashed and scattered like something out of Grand Theft Auto. Ayn, I finally asked, what is our mission?

Light me, Playa, she said with her familiar menacing grin. Werner can only say that the tip of her cigarette holder did not hold a tobacco product. I complied, and she took a deep drag and said, Looters and Wreckers got to pay, and the Rand ain't gonna miss out on gettin' her Benjamins. It soon became apparent that we had launched upon a crime spree across the American Midwest. How this comported with her philosophy, just as the question of why we used the idiom reported here must, I fear, remain mysteries.

With the early morning Sun marking our way, Ayn's Bentley crashed through the foyer window of an otherwise peaceful Ohio Savings and Loan. Frau Rand climbed out and let off a burst of her Thompson submachine gun, shouting What up, bitches, gives Ayn her greenbacks. One more post, ach.

25 My function was to collect the proceeds of Ayn's strong-arm robberies, and I acted as required. One day bled into the next, and the great American Midwest became the domains of Empress Rand. I am not being poetic, she literally required she be addressed in that fashion. For reasons unclear to Werner, at many points I heard the rousing blue grass strains of Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. The police were hapless as well as helpless, and an attempt to lure us into an ambush similar to that in the Warren Beatty/Faye Dunaway movie whose title and subject escapes Werner resulted in a high-speed ramming and a laughing Eat my dust, Fuzz!

It was memorable, and Ayn demanded that we get a second set of matching tattoos. Finally, when virtually no bank retained any of its currency, the tour came to an end. Because it was Frau Rand, there were no BOLOs, and the FBI noped out of things. She dropped me outside my humble home in NYC and tossed me a few sheafs of dollars, saying Yo, Playa, buy youself sumpin' pretty. Don't say Ayn never give you nuttin, Shorty/ Why am I talking like this? Like I know? I told her. Anyways Ayn, you got the juice now. Bye, fool, said she and she was gone.

30 So is it that Werner has the odd bit of PTSD, and for the sake of prudence, does not visit the Midwest. The nightmares continue still. If only Werner could say that this was his last interaction with Ayn Rand, but that was not to be. On the film set for Fitzcarraldo, I had lapsed into slumber, partly due to the heat and partly from the litany of Kinski bitching about someone needing to free him from the anaconda. A few forceful nudges and a slap to the face roused me to see her familiar visage looming above me. "Sup, Empress, I asked. With that smile that all sensible beings knew was a signal to make a run for it (even Klaus's anaconda was frightened away), she answered Shorty, there's this Mengele bastard in Argentina that has a date with Ayn's Gurkha Kukri, and then we gon' to Bolivia cos the Pinkertons lookin' for us Stateside. This was followed by another ringing pimp slap and a brief kiss on the nose. In a state of near-complete terror, I followed after her. Kinski wept and demanded that I remain. Be of good cheer, stripling, I told him. Papa got to go to work. Two months later would find us holed up in a cantina, facing the Bolivian Army. Ach.

Little known is the story behind the film Love Letters. Ayn seduced and abandoned Joseph Cotten, leaving the man in such a state he was actually drunk on the set during the shooting of the London party scene. Rand’s smoldering and domineering personality alone so altered Jennifer Jones that she became thereafter an icon for homosexuals. Don’t even ask in what state she left King Vidor after script rehearsals. Let’s just say Atlas shrugged but the burden lingered.

The best fantasy or sci-fi (also literature) can be. I am trying to remember, but I think it was CRT (Christopher R Taylor, commenter who I have not seen in a good long while) who said that sword and sorcery fantasy was like romance novels for boys. And romance in the Three Musketeers sense. Good. Evil. Actual romance. Give them that thrill that Florence King described as a specifically male thing when they hear or read some Man take a stand against impossible odds.

Posted by: electronic means

This is a good question. Werner has considered Magical Realism as a technique, but his Teutonic soul is stubborn. Also, the Magical Realism schtick is so thick on the ground in Latin America, that Werner feels he must flee it. It is not unlike the literarydevice of the labyrinth. If Werner comes across one further employment of that metaphor, it shall be answered by his aluminum bat. I have already put Borges and Gabriel Garci Marques on notice.

To me there's isn't a huge difference. SF builds a different world based on tech growth and cultures based on them, Modern Fantasy is similar, new cultures based on a tech of magic. If they build a world that makes sense, and have characters working out a good story then it works.

For what it is worth LOTR has hardly any magicy stuff relative to DnD or computer game stuff. Its built into the world and the races.

Because of the stress of jab genocide and house renovations, I said screw it, went to one of our 2 stop lights town with 3 legal pot shops, told them I never wanted to smoke but would love something to test for my nerves. Still an experiment. I'm working on my athletic build which means skinny which means the munchies are bad.

Anyways, by my 3rd, 10mg thc capsule, I pretty much collapse in a joyful peaceful slumber.

So, what I'm wondering is are my 4 strong boy beers where I've just started the 3rd, and my thc capsules which I know from experimentation......man....the world misses actual experimentation.....are enough to deaden me inside after 2 to 4 of them.....are the strong beers and pills actually enough to get me to sit through a rigged debate listening to Kamala.

I mean we have clipshows for a reason.

I'll open my third beer and see if that gives me clarity. Other options are slasher and horror flicks, my just bought classic 'Zork' text game where I'm going to figure out the maze after the troll or groups of Japanese biologically female adult pornstars in sexy uniforms....

Choices...

I don't really mind because this is just Tolkien's way of saying, "Welcome to my world".

You have to remember when it was originally written.

The popular reading public wouldn't have the same almost constant saturation in fantasy and SF. So, A bit of an intro to convince his readers of the solid reality of Middle Earth made since.

Nowadays, Ol' JRR could say "Okay once there were some Hairy Footed Midgets and we're off!"

And the readers would tag along.

249 Little known is the story behind the film Love Letters.
Posted by: electronic means

Ayn left a mark, usually bloody, on all that she encountered. She throttled Tiny Tim, for example. Werner refers to the fey Sixties entertainer here, although Frau Rand would not be above doing the same to the Dickensian character, as she considered him a Looter, and complained often about A Christmas Carol, feeling that the hero Ebenezer Scrooge was violated for his Objectivist pursuits. I remember with some amusement that the much-vaunted Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, got her start and her distinctive attire from cos-playing Ayn Rand. It was a big thing back then, and Werner is relieved that it is in the past.

251 Ja, the Bavarian fun-fest. With Ayn, it is how many can she not hoist, and Werner has yet to see that. She finds Lederhosen a joke, and is not above shattering her Bier stein and squaring off against any who wear such. Honestly, Werner does not blame her for this. The Dirndl-clad Jungfraus hide rather than approach her table. Ach.

As I said then: looks like an Underwater Easter Island featuring John Brennan's visage.

I remember when The New Republic was Neo-Con, back in the Eighties. If not Neo-Con, at least adjacent. Does anyone else remember?

294 I hope Trump works cat into everything he says.

"The open border has been CATaclysmic for our country"

"You have no border policy. You must be CATatonic if you haven't seen the CATastrophe this is causing."

296 We're talking Ayn Rand, right ?
Posted by: Eyes Open

Ja, we speak of Ayn, the indomitable force that the fabric of Space-Time itself cannot prevail against. When Oppenheimer made his noted quote, "I am become Shiva, destroyer of worlds," he was in truth thinking of Ayn. Thinking, and likely soiling himself. The savage goddess Kali regularly checks under her bed to make sure that Ayn is not lurking there, knowing that it is only a question of time before her fears become true. As an avatar of Objectivism, her influence carries backward as well as forward. The madness of Nietzsche came from his realization that she would step onto the world stage; the prophet Zaratustra took his own life when an epiphany revealed to him that she would erase the distinction between Ahura Mazda and Ahriman, and all should weep and despair.

Ja, that Rand.

298 287 I’m not gonna watch the debate, will scroll through the thread after virtual pinochle with the old men (my father and uncles) as usual. It’s more fun and less stressful.

299 I knew a German guy who was a kid in WWII. His family lived in the Sudetenland, I think. After the war they had to go back to Germany. He said they were not well liked by the other Germans, who called them potato bugs as an insult.

He didn't talk about that time much, but he did say that they were very lean times. He said they would catch cats and eat them.

302 You need to read about the Aztecs if you think all religions are good. There are also plenty of bad things in surviving religions, all organizations run by men can go astray, as all men can.

I used to try to persuade people ... after 9/11 ... that this whole "
Freedom of Religion" thing had run its course. Because we just got slapped by the second Religion / Social union. The first was Japan.

I lost. We lost. Religion of Peace my ass.

And now we're listening to Freedom of Speech as to why certain races and sexes ... White and Male ... have had it too good for too long.

Oh ... then you mean Ayn ... the chick that wrote an entire book about how she screwed great men. And hence, she was great by the screwing.

Werner speaks of Ayn as a warning. As is said regarding war, one may not be interested in Ayn, but she is interested in you. If she approaches, one should flee. Werner came to this realization at great cost and much suffering.

315 Got back from Bible Study, forgot the debate was even on. Peaked at the debate thread. Hard to tell how it's going from it. It's all over the place, opinion wise. I'm watching a replay of the NASCAR race in Atlanta on Sunday. The debate won't change how I vote anyway. Trump could have walked out in a speedo, holding a crackpipe, screaming 'I AM THE LIZARD KING', and I'd still vote for him.
