I'll be watching the non-studio version of swimming, gymnastics, diving, and some track on Peacock in the mornings...you can find the singular live sport broadcasts there vs the "NBC channel stream of stories and commentary and BS" that will be broadcast, especially tape delayed in the evening...

47 Thanks, WeirdDave.

When you look into Mozart, he's really a funny guy. His operas, the popular 'show' of the day, with cheap seats for the hoi polloi at the theater, poked fun at the very peerage who were his patrons. The audience would roar in laughter at the digs to the elite 'sitting in the front row'.

The other thing: He wropte every piece of music once, for all instruments, even symphonies. He heard every note of every instrument in his head and wrote those notes down one time, no crossouts/corrections. Man was a sheer autistic genius.

165 I did a bit of digging and found some info about how and why the decision to dump Biden for Harris occurred.

In the weeks after the debate the bottom dropped out of Biden polling. The numbers were so bad that no strategy could recover to get him close enough to cheat.

Personal conspiracy theory - this triggered plan A, kill Trump, when that failed move to plan B

This same polling showed that while she was still losing, there was still a narrow path for Harris. That she polled slightly better in GA and AZ, while losing WI and MI. So while it is still drawing an inside straight, winning GA, AZ, and PA would get her over 270. If they caught a break along with the normal structural advantages they have, she could get to 274 by the skin of her teeth.

I still don't buy it, but now I understand the logic. Ultimately this is a game of avoiding a down ballot landslide, and maybe getting lucky.

I sm now very skeptical of those Fox polls.

181 Mein Gott....

I deemed myself inured to the dark and the grotesque, yet this evening's spectacle robbed me of that comforting illusion. An ancient sporting spectacle as much religion as athletic endeavor saw its comeuppance with the French. How could I not have known that, given the chance, France would do what it always does best: taking an event of renown and rendering it perverse and unwatchable by any decent mortal. Their polymorphous perversity, their she-males, their tableau of beheaded maidens from the demimonde warbling eldritch tunes with an inanity that insulted as much as it exhausted and annoyed.

The Opening Ceremonies were too kinky and macabre for me, and I am German, for Gott's sake. I have watched them for you so that you need not do so. Skip that part on the DVR, Even the now-late Klaus Kinski, whose departure from this world had nothing to do with me, whatever you may have heard, even that twee homunculus I would protect against its viewing. Klaus, I would say, avert your eyes, like a father I will shield you. No, Klaus, no hugging, I am not French. Bismarck was right, I realize that now. I forget the whole context of Harris" " I was that little girl" speech, but obviously the picture from her campaign is supposed to remind one of the little girl being escorted to school under desegregation .
I consider this, the historical version of " Stolen valor". She isn't that little girl. She'd be too young and that woman had a real name which isn't Kamala Harris. In addition, she grew up in Canada not in the US. I don't think her campaign team is very smart.

Also, I understand the implication of Harris as an adult but in that picture she looks like she's praying. Maybe Harris is religious but I think it's more likely her god is the strange one of progressive politics

In her case, the silhouette should have shown her reaching for a man's fly, not in a pose that could be mistaken for prayer.

Although, putting her in the pose of an Aztec priest about to cut out the sacrifice's heart, with dagger raised, would also be appropriate, considering her devotion to abortion.

222 America's favorite ragamuffin, Tom Cruise, called me during the opening ceremony. I had appeared in his Jack Reacher film, where I played The Zek, a veteran of the brutal Soviet labor camps. In that role, I used the threat of violence to force a man to eat his fingers. It was not a challenge, as I had forced Kinski to do so on location for Fitzcarraldo during a monsoon, while we wagered on the outcome. Ah, the happy days of one's youth.

Tom was troubled - sitting stark upright in his high chair, he had viewed the Olympic opening, and had reached a crisis of faith. Not even his operating Thetan levels could spare him from the visual and aural assault of the Frog spawn. Did you see it, Werner, he asked. Ja, Tom, I have seen it and it cannot be unseen - this I told him. L. Ron Hubbard's arsenal had not prepared him for this, and there was much weak mewling and sobbing over the line. I was moved to mercy for the tiny gamine, and murmured Forget it Tom, it's Paris town. Yet can it be forgotten? Only time will tell. Time, and am buttload of cognac, interspersed with Xanax. Do not judge me.

Of course this is touted as great news for Harris, since Biden was down 6 in the same poll.

Posted by: mikeski

With no interest in rap music, it is a problem.

In English, verse is often (not always) expected to rhyme. English is unusual in this.

Other languages are about meter, and word-play, which does not always translate well to English.

You can translate verse into English rhyme and meter, while losing the word-play and even the main sense of the writer.

Most difficult job I have ever had.

Federico Garcia Lorca had been playing with bringing the English style foot into Spanish poetry, which traditionally was a syllabic type poetry meter. IIRC my Spanish lit prof described it as a way to break from what was becoming to be considered Spain's obsolete traditions that were dragging it down under centuries of past decisions. I can't remember if he was considered one of the "generation of '98" writers or one of the second wave of the movement.

Thank you Miklos, I know we disagree on economics, but it is nice to have a reason to remember those courses in Spanish Lit.

They will need a lot more of it, and the logistics will be hard. Nationally we are looking at a 12M vote shift to Trump if the CNN poll is correct.

If Rasmussen is correct, it is an 18M vote shift.

They clearly didn't think they could do it, hence the murder attempt and a coup in 2 weeks.

2000 mules got them to the point they could turn the election in a couple hours using a hidden suitcase.

But I'm usually wrong and they are not stupid. Perhaps they can come up with a new way to cheat the millions of ballots they need.

311 Today was a day for fixing Things That Broke. Like the clothesline, which I actually fixed yesterday, but used for the first time today since fixing it.

And I fixed a flat tire on the Dixon mower. Well the tire that was flat had reached end of life. Rips in the sidewalls, exposing the tube. One such rip had allowed a patch to peel off the tube, letting it go flat. Well that tire had to go. Removed it, found a pair of old mower wheels in the barn; tires one size bigger. Patched the tube, mounted one of the "new" tires, and aired it up. Swapped out the other tire, since tire diameters have to match. "Damn!" The patched tube went flat again. Busted the tire off the rim one one side, dragged out the tube, peeled off the failed patch, did it again. Seems to be holding now. Drove mower into barn.

326 Miklos, I've been noticing for a few weeks that Whitmer in particular politically benefits the most of Harris loses. Shapiro also to a lesser degree, though he is in his first term.

Both are popular in their states, and would do well in 2028.

But that goes away if Harris wins. Then they need to wait until 2032 with Whitmer being out of sight for 6 years.

If Whitmer doesn't deliver MI then Harris needs to make up 16 EVs out of GA, AZ, and NV where she is well behind. GA could do it, but she would still need WI and PA.

359 When I was a kid and before all the interstates and such, when we'd go visit my Mom's Mom in Bland County, VA, up in Appalachia, we'd go by the Bland County Correctional Farm; the inmates were people sentenced to less than a year. Cows, pigs, chickens, veggies. They grew their own food, plus food for other prisons. Stopped sometime late '60s-early '70s. ACLU lawsuit or something. Prison farms BAD! MODERN SLAVERY!
Posted by: RickZ at July 27, 2024 12:46

We had the same thing here in N IL, for years the Dixon State School farmed some ground, supported the place and benefited the inmates (It evolved from an epileptic colony into a school for the mentally infirm).

The farm work really benefited many and was a good idea too easily discarded.

367 Mozart also wrote a song, mostly to amuse his friends, that can be translated as 'Kiss My Ass' which, well, it tells the people listening what to do. He and his buddies would get drunk, play the tune on the piano, sing the lyrics, and probably offend everyone in earshot.

That wasn't his only offensive, swear-filled song or example of being a dick to a singer, and in fact he combined both into one song another time. There was a tenor with a really strong accent that he screwed with by making Latin that, when spoken in that accent, sounded kind of like German swearing. So it looked perfectly fine up until he started singing....

444 And didja practice cypherin' on the backside of a shovel, by firelight, with a piece o' charcoal?

We were lucky to get a chunk of charcoal, depending on how the lit farts went.

Dry farts...wet farts....we were poor, and happy to have anything at all.

445 Speaking of debates: "The Lincoln newspapers [those papers that formally supported Lincoln] wasted no time in condemning Douglas for not agreeing to the debates and branded him a coward. Political debates were part of the Prairie tradition and any serious political candidate was expected to put on a fine performance."

Coward is such a quaint word. I am glad we have moved on from it.

The distinction between parody and satire is a thing in copyright law. Lawyers argue the difference. It's satire, not it's a parody.

Yes, basically

Parody is intended to be recognizable, based on some existing work.

Satire is about things, habits, styles, and people.

You can sue or get sued either way.

459 Speaking of polkas. It is nice to see them treated seriously and not satirized or parodied for a once.

Takes a couple of minutes for 4 clocks, since I have to get them synced to the second. Which is OCD....

>> and how would you know?

I don't. I go by what the NIST says, and they could be lying.

462 Miklos, I've been noticing for a few weeks that Whitmer in particular politically benefits the most of Harris loses.

Her map is very very hard.

I thought the same thing - especially for Shapiro. If he delivered a mostly honest election in PA and Trump won, he gets the shot at Vance in 2028, assuming the dems haven't snuck some nukes to Hamas by then.
