Tech News

  • The FBI has gained access to the would-be assassin's cell phone. (The Verge)

Unlikely that this will change anything, of course.

    Best comment: Reddit is leaking.

  • Microsoft's CTO denies the obvious, that AI is facing exponential scaling costs. (Ars Technica)

He denies this in the face of exponential expenses in AI training. He's lying, badly.

Best comment: Always listen to the Chief Tulip Officer's advice about investing in tulips.

  • A look at AMD's Zen 5 microarchitecture. (AnandTech)

Zen 1 through Zen 4 had the same basic design, able to issue and retire four instructions per cycle. Zen 4 also introduced a 256-bit half-width version of Intel's AVX-512 vector processing. Intel's own consumer CPUs lack AVX-512 in any form.

With Zen 5 the issue width has been increased to eight instructions per cycle, and the AVX-512 unit is now a full 512 bits wide.

If your code is poised perfectly to take advantage of the improved hardware it could run twice as fast on Zen 5 as Zen 4, but that's unlikely.

The performance charts attached to this article show the 12 core 9900X running Handbrake video processing tasks 41% faster than Intel's 24 core 14900K, at half the power consumption.

Of course Intel will have new chips itself later this year, but those are expected to focus on fixing the power issues more than increasing performance.

These AMD chips are due to show up... Basically now.

  • Also on the AMD front, testing the graphics performance of the new Ryzen HX 370 laptop chip. (Tom's Hardware)

It's basically level with the desktop GTX 1070, laptop GTX 1650 Ti, or the Radeon RX 480. I used an RX 480 myself from 2017 to 2022, and it's a perfectly competent card. For integrated graphics performance it's amazing.

AMD has another, much more powerful laptop CPU in the wings, with at least twice the graphics performance. No word yet on when that one will ship.

Fifty and more years later, we appreciate the music that, at the time, we thought was dull or "old" or (that classic term of the time) not "relevant."

They called James Brown "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business," but Tom Jones gave him a run for his money.

Looks as if Amazon is getting some bucks from me today. It's Prime Day. The battery powered self propelled lawn mower I want is $150.00 off. Let me do the math - .10 cents worth of electricity per cutting versus almost $3.75 worth of gasoline.

I may have to think about this some more.

Ah, for the days when artists tried to look their *best* on stage, instead of as if they just finished changing the oil in their cars. One of the reasons I liked country music in the '80s and '90s. Faith Hill and Martina McBride always dressed well and looked great instead of spraying their hair weird colors and wearing scruffy T-shirts.

27 I think one of the reasons the Carpenters were such a big hit in 1970 and later was that they did not look dirty and unkempt. Yes, part of it was great melodies and lyrics -- a romantic sound rather than screeching guitars -- and Karen's incredible voice, but they were attractive and looked their best on stage.

Hard to beat "We've Only Just Begun" and "Yesterday Once More," and Karen's soaring vocals on "Superstar."

Elvis had that "dangerous," "bad-boy" edge to his looks. Those were given the lie by his Southern-boy politeness ("Yes, ma'am"), but his musical performances, and the best of his movie portrayals, gave your this feeling that you didn't want to mess with this guy. Which appealed to women, and made men want to be like him.

It's hard to dislike the movie King Creole. It had a solid storyline, the songs were kept to his performances in clubs in the story instead of singing on a beach or in the street, and you got the fringe benefits of a young Carolyn Jones and (in his villain phase) Walter Matthau.

He wanted very much to be a dramatic actor. You get glimpses of real talent in some of his early movies, and if Col. Parker hadn't stuck him in those silly movie musicals, I wonder if he might have developed into something pretty strong.

Funny that his Chuck Berry-penned "Promised Land," one of his very best singles, gets played on country oldies stations, but I never hear it on Top 40 oldies stations. Even when he was older and heavier, and doing the drugs, he could still live-perform a fast number like "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" (later redone well by Travis Tritt; but Elvis was first).

49 Comment from a Tom Jones YT video:
"A guy came into our local bar with a dead cat in a cage. He said it had died at the veterinarian's and he was bringing it into the bar to buy everyone a drink to toast his departed pet. He said it was a wake and he bought drinks for about an hour. Suddenly, his wife walked in and asked where the cat was. A bar buck had put the dead cat and it's cage outside since the owner thought it might start to stink. The man said it was outside in a cage. The wife went out, found that the cat was dead and walked back in and knocked the man off his bar stool. She left in his Cadillac. He picked himself up, dusted himself off and said: "She never has understood a wake". I got up and played "What's New Pussycat?" on the juke box."

A feature of the Great Working Apathetic Blob is a horror of violence. Which is counterintuitive as trust me, their lives are often suffused with chaos and violence, mostly self-generated. But anybody dies or gets hurt, they're genuinely appalled and get all perturbed, usually expressing sentiments that 'something should have been done' or often something about 'fairness' or some asinine shit. So Trump getting shot and the murder of a father of two, is going to hit that demographic where they can actually feel something. They have to 'feel' as believe me, they don't do a lot of 'thinking'.

62 I think (optimistically and without evidence) that a lot of the support amongst the masses for all the evil policies of the Uniparty comes from perverted and misdirected good intentions. I'd go so far as to say that this particular dynamic is the sole pillar of actual tangible power that has brought this damnable, amorphous miasma of a junta into being.

If this charm offensive can somehow serve to crumble that pillar, by rattling enough people to reconsider that just because a policy sounds nice on its surface ("who does it hurt? Why do you want to control people?" Etc.) doesn't mean it isn't evil and does far reaching damage to life, liberty, and happiness....

A push for Unity is actually a push for Division. Divide the evil junta from their mush-headed reflex-action lo-fo supporters.

Years ago, here at the ol' HQ, we didn't have hashes. So we could be anybody and sock each other. One day we were all "Ace." This was before the internet was really evil, so it was still harmless fun.

Once in a while, we'd have an occasional Democrat lefty troll socking a regular and say nasty things. Long story short, Pixy changed it so we'd have hashes.

Someone dug up some social media with a person who I suspect the F B I will want to talk to.

This second individual made some comment two hours after the assassination attempt about not sending an Antifa pussy to do a job for the C I A. Words to that effect.

48 hour rule still applies. May be something, may be BS.

We also used to have way more options for fonts, texts, colors, italics, underlines, bold, special characters.

But that was abused and would wreak havoc on the blog, causing glitches and fritzes. So Pixy took that away, too.

90 I was out for coffee with The Kid a while back and she point blank told me she has multiple identities in various locations all over the Web in various 'rooms, and cheerfully told me she has some she uses on 4chan and others on Kiwi Farms solely to, as she put it, 'stir shit up and see what happens!'

She pleasantly informed me that one of them, hidden behind a VPN, is solely for cyber-bullying semi-celebrities she doesn't like. I admit to being appalled, and told her so, but since I kind of think anybody taking a virtual world that seriously kind of deserves what they get... as long as she doesn't incite somebody to an assassination or some shit. It's a whole different world from anything I recognize as 'reality' so what do I know.

I got caught up in the great blanket ban that occurred when Charles went hard-left and didn't want any conservatives on his site anymore. This was years ago, I can't even remember what year it happened now.

When I'm reminded about this, I try my old credentials just to put an entry in the log that a suspended account tried to log in. I imagine Charles' eyelid twitching in response, and that makes me smile.

'professionals'... that it might be helpful for me to write about things and my experiences, so I had a blog (this was quite a while ago, decades), where I posted all kinds of insane stuff, all of it factual, because I didn't think anybody read blogs. I thought it was just me yelling at the sky. Then my ex put a stat counter on it.

I deleted that fucker within weeks. I was getting hits from all over the world, got up to thousands of views and I totally panicked and scrubbed the entire thing. I wish I would have downloaded it now, I'll never match the intensity.

Trump and Trumpism threaten not only democracy but the kind of religious liberty made possible only in a democracy. Trump’s evangelical supporters define religious liberty as something they alone are worthy of benefitting from — liberty for me but not for thee.
