30 This painter was a contemporary of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, but was a Netherlander (which region was controlled at that time by England's deadly enemy Spain, right?).

Sir Henry here looks rather as if his carriage is not ready, or his valet forgot to polish his boots. On top of that his hairline is receding. Not a happy camper.

If I remember my English history correctly, the Queen's (or King's) Champion was supposed to ride a horse into the sovereign's banqueting hall on the day of accession, throw down a glove and challenge anyone who disputed the sovereign's right to rule to single combat.

I believe the Champion role was hereditary, also, and handed down from father to son. I could find the family if I had the time, but I don't.

136 I can see why the artist was so in demand. This is near photorealistic for the period. The way he conveys the details of the accoutrements, hair texture and clothing is remarkable. Keeping the background simple makes the figure almost pop out of the canvas. No doubt he eliminated some aspects (early Photoshop?) but the result is still flattering, lifelike and convincing. From a non-art point of view, the depicting of the fashion of the 1500s is fascinating.

It would be interesting to see his work up close to see how he achieved his effects.

143 Marcus Gheeraerts II 1561/2‒1636
Portrait of Captain Thomas Lee
1594

Thomas was related to Sir Henry Lee, Elizabeth I's Champion and creator of imagery for her annual Accession Day celebrations. Henry may have helped devise the complex symbolism of this portrait. Thomas served in the English colonial forces in Ireland. His bare legs are a fantasy evocation both of the dress of an Irish soldier, and that of a Roman hero. Thomas was suspected of treachery to Elizabeth and visited London in 1594 partly to refute this. The Latin inscription in the tree refers to the Roman Mucius Scaevola, who stayed true to Rome even when among its enemies. Lee implies that he too is faithful.

184 LibsofTikTok has spent the last three days screenshotting assassination wishes from randos on the left. Many of them have been getting fired. Kyle Gass seems to have completely destroyed his career with one public joke, and Jack Black has had to grovel afterwards.

I think the assassination attempt on Trump and the left's reaction to it is a paradigm shift in American, maybe even global, politics (the Gass thing happened in Australia).

I think normies have been hearing the unhinged stuff from the left and either thinking it was just normal rhetoric or were too afraid to say anything in response. The attempt on Trump's life followed by lefties everywhere saying that they wished the shooter had better aim has horrified normies. Horrified them.

That's not normal political discourse. That's unhinged insanity. They're now willing to let the left know that it's not acceptable. Firing the nice lady at Home Depot who wished on FB that Trump was dead, the school counselor, the nurse, the Dallas police officer, the guitar player with a famous friend. It's an acceptable thing to do in response to their unhinged insanity for normies now.

The left is finally, fully exposed as lunatic.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, laughing at the clowns with Preston Sturges at July 17, 2024 10:11 AM (GBKbO)

185 And, the Democrat Party has no where else to go. They pulled all of their ads immediately after the attempt, and then they put them back up about 48 hours later.

How are normies going to react to that? How are normies, who are reacting very, very badly to assassination porn from their neighbors, from their entertainers, going to react to one of two major political parties just upping the pressure more?

Why would Democrats do that? Because their money men demand it. Immediately after, within hours, a major bundler was telling press to treat the assassination attempt as staged while people like Bill Ackman have already stopped donating to the party, endorsing Trump.

So, Democrats will up the temp even more, even though normies are rejecting it. Moderate donors are leaving the party, so there are fewer voices at the top to try and get them to stop.

And they're going to cheat so big that even DU is going to go, "No way is that right."

Dear lord, I hope normies don't just accept it. They're not accepting it from their neighbors or their entertainers. They shouldn't be accepting it from the major political party that calls itself Democrat either.

Not to give them any advice, but Kamala should really pull the plug on Biden, step up for a few months and leave the political world behind. If she cannot take Joe out in this environment, she has no political future. The Dems and Kamala and Obama for that matter should let her ascend. She will forever be known as the first woman president. She will always be an ex-President. The Dems can be seen as doing the right thing. All she has to do is not fuck things up, let Trump win, make the transition easier and the history books will remember her fondly. "MRA" == "Men's Rights Activist." Started gaining steam in the mid-aughts. The MRAs, defined narrowly, lobby for changes in law, usually family law. MRAs usually support the ending of no-fault divorce and default female custody, the repudiation of the "Duluth Model" for domestic violence response (arrest the man regardless), rolling back a lot of female-benefiting employment incentives from the government, etc.

It's often a broad brush, covering everything from legal activists (the strict definition, as far as I know) to the so-called "red pill community" who comment on the dating/sex market, to people who train dudes in the art of picking up chicks. The label "MRA" can be nearly anything, depending on who uses it in what context. It can apply to anyone who thinks that women shouldn't get special treatment or limitless sympathy.

She has no political future. She failed in 2020 and it was only Party skulduggery and a combination of her hue and her genitals that got her where she is.

Harris was Kalorama's candidate. She was anointed to be the next president. She imploded in 2020, and fairly early on. She turned out to be shrill, unlikable, stupid and hopeless. Tulsi Gabbard dismantled her so completely and quickly that it finished off any potential for Harris to recover. Gabbard was punished for her temerity (her career is over, too), but the damage was done. Harris was unsalvageable at that point.

Kalorama tried to get a second bite at the cherry by installing her at VP, but she's spent four years demonstrating that what we saw on the campaign trail was the very best that anyone could ever expect out of her. She's done. The goose is already cooked.

277 What the assasination attempt has really done is given Trump an opportunity to make a 2nd impression to a lot of people. It has already been commented that he is a bit different ... his debate performance was more muted than prior ones. Biden being an old angry dementia patient makes this all the more acute. And people do remember that the economy was much better just before Covid, which is a not remembered fondly by many.

Few politicians get a 2nd opportunity to present themselves to the public. Trump does. A lot of people who disliked him the first time are going to be more endeared to him.

Again, surviving an assassination attemp has that effect.

Once it happens they have nowhere to hide what they are, and we can see who's willing to continue to accommodate it and who's willing to put an end to the whole misbegotten usurpation. Probably not. If the Party decides to let nature take its course and just let Trump win in November, they'll have a couple of years to hammer out the factions and select a candidate. That candidate won't be Harris. I still think it will be Whitmer, with Newsom as a more-distant possibility. Somebody else might be more likely than either.

But it won't be Harris. She'll probably run and the Party will even probably help her (or pretend to), but she's not going to win anything.

400 Seriously...bacon is great. And Costco thick-cut bacon is excellent, and also a great value. I have about five pounds of it in the freezer.

Best I've ever found is the thick cut hickory smoked bacon in the Kroger butcher's case. It's unpackaged so the meat cutter has to weigh it out and wrap it old-fashioned butcher style.

Please do this under the guidance of docs - you should be getting your kidneys and BP checked prior to starting and as you go, b/c while this diet is great for some, if you are susceptible to issues with BP or kidneys, this diet can be very, very bad...and you won't know if you don't check these two things early and often...

Diet really is individual...
