Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist EditionIn late 2023, the capital city of Buenos Aires — home to the most desirable real estate in the country — estimated that one in seven homes was vacant. The Argentine Real Estate Chamber said at the end of 2023 that the supply of rental properties in Buenos Aires fell by 95 percent in the three years since the Rental Law was passed. Sadly, the supply of housing in many American cities and states follows this pattern. NYC has horrendous rent control laws that have depressed the supply of housing for generations. And California, with its combination of insane rent control in many cities, coupled with equally maniacal construction restrictions, has housing costs that are out of control. Milei overturned the Rental Law with an executive decree in December, one of many sweeping changes he implemented in a program he described as “shock therapy” for Argentina’s moribund socialist economy. Newsweek on Tuesday described the result as a “surge in housing supply” that directly caused a “drop in rental prices.” “Since Millei’s repeal of rent control laws took effect on December 29, the supply of rental housing in Buenos Aires has jumped by 195.23%, according to the Statistical Observatory of the Real Estate Market of the Real Estate College,” Newsweek said.In less than one year, there has been a tectonic shift in a major market in Argentina, all because one man saw the evil of central planning and the societal destruction that it wreaks. But the lesson will be lost on America. The Harris/Obama junta is busily formulating plans for more central control of housing, and there seem to be plans in the works for price controls on other goods. Unless these budding dictators are also capable of changing human nature, they are doomed to fail. All they will get -- and it's probably the unstated goal -- is a decrease in supply and quality of every controlled good. Thousands of years of human history backs up that consequence. But THIS TIME will be different, because they have the right people in charge! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

NYC and California survive because there historically has been a wealthy class of people who subsidize the rent-seeking freeloaders in controlled housing. Rent-controlled units only mean that the landlord has to over-charge "market" tenants to make up for the shortfall.
So long as there are tenants willing to absorb that over-charge, then the corrupt system will sustain itself. Rentals are booming in NYC, so at least for now the system is not in danger of imploding. But give the commies a few more decades and we'll see where we are. Posted by: Doctor Elric Blade, Esq. at August 15, 2024 11:06 AM (iFTx/) 23

"Affordable Housing"
This is one of my favorite illustrations. Now I will be the first to acknowledge I really don't want the value of my home to fluctuate in the wrong direction. Many decades of government involvment, with various carrot and stick arrangements with large banks, has resulted in ..... Well I don't know what you call it. Let's just say that nobody really knows who owns what, and officially at least, very many large institutions are "too big to fail". As a society, we have to get it in our heads, that the people who have destroyed the system are not in any way shape or form to be allowed to try and Fix What It Is That They Broke. If you are appalled by their breathtaking inexperience and ineptitude, and you should be, you will REALLY REALLY not like their "solutions". Don't be fooled. It's just a huge sea change in the electorate. Decades ago, even rank and file Democrats understood central planning and socialism dont work. But when you have generations of renters that cant seem to get near the American dream, they'll give socialism a try.
Maybe this "birds of a feather" with government control, but I'd like to see some laws forbidding private equity from getting into single family housing. I think this has had far more to do with housing becoming unaffordable for the middle class. Blackstone has basically turned AZ into some serfdom with buying up houses to rent at sky high prices. https://tinyurl.com/252ts534 Posted by: Archimedes EXCLUSIVE and BREAKING: During a Donald Trump visit to North Carolina yesterday, a woman Secret Service special agent abandoned her post to breastfeed with no permission/warning to the event site agent, according to three sources in the Secret Service community. Shortly before Trump's motorcade arrival -- I'm told five minutes beforehand -- the site agent was getting ready for the arrival. (The site agent is the person in charge of the entire event's security.) The site agent went to do one final sweep of the walking route and found the agent breast-feeding her child in a room that is supposed to be set aside for important Secret Service official work, i.e. a potential emergency related to the president. A working agent on duty cannot bring a child to a protective assignment. The woman was out of the Atlanta Field Office. The woman agent was in the room with two other family members.

Willowed:
"Red and yellow, black and white" is from "Jesus Loves The Little Children," a latter-day rewrite of the Civil War anthem Tramp, Tramp, Tramp. It was re-lyriced earlier by the Military Order of The Carabao as "Damn The Insurrectos," containing the once-frequently quoted line "Underneath the starry flag, civilize 'em with a Krag." Jesus and his many-colored children came a generation later, a real Rodeheaver of a hymn." Thank you for that. Interesting. I did not know any of that. It was just a song we learned in Sunday school (at a Salvation Army church), and we would perform it with the brass band on Sunday mornings, occasionally. It’s also crucial for people, even if they mean well, to acknowledge some concepts when dealing with humans, they might work in a microcosm, but they won’t work at scale.
The Soviet Union, and surely several other nutbar regimes, demonstrated that price controls and Utopia is not possible even at the point or a gun. “Hoarding” food was basically a death penalty offense. There is a good reason that growth can't go unchecked in much of California, and that reason is water. There's only one in my tri-state area, and it's made up of SA clergy, not reformed street alkies as they once were. Playing brass hasn't been a sure job ticket since Chicago's second album.

EXCLUSIVE and BREAKING: During a Donald Trump visit to North Carolina yesterday, a woman Secret Service special agent abandoned her post to breastfeed with no permission/warning to the event site agent, according to three sources in the Secret Service community.
The agent and her family members bypassed the Uniformed Division checkpoint and were escorted by an unpinned event staff into the room to breastfeed, the sources said. Unpinned means they have not been cleared by the Secret Service to be there. Posted by: MAGA_Ken at August 15, 2024 11:43 AM (2fIO4) 167

193 I've liked the recent Dune remake, the problem it has is that it is largely forgettable and will be long forgotten.
The 1984 original will still be talked about many years hence. Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 15, 2024 11:48 AM (XV/Pl) ------------- The Spacing Guild meeting the Emperor in the 1984 version is still one of my favorite scenes in a sci-fi movie, even though it was basically an exposition dump. The Navigator leaving a trail of slime in the Emperor's throne room is a hoot but also tells you all you need to know about the power structure of the Dune universe. That works to a point, but Megan's (and my) point is that it's time to move on. But what do I know?
Posted by: Archimedes More to the point, what does Megan know. She gets her authority from being on TV. That is it. People watch TV more to be confirmed in opinions rather than actually obtaining news. So, Megan sells her own opinion and those invisible people that she has in her social circle. A lot of those invisible people are former Bushies and former Faux news colleagues/contacts/etc. There are some real political campaign analysts out there but Megan ain't one of them and never has been any more than Brit Hume, Baier, Madcow, etc are. The whole lawsuit thing in 2020 has made even alternative media very cautious about electoral fraud claims and made political analysis worse because it is the specter over the election that few talk about but over 60 percent of the public have already digested and are willing to believe it is possible. The Uniparty fears what happens when election fraud essentially de-legitimates the entire political regime--Dem and GOP and their subsequent actions. That is why they acted in concert to shut down media coverage of such in 2020. Posted by: whig at August 15, 2024 11:57 AM (kW+z9) 233

I know people hate Game of Thrones, but really, the first several seasons were fantastic, as were the first several seasons of Walking Dead. But then you have something like The Boys, and those douchebags ruined it, almost from the start, by boxing themselves into a narrative corner with their changes. - I don't think Dune does. I think the people trying to make the movies also try to hard because it's an interesting story with opportunities for weirdness. Gotta be unique and extreme or whatever. I haven't seen the recent ones but a light touch and even a lean towards "people are fairly normal and relatable, just odd in a futuristic way" would probably work and be shocking in 2024. Instead, the two main film adaptations try to tell too much of the backstory. One of the cool things about the story -- and something not in any other sci-fi -- is the worms, but they are barely even seen in the latest movies. Wtf?? Instead we get endless scenes of characters wandering in deserts, weird ladies behind veils, and lots of unexplained mumbo-jumbo. Yup. Mock her. Paint her as a phony, a liar, Fake New Kamala.People vote on emotions.
Not a logical analysis of the issues. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice = Repeated research actually shows they vote on both (leaving out partisans). People that are not ideological voters have outcome preferences that are pretty easy to figure out. War is bad, peace is good, unemployment bad, employment good, inflation bad, stable prices good, and that sort of thing. What they lack is any cause and effect relationship understanding (ideologues have this even if erroneous) about what policies get them to their desired outcomes. They can learn what policies they don't like (Heard about the Green Nude Eel much lately) or transing children, etc. And framing an opponent personally for example as 'fake' then carries forward to analyzing any of that person's proposed policies and hiding their real opinions. The Dems try to define Trump as fascist for the same reason--people don't know what it is but has to be bad because Not Sees. Framing the opponent (or even party) is to soften them up for FUD approaches. Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt as to their proposed policies. Works better on unknowns. I don't understand these people that want to control everything everyone else is doing. It's insane. You don't even follow your own rules. Why enforce them on others? It's evil.
Everything wrong in the West right now is because the rich and powerful (who are usually not the people who worked to create that wealth - the Wal-Mart and News Corp. heirs, the widow Jobs, etc, etc) had a mass mental breakdown 100 years ago that they aren't legally allowed to traipse around like feudal lords and act out "The Aristocrats" (the usually-dirty joke) anytime they like. That breakdown is still the key feature of their psyche, even ones that were born well after it started. They baited the hook with Marxism because it's irresistible to young skulls full of mush, but the actual intent is to kill a few billion to decrease the odds of resistance and then enact feudalism. Okay, he's not what I would call an ally.
But yesterday when I heard somebody say that Andrew McCarthy was saying Trump *should* go to jail, that sounded off from what I've heard from McCarthy criticizing "Lawfare". This this morning I read on PJ Media --- McCarthy points out that Sept. 18 is “two days after early voting in the 2024 election begins in Pennsylvania.” Merchan’s goal, according to McCarthy, is “to enable Vice President Harris and the media-Democratic complex to label Trump ‘a convicted felon sentenced to prison’ just weeks before Election Day, at a time when Americans will already have started voting in many states, not least the potentially decisive Pennsylvania battleground.” --- If he's saying Merchan is scheduling Trump's conviction for maximum effect in the election for Harris, from all that I have heard McCarthy say, it doesn't sound to me like he's *for* that. A judge SHOULD NOT be participating in a campaign, when he has the opponent before him. I don't agree with McCarthy on everything, but I think he would agree with that as jurisprudence. (cont) Posted by: Axeman at August 15, 2024 12:07 PM (krQz2) 264
From my last post:
There's also this quote from McCarthy --- “The New York prosecution of Trump,” McCarthy points out, “was politics, not justice. That’s why we call it ‘lawfare.’ The prosecutors and judge are not concerned about whether convictions ultimately get thrown out on appeal.&rdquo --- So I can't even think that McCarthy is for Trump being convicted on something he himself calls "lawfare" and "politics". So, I know he probably won't be a faithful ally, but can people stop lying about the guy? Maoists do this kind of thing. Posted by: Axeman at August 15, 2024 12:09 PM (krQz2) 265

Posted by: illiniwek ======= Speaking true rhetoric offends the political classes that subsist on lies. Hillary was and is Nasty. Jeb was and is Low Energy. Marco is still "Little" and Kamala is transparently Fake. The best political rhetoric as Aristotle taught us long ago is that pithy description that has truth at the heart of it. Trump has been branded himself, Fight Fight Fight whether he did it consciously or not at that moment. That repels the political class because it indicts their cowardly avoidance of essential truths in society. For example, the ridiculous one drop rule instituted by the PTB on race and the ridiculous results stemming from that societal lie--Kamala is and was no part of the black community growing up or in politics and not much identity as an American. Talcum X is not black and so on. Posted by: whig at August 15, 2024 12:13 PM (kW+z9) 267

Posted by: Axeman Some of this is conflation of McCarthy's previous idiocies on the Florida document case and the Jan 6 cases. Essentially, McCarthy has destroyed his own credibility and branding in order to stay in the perceived Mainstream. One day he brought in $100 bills from the 40s and 50s stamped "Silver Certificate" on the bill. He told me this is what they used in the black market. There were 1000s of these. The trading was insane. One $100 could get you a six pack of coke, or toilet paper, etc. He had about $2000 on him and wanted to know if they were still usable due to the age.
