I Am ONT The Great And Terrible!

Howdy boys and girls, welcome to Thursday night. Tonight's tip: It's never to late to finish the job.

Home Sweet Home

A $1 million starter home? It’s becoming the norm in these cities

In more than 200 U.S. cities, the typical starter home comes with a price tag of $1 million or more, according to a new analysis, underscoring the affordability challenge many first-time homebuyers face.

The data, compiled by real estate company Zillow, found that there were 237 cities where the typical starter home was worth $1 million or more. Five years ago, there were only 84 such cities.

The typical "starter home" was defined for the analysis as being among those in the lowest third of home values in a given region but worth at least $1 million.

I couldn't find a list of the cities, although the link does have a map showing how many cities are in each state. I'd like to know how they define “city” as well.

Extremist Islamist preacher found guilty of directing terrorist organization in UK

On Tuesday, infamous Islamic extremist preacher Anjem Choudary was found guilty of directing a terrorist organisation, membership of a proscribed organisation, and encouraging support for a terrorist organisation. The charges stemmed from the 57-year-old Pakistani-Brit's involvement in the delivery of online lectures to followers in North America which resembled Al-Muhajiroun, a banned terror group.

Among those who helped facilitate the lectures was Khaleed Hussein, a 29-year-old gas station attendant from Edmonton, Alberta. He was convicted of membership in a proscribed organisation.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the verdicts were handed down following a six-week trial at Woolwich Crown Court in east London. Choudary, who has long resided in the area, was arrested on July 23, 2023, while Hussein was taken into custody hours later upon touching down at Heathrow after flying in from Canada to meet the preacher.

So here's the question. How do we balance our constitutional rights, freedom of religion, association and speech, with actual terrorist groups, or groups openly advocating for terrorism? How do you define the line?

Lost In Space

NASA says no return date yet for astronauts and troubled Boeing capsule at space station

Already more than a month late getting back, two NASA astronauts will remain at the International Space Station until engineers finish working on problems plaguing their Boeing capsule, officials said Thursday.

Test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were supposed to visit the orbiting lab for about a week and return in mid-June, but thruster failures and helium leaks on Boeing's new Starliner capsule prompted NASA and Boeing to keep them up longer.

NASA’s commercial crew program manager Steve Stich said mission managers are not ready to announce a return date. The goal is to bring Wilmore and Williams back aboard Starliner, he added.

“We'll come home when we're ready,” Stich said.

What's the over/under on how long before they have to ask Space X to bail them out?

How Absurd!

Politico Says Vance Has ‘Weird,’ That Is, Normal, Views on Gender

The mind reels with lurid possibilities. What are Vance’s “weird views on gender”? Does he think that men can magically turn into champion female swimmers and women of the year? Does he think drag queens should be sent into primary schools to teach children the glories of the latest LGBTQWTF fantasies? Does he think parents should lose custody of their children if they don’t affirm their delusions that they belong to the opposite sex?

Nah. Politico would think all that was as normal as pink hair and nose rings. What Politico finds “weird” is that Vance is “staunchly opposed to abortion” and has even compared the left’s sacramental child sacrifice to slavery, another moral evil that once enjoyed the protection of a Supreme Court ruling. Even worse, as far as Politico is concerned, is the fact that Vance has “promoted Viktor Orban’s pro-natalist policies in Hungary, which offer paybacks to married couples that scale up along with the number of children.” Good heavens! He wants people to have more children? But what about their carbon footprint?

Personally, I don't know a lot about Vance, but the more I see the useless GOPe complain about his selection, the more I'm willing to believe that he is a good choice.

US, NATO Allies Work to 'Trump-Proof' Ukraine Support Amid Presidential Race Shake-Up

At the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado, last week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, when asked directly about "Trump-proofing," for the first time spoke to the various steps the U.S. and its allies have taken to guard against the possibility of Trump ditching commitments to Ukraine should he return to the White House.

The term "Trump-proofing" has become a common expression among pundits, academics and reporters amid the rising questions over the future of the support when a new U.S. president is sworn into office in January.

In line with his "America first" agenda, Trump has criticized the more than $53.7 billion in military aid the U.S. has sent to Ukraine, according to a tally by the State Department. His pick for vice president, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, has been more blunt.

In a podcast when he was running for the Senate seat in 2022, Vance said, "I gotta be honest with you, I don't really care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other."

These people need to be prosecuted for treason.

Eyewitness Account

‘I Was Four Feet Away When I Heard the Bullets’

I’m still in shock. I can’t make sense of any of it right now. As a journalist, you’re always looking 360 degrees around you at all times—but for details, not for danger.

The whole thing was deeply disorienting. We’ve all seen enactments of this sort of violence—in movies or documentaries—but when you experience it, it doesn’t happen that way. There’s no soundtrack, no visual signposts. It’s just unreal.

What’s clear to me after today is that if someone is determined to commit an act of political violence, they will find a way.
Earlier that afternoon, before the shooting that left two people dead including the gunman, I asked an 11-year-old: “Is this your first Trump rally?”

“Yeah,” he smiled, “but it’s not going to be my last.”

From the great Salena Zito.

I discussed this once here before and I’m not gonna do the entire analysis but if you look at the American Civil War, The most devastating war this country has ever encountered, Way more deadly than World War II To Americans. The two sides who fought so viciously in the Civil War had way way more in common with each other than leftists and conservatives in 2024 America do.

58 So here's the question. How do we balance our constitutional rights, freedom of religion, association and speech, with actual terrorist groups, or groups openly advocating for terrorism? How do you define the line?

Easy. Re-institute the status of "outlaw." Any citizen can bring a case against a terrorist group for injury or death of a family member - although you'd have to have a multi-nation declaration of the group, to keep Ds from designating their political opponents as terrorists. The declaration would have to show the actions of the group committing the terror acts. Once affirmed, any identified member of the group would be treated as outside the boundaries of civilized life, and could be dispatched without trial if caught in the act of terrorism, or sentenced before a court. The penalty of outlawry should be capital, after an appeal of fact, and a procedural appeal. Then, sentence carried out.

72 I'm not buying the one million dollar starter home stuff.
I guess it would depend on their definition of "starter home". My niece and her husband are engineers, so good income. They have owned homes in a suburb of Portland and a nice Minneapolis suburb. Their homes were not around a million dollars.

For citizens, it has to be case by case, considering whether an individual person has committed or incited violence. No way can we give the government even more power to go after groups or organizations (e.g., Catholics, NRA, parents).

Or just send them the super-shredded dollar bills that have been defaced and taken out of circulation. If they can piece the few hundred pieces of the dollar bill back together, and make it presentable, they can spend it.

Of course, the pieces must be delivered in the same fashion as planes drop water on a forest fire.

Those are the people who have no future because they can't afford one. Their time preference is for today since there is no way to pay for tomorrow
Vance is talking about the people who are virtue signalling, that is acting for adulation today, not for the future. The ones who are looking for payoffs today in place of investments in the future, and the ones with no kids, so they can afford what they want today instead of pay for the kids to raise them for the future.

Your nickname says it all. My property taxes have increased several hundred dollars per year, and they were already high. Also, I went to the grocery store today. The inflation is terrible.

Setting aside the American obsessive devotion to "class" for a moment, I think the elephant in the room are property taxes. How many taxing entities here in TX will stick to the "effective" rate (or as it is now called the No New Revenue Rate) over the next year? Not many, I'd bet. Imagine how much easier it would be to afford a home if government was forced to live within its means?

Oh, and Elon's son-daughter says something I sympathize with:

This entire thing [the kid exhibiting "gay" behavior at the age of 4] is completely made up and there’s a reason for this. He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there, and in the little time that he was I was relentlessly harassed for my femininity and queerness. Obviously he can’t say that, so I’ve been reduced to a happy little stereotype f*g-ing along to use at his discretion.

I slept through mine, also. Thankfully, because they were so impacted they had no chance of coming in without causing a lot of havoc with the rest of my teeth.

So in addition to the jackhammer treatment so they could extract them in slivers, they got to slice holes in my gums to get at them in the first place.

And yes, all of them at once.

Simple answer: Western democracies and republics need to simply say that freedom of religion specifically excludes islam, because it is not a religion like any other, and its "holy" books specifically instruct believers to kill non-believers, or convert them at the point of a sword. muslims themselves will tell you that islam is not a religion like any other. Take their word for it. I would say, as a practical matter, you could allow a limited number of muslims to live in your country as "resident aliens", but they would never be allowed to vote, or hold public office.

If they could not vote, politicians of all stripes would see no need to pander to them, too.

Absentee father blames society for his son's sad fate. "I was fooled by these evil geniuses," he says. Easy to be fooled when you knew nothing about actual parenting. My father would barely let the dentist take out my wisdom teeth when I was a teen.

Kids, even those with attentive parents, are easy to fuck up- and that was before we had a large contingent of society waiting and encouraging them to be fucked up so they can abuse them (and this is abuse, even if it does not involve sex.)

The people who have a duty and obligation to care for kids and try to get them through the already crazy years are abrogating and intentionally harming these kids.

372 >> butterface

Butterball effect is a thing in zero-g. On earth, fluid distributes more down in your legs. In free-float, that fluid comes back up in the middle torso. Your legs get skinnier and you're sort of a butterball.

That causes you to have to pee like crazy at first, until your body adapts to lower fluid volume. The butterball effect diminishes, as the body finds an equilibrium with less total fluid volume.

Her legs are skinnier than normal.

Come back to earth, and it's hell for a while, until you readjust.

I don’t know all his Familial interactions over the years nor do I care. I see a person who correctly sees that America is on the precipice of turning into something really bad and he wants to stop it.

From what I’ve seen with musk over the last couple years, I support him fully. For some reason, this reminds me of A video game or some other contest where one guy has to keep beating every opponent. The opponent can tap out like in a relay match, but the hero cannot. 419 416, I don’t want to be morbid because I hope it is better than this. But at some point, it might be that we support Trump just defend our own kind. And buy our own kind I mean people that love America and think Trump is the best person to be president.

When politicians say today that they are for all Americans and they want to bring us all together that’s simply just not true. With Trump, I do believe it’s true I believe he believes that, but the problem is at least a third of the country has no interest in being unified with any conservative.

I lived in the swamp when Trump was elected in 2016 and they went off like spoiled brats and basically went insane. I don’t think if Trump wins the country will come together. I think the left will get even worse. But we have no choice. There’s a point where we have to protect our own. You can try to bring people to your own side and try to explain to them what America is about, But too many are simply lost. I want Trump to win more than anything, but I don’t think that will fix everything far from it.

Throughout our history we have met and prevailed over issues even more serious than the current mess. It is our heritage to continue the struggle of our predecessors to ensure this Republic endures. We have, to date, an unbroken record of success and I see no reason for this to differ here, IF we remain steadfast. We will be triumphant. So never despair or allow the doom and gloomers to prevail.

Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at July 26, 2024 03:41 AM (hKoQL)

426 I hate it when people make political issues about themselves. But I said over and over and over in 2016 on this exact site that Trump needed to spread the federal government far and wide. I knew there was an entrance deep state with almost all of them living in Northern Virginia. First of all, they would not obey his orders and secondly, They control a state only because of government largesse. They also control Maryland and DC, but those places are lost.

I said Trump should get rid of the massive federal government in northern Virginia, because the federal government itself runs Virginia. It is not fair to the rest of the country that northern Virginia always wins when it comes to federal handout, and it is not fair. That one party gets to control and entire state simply because they pour a ton of money into it and all their friends from the north move there. It is simply not fair.

I know it was not easy for Trump and he was let down by a lot of people, but the one thing I wished he had accomplished in his first term was sending The federal government far afield. It is the federal government they should represent everyone, Not just Northern Virginia.

Posted by: Quint at July 26, 2024 03:44 AM (lrgVH)

427 Anyone who thinks the representatives and federal government employees live in Washington DC needs to have a wake up call. They all live in Northern Virginia, and that has been the case for 50 years. No one was means would live in Washington DC or even Maryland. They were really caught up in their weirdness unless they actually liked living in a worse place.

I used to live by and run into Congressman all the time in northern Virginia, Would talk about how much they loved their home state, But overtime, they rarely went back unless it was to get reelected.

I do think Trump should do the border first if he gets elected, Secondly, he should spread the The federal government far and wide.

Well, it's more of what I haven't done, like signing papers to trans a kid, like Elon acknowledges he did but blames trickery rather than himself.

I'm perfectly happy to see any positives that come from Elon's rightward turn. But he spent plenty of years on the liberal reservation beforehand. So he's only making amends for a situation he helped create. He's basically a super-rich version of Tulsi Gabbard. Happy to hear him finally say some sensible things, but I don't owe him anything, let alone the endless apologetic hagiography the right favors these days.

He's a distinctly weird person, as anyone who had a long relationship producing offspring with a person like Grimes would have to be. I can like the effects of his rightward turn without thinking much of him personally, and that's how it is for me.

439 Sheetz is huge here. The 7/11,s legitimately suck. Back in the day in Northern Virginia the seventh elevenths were really good. The way to 7-Eleven is to go to their fountain drinks. Half the time the drinks they have on display don’t come out when you try to buy them. Someone’s ass should be fired because that is a complete joke. Many times I fill the cup with ice got some random beverage, probably through pipes that were full of E. coli and had to dump it in the trash. That is not the 7-Eleven I once knew.

It is interesting to me that Wawa used to be mostly south of Fredericksburg and Sheetz was more of a Pennsylvania thing. Now sheets is the big dog in the mid Atlantic though I don’t love it as much as everyone else but everyone else really does love it.

The latest excitement is is building literally right next to a Sheetz in our town. That will be interesting. I wonder why they made that decision, It could be a huge miss or possibly a huge win if Wawa does something new.

440 Wawa is opening right next to Sheetz.

441 I was a proud member of the Rush Is Right cult.
So there's that.

442 I miss the old High’s dairy stores back in the day. In our area, 7/11 bought them out.

445 Are WaWa and Sheetz hearing footsteps yet?

446 441, there will never be another rush. Some people hate hearing that because of course our movement has to go forward, But there will never be another Rush. If you missed out on it, that is OK, Time moves on and rush would agree. But just like There was only one Ronald Wilson, Reagan there was only One Rush Limbaugh. You could add up every conservative talker today and many of them, my love, but you could add them all up and they would not have the impact of Rush.

448 "What’s clear to me after today is that if someone is determined to commit an act of political violence, they will find a way."

Of course, committing an act of political violence against Trump (or anybody on the right, for that matter) really doesn't take a lot of committment. J13 showed us the SS will throw the doors wide open for you, if not outright provide you the weapons.
