THE MORNING RANT: A Police Department - in Hurricane Country - is Getting EV Patrol Cars; How Many Ways Can This Go Wrong?
Rather than choosing the typical Ford, Dodge, or Chevy cars DPD typically purchases, they have made the decision to invest in 4 new Tesla Model Y vehicles. These vehicles arrived on Friday, Aug. 23, and will be in full operation before the end of December 2024. The Tesla Model Y vehicles are a part of the city’s electric vehicle pilot program and are expected to help reduce costs for both the Police Department and the community. In addition, the vehicles are expected to reduce environmental impacts.Mr. Kraut does not live in Douglas, but he lives in another nearby town that was hit hard by Hurricane Michael, which was still a Category 1 hurricane when it passed through in October 2018. The absurdity of using an electric vehicle as a police cruiser goes way beyond storm-related power outages, and Mr. Kraut covers those issues well. Here is what he wrote:
• Who doesn’t have time to charge their car if there is an emergency – Police
• Who responds when there is a disaster in the community, most of the time involving severe weather down in these parts – Police
• What happens during periods of severe weather – the power is lost
• What can’t be charged without power – EV
To demonstrate the absurdity of EVs as first responders, Hurricane Michael hit our town as a Cat 1. We were without power for 5 days and friends of ours were 7-10 days. Below is a map of Michael’s path showing the county in question. While they [the town of Douglas] did not get hit directly, they are close enough to the Atlantic and the Gulf that odds are, at the least, a tropical storm will hit that area, impacting power supply for days.
2. Functionality • Who drives at high speeds to answer calls or stop criminals – Police
• Who does PIT maneuvers to stop said criminals – Police
• How well will the battery pack of an EV stand up to the impacts required for PIT maneuvers and other high speed police functions?
• In the event of a successful PIT maneuver, what if the battery pack is compromised and the car quickly becomes engulfed in flames?
• What if the battery pack is unknowingly damaged during use and the EV burns down the parking lot with internal combustion police cruisers?
• What if the battery pack goes up in flames due to unseen damage when the EV is adjacent to a firetruck? Firetrucks cost $500,000 minimum.
3. Cost Savings • I know and work with a lot of police personnel. They may drive 100 miles in a shift, but they are sitting idle for hours and hours. Are they willing to bet the life of a police officer that the battery power will last an entire shift?
• I do not see any real cost savings with an EV. They talk about fuel, but they don’t mention the cost of charging. Plus the added cost of special EV tires. Plus any scheduled maintenance probably can’t be done in the rural county, meaning the car will have to be shipped somewhere.
Anyway, just my two cents. If this madness is happening down here, then it will probably come to my town next.

The "patrol" vehicles are a bit more concerning. I'd normally not worry too much about the issue of needing all your squad card out at once, for extended periods of time, but a quick search says Douglas, GA is only 11,000 people, so their department can't be THAT large. Still, those Tesla chargers are pretty fast, so I assume they could charge the normal 100ish mile patrol during shift changes or when writing reports.
The bigger concern for me is damage. Police cars get bumped up quite a bit, and it doesn't take too serious a smack to risk damaging the battery and causing all sorts of problems.
I went to the Douglas City PD site to see how big their Department is. It didn't say, but they did have a picture of their Chief. Reminds me of Brian Stelter lol.

It is unclear how many cars DPD has in total and what the usage of these vehicles would be.
I note they say "patrol and administrative." So may not be intended for PIT maneuvers and the batteries are impact rated to some extent or else the cars wouldn't be approved for use on the road. I see Teslas throughout Florida so the infrastructure for charging and maintenance definitely exists in the area. Fast charging is not significantly longer than stopping for gas.
A Model Y costs about what a Tahoe police package does, but the Tesla probably costs a bit more to add police items to as the Tahoe is already built for it.
I am sure some Federal dollars are involved in an EV Pilot Progam so that's objectionable, of course, but if they are going to do it, I think Tesla is a better platform than any of the other EVs out there.

Stock tire size for a 2024 Tahoe is P265-65-18 LT (light truck) tire.
Stock tire size for a Model Y is 255-45-19 XL (extra load)
In short, yes, they make tires that will support the weight of a Tesla with police equipment.
The Model Y is closer to an SUV which is why I have been using a Tahoe for comparison, but comparing to a Dodge Charger, the Charger curb weight is about 200 lbs more than a Model Y. And this is the last year it is being produced.

Oh I don't hate her! But I can't stand Baldwin, and they are kind of a package deal. It would be weird to have her character without the husband.
(The only thing about her that's odd is she started the Geena Davis Institute, to promote women and DEI in film. But on the scale of Marxism in Hollywood that's pretty tame)
I did see Beetlejuice the musical. They made the Geena Davis character black, and they were repressed normies until Beetlejuice helped them get their inner weird on. It was a weird take. But they upped the Lydia backstory and explained more about her mom, and created a better dynamic between her and her dad and stepmom. That part of it was really good. I have no idea how much Burton was involved in the musical.

E0 is hard to find in my area. The convenience store I go to for Exxon has E0, though it's not an Exxon-branded fuel, so I don't get my .10/gal. discount on that. I compromise by loading half a tank of E0 and half of E10.
The E0 has not dropped in price, though the E10 has. There's now a .60 differential between E10 and E0 at that station. Probably it does not pay me to use the E0; but I'd like them to keep selling it, so I use it every week or two.

It does require a heavy-duty tire; just to tote the battery around. All tires have a max load rating, but electric cars tend to load the tires closer to their max rating that do fuel-driven cars.

Best case I can see is if EVs can be the conduits from a factory to a boat/train (when you are literally just driving from one side of the parking lot to the other) - self-driving would actually be the more desired thing for this b/c if you ever watch some of the logistics of major factories to shipping lanes, this is it. They have 100s of folks driving 1 mile onto ships that are literally only through parking lot...

I don't buy this. It is a heavy midsize. The cargo capacity they cite is a bit misleading, and they are largely not apples to apples comparison.
I've seen cargo in use on a Model Y. It certainly appears smaller than my Highlander with third row seating. The numbers cited on Tesla's site appear to be equivalent to Tahoe cargo behind the third row.
More appropriate comparison than 2 nearly full-size V8 cars are probably the Subaru Outback or the class crossing Crosstrek, which is about 1/2 ton lighter than your cited Model Y.

I am an "all of the above" kind of guy when it comes to technology choices. Consider airplanes - jets or props? Trains - electric, or diesel-electric? Ships - sail, steam, gas turbine? Forklifts - gas, diesel, propane, or electric? Why are some cars gas, and some diesel?
Electric cars have a place in the ecosystem because they work. In some ways they are better than gas cars, in some ways worse. Whether its worth your while depends on your use case and business case.

A Model Y costs about $50k. A Chevy Tahoe costs about $50k. Do you know the maintenance costs for EVs? Everything I read shows that the maintenance costs are significantly lower for EVs.
The cost for charging v fueling depends on the variable costs of electricity and gas. I do think the savings on this are over estimated.

I like them. They're reminiscent of a 70s TV show version of what a future car would look like. That said, I think the problem with the Cybertruck is that Elon tried to rethink the concept of a truck from first principles, and it missed. There's a reason trucks basically look the way they do. The perception of limited space in the back for stuff is a turn-off for the average person, I think.

Don't skip the part about battery replacement. Because you cannot amortize that cost out without looking at it sideways to come up with better maintenance costs over the long run.
EV advocates merely suggest passing that cost off to the next person, which is fine. It is a free market. But you cannot simply ignore that cost in a cost over life of the vehicle comparison.

I've seen cargo in use on a Model Y. It certainly appears smaller than my Highlander with third row seating. The numbers cited on Tesla's site appear to be equivalent to Tahoe cargo behind the third row.
More appropriate comparison than 2 nearly full-size V8 cars are probably the Subaru Outback or the class crossing Crosstrek, which is about 1/2 ton lighter than your cited Model Y.

EV advocates merely suggest passing that cost off to the next person, which is fine. It is a free market. But you cannot simply ignore that cost in a cost over life of the vehicle comparison.

I don't know that resale is factored into the TCO on government vehicles as they don't amortize. Old cop cars go to auction in whatever shape they are in. If the batteries have a ten year life cycle - then passing that cost on to the next owner is exactly what the police department is going to do. It is a point that it is not often considered. But ever pay to replace the engine in a gas car?

There is no doubt about new whizz-bang engines needing costly maintenance. You add complexity, you add failure modes, you add cost. This is all borne by regulation, regulations which keep truly economical vehicles out of U.S. markets, sadly.
But again, you're talking F150 ecoboost versus midsize crossover. Crosstrek is more appropriate here.

WunderKraut wrote a lot but he obviously didn’t quite thought about this issue; the obvious tell is when he writes about “recharge times” (which can be as low as 200 miles of range in 15 minutes) and for which any fleet buyer can plan around.
In fact, I bet that the Douglas Police department probably did their due diligence to find out the pros/cons of going with EV and the information is available to the public. Why not find that out and share that information instead of another anti-EV hit piece?

- Fed pays for the cars under the Green Nude Eel (Inflation creation America reduction act)
- Fed pays the cost of chargers, with lots of graft to go to local contractors
- Utilities cut special deal on electricity under their mandate for encourage EV (Look at the deals in FLA -- someone is paying for that, well the ratepayers.)
- Police unions love it since it means their guys only have to work 4 hours a day! When they come to their senses and buy ICE again, the unions will demand more pay for increased workload.

A gasoline car can be turned around in a matter of minutes, so one car can service consecutive shifts.
The electric cruiser will have to be put on a charger, so an additional, fully charged, cruiser will have to be available at the start of the next shift.
So, not only do the cars cost twice as much, you will have to have twice as many of them. So it winds up costing four times as much.
