  • Should we try cooling the planet with sulphur dioxide? (Japan Times)

I mean, we know that it works. What's the catch?
"The whole notion of spraying sulfur compounds to reflect sunlight is arrogant and simplistic," Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki said. "There are unintended consequences of powerful technologies like these, and we have no idea what they will be."
Yeah, we have no idea what would happen if large amounts of sulphur dioxide were suddenly released into the upper atmosphere because such a thing has never happened before.
Raymond Pierrehumbert, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Oxford, said he considered solar geoengineering a grave threat to human civilization.

"It's not only a bad idea in terms of something that would never be safe to deploy," he said. "But even doing research on it is not just a waste of money, but actively dangerous."
I'll just pause here to say that this is a wonderful case of nominative determinism, because this is precisely what you would expect to hear from someone named Raymond Pierrehumbert.
Opponents of solar geoengineering cite several main risks. They say it could create a "moral hazard," mistakenly giving people the impression that it is not necessary to rapidly reduce fossil fuel emissions.
In other words, I don't want to solve the problem. I want global communism.

15 Good morning, Pixy and the Horde. I woke up over an hour ago and can't get back to sleep. I also have company, so I mustn't make noise.

The start-up "Making Sunsets", IMO a really punchable carbon-credit seller, pissed off the Mexican government with its unauthorized injection of sulphur particles into the local skies. The excuse the polluter gave for doing it was something like "I did it in Mexico because I live here". I thought my former neighbor was bad for throwing empty bottles and bags of human waste into his backyard! I never learned if he was deported into a vat of sulphuric acid.

16 The Peugeot Pierrehumbert was a commuter vehicle introduced in the mid 70s in response to the Arab oil crisis.

With three cylinders, three wheels, and three doors it was gay as a three dollar bill.

Only two remain in existence and neither in running condition. One is a sideshow attraction in a traveling circus in Hungary and the other serves as a field obstacle in a paintball park on the outskirts of Bratislava.

Dogsitting grandpuppy since Wed night. Wonderful beastie (shepherd mix) but exhausting for someone accustomed to ancient dogs. Old Cat is still angry at the pup and pup tries to imitate the hiss and growl. Sounds like puppy is choking on something so first few times he tried it, I'm running to get something out of his mouth.

He leaves tonight and Old Cat and I will be able to sleep.

51 Evening and morning for a scintillating Sunday to all the AoSHQ outposts! (I just typed that word to see if I could do it without too much fumbling. It's just Sunday, neither more nor less.)

I actually slept six hours straight last night. Some weird dream was in there about riding a motorcycle in the neighborhood where I work on a cold rainy night, driving it up a side street, and *leaving* it (??) to try to walk the rest of the way home. This path led me through the back entrances of some shops that, looking back, I've actually been inside of during waking life.

Just before I woke up, I was searching on that same side street for the abandoned motorbike.

The dreaming mind knows what the dreaming mind knows, I guess.

I never trusted the Conways - especially Kellyanne. She was definitely the big leaker within the WH. Around Oct 2020, when Trump came down with COVID, I wrote at the time that it was Kellyanne that gave it to him. She had already left the WH by that time, but somehow wormed her way back in for that reception for Amy Coney Barrett. Shortly after that, Trump had COVID. I suspected at the time that she exposed him to it on purpose, knowing that she had it. Tinfoil hat stuff at the time, I know. I stand by that statement now.

Trump's strategy is to continue talking to any and all interviewers to keep his name out there in free media. His goal is to get Kamala and him on the same stage, where the contrast between the two will be too stark for the electorate to ignore.

Kamala's strategy is to stay as invisible as possible and let the MSM do her campaigning for her. Her goal is to avoid any forum where she's forced to speak and have DJT respond in real-time. She needs to run out the clock to win.

Mercedes-Benz remembers. In the '70s and '80s, they sold more diesel sedans in the US than they did gassers. People saw that diesel was cheaper, AND you got better mileage.

Now it's hard to find a diesel sedan by them or anybody. Maybe trucks, but no sedans. BMW might have some.

173 Diesel was less expensive than gasoline. By quite a lot, actually. Why would it not? It is a less refined product.

However, it contains more energy density per gallon than gasoline. This is sometimes claimed for part of the reason for price hikes. One of the motor pools at a unit I was around still had some of the old school "multi-fuel" deuce and a half trucks. They would run on either gasoline or about anything else, with minor adjustments. They didn't care too much about the particulars of the fuel.

One old guy said they ran a mixture of MoGas (low octane government gasoline) and 90 weight gear oil when no other fuels were available to run in trucks over in Viet Nam. Said it smoked pretty bad, but ran fine. Kills mosquitos too, I betcha.

186 It would be illustrative if somehow an easily verfiable and auditable trail of ballots and votes and QC against official vote tallies as "delivered" for every state. "Here's what the secretary of state has published"

The only way would be paper ballots that could be associated with a voter, and nobody is set up to do that any longer.

Elections probably haven't been secure since they sent all the VoteMatic machines to the scrappers. A big lever opened the booth up with a curtain. Flipped the levers with who you wanted to vote for. By pulling the lever open, this cast your vote, the curtain opened with a nice "DING" bell. At least it seemed like you must have voted anyway.

Now they take your ballot and stuff it in what looks like a shredder. Hm.

When I mentioned it to my regular mechanic, he said, "Yes, they're reliable and tough. But they're better for long highway running than for driving in the city. We've had to clear up problems with a lot of them that are only driven in commutes and short trips."

219 The AMD 7xxx chips that are still current and on sale work 100% fine, and in #twoweeks there'll be faster ones. And once Intel ships the microcode update to make their chips stop burning themselves up to beat AMD on benchmarks they'll likely be fine too. Posted by: Ian S.

"Likely be fine." That's rich. Intel has stepped up and become the 1970s to 1990s GM. It has managed to become a shrinking business at a time when demand for their products has never been greater. I have used Intel products for decades and they worked, for my purposes, flawlessly. Beginning in the Skylake period something went off the rails and they have been a different company since then with this latest cock up being an textbook business school example of how not run a company. I have my stink eye on when it comes to Intel now. As a person who could but doesn't want to deal with building PCs finding acceptable AMD machines from my preferred vendors is non starter. It is a mess. I have until Windows 10 EOL for this to get sorted out. I am getting a wee bit antsy. It would be sweet if metor/lunar lakes solves all this but since we are dealing with modern Intel...well, the winter of computing discontent...

Yep. Sulfur dioxide does in fact result in sulfuric acid in the atmosphere. Our genius thinks his approach will put it high enough up that it won't rain out. At least right away.

But wait, there's more: When volcanos (like Mt. Pinatubo which inspired our genius here) put sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere where our genius wants to put it, it damages the ozone layer.

236 The Hunga-Tonga 100% natural Volcanic eruption in '22 placed 400,000 metric tons of Sulfur Dioxide into the atmosphere...yet they tell us global warming increased rapidly soon after.
Part of the reason is that in that one day period it also increased the entire global water vapor amount, at all levels of the atmosphere, by fully 10% which will take between 5-8 years to precipitate out, it also caused the largest ever increase in the Ozone Hole in the southern mishear...EVER. Undoing/erasing ALL of the verrrry expensive global "science" efforts that shrunk it to the point of "Not an issue anymore".
Oh, by the way, they are also saying that the global ocean temps are now higher than ever in anytime of History...62.8 degrees! A human in 63degree water will be incapacitated by the cold in 2 minutes, dead in 2 hrs from Hypothermia...freezing to death.
