THE MORNING RANT: Is Ford Starting to Miss the Thousands of ICE Engineers it Sacked to Save Money for its EV Debacle?

Ford Logo.jpg

It’s been just three days since I last wrote about the destructive mismanagement at Ford Motor Company, so I promise to give it a rest for a little while after today. But since I wrote and uploaded my EV roundup last week, there has been a cascade of awful news for Ford and its EV-loving CEO, Jim Farley.

Ford’s Q2 2024 financial results were just released, revealing a massive decrease in earnings, including a 6-month year-to-date loss on its electric vehicle debacle of $2.5 billion – this after Ford lost $4.7 billion on EVs in 2023. Ford’s stock price is in free fall, plunging 20% last week alone. Wall Street analysts were blindsided by the depth of Ford’s financial catastrophe.

Perhaps most telling is that warranty claims on Ford’s legacy gasoline-powered vehicles have spiraled out of control. This is not by accident. Mr. Farley deliberately sabotaged the legacy ICE (internal combustion engine) business a few years ago by gutting the engineering and design staff that had successfully made the F150 America’s most popular vehicle, as I’ll re-visit in just a moment. But first, here are some of the stories that came out late last week.

“Ford shares fall as car repair costs weigh on profits; Company misses earnings expectations following unexpected surge in need to fix faulty vehicles” [Financial Times – 7/24/2024]

Ford shares fell sharply late on Wednesday after the carmaker reported second-quarter earnings far below analysts’ expectations, citing an unexpected spike in costs for fixing faulty cars under warranty.

“Ford keeps having to repair customers’ new cars and trucks. Its profit is plunging and its stock tumbled” [CNN – 7/24/2024]

Shares of Ford fell more than 11% in after-hours trading Wednesday after the automaker reported much weaker than expected earnings. The company said it was compelled to set aside more money to cover the cost of repairing customers’ vehicles.

The company’s adjusted net income fell $1 billion to $1.9 billion, or 47 cents a share. That badly missed analysts’ forecasts of earnings per share of 68 cents a share.

Aside from the surging warranty costs related to Ford’s neglected ICE products, the EV losses continue to worsen…

”Ford misses Q2 earnings by a wide margin as EV losses reach $2.5 billion in 2024” [Electrek – 7/24/2024]

Ford’s model e unit lost another $1.1 billion in the second quarter. Ford Model e revenue fell to $1.3 billion, while volume was down 23% in Q2. Ford’s EV losses reached $2.5 billion through the first half of 2024. The higher losses are due to lower volume and industry-wide pricing pressure.

Ford successfully “sold” a record number of EVs in Q1 of 2024, but at a tremendous loss, due to fire-sale pricing in order to reduce its glut of unsold EVs. But sales plummeted again in Q2, with EV revenue falling off a cliff.

Over the past several years, Jim Farley and his band of merry destructors at Ford have sought to fund their EV misadventure by slashing the payroll of Ford’s profitable ICE division. In a manner that the cost-cutters at Boeing would recognize, Farley eliminated engineers who had critical roles in the quality of Ford’s popular gasoline-powered vehicles:

“Ford to Fund Its EV Efforts in Part by Laying Off 8,000 Workers: The cuts seem to be part of a plan, announced earlier in the year by Ford CEO Jim Farley, to cut $3 billion in operational costs from business operations related to internal-combustion products” [Car & Driver – 7/21/2022]

Up to 8,000 Ford employees could be hit by job cuts, according to a Wednesday report from Bloomberg. The move could be part of a plan to cut $3 billion in operational costs from the company's gasoline-powered business operations in order to boost profit and invest more into Ford's electric-vehicle endeavors.

It wasn’t just a one-time purge in 2022. Farley made it clear how contemptuous he was toward engineers whose skill set was for ICE vehicles.

“Ford Employs 25 Percent More Engineers Than Needed: Farley” [Ford Authority – 02/06/2023]

Mere days after Farley expressed frustration with Ford’s disappointing 2022 financial performance – which was aided by the automaker’s overstaffing issue – the executive has noted that the company employs 25 percent more engineers than it needs...

As the EV debacle worsened, Ford continued to cut deeper into its brain trust of legacy ICE employees, with another wave of engineers let go in 2023.

“Ford targets US and Canadian engineers in latest wave of layoffs” [The Verge – 6/27/2023]

A new wave of layoffs primarily targeting Ford Motor employees in engineering roles in the US and Canada are expected to take place this week as part of the company’s latest cost-cutting efforts. Leaders of the teams impacted by the job cuts received confirmation on Monday,

Jim Farley’s commitment to electric vehicles, and his efforts to sabotage Ford’s successful line of gasoline-powered vehicles, can be likened to an overseas explorer of centuries past who scuttles his ship upon reaching foreign shores. By destroying the vessel that brought his crew to this place, he is making the point that Ford cannot return to where it came from. It must succeed in its new journey as an EV company, or it will be allowed to fail.

Unfortunately, Ford will not succeed as an EV company. By allowing Farley to continue down this path, Ford’s board of directors is assenting to the failure of this once great company. It’s not too late to save Ford, but it cannot be saved with a CEO who is willing to destroy the company rather than retreat from a colossal mistake.

10 My first few cars were Fords, a maverick sedan, a vintage Mercury park Lane 4-door, and an Escort 4-door. I used to say, "I like Fords; I understand their design philosophy."

Then I moved on, and up, to Oldsmobiles, Mercedes, BMW, and Buick. Since Ford no longer makes vehicles I'd be interested in, well, so long, Blue Oval.

Lincoln is still going (?), but the only dealer is thirty miles or more away from me. And I suspect they only offer Matthew McConaghey SUV specials, no cars.

Cortes burned his ships to motivate his men (supposedly, but others argue the ships were simply worn out), but had the advantage that he had landed on a fertile shore, with many tribes willing to help him overthrow the Aztecs. Even so, it was a lunatic idea. He got lucky.

Farley is trying to replicate Cortes, but instead of Mexico, he landed on the side of an active Antarctic volcano.

Quality declines across the board as third world assemblers simply do not give much of a care about quality of what they make. I am even dubious of brand new 'name brand' repair parts nowadays as so many are defective right out of the box to fix older vehicles.

Boeing shows what happens when quality of components deteriorate--bad things happen.

32 I know we all have opinions on vehicles. Maybe it was just bad luck. I'll preface my remarks by saying I take very good care of my vehicles. Maintenance and care from the time I get them. I've had nothing but problems with the various Fords that I've owned over the years. Out of 4 that I've owned. I've had to replace an engine at 82,000 miles. And two transmissions under 100K. The other was not as major but still in the shop a lot. the 4th is an F150 that's a 2007. It runs good etc. Even though I wash the vehicle often, the frame is shot. I've NEVER had that with any other vehicle, even some of the old pieces of shit I've owned, the frame at least was still good. Sorry Ford, I'm out.

43 Here's one for you, Buck. Edmunds:

https://tinyurl.com/28wco2d9

"More than half of Teslas traded in at dealerships so far in 2024 were traded in for a gas vehicle. According to Edmunds data, from January to July of 2024, 51% of used Teslas were traded for gas, and 32% were traded for an EV. If you factor in hybrids, that first number grows to 57%."

Here's the funniest part of the article, though. They want you to understand how that's a great thing:

"But the big news is that more and more people are opting to trade their Teslas for an EV from a legacy automaker."

See, it's GOOD that not even 1/3rd of the owners of the best, most supported, most supercool, most stylish, most etc etc decide to stick with an electric vehicle. Or something.

They're solid, dependable vehicles that I've had to put very little work into over the years.

All were bought used, had reasonably low mileage and my cost of ownership very low.

The only major items were a timing belt in one (wear item) and a rocker arm in another (incredibly rare issue).

Other than that, they start every day, get me to and fro and make me and my family pretty happy.

As Attorney General, Senator Harris instructed her entire staff to stand every morning as she entered the office and say, “Good Morning General.”

Never once during the month-long internship did Harris introduce herself to our son (as he was only in an office with 20 paid employees) and staff was too intimidated by her to introduce him. The only acknowledgment was a form letter of “thanks” signed by Harris given to him on his last day of service.

Gregory was also given instructions to never address Harris nor look her in the eye as that privilege was only allowed to senior staff members.

EPA mandated fuel efficiency standards means every single car manufacturer has to find a way to cut weight.

It's getting to the point the EPA is pretty much asking car companies to violate the laws of physics in order to meet their insane goals.

Removing weight and shaving every single corner possible is going to create reliability issues. For instance, the shut down at the stop light to save fuel nonsense. How is that not hard on systems? The short term gain is going to be more than offset by long term maintenance problems.

117 ...the overwhelming majority of Americans are supposed to accept a way of life that will be somewhere between the European standard and that prevailing in the Third World.

Globalism is an era when the elites no longer feel restrained by national identity and are thus freer to enrich themselves at their host society's expense, mainly by outsourcing jobs to low-wage countries and by insourcing low-wage labor for jobs that cannot be relocated, such as those in construction and services. That's globalism in a nutshell. This two-way movement redistributes wealth from owners of labor to owners of capital. Businesses get not only a cheaper workforce but also weaker labor and environmental standards. To stay competitive, workers in high-wage countries have to accept lower pay and a return to working conditions of another age. The top 10% are thus pulling farther and farther ahead of everyone else throughout the developed world. They're getting richer ... not by making a better product but by making the same product with cheaper and less troublesome inputs of labor. This is not a win-win situation, and the potential for revolutionary unrest is high.

140 Just another couple of data points related to driving and/or Ford:

Drunk Driving Detection technology mandated in the USA by 2026 (Infrastructure bill of 2021.) That's sure to raise the cost per vehicle, and false positives will be considered simply an "inconvenience" to the vehicle owner. I can think of many cases where it would be a whole lot more than an inconvenience to not be able to drive your vehicle.

Also, Ford Motor Company has filed a patent application # 20240239352, "SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR DETECTING SPEEDING VIOLATIONS" where one vehicle would detect the speed and identifying features of another speeding vehicle on the road and would then electronically tattle to authorities.

Pretty much. They might have extended the life of turbos using some better materials but as a rule of thumb, they go out from 60k to 100k on cars. At best, you replace the turbo, at worst-if you keep driving it, parts from the dead turbo get sucked into the main engine and it be dead.

You would have to ask AOP his opinion on turbos and diesels.

So from this headline we may be able to gather two things. One they likely used "people" in place of "children". And in that case we can infer it's a known religion of pieces attack.

If it really is just adults that were victims of an attack that "targeted a children's class" then I guess it's hard to assume anything yet.

Absolutely zero issues with the previous year V8's, but the new twin turbo V6's are a mess.

You can love it but turbos have a lifespan less than that of motors. Most of the plain jane engines built in the late nineties or early 00's without geegaws can last about 200k plus, even up to 300-400k with moderate maintenance.

The problem with turbos is that when they fail, there is a non zero chance it kills the engine via the engine intaking debris from the dead turbo.

And there is no way to predict exactly when they will fail as that requires disassembly and costly labor to do it. At that point, better to stick a new one on it as the labor costs is roughly the same.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at July 29, 2024 11:52 AM (d9LQi)

221 So, I work for Ford, but this is my own private opinion. Our management took the eye off of quality and took the cost reduction by dumping large swaths of engineers. Not just for ICE, but across the board in many cases.
Some engineering has been outsourced to groups in Mexico, Brazil and Europe.

We let lots of experienced engineers go. We've hired lots of software and AI people to manage those that are left, often for less because they work in India or Mexico. Those people are less helpful because they know nothing about the design of the vehicle, they are just checking that you uploaded a document with the right header.

Our quality wouldn't have dropped had Farly and the others continued to focus on it and demand things get fixed. We have had an uptick in semi-conductor shortages still, but in the majority of cases our management has let stuff slide that they would not have before, because it costs money. There is a cost to delay builds until parts are good, to hold stock back for reworks. Instead they rush production and then try to fix stuff after.

Farly and our upper management all believe in a future where no one owns cars, it will all be carshare services.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at July 29, 2024 11:53 AM (d9LQi)

224 You can love it but turbos have a lifespan less than that of motors.

Posted by: whig at July 29, 2024 11:46 AM (qdbNv)

If it has a turbocharger on it, it will die. If it does, don't drive the engine until you get it fixed as the risk for destroying the entire engine escalates. The one that I blew back in the day, I knew it immediately from the trail of smoke. Modern synthetic oils don't do that as much.

But mebbe that doesn't matter to you depending on other key expensive components going out like transmissions, etc.

Just figure failure into expected maintenance costs as simply from the odds, making 200k with an intact turbocharger is unlikely.

When the crash comes, people will because they will not be able to finance it and rollover their previous loans. We are at the end of financialization essentially because vehicles are reaching the limit as far as people's ability to pay for them and finance them.

One of the lessons from Argentina (or even Cuba really) is that cars that are easy to work on still get bought. Those that are tech nightmares with expensive parts sit and rust.

Posted by: whig at July 29, 2024 12:05 PM (qdbNv)

281 I dont care so much about the subsidies (although bad) as I do that we HAVE TO put corn syrup in all our gasoline. It ruins engines if it sits there, especially small engines like chain saws, lawnmowers, etc.

I'm almost fine with just letting the Dems win the state to just get rid of it.

Ethanol disintegrates plastics. Especially carburetors of small engines like lawnmowers, generators, atv's, etc.

I don't think they put turbochargers on the big V8s.
Maybe on their Harley Davidson but it's not rated to work and people that can afford it don't GAS anyway.

285 Yes. That was the 6.2 diesel. It's by any objective measure - a terrible engine. My 6.5 is the "evolution" of that. My engine (P400) is about the best mechanical embodiment of "Lipstick on a Pig" as you can get.
Posted by: Defenestratus at July 29, 2024 11:17 AM (dIg3g)

The "dieselized" small block was the 5.7 Diesel used in Oldsmobiles, and maybe some pickups. Made from a 350 Olds block. The 6.2 and its successor the 6.5 turbo were designed from the ground up as Diesel engines. I have had both. The "electronic" injection pump in the 6.5 was troublesome. More power...when it worked right.

288 Just figure failure into expected maintenance costs as simply from the odds, making 200k with an intact turbocharger is unlikely.

Posted by: whig
___

It's not just the turbo that goes out, turbo engines make a lot more heat. Whole engine itself won't last as long. Oil changes have to be more frequent with higher quality oil. All the plastic shit under the hood also doesnt last as long because its so much hotter.

Consumer spends like $8k to $12k+ more on an engine for it to get like 1-2mpgs better fuel economy and save like $3 a week on fuel. Math doesnt add up.

And you also often times have to use the highest octane (super unleaded) on a turbo car.

What will fail early is the starter solenoid, that big magnetic switch that connects the starter motor directly to the battery upon receiving a command from the ECM (or from the starter button). Every make&break of those fat copper contacts causes a little erosion of them.

299 Back to the "was the last supper also the Passover celebration? question. No, it was not, JC WAS the Passover lamb. JC was sacrificed at the correct time.

From a scholar on this subject. ... preparation for Passover was not the same as keeping the Passover.

"They intended to keep the Passover, but Judas betrayed Jesus Monday night and he was arrested and tortured all day and night Tuesday and the crucified on Wednesday. The Disciples probably did not even have a Passover meal that year because they were at the crucifixion."

Had the princes of this world known (the Great Mystery of the one body), they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. Anyway, I know it is established in tradition the other way, but JC as our Passover, once and for all, seems clearer this way.

300 Along that line, strip out all the extraneous crap, electronics, touch screens etc - roll up windows, V8, cruise, heat and a/c, just the basics + tow package. Call it Ford 150 Heavy (it's the butch model) And sell it cheaper than Dodge or Chevy.
Put it in the price range of the Tacoma and sell a million.
Posted by: Braenyard at July 29, 2024 11:59 AM (6ZHNK)

No, you need the power windows and door locks because you can't reach across the cabin to roll the other window down. You need heat and A/C, but give them both manual controls instead of troublesome vacuum actuators. And cruise is nice to have, but not lane-keeping or collision avoidance crap. And just leave a 1.5DIN hole in the dash, and pre-wire the cab for 4 speakers, but let the customer install his own radio of choice.

TYIA.

117 overwhelming majority of Americans are supposed to accept a way of life that will be somewhere between the European standard and that prevailing in the Third World.

This is not a win-win
