Gun Thread: Second August Edition!

081124 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the second Sunday in August?

Tropical Storm Debby was in the news this week and at one point was forecast to track exactly over WeaselAcres on the way north. It was greatly diminished by the time it arrived in Central Virginia and as near as I can tell, dropped about 3 or 4 inches of rain on the organic tree farm so I hope the trees are happy now. The wind was negligible, so I'm not expecting too big of a mess when I get down there soon. Here at the Casa of Weasel we had about 2.5 inches or so of rain. Thankfully no flooding and not much wind so all is bueno. How about where you are?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Lately we've been talking a lot about fundamentals and how focusing on them will make you a better shooter. We have even gone as far as separating fundamentals into four broad categories; stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger mechanics and how together these elements build practical marksmanship skills. With me so far?

There is actually a fifth fundamental that is so fundamentally fundamental it is really a pre-fundamental or perhaps even a proto-fundamental, and that is Not Killing Yourself or Your Range Buddy While Practicing Fundamentals, or NKYOYRBWPF. That's a lot to wrangle, so how about we simply call it GUN SAFETY. Frankly, I know of no single better way to drive off all of the range babes than by inadvertently shooting yourself or an innocent bystander at the range.

Q: Weasel, wouldn't it be helpful if there were safety rules to adhere to?
A: Yes. Yes it would.

- Treat all guns as if they are loaded
- Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
- Keep your &%#$*^ finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
- Know your target and what is behind it
- know how to operate the gun

And I will add another:
- Don't be stupid.

There are lots of variations of these rules but I think you get the idea. Shooting sports are fun and challenging but can quickly turn deadly if you aren't paying attention.

Safety is a fundamental, and you need to be thinking about it at all times. It's fun and exciting to be at the range shooting especially if you're new to the sport, but it's important to remember you have a loaded gun in your hands and it's easy to become distracted by all that's going on. Conversely, with experienced shooters familiarity can breed overconfidence and carelessness and be every bit as deadly as inexperience. Whatever the case, never, ever, ever point a gun at anything or anyone you do not intend to shoot, and never shoot anything you do not plan to kill. Especially do not point a gun at me, thank you very much. It only takes a split second to go from a day of funsies at the range to absolute disaster, with one or more lives changed forever.

Our pal hickok45 has the following short video on the topic.

Any questions? Anything to add?

Guns of Weasel
Or more accurately, Holsters of Guns of Weasel.

Last week we looked at a pistol I recently purchased, the Kimber Micro 9. I have yet to shoot it but it seems like a pretty neat-o little gun. I mentioned that I'd been thinking about a compact 9mm as a step up in caliber from the Sig P238 (.380 ACP) I carry frequently in a front pocket or my computer bag. It's been a great option when commuting, at the office, and for quick midnight trips to the store for Slim-Jims, but I thought I might want something with a little more oompfh.

I carry the P235 in a DeSantis Nemesis holster which also happens to fit the Kimber. I like the fact when dropped into a front pocket it's nearly impossible to see, so I ordered another one.

081124 sig nemesis scaled.jpg

081124 kimber nemesis scaled.jpg

081124 both scaled.jpg

As you can see, the Kimber is but a wee tad larger than the Sig making pocket carry problematic in anything other than the baggiest cargo shorts, so the front pocket carry option for the Kimber is just OK and perhaps less than ideal for fast deployment. I have been a big fan of Garrett Holsters for many years, particularly their Silent Thunder line of OWB leather lined kydex holsters, having several for other handguns I own. I took a peek at their website and what do you know, they make an IWB Silent Thunder now too! I have never owned or used an IWB holster, so what the heck? The IWB is just the ticket to go under an untucked shirt.

081124 garrett IWB silent thunder scaled.jpg

So what do all y'all think? IWB, OWB, or either depending on the circumstances for carry? All things being equal do you have a preference?

Ax Weasel
Although I am still waaaaay behind on my correspondence, I saw this question in the 'ol mailbox from our pal Ray regarding my recent purchase.

Just curious why you went with the Kimber instead of the Sig P938. (Since you have the P238 and seem happy with it) I have had the 938 for several years and am very happy with it.

Well, "Ray" if that is your real name, I wish I could say I performed a big contemplative study on the merits of both firearms, and only after careful study weighing the pro and cons of each, made the decision to go with the Kimber over the Sig.

Truth is, my process was about like this:
a) Well that's a nice looking 9mm pistol from Kimber
2) *clicks BUY*

Honestly, that was about it. No study. No deliberation. 100% impulsive. Probably not the best example to follow! Thank you for the email!

How about all y'all? What is your process for choosing one gun over another?

Cigar of the Week

081124 Cohiba Black stock photo scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the Cohiba Black Robusto

The Cohiba Black Robusto

Every so often you just have to be indulgent and treat yourself. I have favorite cigars, and "go to" cigars, even "emergency" cigars, but when it's time to break out the good stuff (be it whiskey, women... errr... Mrs D, and cigars) I always turn to Cohiba. With the admonition of Mrs D still ringing in my ears to stay outside, I pulled out a Cohiba Black series Robusto and headed for the patio. I matched it to some 15 year Redbrast, and proceeded to enjoy one of the finer blue sky days here in the Pacific NW.

The Cohiba Black is drafted from a jet-black Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper as well as Dominican and Mexican tobaccos that have been aged at least three years. It has medium-bodied notes of cocoa, espresso beans, and, surprisingly, hickory that give it a awesome flavor from start to finish. It brings a leathery texture to the touch, and the finish lingers, a bit sweet and with none of the after cigar taste that so many leave with you. This will easily be one of the top three cigars I have this year. The down side is, it is $$$. Expect to pay in the $15-17 range for one of these. But, for those once or twice a year moments, it is worth every penny.

Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you very much! I think I need to addd these to my next order. Appreciate it!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

We don't shoot 22LR much but firing from a rifle, even a little teeny one like the HSR it doesn't make much noise. It was cool to shoot.

After a few months, flip it around so you don't build an outline of a gun in a pocket holster in your pocket.

38 Good evening all!!

No range report, but I did do something firearm related.
I purchased a new handgun, specifically the Sig Sauer 1911XR with a red dot.
I found they changed the whole process of getting a handgun in NYC.
It used to be you sent in a Purchase Authorization form via mail. The info needed on the form was of course your name address yada yada yada, your handgun license # and the make, model and barrel length of that particular handgun.
They would then send you back another PA form that had the information you provided and carbon copies that you bought to the FFL you are buying the gun from. You would do the 4473 and the FFL would fill out info on the PA form and you would get the handgun. You then had 3 days after taking possession to bring the handgun to 1 Police Plaza for "inspection" and they would add the serial # of the firearm onto you hand gun license.
That was the old way. Now you take a PA form that just has your personal information to the FFL. Submit a 4473 and purchase the firearm. The FFL will put your NIC# on the PA form.

41 I'll keep the story short. Went to the show to look for shotguns recommended by Ed L and Duncanthrax. Found some, liked the fit but wasn't sure it was a good deal.

Spotted a Springfield Armory SA-35 at a lower price than I ever recalled seeing and made a total impulse decision to buy it.

Jesse wanted one of those so badly when they first came out, but for months they were unobtainable.

I field stripped and lubed it today to prep for its maiden voyage, maybe next weekend? Easier than a 1911... Snap cap testing was successful so I didn't screw it up too badly.

Wow, it is nice. Can't wait to shoot it!

47 Part 2 of 2

You then have to take minimum of 2 photo's of the gun with one of them clearly showing the serial #, a photo of the PA form, a photo of the bill of sale and a photo of the case the gun comes in.
I leave the firearm with the FFL and EMAIL the NYPD the photo's and wait for them to hopefully say OK to buy and they mail me a new license and the PA pink slip that I bring back to the FFL and take possession of my new firearm. No trip to 1PP anymore.

NYC is taking steps in the right direction it appears.

60 Good evening fellow enthusiasts. I have a short range report.
We were a very small group today, Just me, Ed L and Hrothgar.
I only brought my old G48 and my new lily lilac G48 with the holosun green dot. Goal was to continue to use both to see any difference in handling basically. Grip felt terrific and arm steady with both firearms but surprisingly I shot better with the iron sight than the holosun. I am so happy I found the right psitol for my small hand. It is amazing how comfortable it feels.
Did have a few jams which Ed thinks is due to dirty mags so need to clean those up.
If I do decide to carry, I feel confident the G48 will work.

69 Gun-related; bear with me:
Last Wednesday on our morning walk my dog was attacked by a pit bull whose owner had let it off leash because he didn't think anyone else was on the trail. Damned thing was on my pup in a heartbeat. Its owner finally got it to release my dog by physically wrestling it away on the ground. I was armed, as usual, but I never even considered using my weapon - I would probably be in jail now if I had.
I have reconsidered my position of not packing nonlethal alternatives and am now carrying pepper spray. I think Nurse has had the right idea all along.
BTW, my dog had some serious gashes on her legs and hindquarters, but not life-threatening and she should recover fully.

I can't says it's my "favorite" because it's the only one I've owned but the Walker Razor seems to work fine and it's relatively inexpensive. Like $40 at Sam's Club. No stereo, no Bluetooth. The first time I put them on and turned up the mic, I heard paper crinkling from across the room and thought "Is this what dogs hear all the time?"

80 And I made a startling discovery this week. My niece is interested in shooting! Total surprise to me.

She has been to the range (with an old boyfriend, you know where he lets you pull the trigger but doesn't really teach you anything; not like our Morons). I have no delusions that I should teach her. But she can handle my guns to get some ideas of what might fit her and I can show her the ropes at the range. She is young and very attractive so I know the range dudes will be ready to assist. I already encouraged her to sign up for a class.

88 So, range report: The Savage 06 made a trip to the range, yes, I know you're all shocked, because I wanted to test a couple of changes I made. I added some weight to the rifle to see if I could tame the recoil a bit. Unsurprisingly, it worked. But, since I don't like the way the weights look on the sides of the rail, I have decided the weights need to be on the bottom where I don't have to look at them.

As per usual, gun was dead on. It's going to be interesting to see how things shake out once my new loads arrive.

Side note for weasel: I picked up the Hornady reloading manual and started reading it. Whig suggested the Lee manual and I will pick that one up at a later date.

102 Range report: I zeroed my H&K M27 clone rifle's backup iron sights and Trijicon ACOG Squad Day Optic. As Hrothgar can attest, it's very accurate, as one would expect out of an H&K product. The piston system vice the direct impingement action of an AR platform produces sharper felt recoil, but the bolt carrier and bolt stay cooler longer because hot gas gets vented at the forward end of the handguard instead of the bolt carrier. The biggest downside is, as with almost all H&K products, is the cost.

104 Mrs fd's brother was killed by an accidental gunshot many years ago, long before I met her. His friend was getting in the truck with a loaded shotgun and it went off.

Recently, a friend's son, a good kid, an Eagle Scout, just graduated from college and a great job lined up, accidentally shot and killed himself monkeying around with a gun. That shit scares the heck out of me. Both my boys have guns, and I and others drilled them on safety. One rule we have is no loaded guns in the house, unless it's a self defense weapon and in that case, no playing around with it. I hope they heed the safety rules we all know so well, but still, stupid things happen and you can't take it back.

I thought I was kidding but he mentioned it's close to 4oz of powder per round. The cost, per trigger pull is $50 to $75. The rounds themselves weigh, 1200 grains or so? They are enormous.

I immediately wanted to hand him my credit card and tell him to load a few dozen rounds and take me shooting with his firearm.

Connecticut required three hand written letters of character references from non family members to get a concealed carry permit back when we got stationed there in 1995. I got my permit and renewed it once. IIRC it cost $95 for a 3 or 4 year card and you had to go get finger printed at the state police barracks each time, no idea why you had to do that to get renewed other than harassment from the state.

We finally got out of that state in 2012 after the housing market recovered from the self induced crash of 2008.

Try lighting your gub with natural, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight is too bright and tends to produce harsh shadows that tend to obscure what you're trying to get in your picture. If you use indoor lighting, light your subject from two different light sources from different directions. That will usually wipe out most shadows.

Range report:

It's been a couple weeks, so focused on my carry, the EMP Ronin and one handed shooting. Did pretty well, wasn't too concerned about stance, was focused mainly on trigger pull. Pulling straight back, smooth and deliberate. The same way every time. Then offhand and applying the same process. I shot a tighter group left handed.

Then I relaxed and shot 80 rounds of .22 with the Ruger Mark IV. Took it out to 25 yards and focused on sight alignment. Then pulled in to 7 yards and my grouping were about the size of a quarter.

Fun day at the range.

That's similar to what I have. It's not a big deal but there's no doubt that I'm carrying even if I have my pistol IWB and tucked.

Let me recommend the marine at Gunners Haven in or near Tryon NC again, btw. He does mail order - well, internet, but you know what I mean - holsters but has a storefront with guns now IIRC. That guy can make just about anything you want. I might see if he can make a pocket+paddle setup.

Dang right. The one thing I've never heard anyone say is "I hate I had so much ammunition for that encounter."

Sig recently started making a 17 round for the little 365s and it's great. It gives the gun a near full-size grip, too. It looks like the snag mag only offers a clip for the 12 round stock magazine, but I'm fine with that.

222 In my excitement over the new gub I didn't forget to practice technique today. Focused on trigger pull. I have a theory after watching one of the videos from a few weeks ago. I realized that my 3 bottom fingers on my dominant hand may be too loose on the grip, which makes them extra twitchy when I move my trigger finger. So I have worked on that with my snap caps. Two handed and one handed penny drills today.

The SA-35 feels almost exactly like my RI 1911, but has better sights for 29 year old eyes, a white dot on the front sight makes it much easier to pick up.

For me, it's all about how they feel in the hand. If it doesn't feel good in the hand when I pick it up, odds are I'll give it a pass. They had a rifle chambered in 300 Weatherby Magnum that looked rather interesting, Custom job, barrel like a truck axle, etc. But, whoever did the stock didn't know what there were doing. The stock was obviously touching the barrel in places, etc. Price wasn't bad, as I don't think it had been shot much. I was surprised, though, because whoever had the rifle made was obviously after something accurate yet the barrel was nor properly free floated. I suspect it probably failed, badly, in the accuracy department.

277 Greetings, 'Merican militia.

Today I was talking with youngers about how with Oklahoma's medical pot laws, getting a license is akin to registering your guns. Oklahoma law says it's legal to have guns even if you have pot, but the Fed - if the laws were enforced, would argue otherwise. Suggested if the Fed began cracking down, the laws would get changed, the way Oklahoma liquor laws finally changed when they began enforcing the law on clubs. Meanwhile, when they "legalized" weed, all mine was unfortunately lost in a canoe accident.

Watched the Collider video. Don't mean to be insulting, but I felt like I had just been to a Kamala Harris word salad lecture -- on a whole 'nother level, of course, just considering the enormity of the subject. Cool, though.

The weird part is there is no real noticeable difference between the length of it and the 15 round magazine. Matter of fact, the 15 might be a tad longer. The baseplate has a slightly different angle where they worked their magic, though.

And most of that likely goes away once you figure out how to overcome the "have to check and fidget with it" habit.

I always figured a clip on cell phone case would be a good distraction from the IWB belt clip, but so many people have medical devices and what - not nowadays that it's probably not a big deal to have something like that on your belt. 300 Historically, a lurker on the gun thread…
I see you have a pocket holster. I,ve owned a few. A “Sticky” brand, and a “Clinger” brand one, which I still use. The Sticky was nice, and functional, but just gave it the the daughter for her 38 auto…
Still have the clinger and it’s nice. 9mm Springfield XD9 subcompact. It’s a shooter! Nice placement at the 5 o’clock position, and computable when driving.
Tried a 9 mm Glock, and couldn’t deal with the “cant” of the grip.
This model actually made me a better shooter on my 45 auto.
A Kimber Custom full sized 1911. It’s a boomer, but fits my hands perfectly.
So, Weasel, if any one else again asks you why the Kimber, my suggested response would be, “Duh, Kimber!”
They are first rate, without question.

I've moved from that to fairly routinely having a pistol caliber carbine folded up in a backpack, too. It might stay in the car, but it's a 100+ yard weapon if I need it.

337 I'm not Weasel, but HSTs seem to always be at the top of the comparisons. Our local sheriff's office carried them in the past and that's why I started, and I have been carrying them for over a decade or so and shot hundreds of them out of each 9MM carry pistol and PCC with no feeding issues or failures. The added benefit is you can often find them for sale as overruns - I assume for LEOs - loose in bulk packaging to practice with (or carry, I guess).

Oh well. My Ronin is a good pistol for me. I'm well over 1000k rounds and had one misfire with crappy ammo which I was able to identify, clear and carry on. I can take her down, clean, put back together. I can shoot with either hand, sitting and standing, with and without using the sights.

377 Hey Sharon. I have an Uncle Mike’s shoulder holster for my full-sized Kimber 45.
Look into it. Your heater will fit nicely under you opposite-side armpit, slightly down a little. Adjustable for your use, comfort, and acccessabilty, but if it’s a full-sized 1911, I don’t need to tell you about the weight…

That's what I shot in my 1911 for the longest time, but I tried 185 grain and never went back! Well...except for 200 grain semi-wadcutter in my target 1911, but that doesn't really count.

The 185s seem to shoot much softer, and with the extra velocity they hit just as hard as the 230s. Because velociraptors are tough to put down!

392 Stupid question of the night, what does HST mean?
Posted by: screaming in digital at August 11, 2024 09:20 PM (iZbyp)

HST is the name of a brand of self defense ammo (hollow points) made by Federal.

Posted by: Ed L at August 11, 2024 09:24 PM (yRXSd)

393 Stupid question of the night, what does HST mean?

Not stupid, at all SiD.

While Federal initially developed HST ammo for law enforcement personnel, these cartridges are excellent for self-defense applications. HST ammo is designed to expand upon impact, creating a large wound cavity. The rapid expansion causes the projectile to quickly lose momentum when it strikes a target. This ensures that the round causes damage to the intended target while simultaneously minimizing the risk of over-penetration.

SiD, before you take your SA-35 to the range, check to see if you're liable to hammer bite first. Get a good grip on your SA-35. Lock the slide to rear. Does the back of the hammer touch the webbing of your hand or your hand between your thumb and index finger? You should be able to feel the hammer's touch. If it is touching your hand, wear a glove on your shooting hand when you go to the range. It may save you some pain and possibly some blood, or a band-aid.

411 Happy Gun Thread all!

Range Report:

Took the Kimber Micro 9 to an outdoor range, 25 ft.

Someone left a silhouette target up and just blasted out the center mass. The head was untouched, and it was one of those reactive targets. It was black, but when you shot a hole through it, the edges of the hole are green so you can see the hole very clearly.

I learned that it shoots high at that distance. I thought it was weird, but someone told me that that small gun is meant for close range, so I guess it makes sense.

Because the center mass was blown out, and the head I was aiming at was at the top of the target, it took be a couple of mags to figure out it was going high.

Once I got that dialed in and adjusted my aim, I did pretty good blasting the face out.

In the now classic cop movie "Bullitt," Steve McQueen carries a Colt Diamondback snub nosed revolver in a shoulder holster with the butt facing down for a faster draw. You can see his setup in the movie posters for the film. This the opposite of normal shoulder holsters that have the butt facing up toward the user's armpit.

I've fired 125 grain .357 Magnum Hydra-Shocks out of one of the new Colt King Cobra revolvers (3" barrel small frame revolver) and it is definitely a handful. For small or medium frame revolvers in .357 Magnum, .38 +P defense loads might be a better choice because they're more controllable. They also give you a better chance at follow up shots.

I"ve got some .223 that is about 30-32 years old. Norinco. North China something or other. It's been stored in basements all this time. Not sealed, no battle packs or nothin. 20 rounds per box standing up in a little styrofoam holder inside a carboard box. Stuff shot just fine for me. Posted by: Weasel at August 11, 2024 09:44 PM (uGpeQ)

I understand that S&W Model 19s had this problem if you fed them a constant diet of hot .357 Magnum ammo. A couple of cops I knew in the SD ARNG in the 1990s told me this because they'd had this problem either themselves or with people they knew in their PDs. Model 19s were their issue sidearms through the 1990s. They shot .38 Specials for practice almost exclusively and loaded .357 only for duty patrols or qualification. This reduced wear and tear on their sidearms.

Hah. Just looking for mob control in an urban setting that will buy me time.

548 You lost me? I shoot white box at the range and put my carry ammo back in my mags after I'm done. Periodically I will shoot the carry ammo and put in a new box.

Sorry.
Is the ammo from the same lot, or the same case?
Not a huge deal, but if you are looking for consistency, need to look for this.

550 540 Ruger P89? Pfft, get off my lawn. I have a P85. I use it for test-firing reloads under the theory that I'd REALLY have to screw up before the gun blew apart.

I had one of those bricks, too. Utterly dependable. Thought it was too heavy.

551 I have no problem saying that unless there's some major technological change my P365XL will likely be the last carry gun I ever buy. I mean, I might *buy* another something because I like them and do carry other weapons occasionally, but not with the intent of it being my daily carry weapon. This one is just about perfect for me as an all-arounder.

Oh, the P365 is awesome and I still think it was a good decision considering I knew NOTHING at the time, even though I still have my struggles with it. My thought process at that time was, I can only afford one and so it will be something I can CC.

552 I'd like a PCC but hubby isn't sold on them. Says I have an AR already.....
---------
I will be getting a 5.56 rifle in the near future as well but the PCC because I live in a suburban neighbourhood that's under 150 yards for the longest lines of sight and probably just 30 between, say, houses across the street; legal 10-rd magazines for PCCs here but only 5-rd for rifles; and the prevalence of 9mm ammo also usable with pistols in the family.

This was a good approach.

554 I learned to avoid red dot sights on hand guns. Exception, long range, slow fire, target shooting.

The problem with red dots is you can bring up the gun, ready to shoot, but you don't see the red dot. I have never been in a fire fight, will do most anything to avoid such a situation. Still, I want my handguns combat ready. If you don't see the red dot, by the time you figure out that the gun is pointed down, up, left, or right and bring the red dot on target, you will have been shot dead.

Last CCW class where I had to shoot, I had 4 in the 9 ring. 6 in the xxx center and the rest within the ten ring. Not exceptional, except the instructor insists on standing next to me to show me how to shoot. He deals with many newbes. He had me shaking like a leaf in the wind. It is intolerable that an instructor touches my hands while I am ready to shoot.

At each shot, I raised the barrel, focussed on the front sight and shot as it crossed the target. It worked. I shot fast and accurately. The instructor criticized me for raising the barrel.

Target shooter. Not ready for a combat. First guy to shoot twice on target wins. One has to see that front sight.
