Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | It Is Time To Reintroduce The Concept Of Patriotism And National Pride Into College AthleticsThe United States has always been a powerhouse in Olympic competition, and perhaps our best sport is swimming. We have dominated for many reasons, but a big part of it is our superb college swimming tradition. The competition at the top of the college ranks is ferocious, and combined with a vibrant club team network makes American swimming the best in the world. Except...a lot of those coveted slots in the elite club teams and collegiate teams are taken by foreign swimmers! According to the NCAA's data from 2022 (the most current I could find), about 14% of the Division 1 collegiate swimming ranks are foreign. That means that America's taxes and tuition that paid for the facilities and the coaching and the biomechanical and physiological research go to support foreigners who take that largesse and whip our asses at the Olympics! I do not expect the NCAA to do anything. They are, after all, one of the most breathtakingly sleazy organizations on the planet. They care not a whit about their student athletes, America, patriotism, or national pride. They care about one thing...money. If the NCAA makes more money subsidizing foreign athletes, then that's what they are going to do. But our taxes paid for most of the vast athletic infrastructure that is used by these foreign swimmers when they come to America to train. Why should the American people fund the athletics of other countries? We already pay for much of their defense; we take in the scum from their jails via our lax border policies; we fund much of the basic and applied scientific research; so maybe it is time that we told them to pound sand and pay for their own athletics. Why? Because for better or worse, there is a huge amount of national pride embedded in the success of our athletes on the world stage. It is important for our national self image that we are competitive, and it is blatantly obvious that our geopolitical adversaries understand this. Why else does China spend a huge amount on their athletics, including bribing the international drug testing organization so that their athletes can compete without worrying about pesky little things like positive drug tests? Will restricting foreign athletes diminish the competitiveness of our athletes? Possibly. Or...it will open up opportunities for American athletes who were not able to take advantage of the structural superiority of our collegiate athletic systems because of the slots taken by foreign athletes. The facile arguments that we should be open to all fall on deaf ears. We have spent generations supporting the rest of the world...it is time to focus on America and Americans. Globalism should be a dirty word, and if that means reserving American athletics for Americans; then so be it.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

College sports are early farm teams for the majors. Either take the money out or make it legitimate. Today, the introduction of National Pride and Patriotism is corporate. It's money; the gamblers, the advertisers, the government and the pro teams. It's for them not us.

This may be a well known thing but I just heard about it today. In its zeal to be “green” France provided no A/C at the Olympics village where the athletes are staying. Summer, Paris, no A/C. Fun!!
So some countries including the US brought portable A/c units for the athletes. And now the same left wing fucks who insisted on no a/c are complaining that it’s unfair for rich countries to provide a/c while poor countries can’t. Pure fucking madness all around at these Olympics. Posted by: Croix at August 04, 2024 12:08 PM (5jozk) 8

Contrarian take here: I've detested the Olympics ever since they shrugged off that trifle of unpleasantness that happened back in 1972. The modern Olympics have always been a joke. They began as a homoerotic celebration of the aristocratic leisure class, and have become the world's second-most corrupt major sporting venue, right after FIFA. The notion that the medals count proves the superiority of a country is a form of stolen distinction; the triumph belongs to the individual competitors, not the crowd at home, exactly as a winning season for the Tampa Bay Rays says nothing about Florida or about Tampa Bay institutionally. For the Love of Life Orchestra, the medals themselves aren't even made of gold, silver, and bronze anymore, which is a fitting synecdoche for the falseness of the whole operation. So there.

The NCAA is indeed incredibly… what’s the right word? Corrupt…. I think that’s as good a word as any
Because of their greed and corruption they’re in the process of destroying my favorite sports viewing pastime: college football It’s probably already destroyed. The tradition is almost entirely gone. I mean USC-Michigan used to be a special game… if meant the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day…. Now it’s just a regular season game. Don’t even get me started on NIL…. I know that was a court decision, not the NCAA… but it’s just the minor leagues now. At least they still play the Iron Bowl every year…. Posted by: LinusVanPelt at August 04, 2024 12:14 PM (n048s) 21

The following is true for California state universities so it’s probably true in many states: over the last 10 years at least it’s become a trend that exceptional CA high school students (having nothing to do with athletics) cannot get accepted into CA universities. They can have perfect GPA, sky high SAT scores, extracurricular activities etc….. but if accepted they’d only pay in-state tuition so they’re slot is taken by a foreign student who is paying much more than in-state. Before we left CA we saw graduating seniors in our local HS going all over the nation, anywhere but CA. I just thought it was peculiar when a neighbor kid in SoCal went to University of Maryland with zero family connection to that state or school…

I've wondered about that. The things the athletes do today are almost impossible. Why? Is it better eating? Training? Technology, like your floor example?
Posted by: Diogenes It's all about the equipment. The balance beam used to be made of solid wood, with rather sharp edges. Now it is hollow aluminum, padded and has springs at the ends to facilitate bigger dismounts. The springboards for the vault are unrecognizable from the ones we used. Ours were wood. Now the springs are 8-10 inches high and super bouncy. The vaulting table is padded and higher and angled. Back in the days of old, the vaulting horse had a head and tail. I may have made that last bit up. So the equipment has altered the sport significantly and prolonged the joints of the athletes. Don't get me started on how soft the landing mats are now. 4 College sports are early farm teams for the majors. Either take the money out or make it legitimate. Today, the introduction of National Pride and Patriotism is corporate. It's money; the gamblers, the advertisers, the government and the pro teams. It's for them not us.
Posted by: Braenyard ======= You are correct that in major revenue producing sports that they are all but pros in name and with the name and likeness sales by athletes--they are essentially pro. That is why, by and large, I care not about sportsball nor Olympics. And yes, I was an athlete during High School and before to about 2nd grade. All I got from it was a knee injury that has bothered me for decades now and required early artificial replacement. As a grad student at a recognizable current athletic power, I saw the degradation that pro sportsball brings to academics as a TA with those students then later as a prof at an up and rising program. So I care not what happens to NCAA football or basketball. At least baseball runs its own minor leagues and I found college athletes other than the revenue sports as usually good students. In the last 5 years, the NCAA has taken millions of dollars and spent it all on hookers and blow.
They have sat silent while men are taking over women's sports including track, swimming, soccer and basketball. Weird how they haven't infiltrated gymnastics? They sat back and watched ESPN completely take over college football and destroyed pretty much all of the traditions of the sport going back over 150 years just so they could replicate the XFL. Players and coaches can get more money in college than they would ever make in the NFL and it has turned into a spending war between mega rich donors at about 20 schools. There is no limit to how much they can pay some 18 year old kid. These are public institutions supported by tax dollars that are completely controlled by handful of unelected donors. You can't transfer 4 times in 4 years and tell me you are a student either. After all of this, they don't even show up to play in their bowl games because they might sprain an ankle. Now VU is A two year college, mostly, but does have some bachelor degree programs. Girls friends start yapping oh that's just a community college and you can't get a good education there. Girl starts thinking maybe she should go to Purdue instead. I had a casual conversation with her about it and said yes you can get a good education there and it would be free due to that scholarship. Is Purdue giving you that? No. Well. Perhaps your friends are not informed about VU. Girl calls VU to ask some questions about the scholarship and transferring to a 4 year school after her two years. Answer? Why would you need to transfer? You already have an associates degree from Ivy Tech, so you'll be focusing on the major classes and have the equivalent of a bachelor degree in two years. As with most things in our current society the problem is not with college sports, it's with the people running them. College sports takes in billions in TV and merchandise, more than some professional sports. They are a huge cash generating machine and therefore a huge target for people to take money. Nobody pays to watch kids go to statistics or electrical engineering classes but every Fall weekend millions pay to tune in to State U vs Other State U. Furreners who train in the US should have an asterisk next to their medals. At the very least, conservative..."conservative" media, blogs and such, rather than complain, because the complaints always fall on deaf ears and sound weak, should advertise/promote the medals won by tgese furreners as being part of the US medal count. Every time one of these people wins something and it is noted, it should also be emphasized where they trained.

And the government doesn’t spend hardly anything on college sports or any sports for that matter comparably speaking.
Posted by: polynikes You would be surprised if you ever knew much about college financing. For the most part, most institutions lose money on sports with about 10-15 sports programs at those colleges making money nationwide. The gap is made up by student fees, subsidies via tax deductions and donations, state/local funding for things like stadiums and facilities, and so on. At several universities, that I attended years ago, there were mandatory fees on students to help the athletic programs and thus that is reflected then in the need for many for student aid from the gubmint including those loans that have recently been forgiven. The fees now are much steeper and many students at universities are essentially tapped out because of it. Separate those sports (most of them revenue losses) from the universities and you remove a driver in college costs. Posted by: whig at August 04, 2024 01:06 PM (qdbNv) 182

This seems to be one of the least patriotic Olympics, American-wise that I've seen for a while.
1)NBC almost never shows the playing of the national anthem when our teams win gold. But, when they do- 2) The athletes rarely sing the anthem and if they do actually sing it's looks like they're barely mumbling the words. Man, if I won gold, you couldn't stop me from singing the national anthem loud and proud, baby. 3) To their credit, Ledecky and Madden sang the Star Spangled Banner during the presentation of their medals for the 800 meter. Ledecky kinda mumble sang but, good for Madden sang loud while beaming with pride- Bonus! points for her. 4) I suppose NBC is against nationalism and patriotism as they're constantly pushing how the we're all one globalist view of the Olympics. Meh. I think that's what relates to CBD's complaint above. If we're all just one big grey goo mass of humans, why not have foreign athletes train here at American expense? Good points, CBD. But foreigners pay bonkers, and I mean bonkers, amounts in tuition. There's a lot of potential discounts American kids can use when going to college, and the schools have to counter that by heavily recruiting from out of the country. Foreigners can pay double or even triple what an American student pays. The argument that they are taking too much of our taxes, maybe. But there's an argument to be made that they ARE helping keeping the lights on at the college sports facilities. And if they are, why should they not participate in the sports they help fund?
Colleges also rake in far too much money from alumni loving their college athletics to ever cut it. At least for boomer alumni, there is still too much of a connection. Posted by: LizLem at August 04, 2024 01:22 PM (QAK8m) 225

Yea Ivy Tech!
Posted by: Quarter Twenty Our small town high school has a dual credit course system with Ivy Tech. Take a class that is offered by IT through the high school and get credit from the HS and from IT. My girl did this and literally earned an associates degree magna cum laude from IT two weeks before she graduated from high school. It's a general education degree which means she won't have to take all those classes and can focus on her major classes at Vincennes University. And because she maintained a high GPA for IT, they refunded the cost of her classes. This kid is getting a damn good education for free! Because that is what she wants. Not sports, not partying, not socializing. Education. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at August 04, 2024 01:25 PM (4XwPj) 240

Posted by: Piper ===== Pretty much all politicians today are corrupt--legally or illegally. All you have to do is look at their wealth disclosures before they enter office and while they are in office. That does not even account for the generational wealth that their spawn and family get from their connection to the elected head of that particular crime family. Donald Trump is one of the few pols that actually lost money from it and gave back his salary during his term in office. Doesn't mean though that make Martha Stewart or Lori Loughlin Snow White either. Both leveraged their position in society and money to get what they wanted except they got caught. My point is not of their virtue but rather the FedGov often pursues criminal charges of a few token ruling class elites. This is simply for show to keep the peasants from realizing how bad the corruption in DC actually is. Posted by: whig at August 04, 2024 01:30 PM (qdbNv) 256

There was a competition to swim from Santa Monica to Catalina doing only the breaststroke, and the three women who entered the race were
a brunette, a redhead and a blonde. After approximately 14 hours, the brunette staggered up on the shore and was declared the fastest breaststroker. About 40 minutes later, the Redhead crawled out and was declared the second place finisher. Nearly 4 hours after that, the blonde finally came ashore and promptly collapsed in front of the worried onlookers. Posted by: Diogenes at August 04, 2024 12:31 PM (W/lyH) I don't know how you do this research, but researchers have determined that the equipment modern athletes have...the track, the shoes and clothes, the tech...definitely has improved performance. They've taken old footage of athletes, the ones running on dirt or concrete tracks, and if the older athletes could compete on our modern tracks today, they would blow the current athletes out of the water. Supposedly there's a runner, that if he ran with Usain Bolt today, would beat Bolt by a lot. Again, though, I'm not sure how you actually quantify that in research. But that was the findings.
