Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Ford’s EV Debacle Worsens with $1.9 Billion Additional Write-Downs, and its Never-Used EV Plant Now Mothballed until 2027![]() Ford Motor is canceling plans for a large electric sport-utility vehicle and expects to take $1.9 billion in related special charges and write-downs, as automakers continue adjusting their EV plans because of softer-than-expected demand. For the record, the “softer-than-expected demand” for EVs was not unexpected by me, or by anyone else who is vaguely familiar with the driving needs of most Americans. It’s an indictment of the bubble in which our ruling class lives that they are surprised by consumer rejection of EVs. It’s also an indictment of the blistering incompetence of Jim Farley and his ilk, who believe that politicians and bureaucrats can decree what consumers should want, rather than listening to Ford’s dealers, who are on the front lines talking to actual consumers. Perhaps more significant is that commencement of vehicle production at the massive new EV manufacturing facility that Ford has been building outside Memphis – which was initially supposed to start producing electric pickup trucks in 2025 – has been postponed again. It was only a few months ago that Ford announced that production was being delayed until 2026, not due to construction delays, but due to consumer rejection of Ford’s EV offerings. That production-start date has now been pushed back again – this time until 2027. “Ford says production of electric pickup truck at Blue Oval City delayed until 2027” [ABC Memphis 24 - 8/21/2024] Ford, which is losing millions on its current EVs, gave few details about the new products. But it said production of its next generation full-size electric pickup truck at Blue Oval City in West Tennessee will be delayed 18 months, until 2027.I have been writing about Ford’s “Blue Oval City” mess in various outlets, documenting not just Ford’s bad decisions, but also those of Tennessee politicians who threw a billion taxpayer dollars at this public-private sinkhole. This is from a piece of mine titled “Blue Oval Blues” at Tennessee Conservative News: In 2021, the gullible Republican-controlled legislature in Tennessee, along with the gullible Republican governor, threw about one billion taxpayer dollars from its Rainy Day Fund at Ford to manufacture a massive new plant outside of Memphis. Known as Blue Oval City, the total cost of the project was estimated at close to $6 billion. The state also helped out by condemning land and building roads. The first electric pickup trucks were supposed to roll off the line in 2025, but just a few months ago Ford announced that production was being pushed back until 2026. The delay is not related to construction issues. It’s because consumers have emphatically rejected Ford’s flagship EV, the F150I was right when I stated a few years ago that Ford would not be producing EVs in West Tennessee in 2025. I was right when I recently stated that Ford would not be producing EVs in West Tennessee in 2026. And I am telling you now with 100% certainty that Ford will not be producing EVs in West Tennessee in 2027. For that reason alone, I could run Ford much better than Jim Farley, and for a lot less money. Perhaps Blue Oval City can be sold, or repurposed by Ford for other manufacturing uses. But if not, it represents another multi-billion-dollar unrealized loss that will have to be recognized someday. There is no way forward for Ford to resolve its EV nightmare, and Blue Oval City is a sunk cost that will likely have to be written off at some point. Ford’s traditional business units cannot continue to cover for its EV losses forever, no matter how passionate Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley are about pleasing Klaus Schwab and Joe Biden. This latest news about Ford taking a $1.9 billion loss – on top of all its other multi-billion dollar EV losses - and postponing Blue Oval City until 2027, reflects nothing more than a continuous drip, drip, drip that is building into a flood of red ink that EVs are costing Ford. By the time Farley is finally dismissed, he may go down in memory as the “20 Billion Dollar Man” for how much he ultimately costs Ford and its shareholders in pursuit of the EV fairy tale. Millions, billions, what's the diff? There is no way forward for Ford to resolve its EV nightmare, and Blue Oval City is a sunk cost that will likely have to be written off at some point. You see a lot of the same behavior in the electric utility market where they have been pouring billions into renewables. It would be nice to have a free market economy but we don't have one. You've made 6-7 years of payments, and 3-5 years after that are looking at 20K battery investment. That's a nice used car right now, depending upon your needs. nd will offer a range of electrification options designed to speed customer adoption, including lower prices and longer ranges," the statement said.
When will the braintrust at the automakers finally figure out that its not range that consumers are rejecting - its recharge rate. People are lining up to buy the new Lexus GX550 and Land Cruisers. I was. There's a year long wait for it if you order today. It has a 19 gallon tank and gets only 17mpg. Thats not great (especially for an "overlander") range but nobody GAF because it only takes 2 minutes to completely restore that range. EV's will NEVER appeal to mass market consumers because it simply requires that you re-arrange your travel plans according to your VEHICLE'S requirements, not your own. My wife and I just picked up a new puppy two weeks ago around Charlottesville VA and rented a Ford Edge to drive the little guy up to Maine. It took 15 hours only because we had to stop all of the time to let little bladder guy do his business. I couldn't imagine doing that in an EV if I had to sit around and wait for it to charge every 200 miles or so. Posted by: Defenestratus at August 23, 2024 11:22 AM (oLya/) 83

That's a nice used car right now, depending upon your needs. They need to eliminate ICE vehicles before that becomes apparent to everyone. So the current EV customers can't easily go back to ICE vehicles.
- half of EV owners switch back to real cars. They will try it, and will try to shoehorn it in, but this scheme requires rebuilding most of the major cities on earth. That can't be done. So the real plan will be to rebuild a few of them and concentrate the entire population into them at ludicrous density, Oriental style. But unlike the Oriental model of urbanization, the populations aren't going to self-migrate. It worked - sort of - in the Orient because those new mega-cities did have genuine economic opportunity. It was a bum deal society-wise, but it did make economic sense and so people did it. The contrived version will also be devoid of economic opportunity. They can deliberately destroy opportunity outside of the mega-cities, but can't do so completely because those non-mega-city areas still need to exist and produce. I have a Lincoln Town Car that I love. I love the Panther platform and wish it had not been retired. But I understand how it happened. Common claim made by EVangelists but in reality doesn't pan out. Those EV's still have suspension, steering, HVAC, cooling and infotainment systems. The only real change is the the motor and drivetrain. Whereas on ICE vehicles, those components are serviceable by component (if your engine starts making a weird noise, you just replace the component that is causing the problem) whereas EV's - if the "drivetrain" is bad it necessitates a full replacement of that motor. The other side of the simplicity coin is what you describe: there is fairly little (outside of software) *to* go wrong, so anything that goes wrong is, almost by definition, big. You have a nice, long time from "new" to "something big goes wrong," but when the shoe drops, it drops from a great height. I strongly suspect that on a 10-15 year timeline, the costs of ownership and maintenance balance out or end up favoring traditional cars. The first 5-10 years, though, are pretty enticing. An adjustment that large is bound to impact Fed policy- and it did. Mission accomplished. The “cooling” of the jobs market based on the adjusted numbers just gave Powell and excuse to cut rates and pump the markets. It will be temporary, but will last the next few months. Jobs will continue to cool, and the inflationary policies of Democrats were just doubled-down on by their candidate. Higher corporate tax rates and the super charged spending Democrats are proposing will be the final
Death blow. People should choose wisely. If Democrats get in the last four years will look good compared to what’s ahead. Posted by: Marcus T at August 23, 2024 11:40 AM (FwedH) 151

Also willowed from the last thread re: AWALZ angrily jerking his potentially autistic son around:
Imagine how powerful it would be if mothers who had their children late in life or who used IVF or other unnatural means began to speak to women about the health risks their decisions brought to the children. Health issues that their children would carry with them for 80 years or so, all so the mom could waste her healthy years to pay taxes for a decade or so before having kids. That type of action could change quality of life of countless women and children. Posted by: Moron Robbie, Black Tik-Tok Influencer at August 23, 2024 11:42 AM (jzegu) 157

Farley did a very good guest appearance at a House GOP caucus event where he played the role of Newt Gingrich (who was present, and laughing very hard). Probably on UToob. In a way a small window on a country that seems long gone - politicos (not all of whom were useless, and who actually did accomplish some things and do what they said they'd do) laughing at hard-hitting sarcasm delivered right to their face. Not the cringey Soviet/North Korean vibe of today, humor-free, with few competent politicos with any political integrity.

They are pursuing the agenda of the BlackRock contingent, globalists and government. When powerful, rich interests tell you they are going to do something and then they do it it's probably worth acknowledging that they just did it. Spend some time reading the WEF website, listening to their speeches, reviewing their membership and you will see that all of these companies didn't just adopt things like DEI and EVs by coincidence. They all aren't working to rig elections and install globalists and trash nationalists by chance. Ehh, EVs are mechanically simpler and have lower maintenance requirements than hybrids. Yes, there all the other downsides - namely longevity of the power plant - that everyone already knows about, but if you're an urbanite who cycles out of his car every 5 years or so, an EV might be superior.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 23, 2024 11:28 AM (HnUIn) Lower maintenance requirements, except for the giant replacement battery costs, which are all at once. Guaranteed I have not spent $20 K in maintenance on my 30 year old full size truck in the last 10 years that I have owned it, or on the now paid late-model highlander, or on the prior Subaru Forrester, or on the prior Toyota pickup, etc. Most people don't think about maintenance requirements in terms of changing oil, brakes, spark plugs, etc. They just think dollars. You know, to deal with all of the eye pokes. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at August 23, 2024 11:52 AM (v6JzV) Nope. There were never any "eye pokes". Perceived, but not real. Definitely a male thing. Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at August 23, 2024 *** I outgrew the Stooges when I was about twelve. That said, seeing some of their short films on MeTV on Saturday evenings as a warmup for Svengoolie is entertaining. You get a glimpse of the clothes and cars of the various decades. And I admire their comic timing. The two shorts where they satirized the Nazis, with Moe as a Hitler-like dictator, were a lot of fun, though. One of those films predated our entry into the war. The Rob Schneider piece referenced above by JackStraw is a pretty good summary. Hope RFK uses some of this approach. It's a slap in the face that millions of people need, but would engender only backlash if delivered by an R or a conservative.

small on the stage.
I mean that both literally and metaphorically. Posted by: Shenanigans If you saw any of the RNC convention, the stage, lighting, music, speakers was vastly different than the DNC. The RNC was a major production, like a Broadway show. The DNC looked like a basketball arena.Their speakers dull and boring(not that I actually listened to any of them). Even how they dressed especially Harris. No personality. No effort at all in presentation. They are just taking it all for granted. Cut Sowell some slack. He’s from the older generation when elections we’re competing campaigns. Unlike what we have now, a campaign vs the largest fraud campaign in history.
Posted by: Dr. Claw ====== Any expert out of their field is liable to say stupid shit. Sowell's is economics--not politics nor political science. The two are sort of related as a lot of politics involves taking money and redistributing it but it is extremely rare for a government to be run by economic principles in the long run. Politics will always get in the way. Posted by: whig at August 23, 2024 12:05 PM (kW+z9) 251

China and BlackRock, which together run the White House, are building EVs in Mexico to sneak them in as Mexican cars under the USMCA Trade Agreement.
China wants the American car market and Joey Bribes is trying to give it to them. Fentanyl Joe & Co. plan to outlaw any other vehicles. Only President Trump is standing up to them. As usual. Posted by: The Gipper Lives at August 23, 2024 12:38 PM (cCgyq) 259
Corvair fan belts had an installed twist that was okay at idle speeds--allowed the belt to recover from the twist, but at higher engine rpms couldn't cope, thus it would twist itself to strands.

Every other SUV are rounded. I like driving a man's SUV not a rounded vg. 2nd: I think these asshats specifically target red states for the tax dollars they get in subsidies and then don't go forward with the projects. It drains the resources of the red states for the corporations and unions. I had thought Tennessee was smarter than that. Posted by: Morgan at August 23, 2024 12:40 PM (6BSp4) 261
If Ford is taking multibillion-dollar losses on their EVs -- which are, themselves, subsidized heavily by taxpayers -- then I would hate to see how much we're ACTUALLY losing every year due to this unnecessary and futile policy of Saving The Planet.

Although it looked cool in the engine bay, I never understood why they didn't just go with a rope-type belt rather than the eve shape. If you're going to try to bend a belt's action 90°, why complicate the matter with forcing a v-shape to likewise twist? Just do it with a belt whose cross-section is a circle. Shame that the Corsair had so many detractors. Cool concept and design. Posted by: red speck at August 23, 2024 01:10 PM (0Id0S) 265
