  • Terraforming Mars for $15 a day. (Science)

Or maybe slightly more than that, but still surprisingly cheap on a planetary scale.

The plan is to glitter-bomb the Martian upper atmosphere with two million tons of iron and aluminium dust per year, manufactured from the Martian soil.

The trick is that the dust doesn't have to be delivered directly - getting it a hundred meters off the ground should be enough for the sandstorms to pick it up and do the rest of the work.

This should warm the planet sufficiently that you won't immediately freeze, just asphyxiate. Making the air breathable is left as an exercise for the student.

  • The SLS Block 1B second stage booster being built by Boeing for NASA has been slipping its schedule by one year per year for seven years. (Ars Technica)

Originally due in February 2021 at a cost of $700 million, and rescheduled for April 2027 at a cost of $5 billion just last October - after a whole series of delays and overruns - it is now expected to cost at least $5.7 billion and won't be delivered until 2028 at the earliest.

  • But $229 is $229. (Notebook Check)

The Asus Vivobook 14 is available for that price at Best Buy right now.

That gets you a Core i3 1215U - two performance cores and four efficiency cores, 8GB of RAM plus a spare memory socket, a 128GB M.2 SSD that you would probably want to replace right away, and a 1920x1080 IPS screen that covers 60% of sRGB.

The screen is the only real problem there for basic use. Colours will more poop than pop with this one. You can get cheaper laptops but they will probably also come with meh screens, and they will have Celeron CPUs with no performance cores, making them about half the speed.

Disclaimer: Two for $15.

If everything goes according to plan (which it won't), Artemis 2 will recreate Apollo 8 lunar orbit by no earlier than 2025.

Boeing is the Prime Contractor for SLS and Artemis. The Chicoms will land a man on the Moon before we do, again, of course.

Space Daddy has the contract for the actual lander on the Moon. NASA has some plan for a lunar gateway space station in a HALO orbit around the Moon. The SLS is supposed to get the astronauts to the gateway, the Elon gets them down to the Moon.

If they had sense, they just tell Boeing to forget about it, and let Elon handle it. Looking at this, with Elon's Starship lunar lander, just let that carry the astronauts to begin with, and forget about the SLS.

The dew point here hit 79.9F according to my weather station around 2PM yesterday. That's the highest it has seen since I installed it.

That did not result in the highest "real feel" temp (per the station's algorithm). That occurred on July 5th, 113.3F.

Such calculations are a bit ridiculous. The station's temp resolution is 0.1F (but accuracy is +/-2F), while RH resolution is 1%.

That corresponds to much greater uncertainty in dew point and 'real feel" than 0.1F. Those should be round to the nearest 2F, really.

If you haven't done this already, immediately freeze all access to your credit reports as this will make it much more difficult for bad actors to open credit accounts, take out loans, and make credit purchases using such information. This can be done online and the cost is free. The downside is you say go to get an auto loan. You have to unfreeze that particular credit reporting agency used by the lender to conduct that transaction, but that too can be done online. After that, I think mostly we can best be described as totally screwed.

Why start now? It seems pretty obvious and reasonable to conclude that the official position of the Secret Service was Trump deserved to be assassinated and that it was their job to create the conditions for this to happen. The entire response of the Secret Service since then has been a drag show with lip syncing performances intended to stonewall any serious investigation until the whole matter dies a natural bureforratic death. It's starting to look like her campaign strategy is to whitewash her background, co-opt Trump's positions and campaign style of large rallies, stick to one stump speech that speaks in big generalities of her plans, have a website that echoes these positions without a single detail listed, refuse to have any substantive interaction with with the media that could result in negative reporting, and let the compliant media wing of her campaign, the mainstream media, fill in the blanks with narratives that rival the epic of Gilgamesh. believes strongly that only military members trained to carry those deadly weapons should have access to them

You may have that opinion but that's not what the Bill Of Rights says.

Also as to deadly weapons, do the same for stabbing implements, motor vehicles, horses, attack dogs, martial arts, golf clubs, baseball bats, sturdy tree branches, sharp sticks, stones, etc.

91 My cats have never had trouble with computer sounds, not that through this MacBook Air's speakers, nor the stereo speakers I have on the desktop in my office/bedroom. The only noises that disturb Stirling are fireworks (even though they are outside and distant, he hides under the bed) and the bird calls Miss Linda plays on her phone through this Bird of the Day app she's downloaded. Dagny looks around, but does not seem bothered.

To be fair, a lot of those bird calls freak me out too. The call of a California condor (a vulture)? Brrrr.

It's not as much of a limitation as you might think, provided you do most of your work in the browser and use office type applications. I have a second generation Surface Go that has 8 GB of RAM and roughly an i-core 3 chip in it and it works just fine. The speed of the SSD plays a huge role in these thinly spec machines and should not be underestimated. Swapping out the SSD in that cheap Best buy box for something faster would help a lot I suspect.

I'd have thought it would be knives and clubs of some kind. Remember the image of the battleaxe housewife brandishing her iron frying pan at her milquetoast husband. Ask any working cop, and he'll say, "Women usually start the domestic fights, and with a weapon. Men finish them because they are stronger; but in those scenes, it usually develops that the woman struck first."

The media has popularized this notion that only men are domestic abusers. Piffle.

My Daddy like Big Jake. Long story, but Daddy was sort of gruff with cats. My mother like them, and I inherited that from her, but Daddy was skeptical (turned out that in his younger days, before he got married he had a favored cat, who got killed, and that just killed him, and so he he didn't want to like cats after).

We had a cat, dubbed "Porchy", who showed up as a stray, and hung around the front porch, hence the name.

He wore Daddy down. Daddy would be all gruff and mean, but Porchy didn't care. He just jumped up on Daddy and purred and didn't care.

Daddy then broke down....

A quarter pound of ground beef, grilled in the pan with chili powder and paprika, while the flour tortillas warmed in the oven with pepper jack cheese atop them. I took the tortillas out and loaded the meat onto them. Then, four scrambled eggs, not seasoned, went in atop the meat. Finally each burrito got nuked in the microwave for :30.

Enough for two people, and it was good. The amount of meat and eggs made the tortilla impossible to fold over until you'd eaten some. Maybe next time, half as much meat and one egg apiece; or a second tortilla folded over the first one.

The Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) program would be a voluntary tip reporting system in which the IRS and service industry companies cooperate, according to the announcement Monday.

>>Yep. The strategy seems to become an alternative Trump without ever stating the totalitarian aspects that are sure to follow immediately upon her taking office as president.

She's essentially running as an outsider and an agent of hope and change and largely casting Trump as if he's the current President.

I don't believe in polls, polls are bullsh*t, what I will say is that the leftists I encounter on a daily basis living and working in the NE are now wildly enthusiastic and upbeat whereas before they were downbeat and tight lipped.

They are very chirpy now and no amount of telling them that 2 months ago they were talking about how they needed to dump both the Turnip and Kambala The Horrible to have chance at not being wiped out in November will get them to admit they are hypocritical lunatics.

Basically all they see right now is that if they keep moving forward and everyone does their part, in less than 3 months, Trump is gone and MAGA is relegated to the dustbin of history.

That's all they care about right now.

267 Morning peeps
====
Man, yesterday was the day from hell.

First, I was up at 0530 to drive a daughter to the airport for her to return to CA. Her family is fleeing there and she's the ringmaster. Yes, it's a circus. More about that later, if interested.

Then, after getting back home my wife and I decide to clean our covered front porch. It spans the width of the house. Takes about 5 refills of a 2 gallon pump-sprayers filled with a 50-50 mix of a bleach/mold/algae cleaner and water followed by a hosing off. The house has vinyl siding and the ceiling of the porch is also vinyl. Both get pretty grody with dirt and mold.

So, I'm spraying the ceiling and laying the cleaner on heavy. Got my "bleach" wear on. Got my old glasses on. It's looking like this will take about an hour or so.
Guess who got a literal "eye bleach" even with glasses on?

Yea... it hurt. Vision was blurred all day. Bad. Even after repetitive rinsing with water. It's better this morning.

But on the plus side, the porch looks awesome.

I see frequent reports that their charging stations routinely only have 1 or 2 chargers that actually work. Like most modern American business the super smart MBAs think maintenance is an unnecessary cost sink. 315 I'm not quite sure what a charger hog is, it's not like they are getting to maximum charge level and just loitering at the charger.

What seems to be happening is that the masterminds had envisioned people just charging enough so they can limp along to the next charging station or home, but that's not how humans actually work.

Again, unless and until there is some major breakthrough in battery technology that will allow an EV to fully charge in the same time frame that it takes to fill up a gas tank with petrol, EV's will always be a niche for the rich and mentally unstable.

Mars has virtually no magnetosphere so unless you build domes which resist solar and cosmic radiation any living thing would be "cooked". You could build under the Martian surface but who knows what you find there

342 There's one photo where there is no reflection of the crowd on the plane. They must all be vampires.

Kamala’s crowds are about as real as this image I created in seconds using AI.

"Create an image of a densely packed crowd of enthusiastic supporters at a political rally, with Air Force 2 visible in the background, its engines roaring as it prepares for takeoff. The crowd is seen from behind, with a sea of outstretched arms holding 'Kamala Harris for [Office]' signs, banners, and flags. Many in the crowd have their smartphones raised, capturing the excitement of the moment as they take photos and videos of her arrival.

They're about to be run over or sucked into a jet engine:

I will wait for Kamala, as head of the US Space Council, to accept your contribution.

The whole idea of terraforming and living on another planet is lunacy, we can barely build and maintain stuff on earth or even in near earth orbit, how the hell are we going to build and maintain something that has a 14 month transit time?

It's just more pie in the sky bullsh*t for governments to throw money to their friends and dip their filthy snouts in.

Yeah. The problem is that the ballots won't be real either.
But they will still count them.

350 I live near a small rural town. There's a chain called "Blink EV Charging" or something similar that seems to have a monopoly around here. Looking at the usage via Google I see that they're likely underutilized for the number that are around here.

They also don't have particularly good reviews. Most common complaint; "it don't work."

That's really pronounced when you zoom in like that. There are plenty of other examples in the picture too.

Look at the bizarre characters printed on everyone's shirts, too. That's characteristic of AI generated pictures as well.

353 I saw this post on FB between two members of my husband's old technical writing group. The guy was trying to get in a discussion about the election because he wasn't happy with either choice. She was every MSM talking point- Trump is evil, woen's healthcare, felon, and made my taxes go up.

I think they are ready for no elections. Someone is chosen for them and everyone has to "vote" for the D. No more messy primaries.

Nope, whatever the person posted on Twitter is all. By the way, it's very easy to find stuff on a topic through their search. I entered

"Kamala ai crowds" to get all of these results. Quite a few people are having a field day.

357 Democrats are allegiant to their Party not the country. They don't care who their candidate is. They don't care if their betters selected the candidate, they think this method of selection rather than election is okey dokey and will turn out great.

358 I don't believe in polls, polls are bullsh*t, what I will say is that the leftists I encounter on a daily basis living and working in the NE are now wildly enthusiastic and upbeat whereas before they were downbeat and tight lipped.

The Left leadership understands Mimetic Theory and know that the vast majority of people can be manipulated into eating bugs and being happy owning nothing.

Th influencer just needs to package whatever poison they want people to desire in a form where people learn to like and desire poison.

Covid-1984 was a global example with Kill shots, masks and social deprivation.
