THE MORNING RANT: Might Our Overseas Military Adventurism & Proxy Wars Someday Result in a Foreign Superpower’s Troops on Our Own Border?

Would America’s global interventionists be OK with the Russian Navy docking in Tijuana, or with Chinese ships patrolling the Gulf of Mexico from a naval base in Matamoros?

That prospect horrifies me, but it would be a natural evolution of the behavior of global super-powers if the US chooses to keep fighting proxy wars against those countries and to station our troops directly on their far-away borders.

I shouldn’t have to throw this disclaimer out, but I will. I loathe Vladimir Putin. I loathe him for his role as a hostile KGB agent during the Cold War, and for his role in funding anti-petroleum activists as a means of destabilizing the West, and for his decision to launch the war against Ukraine which has claimed so many lives in a stalemate over a small strip of land. But I also detest the western war profiteers who seek to keep the bloody Slavic turf battle going so that they can enrich themselves from that sausage grinder and from its corresponding political graft, much of which comes from US taxpayers. There are people and companies getting rich off that war, and they are wanting to keep it going until the last Ukrainian man has been killed in battle.

Unfortunately, headlines like this give Russia no avenue to withdraw or to offer up a peace plan:

“Ukraine is on an ‘irreversible’ path to NATO, but only after war with Russia ends” [AP – 7/10/2024]

The 32-members of NATO on Wednesday formally declared Ukraine on an “irreversible” path to membership in the Western military alliance, offering a bare but more binding assurance of protection once its war with Russia ends.
NATO on Wednesday also announced a long-term commitment of security assistance to Ukraine, and confirmed establishment of a new NATO center aimed at ensuring that Ukraine gets a more reliable flow of arms and training from members of the alliance.

In other words, the United States has announced - through NATO - that unless Russia conquers Ukraine, NATO troops will be stationed in Ukraine, on land that was once part of the Soviet Union, and directly on Russia’s border. NATO troops include American troops.

Why wouldn’t Russia then want to respond by employing its military capacity on our border? This is actually a discussion that is actively going on in Russia.

"Russians on Kremlin State TV yesterday declared that Mexico was their military ally and they are wanting to place their missiles on Mexican territory so Mexico can attack the United States," Jake Broe a former U.S. Air Force nuclear and missile operations officer, posted on X next to a screen grab. "This is insane."

Mexico is already defying the US with an accommodating response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Mexico has condemned Putin's invasion of Ukraine but has adopted a policy of neutrality and refused to participate in sanctions against Moscow.

Mexico is in turmoil, with large swaths of the country controlled by criminal gangs that are hostile to the US. Even if the Mexican government could somehow defeat the cartels, Mexico is prone to electing anti-American leftists. As we saw with Venezuela, a modern Latin American country only has to vote communist once, then it will get communism and poverty in perpetuity.

What about China, which is seeking to spread its influence around the globe? Would a Chavista Mexico invite Chinese warships to dock in Baja, or to patrol our shores from a base on Mexico’s Gulf Coast?

Whatever political direction it takes, Mexico is likely to join the BRICS confederation at some point (which already includes Russia, China, and Iran, among others) and it is conceivable that BRICS may someday decide to provide for each others’ mutual defense as a counterweight to NATO. Why wouldn’t Mexico welcome Iranian BRICS troops to a base on the Rio Grande, just like Finland is welcoming NATO troops to its border with Russia?

China seems to already be wetting its toes in our hemisphere…

Our ruling class is terminally obsessed with (and profiting from) military conflicts on foreign shores, especially NATO vs Russia. If we’re not careful, we may get the opportunity to see Russia and its ally China reciprocate by bringing their militaries to our own southern border.

But, if you saw what Tucker was circulating yesterday, you might be under the impression (as I have been for a couple of years now) that "Watergate" was a rope-a-dope to oust Nixon, probably perpetrated by the IC (who very possibly killed Kennedy).

We are not the honorable country I grew up thinking we were.

I went there once over 20 years ago. It was a shithole. Stunk horribly. I felt like I was developing black lung after a few days. New construction next to empty buildings across the street from dumps with homeless camping out front.......I have no desire to ever go back there.

In fairness, CC debt almost certainly just gets higher and higher, regardless of the state of the economy. Too many people are stupid when it comes to debt. They just charge and charge and charge as if it's all fake money.

Sadly, a number of family friends are getting divorced. I was asked to look over the draft papers. In every instance, I was shocked at how much CC debt there was. Like $30-40k. And these are relatively affluent, double-income couples that aren't extravagant. When I asked "what was all this debt for?" they were sorta like "I dunno."

The examples he used were the British Navy, which was slashed after World War One, but the Admiralty staff kept growing at five percent a year.

65 The elephant in the room with China is that their "One Child" policy - which was only recently rescinded - pretty much sealed their fate.

Forty years of non-replacement theory numbers plus the disproportionate ratio of male babies to female babies in that time period may not make much of a difference on the short term, but they are starting to see the ramifications of that policy as more and more of that generation reaches childbearing age.

My wife and I put everything on our cards but pay it off every month. Bank hasn't made a dime off of us as it regards interest.

That said, to a lot of people, credit is "free" money. Once the interest starts piling up, it then just becomes something to kinda/sorta manage.

All of this is in service to earning airline miles, I might add...

I do the same thing and it's good practice. Debt is the big killer of companies and families. If you have to charge something and can't pay it off in a few months, then you really can't afford it. That's reality.

The only debt you should have is mortgage and car payment/lease. But even with car interest rates being so high now, paying cash might be a better option if you can swing it.

They do make money in other ways off of every swipe, but yeah. No sweet interest payments.

I remember in my younger, more ignorant days, a credit card company offered me a zero-interest balance transfer. I called the company to ask what they got out of it, since I would likely be paying it off before the due date.

Woman took a second and decided to level with me, "Well, not everyone is as responsible as you. Some end up having to pay the back interest." I was not one of them.

Sadly, a number of family friends are getting divorced. I was asked to look over the draft papers. In every instance, I was shocked at how much CC debt there was. Like $30-40k. And these are relatively affluent, double-income couples that aren't extravagant. When I asked "what was all this debt for?" they were sorta like "I dunno."

I saw some video where the interviewer was asking single women how much they expected their future mate to make. It was comical. Basically all of them think they are going to marry a 30 year old Elon Musk that lets them quit their jobs, drive a exotic car, have a 5k sq foot home, vacation in Europe, etc.

When the interviewer tells them the average 30 year male makes like $50k a year, and the top 25% is like a median of $80k, they couldnt believe it.

I love my partner. He is a wonderful human, but dang he stinks as a hinge. He often accidentally brings his other partner into our conversations in ways that don’t feel good.

For example, my meta has a boundary that he has agreed to. Instead of telling me that he has this boundary, he tells me that she has the boundary, so we (he and I) have to adhere to it. When I’ve said that I don’t like that, because it feels like she’s controlling our relationship, he gets upset and thinks that I don’t like her. I’ve tried to explain that he could tell me the boundary as if it was his own, since as far as our relationship goes it is, and I’d understand, but that when he tells me it’s her boundary that we have to stick to it makes me upset because it feels like he doesn’t want the boundary.

Yes, there is a proper use of debt. Companies use debt all the time. But that's generally to use borrowed money to make money. Their debt is basically a profit center. For 99% of consumers, other than mortgages and car payments, debt makes no sense.

When we bought the wife's Honda CR-V we didn't haggle we just asked for the price out the door while they tried to get us to finance the car and buy all of that extra stuff they make the big money on.

They finally gave us the price and I pulled out my credit card and said OK we will buy it. They had a fit and asked if we had a check. I told them nope but I could go home and get a check and come back tomorrow.

Needless to say they accepted the card that day because they didn't want to lose a sale and they ate the 3% fee. They were not happy with us at all and it showed when the car started having rattle issues. We are never buying a car from them again we will go to a different dealer.

I suspect that in the long run, video creators will have to move to the Patreon/etc. paradigm rather than depending on advertising the platform they're on not changing the rules weekly or fucking them over for their viewpoints. It'll end up meaning way less content.
