Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Scary Pranks Cafe![]() Pont du Gard, Provence, France The Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nimes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. The Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands almost 50 m high and is on three levels -- the longest measuring 275 m -- created a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece. What a beautiful spot. Going for a little hike. Wingsuit guy looks like he might smack into the mountain a few times but I think distances are a little distorted. Kayaking over a falls. Bernese paradise. Dogs are good eggs. Chocolate Colosseum. Little puppy is too cute. To be a cat is to always be "on." Riding a mountain bike... through an abandoned mine. At bedtime I'm going to start counting alpacas. Whenever I see horses on the beach I can only think of Planet of the Apes. Too much fun. Ever wonder how -- and why -- Venice was built in the water? Apparently Venetians were fleeing the Huns and built a new settlement on marshy islands. They drove big timbers into the soft earth (which was barely cohesive enough to support a human's weight), which compressed and stabilized the ground, then leveled the timbers and covered them with planks. I remember they showed the underwater timbers holding Venice up in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I thought, "That's stupid, that can't be true," even though, at the same time, I thought it must be true, because a movie wouldn't get something like that wrong. (I know they're dishonest and professional fantasists, but no one likes to be mocked for gross stupidity -- it's the sort of unbelievable thing that must be true, if you know what I mean.) Venice really is just built on big wooden poles hammered into the ground. I still think it's dumb. But then again, I don't have to worry about an invasion of hostile savages. Right? Right? (Update: Actually, it wasn't quite true. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, or LGX as all fans know it, showed free-standing poles in the water. But this video shows them driven into soft, boggy ground. Then again, some of the expansion of the city might have included pounding in polls into more-open water. I dunno.) I'd say this disaster is the boss' fault, for building something so catastrophically unstable that some minor clumsy handling would bring the whole thing down, but you know these guys are getting fired anyway. (BTW, if this is just an unacknowleged clip from a movie, then I'll change my stance to say "it fits with the 'scary pranks' theme of the post.") I don't understand anything about this. So here's a prank. You know the family that is always dropping balloons filled with paint or milk on each other's heads? And to be honest, I mostly see the dad smashing the mom and kids with the paint balloons. I'm starting to think this is less of a playful family tradition and more of case of paternal bullying. Whatever the case may be, the father, in all of his devious cruelty, pretends that his attempt to drop a balloon filled with milk on his wife failed. Oops! (Sound on!) But that was just a ruse to make the subsequent attack all the more devastating and psychologically scarring. "Come out to the coast, we'll have a good time, we'll do some ice-climbing..." Testing your dog to see if he'll eat your food if you fall asleep or die. Spoiler: Your dog is always hungry and food tastes good. Anyone with a decent drone can now make Peter Jackson look like a chump. Or a pussy. Mountain goat: Will you be my fren?

Venice really is built on pilings.
It took a lot of trees to do this, and more trees to build their merchant ships and warships. I read somewhere that by the time Venice was in decline as an independent city-state, they were having to import logs from a very long way off, which helped them run out of money faster. I just checked Wikipedia and it didn't mention the above fact. It could still be true but likely other factors were more important. Posted by: mr_jack at August 08, 2024 07:33 PM (LNPSJ) 18

What did I miss? Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice He was well known by a Danish prince, it is reported. A fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. Now the bartender has told Werner that break-dancing is part of the Olympics. There was a muted cheer audible from under the bucket that still encapsulates Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's cabeza, yet Werner shares not in the merriment, wondering only if competitive yodelling will follow in its wake. There is an uncle of mine, however, who would fare well thusly. In many a Swiss canton he informed the locals that they had just been served and he was quite willing to bring it. Werner has switched to Everclear, which is on short supply with Frau Kamala being in the vicinity. Ach, the horror, the horror. Posted earlier, but I got to go the ER for kidney stones.
The doctor asked if I had any pain medication at home and I said yes. He wouldn't write a prescription for higher quality meds for a day or two because of that, even though he was the one that viewed the CAT scan and told me the size of the kidney stones that were passing through my system. We're at a point where doctors refuse to write prescriptions for people in pain. It's incredible. Lesson learned, btw. If they ask if you have pain medication at home, the answer is no. The answer has to always be no. Otherwise they apparently aren't allowed to help relieve your pain. I like the fact that Venice is shaped like a fish when viewed from overhead. I suspect that at some point some people said "you know, if we extend Venice just a bit more, it would look like a fish." It looked more like a steak in it's earlier years but I think they leaned in to the fish shape thing.

Much of Washington DC is built on swamplands, as was my home of Syracuse, NY. In both cases massive increases in drainage combined with pile driving poles made from tree trunks made for converting acreage to places buildings could be built upon without sinking out of sight.
DC's location was chosen as a good place (otherwise) to build a national capitol because it was between two states and somewhat central to the original colonies. Syracuse's location was because of the nearby salt springs, salt production being the first major local industry. Posted by: BobM at August 08, 2024 07:42 PM (JI37s) 41

I put "shooter" in quotes because there's no way anyone on the roof would have a chance to fire a shot. The SS was watching that building like hawks because the cops were panicking and running all around it. They would be watching all of that through their optics.
Willowed: Setting aside the suppressed fire that was making the two counter-snipers jump around on the roof and appear to want to flee: The now-dead shooter was almost certainly Yearick and not Crooks, and he probably never got off a single shot. Think about it. The SS shooters were watching the cops all around that building and knew something was up. They were ready to go the moment he popped his head up to fire. And they did. There's a video clip of the long haired guy looking at the crowd. That was the first opportunity the SS shooters had to see him over the roof, and he was shot. He never pulled the trigger a single time. Never had the chance. Posted by: Moron Robbie - Muzzle flash in window, SS costume, tattoos, and outside of perimeter at August 08, 2024 07:48 PM (e1C2m) 60

There was a problem a few years ago when the water level dropped in certain areas and the pilings were exposed. At the time of the 1906 earthquake & fire, a lot of San Francisco was built on land reclaimed from the sea-- by draining parts of SF Bay & adding landfill-- wood & rocks. The above is more reminiscent of Mike Myers' Dieter - the despair must be more cosmic, tinged with melancholy acceptance of the hard truths of entropy and a universe which lurches interminably to a Heat Death that awaits for all. Also, Kamala Harris is a non-starter - Werner has standards, and he is not willing to be burdened by that which she has been. More Everclear, bartender. Run a tab, bitte. Posted by: It's weird, nonsensical, and I want off this shitty planet -- Driven entirely by feminism lying to women and convincing them that they're men and that engaging in meaningless toil and climbing the corporate ladder through their 20s and 30s somehow makes them more attractive / valuable, when it mainly does the opposite. Unlike men the women won't date down economically or socially and have advanced themselves out of their own dating market, and they are also competing with the 20 year olds (the same ones that they once were, and were engaging in the same fun attention-seeking with older men). But they aren't serious candidates for relationships for men who want families, so the women choose the good old standby of trying to shame men who, although not wealth or status that women are drawn to, also have traits and characteristics they desire in a woman and who reject their old maid qualities. And their cats, I guess. Posted by: Moron Robbie - Muzzle flash in window, SS costume, tattoos, and outside of perimeter at August 08, 2024 08:18 PM (e1C2m) 128

I would point out that something like that occurred in P.C. "Ever wonder how -- and why -- Venice was built in the water?
Right?" Boss, pile drivers are essential construction implements to this day. Posted by: Gref at August 08, 2024 09:48 PM (5fDan) 345

I get that he's still fresh meat but it's funny to me how Walz has sort of become the primary target of conservatives. Articles about his past and his time as governor are 3 to 1 over articles negative about Kamala.
Then again, maybe it's because Walz has actually lived a life and has a record to scrutinize. Kamala hasn't done anything. She's a complete empty suit. At least Obama was a professional rabble rouser. Posted by: Shenanigans at August 08, 2024 11:58 PM (lcyZw) 369
