Fiorentino Pieta.jpg

Pietà
Giovanni Battista di Jacopo (Rosso Fiorentino)

The Pietà is a classic subject of Renaissance art, dominated by Michelangelo's glorious sculpture. Many examples have a static feel about them...more portrait than exposition of Mary's sorrow.

I found Fiorentino's Pietà to be almost painful to look at, and of course that is exactly the emotion one expects, but rarely gets.

37 Maybe I'm missing the metaphor, but the symbolism of the red seems oddly reversed. 62 Did Florence the redhead paint this before or after she started working at Mel's Diner?

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at July 26, 2024 09:55 AM (v6JzV)

63 ||Rosso Fiorentino after Florence, worked in Rome, from which he had to flee, due to Sacco di Roma in 1527 by the Spanish Lanzichenecchi of Charles V, to take refuge in Venice.

This escape marked a turning point in the maturation of the artist, in whose works a darker theme entered, such as in "Lamento o Pietà" (1528, Sansepolcro) and "Transfiguration" (1528-1530,Cathedral of Città di Castello).

In 1530 Francesco I called him to France, as an official painter, to renew the Chà ¢ teau de Fontainebleau; here Rosso Fiorentino worked with other Italians such as Francesco Primaticcio (1505-1570), forming the Fontainebleau school which had a great influence on French painting of the time.

The Pomona Pavilion (1532-1535) and the Gallery of Francis I (1534-1537) decorated with Francesco Primaticcio for the Royal Palace of Fontainebleau, with a more contained and elegant mannerism, in line with the taste of the French court.

Giovanni Battista of Jacopo, Rosso Fiorentino died in Fontainebleau in 1540, leaving France's ten-year work Fontainebleau school, from which the Italian Mannerist style spread to Northern Europe.||

65 Where is this painting housed? I was in Florence in 1994 right the Uffizi gallery was bombed by the mafia. I was on a tour and didn’t keep particular notes. I do know if you ever go to Italy the Vatican museums are legitimately incredible. Everyone talks about the Sistine Chapel and for sure that is something but the Vatican museums are something beyond belief. I’ve been to a lot of museums, but that is the one seed.

The attack on the Ufizzi gallery was one of the final death blows to the Italian mafia, The entire country turned on them over that and they should have.

||Mannerism is a style in European art that emerged in the later years of the Italian High Renaissance around 1520, spreading by about 1530 and lasting until about the end of the 16th century in Italy, when the Baroque style largely replaced it. Northern Mannerism continued into the early 17th century.

Mannerism encompasses a variety of approaches influenced by, and reacting to, the harmonious ideals associated with artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Vasari, and early Michelangelo. Where High Renaissance art emphasizes proportion, balance, and ideal beauty, Mannerism exaggerates such qualities, often resulting in compositions that are asymmetrical or unnaturally elegant. Notable for its artificial (as opposed to naturalistic) qualities, this artistic style privileges compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance painting. Mannerism in literature and music is notable for its highly florid style and intellectual sophistication.

The definition of Mannerism and the phases within it continue to be a subject of debate among art historians.||

100 >86 It is interesting to see beards go in and out of fashion.

The last data I saw said women found stubble but not a full beard the most attractive thing on a guy.

Of course I remember years ago when having stubble made you look like a loser.

I began sporting a beard last November after a few days off from work. Mrs. Meta is decidedly 'meh' on the whole proposition. I think it gives me a jaunty flair, a certain je ne sais quoi, if you will. Mrs. Meta is convinced I'm delusional and may need an intervention.

Surgery worked great for 21 months, then I got Covid and afib returned immediately. It looks like I’m going into a major procedure on my heart in a couple weeks, That sucks ass a week ago it wasn’t even on my itinerary. Now this guy, I never met. What’s the do some work on my heart. The shaving will be the easiest part, though I legit have no idea what that’s about.

202 America 2100 @America_2100 14h
This is a lesson on how the media shapes our politics.

The press wanted Biden out. So they gave him the Trump treatment—burying him in an onslaught of negative news.

In a few weeks, he caved.

Now, the focus is changing once again. They've shifted back to the real enemy. (1/9)

For the brief period of time that the press was arrayed against Biden, everything seemed to suddenly come into place for Republicans. They were elated. The wind was in their sails. Victory seemed to be inevitable.

Biden was isolated—under siege. Trump had all the momentum. (2/9)

But many Republicans didn't fully realize why. Yes, Biden was a terrible candidate. Yes, Trump had just survived an attempt on his life.

But the through-line in all this was that the press was suddenly treating Trump better than they ever had before—or ever would again. (3/9)

Just to give a few quick examples: Look at this Washington Post headline. No, really. Look at it.

"Trump's emotional entrance."
"A fitting culmination."
Trump "makes his entrance."

When has the Washington Post ever written about Donald Trump this way before? (4/9)

Posted by: andycanuck (wse2C) at July 26, 2024 10:42 AM (wse2C)

203 America 2100 @America_2100 14h
"Trump's emotional appearance" (New York Times)
"Trump calls for unity" (NY Daily News)
"Trump savors convention crowd" (NBC)
"Trump faithful moved" by his entrance (BBC)

Trump's speeches are usually "dark," "angry," "filled with far-right dog whistles." But not this one. (5/9)

Obviously, it was still the media, and it was still Donald Trump. You can find plenty of negative coverage. But there was a notable softening of the tone; for once, they weren't firing on all cylinders against him.

And they were firing on all cylinders against Biden. (6/9)

In his new book, @AuronMacintyre describes how the rise of mass democracy shifted political power from the old power centers—state, church, guild, landed nobility, etc—to the institutions that shaped public opinion: Education, entertainment industry, the press, and so on. (7/9)

The past few weeks have vindicated that insight. The media and other narrative-forming institutions shape our political discourse in profound, fundamental ways. Even conservatives, despite their hostility to the media, are playing on their terms. (8/9)

The media has basically laid siege to the Biden presidency, running endless stories about his inevitable resignation

Trump obviously took for granted going in that he would have this level of hostility, but Democrats assume slavish press compliance 🧵/1

Republicans may not know it yet, but the ground has shifted under their feet. There are forces at work that are bigger and more powerful than they are—and they're always one step ahead of the GOP.

If the Right wants to win, we have to understand this—and act accordingly. (9/9)

212 Of course, we all know because this is a smart military blog that sideburns got their name from the union Army General Burnside. He had major sideburns, though they didn’t have a name for it when it started. Burnside is normally laughed at and considered a random piece of history because sideburns were named for him. I have no expert on the man far from it, but from what I have seen of him at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. He was at least a competent general. His own side treated him poorly, and while he was no Grant, he certainly wasn’t one of the worst.

229 211, Berzerker, I was diagnosed with a fib in my late 40s and the doctors never really did anything about it. So I ran into this heart doctor he thought the entire thing was absurd. They never badmouth fellow doctors, but he thought it was weird to say the least, and put me on the path to getting this ablation. I’m wearing a monitor right now for I guess two weeks then comes the CAT scan and then the procedure.

I probably been in a fib for a years and no doctor did a thing about it. Now this guy tells me forget the stroke being an a fib can damage your heart so that’s where I am. I wish the other doctors eight years ago said that, but they didn’t. Not exactly excited about the procedure because they said it would be general anesthesia this from a guy who never even broke a pinky. Oh well, I know people do it all the time, but I’ve never spent the night in the hospital and to me. I’m not so sanguine on the entire event.

I have several vintage Gillettes ranging from the Thirties to the Sixties, and two modern safety razors: a Fatip Open Comb Slant, which looks fearsome and isn't (but shaves very well), and the classic Merkur Progress Adjustable. All of them shave beautifully, but I find myself packing the Progress if I'm going on a trip.

Merkurs are good razors. (Though I have heard their blades are not that good.)

238 224, I kind of am, I would not have brought it up if I wasn’t kind of asking for other opinions. I do know because I cared for my own parents who became in invalids that you have to be your own advocate. The doctor that says I need to do this is going to do the procedure if I keep following what he says to do and it will be in a week or so. I am thinking I should ask for a second opinion because there really wasn’t a lot of discussion, he wasn’t bad mind you but for sure the discussion was short, I could barely comprehend what was going to happen. I mean, I had gone to doctors over the last eight years and none of them did crap and now this guy says I need major surgery and we have to do it now. I know I’m too young for a fib, but that’s been true for eight years so I still just keep doing my thing. Any opinions or advice is appreciated. I didn’t bring this up because I want to draw attention to myself. I brought it up because maybe someone could give me some advice.

I shave with the grain on the first pass, against on the second, and if I need a third, across the grain.

A Democrat Congresswoman Is Engaged to the Grandson of a Famous Palestinian Terrorist Behind the Munich Massacre

California Rep. Sara Jacobs holds a peculiar position on the Israel-Hamas war.

Despite her Jewish faith, Rep. Jacobs is prominently anti-Israel when it comes to the conflict. She previously called upon the United States government to withdraw arms funding for the Benjamin Netanyahu’s forces, and her remarks often focus on the impact on Palestinian civilians rather than the atrocities of the Hamas-led regime.

I didn't love the moustache either, as far as the poking me all the time - sometimes it felt like tiny electrical shocks to my top lip. But, as I said earlier, he was not "him" without it.

245 The media didn't get rid of Biden.

Biden does what he is told. As does Jill despite all the bs to the contrary.

Kamala does and will too.

This is how the Left rolls. They don't promote free thinkers, they promote puppets. Why does every media outlet sound essentially the same? Because they are the borg.

255 231, lol, good thing for sure. I was weird supposedly as a baby. I was sick though I can’t remember that I also had chickenpox twice which they say is not possible, but I did. Outside of that, I’ve never had an issue but I got a fib in my late 40s and it’s even a rare thing for people in their 80s so that sucks. I’m following with the doctors telling me to do I guess there will be an ablation procedure.,, It’s new for me for sure. I’ve been to a lot of hospitals, but it was caring for family members never for me. I won’t have any family members caring for me, but so what life till you the cards and then you played them. You actually help me because I think I’m gonna go through with it because what are the options? I will look up the doctor though, and I will look into a second opinion because I need to know what the options are, though my guess is they’re gonna say just do it.

257 I mean, I had gone to doctors over the last eight years and none of them did crap and now this guy says I need major surgery and we have to do it now. I know I’m too young for a fib, but that’s been true for eight years so I still just keep doing my thing. Any opinions or advice is appreciated. I didn’t bring this up because I want to draw attention to myself. I brought it up because maybe someone could give me some advice.

Posted by: Quint at July 26, 2024 10:54 AM (/7Asi)

Research the doctor, make sure he don't have a feather hat and a bone in his nose. My friend had afib for some years and it got bad. real bad. He barley slept for a month and was too weak to pee in the middle of the night. He had the procedure, and 2 weeks later he jumped on his harley and went to the laconia run in new hampshire. He's doing great. If...if you got a good doctor then just do it.

260 238 224, I kind of am, I would not have brought it up if I wasn’t kind of asking for other opinions. 266 248, thanks. I did change health insurance a couple times, but I was with doctors many times and they never did anything. They never even referred me to a cardiologist until now. When I met with the cardiologist, he was shocked that I was diagnosed with a fib almost 8 years ago, and he was very concerned about my heart. He really hasn’t said anything about the results, but he wants to do the procedure, I don’t know why the previous doctors never did anything about it particularly because I’m so young and this guy was pretty shocked about it so even that little thing makes me think he’ll be OK. I wish the past I wish someone would’ve done this intervention eight years ago, but they didn’t. I thought the only concern was a fib was stroke. Now I hear having it for a long period can majorly damage your heart. Oh well, we’ll see what happens. I’m gonna go through with it. I appreciate you letting me Feel good about it.

Had to have 4 sensors for the EKG. Kept falling off. Easiest was shaving all acreage north of the belly button. Once a week was sufficient. For me, better than rolling over and dying.
