Hobby Thread - Sept 14, 2024 [TRex]

20240827-23hobbylobby1.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the horde in this little corner of the interweb. Instead of featuring a specific hobby, a spin of the Ace of Spades wheel of hobbies has come up with a theme of places where you hobby for this week.

Where do you do your hobbying? Do you have a dedicated space? Do you have a workbench or desk where you build, customize, maintain, repair, etc.? Did you make something custom? Did you cobble together odds and ends to make a spot for you to tinker? Is your space of choice in your basement, garage, guest room, shed, or elsewhere? Have you built and re-built over the years as you learned more what you wanted from your space? Do you have a wonderful space that is piled high with stuff that makes it unusable? Do you have an ideal space that you envision someday? Is it ideal because of the working area, accessibility to tools, storage, etc. or is it ideal because of the view and environment? Even if your hobbying happens elsewhere (SOTA and fishing, I am looking at you), do you have a working place to store and maintain your equipment?

Is your space something that you brought home from a working career or that incorporates aspects from your working life? Are you surrounded by shelving or do you need a place with a view? Are you a writer with the ability to be mobile with your laptop or notebook? Where do you like to write? Do you have a dedicated spot or do you like to move? Does your hobby require custom equipment - like a potting wheel for pottery? Are you a painter with a studio?

Or do you take over space on the kitchen table, dining room table or other household areas (not that there is anything wrong with that)?

TRex is again detailed for duty elsewhere in locations undisclosed, so looking for horde help to make this work and honor hobby thread etiquette. We are here to talk about places where hobbying happens. We are looking for places used by an individual rather than spaces in museums or businesses. Hobby spaces do not need to be elaborate - just suited to the user. As usual, keep this thread limited to hobbies. Politics and current events can wait for other threads. Play nice. Do not be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

Lurker in good standing Patches sent these photos of his scale model building workspace. Impressive variety - jets of all types, race cars, road cars, reference materials, and more. Unlike a lot of photos of workspaces on the interwebs, this space actually looks like it is used and enjoyed. It is a proper mix of organization and chaos.

2 Writing doesn't take up much space.

We have dedicated space of pretty much one full room for our lapidary and jewelry putterings. We also have access to a dedicated educational center for the same things.

Carpentry, gardening, and landscaping works we accomplish in our basement, garage, and outdoors.

9 My hobby space is a garage office. Previous owner of the house turned 2/3 of 1 side of the garage into a office (rumor is that he was a retired Army dentist and was going to run a home dental clinic. Creepy). Garage office has about a dozen electrical outlets mounted 3 feet off the floor, A/C and heat and a closet with shelves for my books (over 1100 at last count). The main space is about 10x20. I have a government surplus desk and chair from the 1970s (HEAVY steel), various racks to hold my models, extra bookshelves for reference materials and a TNR/garage cat that will wander in and hang out with me if I leave the door open

16 I adding two 12V cigarette lighter plugs to my truck's electrical system (camping/outdoor rig). They both have a 15A rating, so that should be plenty for the CPAP and the 12V refrigerator/freezer. They will be run through a switch panel to a 12v 300AH LiFePo battery.

17 The spare bedroom is my craft space. Can't get to the workbench anymore, because the room is now stuffed with things from Dad's house that we really don't have space for. We desperately need to get rid of *A LOT* of stuff!

Also-- I'm jealous of all those "hobby rooms" in the photos. Each of them is larger than my living room; each of them has more natural light than my whole house.

18 Afternoon, hobby folk,

If my writing (which is in abeyance right now, not sure why) is a hobby, then my space is my bedroom. I have a library table that my father brought home one afternoon when I was about to start school: three slabs of real wood, the top and the two uprights. You screw them together and it stands, and has stood for six decades. It was our dining table, model-building table, homework table, etc., until I left home. When my mother passed away I took it with me from her place, along with one of the wooden captain's chairs that went with it.

The chair has a cushion in it. The desk holds a lamp, a printer, and my monitor, keyboard, and mouse, with the desktop computer (a PC, Windows XP) down on the floor to one side.

20 Maybe, arts are painting, writing, music
Crafts are models, knitting, woodworking

21 I got in an argument/discussin with Wayne Coombs the My Tiki guy from Cocoa Beach about his craft. He took exception and said what he did was Art.

I said that Art produces nothing useful outside of enjoyment as opposed to Crafting where the end result has some useful purpose.

My contention was that Tiki's were used to frighten away evil sprits and therefore making them was a craft.

I was just trying to piss him off a little.

23 I use a spare bedroom too, although it only has a little window. Got an Ott light for the darker corner. I fixed it all up for a quilting room when I retired--flannel design wall, cutting table, ironing board, fabric drawers, my two sewing machines, and also a table with drawing materials.

But now I'm so pressured at having all this, that sometimes I'm scared to go in and get going, lol. I don't just saunter in every morning and quilt happily for hours...I do have projects going, but often feel reluctant and slow, or too tired. Anyone else fight this? Acedia, I guess it is.

24 When my wife and I were looking for a house in 1974, one of the requirements was a basement. Growing up, my dad always had his basement workshop and workbench. It's where he would fix things, including my broken toys when I was little. By the time I was ten, he built me my own workbench, a bench that would become my space for building my electronic projects or repairing old radios, and other assorted electronic equipment. I wanted the same space in our home.

Our home is a ranch with a full basement, so I was able to build a nice workbench within the first month we were in the house. I still build or restore electronic equipment, but it's my little "getaway" at times. It's where all my hobbies come together. A man has to have a workshop.

I have a Resmed Airsense 11. Resmed also sells a pricey 12v adapter for the 11. It pulls around 95w, so well within the 12v 15A envelope. I went with the pricey Resmed adapter because of the reliability factor. It works great and I save about 10% on battery usage because I don't have to run the 11 from an inverter.

I'd like a basement too, partly for storage and partly for whatever. My plan is to turn a second bedroom into a study or den, if I don't actually have one in the house I eventually buy. That might wind up being on the second floor.

28 Based upon my 3d printing hobby, I'm still offering 3d printed name badges to those attending the Texas MoMe. I'm offering them free of charge as a way of supporting our community, and that offer stands until I get tired of messing with it. I'm making them such that they'll be held on by magnets, and each badge features the words "AoSHQ TX MoMe 2024" and the Ace of Spades logo plus whichever name(s) you want people to call you by.

At least I hope they'll be held on by magnets. The one I made a couple of weeks ago stays on my T-shirt pretty good.

Anyway, as I said last time, if you're interested in details, you should be able to send me an email if you click on my nic.

I bought that late Fifties Pyro cowpuncher figure plastic assembly kit in 2005. It's still sitting in my kitchen closet. In my defense, having cats makes it very difficult to consider any kind of painting or model-building!

34 I use big, clear tackleboxes for my beads and findings. Makes it easy to find just what I need without fuss.

There must be 30 of them or more: seed beads of various sizes, semi-precious chips & rounds (like garnet, moonstone, fresh water pearls), just all kinds of great little treasures I've collected since... grade school, if I'm honest.

It has all become more of a *collection* than *craft supply*

35 Writing is an itch I've been scratching lately. Completed a screenplay based on a book called, "The Ride of Her Life". I showed it to someone at my church. 38 JQ, it sounds wonderful. Nothing wrong with having a collection. I remember being told as a quilter not to feel guilty about buying fabric just because we love it, because there are those who collect fabric just for its beauty, not for any use.

40 I painted inmy basement for nearly 20 years with 2 cats in the house.
Worse was wanting to be in front but lap time was fine. And had to get covered water bottle to clean brushes as caught Sugar drinking out of it once.

41 I don't have any space in our house that is just mine. My desk at which I occasionally WFH is in the corner of the front room, which means the kids feel free to interrupt me constantly if I am home. But eventually I'll have some space where I can have all my books and all my stitching stuff and my paint and easel and so on. It'll be so nice to have a space of my own, and maybe even a space the others in the house will respect!

(The lack of respect for my stuff in this house drives me nuts...I can't have anything that is MINE that my husband and kids will leave alone. Especially the 8yo. I swear I tell him DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF at least 3 times a day.)

43 I have a work bench I made with 4x4 legs, 2x4 cross members, and 5/8 inch plywood. It's complete overkill for light electronics work, which was the point. I can drop just about anything on that bench and it will not move.

So of course a week after I finished it someone asked me to look at their 50 inch LCD TV and I had to use the kitchen table.

44 skywch--

My neighbor quilts and does machine embroidery. She has a huge, glorious room for her work-table and sewing machines.

And she uses a china hutch! for storing all those fabrics. Mainly fat quarters, I think. All sorted by color & composition. She shrugged & admitted that she didn't care much about china & crystal, but couldn't bear to dispose of the heirloom furniture. (and it IS a beautiful antique)

Oh, I know how this goes! Only have hubby, but he's... enough...

For some reason, I can't keep pencils or a tape measure. They just disappear into his shop and then (if I get caught reclaiming them) I get hollered at for "taking his stuff" LOL, it's an ongoing battle.

46 Wow. I have a finished basement AKA The Man Cave that has the fishing gear, hunting gear and armory in one easy to maintain area, it took some planning, but works well now that it's dialed in. The garage of course is self explanatory, my toolbox lives there along with the latest toy.

47 Excellent post, thank you! I will have to go back and read/watch the links, as well as the comments!

I love that Disney desk.

I am always looking for ways to organize/"efficientize" my areas.

When I was a wee lad, I was in an accident and had to wear what they call a body cast. I had a one-piece cast from my waist down to my toes on my left leg, and down to my knee on the right leg, with a bar in between my legs to keep the broken leg from moving. I looked like an 'A' from the waist down.

My mom's cousin was/is a handy guy so he built me a wooden 'lap' desk that straddled my body and had an angled surface. So I could put a book there and read, or draw, or whatever. My left arm was in a cast too, so just about everything had to be done with my right hand.

Anyway, it's long gone but I wish I still had it. It was made from plywood, but he sanded, stained and poly'd it like a nice piece of furniture. That was my work area for a while!

48 My hobby room was my garage/shop. A couple things I made was a can smasher powered by a B/S washing machine engine utilizing part of a pump jack for gear reduction, the other one is a Maytag washer engine powering a White Mountain ice cream freezer to make homemade ice cream.

49 I have a desk which actually has enough enough leg room (a rarity), a leather insert and is sturdy enough to withstand typing with a 40 pound manual typewriter without vibrating. Big enough for a small easel or pad with all the drawing supplies.

Sketching: anywhere really.
Drawing/coloring: desk.
Gunsmithing/cleaning: workbench in garage. (gets damn cold in winter)
Fly tying: old dining room table in a 'sorta' separate room.
Reloading: same place as the fly tying but on a small table. The press is on it's own stand.
Whittling: Small table in my office or in my easy chair if the piece is handheld.
Reading: EVERYWHERE

52 I dream of having a garage to keep my car out of the weather, to be able to wax and detail it without worrying about hot sun, rain, or snow. Plus washing it in my driveway. And I would like to be able to change oil myself again -- which means ramps and wheel chocks, a large enough pan to drain the oil into, and some kind of vessel to hold the drained oil so I can bring it to recycling.

With my Mercedes, it was possible to draw the oil up through the dipstick tube with a Topsider, a vacuum-operated pump. When I was done the 9-qt. can could be sealed up and brought to Autozone for recycling. But the MBs were designed for that. I doubt the Buick is.

53 JQ, the china hutch is a great idea!! Wow, I should have kept my mom's--wasn't really an heirloom but it sure was big. But I didn't care about china or crystal either, so let it go. Darn.

55 Ach, Werner is late to the game. The hobbies picture here mildly triggers my envy, seeing the wealth of talent and knowledge that are the distinctive qualities of the Horde. Werner is fortunate to be among you, and much admires your creative abilities.

I had a comment ready for the Pets thread, but Werner got too distracted playing Wordle. I am Deutsch, so coming up with a word five letters in length presents an intriguing challenge, and I am transfixed in the effort. My comment for the delightful animals thread was a consequnce of a past event. I had arised one morning, and discovered that Klaus Kinski was not in his kennel, nor had he touched his Purina or his water bowl. I grew alarmed. Had the nominal man creature wandered away from what passed for his home? Then came the ring of a telephone.

I answered. In the background, I could hear Klaus sobbing and shouting, Werner! Klaus has the scaries! Come free me! Then a harsh voice addressed me. Werner, we have your man-beast pet. Money must change hands to effect his release.

56 With my Mercedes, it was possible to draw the oil up through the dipstick tube with a Topsider, a vacuum-operated pump. When I was done the 9-qt. can could be sealed up and brought to Autozone for recycling. But the MBs were designed for that. I doubt the Buick is.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 14, 2024 06:36 PM (omVj0)

Scotty Kilmer on YT talks about that. He thinks that's the best way to replace motor oil. There should be a pump that works for every car. Of course, you'll still have to get under to replace the filter.

57 I have a short box 20' long x 6' wide trailer for storage and I still have stuff all over. One stall in the mare barn is dedicated to plumbing, welding and barn repair supplies.

58 It's silly, but I bought a multi-pack of tape measures at Hdepot a few years back.

Yep, all are now in The Shop and I swear hubby takes inventory. Has a fit if any are missing.

So, I bought another 2pack last year. Hubby caught me using one as I measured a garden area... "Where'd you get that?" like I'm a criminal LOL. Told him I bought it for myself because he's so possessive of HIS tapes.

The other one is in my car. Safe from the roving tape measure gatherer. For now.

My 24pack of pencils is safe because they're not sharpened yet.

59 I recently recieved my long awaited Monster Hunter International minatures game I ordered as part of a Kickstarter two years ago. Now I have a bunch of tiny minatures to paint. There are a ton of youtube videos but like most instructional videos, they're like, oh, this is so easy, and the presenter whips out a museum quality piece like it's nothing. The reality, I find, is...different.

60 I am a knitter and have piles in various rooms. I do have some of it in Swifts (which is a knitting bag by Tom Binh). I have yarn and fiber in trunks. I can't find my double points. I should think about putting some tools in my roll top desk. I don't need it for work any more.

The big problem is those "when I retire" projects. I am thinking seriously about downsizing the yarn. Just not going to do those projects and need to focus on what I do want.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at September 14, 2024 06:44 PM (MpVUb)

61 Mrs. Peel, I know how you feel! I never could understand those who complained about two-year-olds saying MINE MINE MINE because I feel exactly the same way.

I do have guilt about my drawers and sacks of yarn. I once put in a story a yarn store with the name S.A.B.L.E. (Stash Accumulated Beyond Life Expectancy)

62 Desk space was a problem until I made my own. It is 6ft long x 36 inches wide. Looks more like a library table.

63 JQ that's funny! Maybe not to you though! I can picture your house like Walmart; have to show your receipt when you're working!

A small pencil engraver to engrave your stuff won't prevent it from walking away, but could help with identifying the proper owner!

Posted by: haffhowershower at September 14, 2024 06:47 PM (NMT5x)

64 I mostly do crocheting and needlework- neither really requires much room for the actual execution, but the house is stuffed to the gills with yarn, fabric, thread, and more patterns/booklets than I will ever be able to get to.

I used to do scrapbooking, but I may be donating those supplies to Rebecca's old school - the teachers love to make scrapbooks for their classes.

I also used to sew, but haven't been able to do that in at least a decade. I miss that.

65 haffhowershower-- It wasn't funny at first, but now? it's become a game!

Hubby can't see well enough to read engraving on a pencil, but I'm thinking to buy a roll of pattern-printed duct tape to wrap them with. He sometimes wraps his with blue tape for a better grip.

66 The other end of the line fell silent. It gave Werner the chance to establish the terms of this curious interchange. Listen, I informed the pet-napper. I am not wealthy, but I do possess a set of skills. If you release not the nominally-human Kinski, I will track you down, I will find you, and I will film a documentary about you, which shall attain critical praise and raves upon its debut at Cannes.

The pet snatcher, puzzled, resorted to further threats. Listen, you old Kraut, said he. We are in possession of this thing that should not be, and five million dollars is the offer. Five million, I asked? Yes, they growled, or Klaus Kinski is going to get acquainted with a cattle prod.

I thought it over. Nein, I told the criminal, it must be more than that. The other end of the line stammered in confusion, so I clarified. You shall have to pay me considerably more to take Kinski off your hands. What, does Werner stutter? I shall be generous and put the price at fifteen million. Pull that dough together or you shall be stuck with the care and upkeep of Klaus. Later that day, Werner was 15 mill richer, and Kinski was back home. Ach.

68 I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to continue some activities, so I sold the skis and the truck, maintenance on it always was impractical for the space it lived in. Garage ceiling was too low for one. So with much regret it left.
Same story with the Road Runner, that was just impractical period. A ton of fun but I could see a bad end coming some night.

69 However big your space is, it's never enough. My combined shop space is about 2000 sq ft and it's jammed full.

I'm lucky as my shops are used for business in addition to my hobbies. I used to rent space for the business, when it was bigger and I had employees, but once I moved out of there i was able to justify buying more space at home with what I was saving on rent. You can just write it off, you know.

80 Oh, JTB, how we hear you...

I am giving up spinning- I live in TX, who wears wool?

I have pared down the yarn stash and now try to only buy per project.
Back in the day, the worst was the DFW Fiber Fest. I would attend with friends and we were like drunk sailors in port.
Though sometimes we were each other's accountability person- "I cannot buy any sock yarn. Do you hear me? NO sock yarn!"

Posted by: sal at September 14, 2024 07:32 PM (f+FmA)

81 The spinning stuff can be compact, especially if you use spindles. Most of my spinning wheels are castle style(flyer on top). I did get rid of some fleece that I just hadn't done anything with. I was in a better area before for fiber festivals and buying raw fleece. I have picked up a little cotton and a little exotic fiber to use on the charkha. I definitely have more yarn than fiber.

82 well, let's see ... Lego models are built on the dining room table. Kits waiting for me to find time are stored under my desks.
I have a 40 x 36 shop. The north side is split between motorcycles, gun safes, and a long desk for the CO2 laser, the 3D printer and the diode laser.
The southside of my shop has the woodworking equipment and tool chests. Oh, and the compressor.
Metal working is done in my machine shed down the hill ... it's small and old, so I have to back the tractor out to do any cutting or welding.
Too many hobbies and too little time. Right now, my main hobby is upgrading the CO2 laser and chiller, and upgrading the diode laser to triple the workspace. I finally finished upgrading the 3D printer, so ma5be I'll start printing something besides parts for the upgrades.

84 My HOA has "suggested" i clean the long-accumulated junk outta my basement by end of october. I really should so that i can focus on furbishing that portion which is my music studio. The big problem i have is that the studio is prone to minor flooding (.25-.5") during the rainy season (nov-mar) so while i can't stop it, i can elevate parts of the floor and ignore it.
