Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist EditionKamala’s NatSec Adviser Has Been Implicated In An Iranian Spy Ring Exposé. Philip H. Gordon, Kamala Harris‘s national security advisor, appears to have concerning ties to an Iranian influence operation that has sparked a full investigation of the Biden-Harris government’s special envoy to Iran, Robert Malley. In a letter on Wednesday, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) allege Gordan is tied to Ariane Tabatabai, a senior Defense Department official accused of participating in an Iranian influence operation. “Before joining your office, Mr. Gordon co-authored at least three opinion pieces with Ms. Tabatabai blatantly promoting the Iranian regime’s perspective and interests,” Cotton and Stefanik’s letter states. It continues: “In a March 2020 piece, Mr. Gordon and Ms. Tabatabai claimed continued sanctions on Iran would create ‘catastrophe’ in the Middle East. In another, they wrote sanctions could lead to new Iranian efforts to ‘lash out with attacks on its neighbors, and on Americans and American interests in the Middle East.'”It's vomit-inducing that the Obama wing of the Democrat/progressive movement in America is so rabidly against America that they embrace a country that has made the destruction of America a tenet of their national character. Iran has spent the last 45 years diligently killing Americans and our allies, undermining our efforts in every place where they have any influence, and supporting terrorism through its proxies in all corners of the world. That Iran is considered even on the periphery of the world of nations is a testament to the post-modern view that all cultures and societies are of equal value and importance. In a more sane world, Iran would have been bombed into the stone age for its support of terrorism, and its Mad Mullah rulers killed or imprisoned. In fact, the people of Iran just needed a bit of support, and they would have done the job themselves, but that Democrat/progressive love of murder and mayhem protected the Mullahs at the expense of thousands of Iranian lives. The world is left with tiny Israel to do the work that the West has refused to do. Hopefully the current administration is distracted enough to put Israel on the back burner while it works to subvert the will of the American people in the upcoming election. If Trump wins, then Israel once again will be the tip of the spear in the West's fight against totalitarian Islam. If Trump loses, the West and Israel will face existential issues in the coming four years, with the real prospect of atomic devices in the hands of a psychotic totalitarian regime hellbent on the destruction of Israel and the West. I know for whom I will vote. [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I kid of course Posted by: Don Black ====== There is a serious non zero chance of a nuclear exchange between minor players. Nearly happened in the 90's between India and Pakistan. "That Iran is considered even on the periphery of the world of nations is a testament to the post-modern view that all cultures and societies are of equal value and importance."
Oh, I think it's much simpler than that. It comes down to one word: money. Iran is an oil-rich country with tons and tons of money. Something like 15-20% of the world's oil comes from there. They have the money to buy power and influence, and the aggression to do it. No Western nation -- most of whom are completely dependent on middle-east oil -- is gonna take a firm stand against their Oil sugar daddy. There is a serious non zero chance of a nuclear exchange between minor players. Nearly happened in the 90's between India and Pakistan.
An unstable Iran getting the bomb will make things worse in the Middle East as the Saudis apparently have an agreement after financing the Pakistanis that their nukes would be available in an emergency (cough Iran). Then you have the Israelis with a substantial nuke force and more than one way to deliver them. Posted by: whig at August 01, 2024 11:09 AM (qdbNv) == I think the Israeli's are doing everything in their power to delay that event, but at some point I would assume all the money we just shoveled over to Iran would overwhelm their efforts. Iran sort-of pulled its own way as a Shiite alternative between the Ottomans and Mughals. But yes, even under "side-Islam" it wasn't much more than a waystation. And then there is the issue of how Islamic were the Ottomans and Mughals; not very, until the 1700s, arguably. What Islam absolutely did was to drag Iran into a two century dark age after the initial invasion. Posted by: 1iq50 at August 01, 2024 11:23 AM (1iq50) 101

Posted by: Black JEM Iran probably has enough enriched uranium from the last report to build a bomb or several fairly quickly. Then it is the delivery system that is the issue--Iran is stuck with missiles or the less safe sneak attack attempt (trucks, ships, etc. as the carrier). In part, I think that Israeli assassinations also indicate to the mullahs that their innermost secrets are penetrated which makes the sneak attack scenario perilous as to be identified and stopped inviting retaliation. Iran also has two achilles heels--Kharg Island could be bombed into oblivion and the other is the Abadan refinery. Take out the refinery and Iran's economy shuts down until repaired. The second has less international risk as the oil would still flow to places like China, Japan, India, etc. Posted by: whig at August 01, 2024 11:26 AM (qdbNv) 111

DiF assessment of the state of the race:
Leaked polls from before the switch showed that all replacements for Biden did better, but Harris was worst of the lot. They expected no better than 240 EV from her. Whitmer they think could have won. But they are stuck and going to try. Gaslighting is what is happening now with the media and polling on board. Two reasons for this, they hope that repetition will make her viable. Also if they can get close then cheating looks less obvious. They don't care if we know they cheat, they want it close enough that nothing is done about it. Real polling shoes Trump up 1 or 2, but fundamentals still favor him. He is now net popular and still wins all issues by a lot. Real polls are getting a response bias that is tilting them Dem, so Trump +1 is really worst case scenario. Trump +1 is still a 290+ EV win. However, don't get too hopeful. Even with an election win, Deep State won't willingly give up power. Plenty of options to keep him out of office including killing him. We know now they will do that. Harris remains a terrible campaigner. She is reversing positions, refuses to do a press conference, and won't take a position on any issues. From the Guardian
The Paris Olympics opening ceremony was a stunning spectacle for global audiences, projecting an image of a proudly inclusive and festive France – even if the awkward truth is that, just a few weeks earlier, our country was on the verge of putting a racist far-right party into government. The ceremony’s various tableaux were presented as a triumphant display of our different cultures performed by artists of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and genders, and fuelled by references to historical struggles against oppression. But this unifying narrative introduced an Olympic and Paralympic Games that in reality are not all that inclusive. A few days before the ceremony, Sounkamba Sylla, a French Muslim relay runner, was told that she would be banned from the event if she wore her headscarf. A compromise was finally found: she was allowed to wear a cap for the parade on the Seine – but her situation echoes a larger exclusion. France is the only Olympic participating country in the world to prohibit its female athletes from wearing hijabs. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy, Weird Dude at August 01, 2024 11:44 AM (d9LQi) 193

According to an investigation by a collective named Le revers de la médaille (The other side of the coin), 12,545 people (including 3,434 minors) were evicted – some of them forcibly – across the Paris region between April 2023 and May 2024, which is a 38.5% increase on the 2021-22 period (twice as many as last year, and almost three times more than in 2021-22 for the minors). The group alleges that on top of evictions, “harassment” of communities living near the sites hosting Olympic events has been widespread.
Tightening security has become the pretext for a “high level of violence and abuse” by the police against sex workers and victims of human trafficking, particularly those whose administrative status in France may be precarious. According to Mediapart, the violence takes various forms: “The presence of police dogs, insults, chases through the undergrowth, forced removals from trucks and refusal to allow women to put their clothes back on.” Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy, Weird Dude at August 01, 2024 11:47 AM (d9LQi) 212

I believe Trump will win, but I also know how easily a close election can swing one way or the other.
You can look at the map of the 1968 election and think "Nixon won huge" but in fact, a handful of very close wins in a few key states is what made it happen. Granted, he won all of those states that were close, but with just a few swings in the other direction, he ends up losing. We all know what a few cities in a few states did in 2020. Trump has more advantages working for him than he ever did in 2016 and 2020. In 2016 he was an unknown wildcard and that scares people. In 2020 people were exhausted from the relentless media blitz against him (and Covid). In both elections, his favorability ratings were in the basement. Now? He's almost "favorable." That's remarkable. I chalk it up to the past four years being so miserable, people being angry at being told by the media that things are good when everyone knows things suck, and Trump becoming a genuinely entrenched political force. Trump is leading in the polls. He never did that in 2016 or 2020. Posted by: Shenanigans at August 01, 2024 11:58 AM (pZ0Mr) 294

Canadian Triathlete exits the Seine River, immediately vomits.
The French government has spent €1.4 billion (£1.18 billion) trying to transform the Seine into a waterway that wouldn't make athletes sick. But despite their efforts, the event had to be postponed on Tuesday. World Triathlon said in a statement: "Following a meeting on water quality held on 30 July at 3.30am attended by Paris 2024, representatives of World Triathlon and their Technical and Medical Delegates, the International Olympic Committee, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Prefecture of the Île-de-France Region involved in carrying out water quality tests, decision has been made to postpone the men’s triathlon event which was due to be held on 30 July at 8am." The event went ahead on Wednesday morning, but unfortunately, one athlete has become unwell shortly after finishing. One athlete even said he had resorted to not washing his hands in order to build up his immunity ahead of the event. "In preparation for this race, I knew there was going to be some E.coli exposure. So I’ve been trying to increase my E.coli threshold by exposing myself to a bit of E.coli in day-to-day life," said USA's Seth Rider. You can look at the map of the 1968 election and think "Nixon won huge" but in fact, a handful of very close wins in a few key states is what made it happen. Granted, he won all of those states that were close, but with just a few swings in the other direction, he ends up losing.

As I explained to her last night - it does not. To not respond - to not mock these charges, these immature ideas of society - is just to confirm their truthfulness to a mass-media consumption audience. At least suggest there is an alternative definition of who we are as a nation - do not concede the stage to race-baiters and liars because you somehow think that by appeasing them thru silence you will somehow be left alone and can stay away from these shriekers. Posted by: Kindltot Bit of an overstatement. The truth is that Hamilton were a pure meritocrat in that he worked much harder, longer, and in several different arenas such as a damn good trial lawyer, an excellent aide de camp, apparently a brave soldier in the Yorktown campaign, a politician par excellence (outflanking a hostile Clinton at the NY ratifying convention), and an extremely competent Secretary of Treasury. Madison was a theorist and sometimes politician that worked better under someone else than he did as head honcho. Jefferson knew when not to believe his own bullshit--Madison did not. Madison also his ass handed to him when he tried to command the militia himself to defend DC as prezzie. Brave but incompetent. But, Hamilton thought that involving people of property would ensure the success of the new republic far better than relying on the crowds of relatively ignorant and could point to the state of Rhode Island as an example of 'true democracy'. Fedgov won't get a say in it as the lockdowns were a state imposed matter, not federal. Posted by: whig at August 01, 2024 12:28 PM (qdbNv) 369
"dogs must be mastered to get use out of them" is the theory of dominance and repression.
It is one of the basis of current progressive thinking. Dogs rarely get a vote. Posted by: Archimedes at August 01, 2024 12:29 PM (xCA6C) 370
I guess someone higher up told them get out of the poll business after that.
Posted by: Divide by Zero Change in ownership and profitability is simply not there to do that very expensive polling development. But, campaigns are doing that I guarantee you. Follow where they go as a clue to what states are in play. Posted by: whig at August 01, 2024 12:30 PM (qdbNv) 371
He had a consistent political philosophy that said people were incurably corrupt, and a government needed to acknowledge that fact and function on that basis, but by clever structuring, it could be made to work for the benefit of the people, who were largely ignorant and lazy. It's sort of an Adam Smith Invisible Hand argument. I think it has a lot going for it as a philosophy.
Posted by: Archimedes ---------- Anyone that saw democracy in the raw after the Revolution ended but before the US Constitution came was going to be disillusioned. Even John Adams himself dropped the revolutionary belief of the morality of the crowd. Read his later Defense of the Constitutions of the United States and it is a pretty sober analysis of government after Adams was sadder and wiser in practical governance. Israel aside, that the Democrats ally themselves with the worlds largest terror state, mass-killers of Americans at every opportunity ever since the Democrat Party first put the Mullahs in power, is, by itself, objective proof of treason.

War with Iran is a terrible idea. Iran is about twice the size of Iraq, with mountainous terrain and a higher population. It has had decades to invest in its defense and has. Where Iraq circa 2003 had been weakened by the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980's, Desert Storm in the early 90's, and sanctions well into the aughts, the Iranians have had that same period of time investing in air defense. The waters surrounding Iran are very narrow, so Ukrainian style droning can seriously endanger our ships that enter the Persian Gulf.
The population hates the regime? Great. They hated Saddam too in Iraq, but that didn't stop the population from potshoting our troops over decades bleeding us of personal and billions of dollars. You're also ignoring that the mullahs were unpopular in 1980 too, but Saddam's invasion rallied the population to support the government, just as a hot war with us or Israel will do again. Finally, there us no consideration being given to how this war could escalate. Turkey is making comments on intervening on Palestinians behalf and Russia/China would love to see us bogged down in the sandbox again. But hey, Israel first, right?
