Scientists pinpoint dino-killing asteroid’s origin: past Jupiter
AFP; August 16, 2024 An intense debate surrounding the cosmic rock that killed the dinosaurs has stirred scientists for decades, but a new study has revealed some important — and far-out — data about the impactor’s origin story. Researchers, whose findings were published Thursday in the journal Science, used an innovative technique to demonstrate that the apocalyptic culprit which slammed into the Earth’s surface 66 million years ago, causing the most recent mass extinction, had formed beyond Jupiter’s orbit. They also refute the idea that it was a comet. The new insights into the apparent asteroid that cratered into Chicxulub, in what is present-day Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, could improve the understanding of celestial objects that have struck our planet. “Now we can, with all this knowledge... say that this asteroid initially formed beyond Jupiter,” Mario Fischer-Godde, lead author of the study and a geochemist at the University of Cologne, told AFP. The conclusions are particularly notable, given how rarely this type of asteroid collides with Earth. https://tinyurl.com/27hpucst Posted by: andycanuck (i0CiB) at August 16, 2024 08:00 PM (i0CiB) 34

Stone Henge never really grabbed my attention.
I like the stonework examples in Peru, it is exceptionally finely made, huge stones, up to 12 sides, precision fit. Cusco and other places have these really beautiful walls. The interlocking feature seems to make them more earthquake resistant. But I can't figure out why they went to all that trouble with every block unique shaped, it had to be a pain. But they did it anyway, showing off? I don't know. They are before the Inca, who did utilize the sites and build on top of the older structures. But what's weird, in the new world we see the opposite where the more finely crafted architecture is lower down, and more primitive stuff built on top. Macchu Pichu was always on my bucket list since I was a little kid. Posted by: Signals Crossed at August 16, 2024 08:03 PM (11zMP) 47

North America had a good chunk of it under a mile of Ice until about 11,000 years ago. The southern terminus in Iowa is around Des Moines, there is still a glacial moraine visible, called a "lobe".
I expect the weather for growing anything or critters or anything was pretty crappy much farther south than Des Moines but I don't know. So no evidence of any habitation would remain in the northern parts of what are now the USA, not older than 11k years anyhow, and .... mile thick glaciers. Ice ages Suck. But you need to have your lawnmower and generator confiscated, and eat bugs if "they" get their way? I mean, that seems to be the concern with the tin-foil crowd. I wrote the following for an email list. It's mid conversation. I think I probably share too much.
Seriously, I did learn one lesson. This was definitely one of those things that costs a great deal of money. I take back what I said before. I now have a better understanding of how getting double stuffed falls in the realm of very expensive exams. It's not surgery but it's certainly the most invasive thing I've had done. Otherwise the most significant medical experiences I've had before this were the two kidney stones back in '10 or '11 and my tonsillectomy from when I was 12. Also, you can totally feel the anesthesia kicking in. It's like a kind of fuzz that begins in the back of your brain. I just closed my eyes and rolled with it. I've slept terribly the last couple of nights, I wasn't going to fight the opportunity for some shut-eye. I won't get the results of anything until the follow up...whenever I get back. I have at least a tentative diagnosis to one problem I've had. Ulcerative pancolitis. (Autocucumber tried changing that to pangolins.). Which according to the interwebs is basically ulcerative colitis but...worse. I suspected something along those lines./1 Posted by: Robert at August 16, 2024 08:18 PM (1Yy3c) 91
Unless I get back and the doctor says, "Did I say that? Sorry, I meant cancer. My bad."
Anyway, fun times. Not bad at all. It was mostly lots of waiting. Everything felt quite dignified. No one made fun of my wrinkly behind. (And if they did, well...if a trees falls in the forest, amirite?) once the drugs kicked in I embraced sweet, sweet oblivion. I'm not even sore. I was groggy as hell afterwards but I steadily improved and perked right up after I ate. And yes I *did* get that spicy chicken sammich from Chik-Fil-A. So freakin' delicious. With waffle fries. And a strawberry shake. Was that a good idea? Well, they said to avoid spicy food for the day but...ah, fuck 'em. Which brings us to the lesson of our tale...fried chicken is good and proof that the good lawd above wants us to be happy. And also getting it in the ass while unconscious isn't really so bad. /2 Fini Posted by: Robert at August 16, 2024 08:18 PM (1Yy3c) 92

Stonehenge is cool to see, once. Just to say you saw it. There is a village in that area that has a stone circle surrounding it. Can't remember the name of the village but it was more interesting than Stonehenge. Also, in the middle of Lake District NP in the NE of England, there is a large stone circle, surrounded by some of the prettiest scenery in Britain.

Organized crime outfits are good at bribing airline employees for flight manifests (lists of passengers). They then Google each name, create a list of apparent high-value targets, and arrive early to look for the right names on limo driver signs. They pay or threaten the actual limo drivers, who leave and are replaced. This is why I use pseudonyms for any car service pickups around the world. By using a made-up name for your car reservation, if you see a placard with your real name on it, you know it’s a set-up. If you become successful—or simply appear successful on the Internet—and travel a lot overseas, this is not paranoia. @98 There is a village in that area that has a stone circle surrounding it.
Stones and monuments are all through the "modern" medieval village, and a lot of them got sold, hauled away, buried on purpose or re-used, until an amateur antiquarian started buying it up and noising it about. And the thing about him was, he was heir to a pretty good fortune that arose when his mother got a good deal when a ship carrying oranges got stuck in port and they started to go bad. The family developed the mass production, branding and distribution of marmalade. Right in the same neighborhood there's a massive iron age tor that you cruise right past on the motorway, totes unrelated, if you're on the way to see the pretty horsies on the cliffside. And most of those things are older than Stonehenge. Busy area, a while back. The largest Miyaki Event was in 774 AD. They think now it was a YUGE solar flare/geomagnetic storm. There as some other isotope spikes then that are compatible with a gamma ray burst. However, there is little in the historical record of YUGE Aurorae at the time. There are some references that can be interpreted as such, though. If it was a solar event, the 774 AD would've made Carrington look like nothing. We did not have wires stretched across the planet then, nor radios and other electronic gizmos to be damaged. huh, for the only colonoscopy I've had so far, I was "awake", (for certain values of awake, lol) and buzzed as f on something that had me very cheerful and chatty ... they had the screen positioned so I could watch the whole thing ... doc was doing color commentary as required; got to see them snip a polyp or two for the pathologists & everything ! (they were all benign, yay) ... all was good, a few weeks later, got my ostomy reversal (YAY!) ... prep was the full gallon of polyethylene glycol solution, but honestly, I've had the runs worse a time or two; (it did the job super sweet, the long blood-red tunnel was immaculate); and I was shall we say, highly motivated. I *heart* my hospital! they literally saved my life a few years ago. (and contrary to all mythology, the food was excellent!) (unlimited popsicles? italian ice? avocado toast? black coffee counts as "clear liquid? what's not to love?) and that's not even counting the full solid entrees, lol, I actually tried to extend my stay by a day so I could see what they did for Turkey Day, but no go. The squirrel panel jury is split, gross incompetence vs fed participation Very few people had to be "in on it". The natural inclination of workers, especially govt workers living for that pension, is to do what boss says, keep quiet, and if something bad happens, make sure YOU don't catch the blame for it. You have put up with crap for 10-15 years, you have observed what happens to people that go against the management, and you probably won't change anything if you do except ruin YOUR life. Media in full bs mode.
The economy is doing great. No recession on the horizon. Inflation crushed. Unemployment down. It's all cotton candy and skittles shitting unicorns. Posted by: Erebus- ex-killer whale at August 16, 2024 09:52 PM (elaR+) 253
"1923", the sequel to "Yellowstone", has been filming here on Galveston Island.
I did not go and seek any autographs. But the "extras" dressing trailers, dining trailers and other rigs have been parked in the County facility parking lot, across the street from the back of my house. And no, it does not appear that the movie bid'ness is in the least bit glamorous. And for the film crews? Lighting, staging, sound, cameras? GEEZ. Bustin' hump in 102f Texas Humidity. Pass! How do they even sell Irish whiskey? I think it's a niche thing. Boston, Chicago, NY and the ol' Emerald Isle. Nobody else can gut down that swill. It's enough people to keep the stills in business, I guess.

I haven't tried many but I found like Tullamore Dew quite a bit. I generally prefer Woodford for all-around whatever, but something about the TD flavor suits my taste bud genetics.

Any thoughts on the shingles vaccine
My uncle got the vax and then got a bad case of shingles a couple months ago. He actually passed away a couple days ago. Not sure if related but last I saw him a month or so ago it really had him weakened. Posted by: Rusty at August 16, 2024 10:31 PM (nrIMb) 258
I haven't had any shots since I was sixteen, and that was for tetanus, and it was 25 years ago.
That's probably not good. I probably should've gotten some shots since then. But I haven't, and it hasn't killed me. I have to wonder if these injections are overrated. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at August 16, 2024 11:56 PM (0FoWg) 259
As Tartaglione tells it, Epstein returned to their shared cell after a meeting with the federal prosecutors. He told his cellmate that the prosecutors were fishing for a plea deal with him if he would provide damaging information about Trump that would support his impeachment. It didn’t matter whether it was true or not.
