Supermarkets, airports, petrol stations, universities, law firms, Bunnings, blood donation services, banks, government departments, Microsoft, police computer systems, NSW emergency services, 7-11 and the ABC's own video editing department are offline across Australia because security company Crowdstrike went splat.

Reportedly any computer with Crowdstrike installed is now throwing the Blue Screen of Death after a bad update and the only solution is to boot into safe mode and remove the driver.

Banks, airlines, and emergency services in the US are also affected. (Twitter)

And Europe.

Fortunately hamsters are naturally immune.

AMD's latest 12-core laptop chip comes in just slightly behind Apple's 16-core M3 Max on multi-threaded workloads. (Tom's Hardware)

I got enough sleep last night, or mostly, and now I have to decide whether to go work out in improved conditions compared to earlier this week. Still nasty, you understand, just less nasty. It rained yesterday p.m. (I had to wade in ankle-deep water to my car, which was okay) and stayed cloudy until dark, so we got no evening superheating.

There is a faulty channel file, so not quite an update. There is a workaround... 1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode or WRE. 2. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike 3. Locate and delete file matching "C-00000291*.sys" 4. Boot normally.

55 As much as I complain about summer here, I guess we'll end up staying. Too old (and broke!) to move, for one thing.

Also-- although it sometimes snows enough to be a hassle, it doesn't *usually* stick for very long. No tornadoes. No hurricanes. Our biggest risk here is grass/brush fires, and the smoke, due to combo of tinder-dry conditions and lightning (or human carelessness) although we personally have never had to evacuate.

Well... my company fired a bunch of people responsible for things and moved some of their responsibility to groups in India who don't know anything about it and are, frankly, unlikely to be able to handle it if they are aware... not anything to do with the current issue but... I've got eight teams who want me to do shit for them across several code branches and multiple years dealing with countless issues of changed underlying infrastructure and everyone needs it NOW!!!!!! I have to do massive context switches several times a day a try to figure out workarounds for shit that was never my responsibility and no one understands anymore.

This is actually giving me a bit of a break since I can't do much at the moment.

Last night Miss Linda had me watching Rogue One, the Star Wars film (a prequel to the events in the original 1977 film, right?). Aside from everything being dim, orangish, or grayish, and the lack of originality (just how many of the SW plots have revolved around the Death Star?), it seems pretty decent.

116 Wolfus, Rogue One was probably the last decent Star Wars movie made.

The prequel to Rogue One is the TV series “Andor” which is filmed in much the same way and has the same kind of atmosphere. It’s probably the best TV series that Disney has made other than “The Mandalorian” Seasons 1 & 2. All on DisneyPlus.

I didn't give my opinion yesterday because things can get uhhh ratherc contentious here and sometimes it's exhausting. I respect people of good will and good people of a variety of religious faiths. I don't have to have the same religious views they do to listen to them. Besides there is so much Christianity expressed at the RNC that I don't mind a Hindu prayer. What I WOULD mind is if someone who was a Satanist wanted to give a prayer because I am opposed to Satan, but I find it difficult to imagine a person at the RNC worshipping Satan

132 I had that fitbit charge. Immediately after a firmware update this year it started discharging from 100% to 0 in about half an hour. And some of it's sensors were failed. Useless. And their solution was for me to buy a new one with a 20% off, "sorry our company sucks now" coupon. Nah bro, I'll pass.

_Rogue One_ is a Bush-era no-war-for-oil screed. I was playing Code Pink Bingo while watching and filled my card half an hour in. Add in the completely dissonant pandering to the Chinese audience and I cannot fathom why this film is so admired.
