9 I rescued a turtle at the lake last week. Second time. The first one was this larger ancient looking one that I helped nudge across the road towards the lake. Used the shelallegh to help push her. This one was smaller. I had to go back to it and got there in time to let a guy know about it. Once he got past it, it headed right on off the road. I don't think anyone really wants to run over a turtle.

31 I had to go to a new laptop a little while ago. Well, new in the sense that I bought it years ago but didn't use it until now because my old laptop kept hanging on. Went from Windows 7 to 10. I really miss 7.

So with 10 there are little messages on the task bar. Sometimes it's the temp, sometimes it says humid tomorrow or something like that. Right now it says 'sunset coming'. Really? Ugh, right next to that message is the time, and most people don't live in windowless boxes.

I know Bill Gates hasn't had anything to do with windows in a long time, but there's never a reason not to say fuck Bill Gates.

64 This might be better suited for the book thread, but if you dig around the intertubes you can find the JSC Oral History project, and they interviewed all the astronauts and big administrators and all the NASA guys and the rest of it, back room fido and trajectory guys.

What's really cool, is there was this huge need for engineers, when it spooled up. The whole field was brand new, so they made it up as they went along. Basically you graduated with an aeronautics or physics degree, bada bing - you got hired on the spot, pretty much sight unseen.

Then they started dropping these guys into really super high important jobs, because there wasn't anybody else. Besides, you've been doing that kind of thing for 3 or 4 years, or you were a range safety officer for some Army missile. Well now you're a RSO for a Saturn V, that kind of thing. Just about everyone they interviewed couldn't believe what they were doing, and were very grateful, thought it was the best job in the world and say "I doubt anything like that will ever happen again"

And go on to talk about how fracked up everything is now, and why. Too much regulation, bureaucratic oversight. Way too much.

Posted by: Ben Had at September 02, 2024 07:57 PM (WbH4L)

when I had three cats, they had been together since they were kittens and they would switch depending on who got there first. I adopted another old cat and she wants to be fed in a particular place or she will walk off in a huff.
Then my old tortie started going blind and could be scared off her dish easy so I started feeding her in the kitchen by herself, and then when one of the other older cats died we got a young one who was a bit shy so he got fed in the kitchen as well.
depending on how they feel they will decide to bolt their food and push another cat of his or her dish, which I keep an eye on, but generally don't interfere, except for the tortie.
The cat that died would be pretty pushy about taking over other cats' food as he was the alpha, so I took to holding back the empty can, and sliding it out to him as a treat to distract him.

I had a lot of fun with my hippy uncle. I mean, a real kind of 60s hippy pretty much. He was all sorts of apocolyptic about this when it kicked off. I was "War is Not Healthy For Children and other Living Things" and "Give Peace A Chance" and I thought he was going to stroke out. LOL

(maybe 10 yrs tops) It makes me sad, but I think I have decided I am going to have to become the old lady with a little fluffy ankle biter . I just can't imagine my life without a dog.

95 For people keeping up at home

NATO.int, Sept 2023:

"Opening remarks by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the joint meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs ...

The background was that President Putin declared in the autumn of 2021, and actually sent a draft treaty that they wanted NATO to sign, to promise no more NATO enlargement. That was what he sent us. And was a pre-condition for not invade Ukraine. Of course we didn't sign that...

This is this is good for the Nordic countries. It's good for Finland and Sweden. And it's also good for NATO. And it demonstrates that when President Putin invaded a European country to prevent more NATO, he's getting the exact opposite. "

There's a so-called Rainbow Mountain in China that has bright colors similar to the photo here, but most of the on-line photos are obviously photoshopped. It's a big Chinese practice to "enhance" the looks of places in China to build up tourism.

107 Yes it was, that word was specifically coined as a slur. Fact. "Isolationist"

It is still used today, in exactly the same way. A savvy politico might use "Non interventionist" as a way around this.

As a matter of fact "America First" has a history in the lead up to World War II as well. Lindbergh provided valuable intelligence on Nazi airpower by taking a tour, and admittedly he was not a fan of going to war in Europe. But that was the sentiment. I'm not passing judgment, just pointing out there was not a lot of sentiment for war, and this was how they "nudged" people back then. Just like today.

the main pretext for the UK entry into the war was to protect the Poles' independence from the Germans, and after saber rattling and building up in France, then 8 years of warfare spanning the globe, the British gave Poland and all the Polish fighters to Stalin, who shot them and all the Polish nationalist Hitler missed. It would have been cheaper to just admit the UK couldn't do anything and let it go in the first place.
But this is not an acceptable take because reasons.

119 It's worth remembering that the premiere folk band of the WWII era (and dedicated Commies), The Almanac Singers, featuring Pete Seeger, were singing the praises of Hitler right up to the start of Operation Barbarossa. At that time they had just released an album (boxed set of 78's, I guess) with songs praising the Nazis, and urging America to stay out of the war. When the Nazis marched into Russia, they sent out an appeal to their fans to return all those box sets in exchange for new ones that condemned American isolationism. Oopsie!

135 Naples, FL, as solidly R as you can get, has a woman mayor, former executive for Lancome and another cosmetic company, quite attractive 61 year old blonde, she's tooling home from a party in her 911 late last Wednesday, gets arrested a couple blocks from home in a neighborhood of $25M homes, tagged for DUI, claims to have been hit by another car at a roundabout a block back.

The cops said later it was a roadrage incident, she the rager.

The story written in the Naples Daily News by some guy named Rodriguez, goes on and on, paragraph after paragraph, giving every single detail of the stop, her various tests (walk this line, bend over and pick up the penny, etc.) and reports about everything she said to the officers.

Naples Daily News is a leftist rag that runs a few local stories, reports heavily on all things real estate, and anything statewide or national comes from the Associated Press.

Now imagine a reporter for any city rag anywhere, reporting a DUI stop done on a democrat mayor.

I have a nice yard and woods for my dog to run in, but as soon as he's done his business he goes inside the garage and waits to be let back in the house. Comfort and leisure are his primary motivations.

There's a shitload of mineral wealth out there, it's all locked up now. No can touch.

Supposebly, one of the more interesting historical mines was sniffed out on Air Force bombing range or somesuch. Chocolate mountains maybe?

Posted by: Common Tater at September 02, 2024 08:41 PM (GfEyD)

Estimates vary but the tailings in Virginia City/Gold Hill/Silver city contain as much if not more gold and silver than was mined in VC during the Comstock Load time. As little as 20% of the available ore was ever touched. There are 15,000 prospects around me.
That being said it now sits under a mountain of red tape by the Clinton designation as a "Nation Historic Site".
There are still old school mines active up there but only for tourists to be able to say they own some of the Comstock Load, which I do.
I was buying ounces in ingot form a lot for a while. There is also Comstock Mining but I'm not sure how they are doing these days.
VC is a weird place I would recommend everyone visit once. Once the richest place in the world. Now a barely functioning tourist destination. Old VC is gone, lot's of Calfagtardians reside there now. But you'll "get it" just walking around. I still love it.

This is wisdom. Werner remembers fondly his Deutscher Schäferhund, Inspector Furry MacBarksalot. Ja, Deutscher Schäferhund. What, do you think we call them German Shepherds? This would provoke confusion and consternation, especially among Deutsch pastoralists. Werner needs not a shepherd's crook introduced to his cranium by an enraged herder of livestock. They are militant and prone to anger at the slightest of offenses, not unlike Spin City's Michael J. Fox. Do not get on that guy's radar, for there is no relenting until he has discharged his wrath.

Werner maintains that felines do not just require servants - they demand an entourage, and thus are we all enlisted. Ah, but their whimsy and antic japeries are irresistible cute, even to those of us who feel the Void always somewhere near us. If Werner is to be honest, however, the Void can be confused with sinus congestion. Or Wednesdays. Hump Day confronts us with the realization that the lingering Doom that holds us in thrall is but at a midpoint, and the full weight of the disaster is yet to unfold. That said, Werner is not immune to the TGIF sentiment. That, and the celebrated blooming onions of Outback Steakhouse.
